asya sūtasya cāsmābhirdattaṃ brahmāsanaṃ mahat .. 29 ..
To this Sūta the great seat of Brahmā was given by us, (29)
3.1.19.62
akṣayaṃ cāyurasmābhirasya dattaṃ halāyudha ..
and imperishable life was granted to him by us, O plow-armed one!
3.1.19.63
bhavatā''jānataivādya kṛto brahmavadho mahān .. 3.1.19.30 ..
By you, without knowing, a great slaying of a brahmin has been committed today. (30)

you yourself, for the guidance of the world,
3.1.19.67
kuruṣva bhagavanrāma nānyena preritaḥ kuru ..
perform the penance, O Lord Rāma; do so unprompted by another!”

Addressed thus, the Lord Rāma said to those sages: (32)
3.1.19.69
.. rāma uvāca .. ..
Rāma said:
3.1.19.70
prāyaścittaṃ cariṣyābhi pāpaśodhakamāstikāḥ .. 33 ..
“I will perform the penance that cleanses sin, O faithful ones, (33)
3.1.19.71
lokasaṃgrahaṇārthāya nānyakāmanayā'dhunā ..
now for the guidance of the world, with no other desire.
3.1.19.72
yādṛśo niyamo'smābhiḥ kartavyaḥ pāpaśāṃtaye .. 34 ..

such an observance, indeed, let you declare to us today.”

"The imperishable lifespan that was granted by you to this Sūta,
3.1.19.75
iṃdriyāṇi ca sattvaṃ ca kariṣye yogamāyayā ..35 ..
and [his] senses and vital strength, I shall restore through [my] yogic power."

"O Lord, so that your prowess, the weapon, and death [itself] may be upheld,
3.1.19.78
syātsatyavacanaṃ rāma tadbhavānkartumarhati .. 36 .. ..
and so that our word may also prove true, O Rāma, you should act accordingly."
3.1.19.79
.. rāma uvāca .. ..
Rāma said:
3.1.19.80
ātmā vai putrarūpeṇa bhavatīti śrutissadā ..37 ..
"The scripture constantly proclaims: 'One's own self indeed comes to be in the form of a son.'
3.1.19.81
udghoṣayati vipreṃdrāstasmādasya śarīrataḥ ..
Therefore, O best of brahmins, from his body
3.1.19.82
putro bhavatu dīrghāyuḥ sattveṃdriya balorjitaḥ .. 39 ..
let a son be born, long-lived, endowed with vital strength, senses, and might.

