Śrī Sūta said:
Having bathed in Śivatīrtha, which frees from the killing of a brahmin,
a man should then go to Śaṅkhatīrtha to quell the web of his sins,
where by mere plunging even an ungrateful person is freed.
Deluded people who do not revere mothers, fathers, and teachers,
and whatever other wicked, ungrateful, shameless people there may be,
they all become purified in this Śaṅkhatīrtha merely by bathing.
Formerly, a sage named Śaṅkha lived on Mount Gandhamādana,
performing austerity, meditating on Viṣṇu with a concentrated mind.
There he fashioned an excellent sacred ford for the purpose of bathing;
the sacred ford created by Śaṅkha is called Śaṅkhatīrtha.
Having bathed there even once, a mortal—even an ungrateful one—is liberated.
Here I shall relate an ancient tale that destroys sin,
merely by hearing which a man attains liberation.
Formerly there was a foremost brahmin, the great sage Vatsanābha,
truthful, virtuous, eloquent, devoted to compassion for all beings,
equal toward enemy and friend, restrained, ascetic, with conquered senses,
versed in the Supreme Brahman, taking refuge solely in Brahman the Reality.
Endowed with such power, that sage performed austerity in his own hermitage.
Standing motionless in all his limbs on the ground right there,
he did not move from his place even by the distance of an atom.
As he remained in one place performing austerity for many hundreds of years,
an anthill crept over him and covered his limbs.
Even though his body was covered by an anthill, that great sage Vatsanābha
performed austerity alone, and did not notice the anthill at all.
While he was performing austerity, O foremost sages, Vāsava,
3.1.25.1_1
visṛjya meghajālāni varṣayāmāsa vegavān .. 13 ..
having released masses of clouds, swiftly caused it to rain.
3.1.25.1_2
evaṃ dināni saptāyaṃ sa vavarṣa niraṃ taram ..
In this way he rained unceasingly for seven days.
3.1.25.1_3
āsāreṇātimahatā vṛṣyamāṇopi vai muniḥ .. 14 ..
Even while being rained upon with an immense torrential downpour, the sage
3.1.25.1_4
taṃ varṣaṃ pratijagrāha nimīlitavilocanaḥ ..
received that rain with his eyes closed.
3.1.25.1_5
mahatā stanitenāśu tadā badhirayañchrutī .. .. 15 ..
With a great roar instantly deafening the ears then,
3.1.25.1_6
valmīkasyopariṣṭādvai nipapāta mahāśaniḥ ..
a mighty thunderbolt fell upon the anthill.
3.1.25.1_7
tasminvarṣati parjanye śītavātātiduḥsahe .. 16 ..
While the cloud was raining, unbearable with cold wind,
3.1.25.1_8
valmīkaśikharaṃ dhvastaṃ babhūvāśanitāḍi tam ..
the top of the anthill was destroyed, struck by the thunderbolt.
3.1.25.1_9
viśīrṇaśikhare tasminvalmīke'śanitāḍite .. 17 ..
When the summit of that anthill had shattered, struck by the thunderbolt,
3.1.25.1_10
sehetiduḥsahāṃ vṛṣṭiṃ vatsanābho viciṃtayan ..
Vatsanābha, meditating, endured the unbearable rain.
3.1.25.1_11
maharṣau varṣadhārābhiḥ pīḍyamāne divāni śam .. 18 ..
As the great seer was afflicted day and night by streams of rain,
3.1.25.1_12
dharmasya cetasi kṛpā saṃbabhūvātibhūyasī ..
exceedingly great compassion arose in the heart of Dharma.
3.1.25.1_13
sa dharmaściṃtayāmāsa vatsanābhe tapasyati .. 19 ..
That Dharma reflected, while Vatsanābha was performing austerity:
3.1.25.1_14
patatyapyativarṣe'yaṃ tapaso na nivartate ..
"Even though an excessive rain is falling, he does not turn back from austerity.
3.1.25.1_15
aho'sya vatsanābhasya dharmaikāyattacittatā .. 3.1.25.20 ..
Oh, how Vatsanābha's mind is devoted solely to righteousness!"
3.1.25.1_16
iti ciṃtayatastasya mātirevamajāyata ..
As he was thinking thus, such a thought arose in him:
3.1.25.1_17
ahaṃ vai māhiṣaṃ rūpaṃ sumahāṃtaṃ manoharam .. 21 ..
"Taking on the form of a buffalo, very great and charming,
3.1.25.1_18
varṣadhārānipātānāṃ soḍhāraṃ kaṭhinatvacam ..
with a tough skin capable of bearing the fall of downpours of rain,
3.1.25.1_19
svīkṛtya māhiṣaṃ rūpaṃ sthāsyāmyupari yoginaḥ .. 22 ..
having assumed the buffalo form, I will stand above the yogin.
3.1.25.1_20
na hi bādhiṣyate varṣaṃ mahāvegayutaṃ tvapi ..
The rain, even accompanied by great force, will certainly not trouble [him]."