he will become omniscient by the power of my yogic potency."
3.1.19.85
ityuktvā rauhiṇeyastānpunaḥ praśritamabravīt ..
Having said this, the son of Rohiṇī again addressed them humbly:
3.1.19.86
manobhilaṣitaṃ kiṃ vā yuṣmākaṃ karavāṇyaham .. 3.1.19.40 ..
"Or what desire of your hearts shall I fulfill?
3.1.19.87
tadbrūta munayo yūyaṃ kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ ..
Speak, you sages! I will do it without a doubt.
3.1.19.88
ajñānānmatkṛtasyāsya pāpasyāpi nivartakam ..
Also, to dispel this sin committed by me through ignorance,
3.1.19.89
prāyaścittaṃ bhavanto me prabrūta munisattamāḥ .. 41 ..
tell me, O best of sages, the expiation."
3.1.19.90
.. munaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The sages said:
3.1.19.91
ilvalasyātmajaḥ kaściddānavo balvalābhidhaḥ .. 42 ..
"There is a certain Dānava, a son of Ilvala, named Balvala.
3.1.19.92
sa dūṣayati no yāgaṃ rāmehāgatya parvaṇi ..
He defiles our sacrifice, O Rāma, coming here on the auspicious day.
3.1.19.93
duṣṭaṃ taṃ dānavaṃ pāpaṃ jahi lokaikakaṇṭakam ..43 ..
Slay that wicked, sinful Dānava, the sole thorn of the world!
3.1.19.94
anena pūjā hyasmākaṃ kṛtā syādbhavatādhunā ..
By this, indeed, worship would be offered by you to us now.
3.1.19.95
asthiviṇmūtraraktāni surāmāṃsāni ca kratau .. 44 ..
Bones, feces, urine, blood, liquor, and flesh in the sacrifice—
3.1.19.96
sadābhivarṣate'smākamatrāgatya sa dānavaḥ ..
coming here, that Dānava constantly rains these down upon us.
3.1.19.97
asminbhāratabhūbhāge yāni tīrthāni saṃti hi .. 45 ..
Moreover, whatever sacred fords there are in this land of Bhārata,
3.1.19.98
teṣu snāhyabdamekaṃ tvaṃ sarveṣu susamāhitaḥ ..
bathe in all of them for one year, deeply concentrated.
3.1.19.99
tena te pāpaśāṃtiḥ syānnātra kāryā vicāraṇā .. 46 ..
Thereby the pacification of your sin will take place; no doubt should be entertained here."
3.1.19.100
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
3.1.19.101
parvakāle tu vipreṃdrāḥ samāvṛtte munikratau ..
Then, O best of brahmins, when the auspicious time arrived at the sages' sacrifice,
3.1.19.102
mahābhīmo rajovarṣo jhaṃjhāvātaśca bhīṣaṇaḥ .. 47 ..
a great, terrible shower of dust and a fierce hurricane,
3.1.19.103
prādurbabhūva vipreṃdrāḥ pūyaraktaiśca varṣaṇam ..
O best of brahmins, and a rain of pus and blood manifested;
3.1.19.104
tato viṣṭhāmayā vṛṣṭirbalvalena kṛtāpyabhūt .. 49 ..
then a rain consisting of excrement was also caused by Balvala.
3.1.19.105
asuraṃ yajñaśālāyāṃ śūlapāṇimatha kṣaṇāt ..
Then in an instant, in the sacrificial hall, with trident in hand,
3.1.19.106
apaśyadbalabhadro'sau mahābalaparākramam .. 49 ..
that Balabhadra saw the Asura of great strength and valor.
3.1.19.107
tamālokya mahādehaṃ dagdhādripratimaṃ tadā ..
Seeing him of gigantic body, resembling a burnt mountain,
3.1.19.108
prataptatāmrasaṃkāśaśmaśrudaṃṣṭrotkaṭānanam .. 3.1.19.50 ..
with a fierce face of beards and fangs glowing like molten copper,
3.1.19.109
ciṃtayāmāsa musalaṃ rāmaḥ paravidāraṇam..
Rāma thought of the pestle that tears enemies apart,
3.1.19.110
sīraṃ ca dānavaharaṃ gadāṃ daityavidāriṇīm .. 51 ..
the plow that destroys Dānavas, and the mace that shatters Daityas.
3.1.19.111
yānyāyudhāni taṃ rāmaṃ ciṃtitānyupatasthire ..
Whatever weapons were thought of attended upon that Rāma.
3.1.19.112
sīrāgreṇa tamākṛṣya balvalaṃ khecaraṃ tadā .. 52 ..
Then, having dragged that sky-roaming Balvala with the tip of his plow,
3.1.19.113
musalena nijaghne sa kupito mūrdhni vegataḥ ..
he, enraged, struck him swiftly on the head with his pestle.
3.1.19.114
papāta bhuvi saṃkṣuṇṇalalāṭo raktamudvaman .. 53 ..
He fell to the ground, his forehead crushed, vomiting blood,
3.1.19.115
balvalo dīnakathano girirvajrahato yathā ..
Balvala, uttering pitiable cries, like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
3.1.19.116
stutvātha munayo rāmaṃ proccārya vimalāśiṣaḥ .. 94 ..
Then, having praised Rāma and pronounced spotless blessings,
3.1.19.117
abhyaṣiṃcañcchubhaistoyairvṛtraśatruṃ yathā surāḥ ..
the sages sprinkled him with auspicious waters, as the gods did to the foe of Vṛtra.
3.1.19.118
mālāṃ dadurvaijayantīṃ śrīmadaṃbuja śobhitām .. 55 ..
They gave him the Vaijayantī garland adorned with glorious lotuses,
3.1.19.119
mādhavāya śubhe vastre bhūṣaṇāni śubhāni ca ..
two auspicious garments, and splendid ornaments for Mādhava.
3.1.19.120
dhārayaṃstāni sarvāṇi rauhiṇeyo mahābalaḥ ..56..
Wearing all of those, the mighty son of Rohiṇī
3.1.19.121
puṣpitānokahopetaḥ kailāsa iva parvataḥ ..
[looked] like Mount Kailāsa endowed with flowering trees.
3.1.19.122
anujñāto'tha munibhiḥ sarvatīrtheṣu sa dvijāḥ .. 57 ..
Then, permitted by the sages to [visit] all the sacred fords, O twice-born,
3.1.19.123
ekamabdaṃ caransasnau niyamācārasaṃyutaḥ ..
he roamed and bathed for one year, endowed with vows and proper conduct.
3.1.19.124
tataḥ saṃvatsare pūrṇe kāliṃdībhedano balaḥ .. 58 ..
Then, when a full year had elapsed, Bala, the cleaver of the Kālindī,
3.1.19.125
samāptatīrthayātraḥ sanpurīṃ gantuṃ pracakrame ..
having completed his pilgrimage to the sacred fords, set out to go to the city.
3.1.19.126
tatastamomayīṃ chāyāṃ pṛṣṭhatonugatāṃ kṛśām .. 59 ..
Then, a dark shadow following behind, emaciated,
3.1.19.127
apaśyadbaladevoyaṃ mahānādavirāviṇīm ..
emitting a great roar, this Baladeva beheld.
3.1.19.128
atha vārtā sa śuśrāva samudbhūtāṃ tadāṃbare .. 3.1.19.60 ..
Then he heard a voice that arose in the sky at that time:
3.1.19.129
rāmarāma mahābāho rauhiṇeya sitaprabha ..
"Rāma, Rāma, O mighty-armed one, son of Rohiṇī, of white luster!
3.1.19.130
tīrthābhigamanenādya caritena tvayā'nagha .. .. 61 ..
Though a journey to sacred fords was undertaken by you today, O sinless one,
3.1.19.131
na naṣṭā brahmahatyā te niḥśeṣaṃ rohiṇīsuta ..
your [sin of] killing a brahmin is not entirely destroyed, O son of Rohiṇī."
3.1.19.132
iti vārtāṃ samākarṇya ciṃtayāmāsa vai balaḥ .. 62 ..
Having heard this voice, Bala indeed reflected:
3.1.19.133
prāyaścittaṃ mayā cīrṇamekābdaṃ tīrtha sevayā ..
"An expiation was performed by me for one full year by visiting sacred fords.
3.1.19.134
tathāpi brahmahatyā sā na naṣṭeti śrutaṃ vacaḥ .. 63 ..
"Even so, that sin of killing a brahmin was not destroyed": hearing these words,
3.1.19.135
kiṃ kurma iti saṃciṃtya naimiṣāraṇyamabhyagāt ..
he reflected, "What shall I do?", and went to Naimiṣāraṇya.
3.1.19.136
tatra gatvā munīnāṃ tannyavedayadariṃdamaḥ .. 64 ..
Having gone there, the subduer of foes reported that to the sages.
3.1.19.137
yacchrutaṃ gagane vākyaṃ yā ca dṛṣṭā tamomayī ..
What was heard as a voice in the sky, and that [figure] consisting of darkness which was seen—
3.1.19.138
nyavedayata tatsarvaṃ munīnāṃ rohiṇīsutaḥ ..
the son of Rohiṇī reported all of that to the sages.
3.1.19.139
tacchrutvā munayaḥ sarve rāmaṃ vākyamathābruvan .. 65 ..
Hearing that, all the sages then said this word to Rāma:
3.1.19.140
.. munaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The sages said:
3.1.19.141
yadi rāma na naṣṭā te brahmahatyā tu kṛtsnaśaḥ .. 66 ..
"If, O Rāma, your sin of killing a brahmin has indeed not been entirely destroyed,
3.1.19.142
tarhi gaccha mahābhāga gaṃdhamādanaparvatam ..
then go, O highly fortunate one, to Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.19.143
mahāduḥkha praśamanaṃ mahārogavināśanam .. 67 ..
which relieves great sorrow and destroys great diseases.
3.1.19.144
rāmasetau mahāpuṇye gandhamādanaparvate ..
At Rāmasetu, on the greatly holy Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.19.145
asti lakṣmaṇatīrthākhyaṃ saraḥ pāpavināśanam .. 68 ..
there is a lake called Lakṣmaṇatīrtha, which destroys sin.
3.1.19.146
snānaṃ kuruṣva tatra tvaṃ talliṃgaṃ ca namaskuru ..
Take a ritual ablution there and bow to that liṅga;
3.1.19.147
niḥśeṣaṃ tena naṣṭā syādbrahmahatyā na saṃśayaḥ .. 69 ..
by that, the sin of killing a brahmin will be completely destroyed, no doubt."
3.1.19.148