3.1.25.1_21
dharma evaṃ viniścitya dhārāḥ pṛṣṭhena dhārayan .. 23 ..
Having decided thus, Dharma, bearing the streams [of rain] on his back,
3.1.25.1_22
vatsanābhopari tadā gātramācchādya tasthivān ..
stood above Vatsanābha, covering him with his body.
3.1.25.1_23
tataḥ saptadināṃte tu tadvai varṣamupāramat .. 24 ..
Then, at the end of seven days, that rain indeed ceased.
3.1.25.1_24
tato mahiṣarūpī sa dharmo'tikṛpayā yutaḥ ..
Then Dharma, in the form of a buffalo, filled with immense compassion,
3.1.25.1_25
tadvai valmīkamutsṛjya nātidūre hyavarttata ..25..
departed from that anthill and stayed not far away.
3.1.25.1_26
tato nivṛte varṣe tu vatsanābho mahāmuniḥ..
Then, when the rain had stopped, the great sage Vatsanābha,
3.1.25.1_27
nivṛttastapasastū rṇaṃ diśaḥ sarvā vyalokayan..26..
turning away quickly from his austerity, looked around in all directions:
3.1.25.1_28
sthito'haṃ vṛṣṭisaṃpāte kurvannadya mahattapaḥ..
"I stood amidst the downpour of rain, performing great austerity today.
3.1.25.1_29
pṛthivī salilāklinnā dṛśyate sarvatodiśam..27..
The earth is seen drenched with water in all directions;
3.1.25.1_30
śikharāṇi girīṇāṃ ca vanā nyupavanāni ca ..
the peaks of the mountains, the forests, and the groves,
3.1.25.1_31
āśramāṇi maharṣīṇāmāplutāni jalairnavaiḥ .. 28 ..
and the hermitages of the great seers are flooded with fresh water."
3.1.25.1_32
evamādīni sarvāṇi dṛṣṭvā pramudito'bhavat ..
Having seen all these things, he became delighted;
3.1.25.1_33
ciṃtayāmāsa dharmātmā vatsanā bho mahāmuniḥ .. 29 ..
the righteous-minded great sage Vatsanābha thought:
3.1.25.1_34
ahamasminmahāvarṣe nūnaṃ kenāpi rakṣitaḥ ..
"I have surely been protected by someone in this great deluge of rain.
3.1.25.1_35
varṣatyasminmahāvarṣe jīvitaṃ tvanyathā kutaḥ .. 3.1.25.30 ..
For while such a great deluge of rain fell, how else could there be life?"
3.1.25.1_36
viciṃtyaivaṃ muniśreṣṭhaḥ sarvatra samalokayat ..
Having reflected thus, the best of sages looked in all directions.
3.1.25.1_37
tato'paśyanmahākāyamadūrādagrataḥ sthitam .. 31 ..
Then, standing not far ahead, he saw a huge-bodied,
3.1.25.1_38
mahiṣaṃ nīlavarṇaṃ ca vatsanābhastapodhanaḥ ..
dark-colored buffalo; and Vatsanābha, rich in tapas,
3.1.25.1_39
mahiṣaṃ taṃ samuddiśya manasā samaciṃtayat .. 32 ..
reflected in his mind concerning that buffalo:
3.1.25.1_40
tiryagyoniṣvapi kathaṃ dṛśyate dharmaśīlatā ..
"How is a righteous disposition seen even among animals born of brute wombs?
3.1.25.1_41
yato hyahaṃ mahāvarṣānmahiṣeṇābhirakṣitaḥ .. 33 ..
For I have indeed been thoroughly protected from the great rain by a buffalo.
3.1.25.1_42
dīrghamāyuramuṣyāstu yanmāṃ rakṣitavāniha ..
May long life be his, since he protected me here!"
3.1.25.1_43
ityādi sa viciṃtyaivaṃ tapase punarudyayau .. 34 ..
Having reflected thus and so forth, he set out again for tapas.
3.1.25.1_44
taṃ punaśca tapasyaṃtaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahiṣarūpadhṛk ..
Seeing him practicing tapas once more, the one bearing the form of a buffalo,
3.1.25.1_45
romāṃcāvṛtasarvāṃgaḥ pramodamagamadbhṛśam .. .. 35 ..
with all his limbs covered in horripilation, felt exceedingly great joy.
3.1.25.1_46
vatsanābhasya hi muneḥ punaścaiva tapasyataḥ ..
Yet, as the sage Vatsanābha was practicing tapas once again,
3.1.25.1_47
manaḥ pūrvavadekāgraṃ parabrahmaṇi nābhavat .. 36 ..
his mind did not become focused on the supreme Brahman as before.
3.1.25.1_48
sa viṣaṇṇamanā bhūtvā vatsanābho vyaciṃtayat ..
Becoming dejected in mind, Vatsanābha thought:
3.1.25.1_49
na bhavedyadi nairmalyaṃ tadā syāccaṃcalaṃ manaḥ .. 37 ..
"If there is no purity, then the mind must be unsteady.
3.1.25.1_50
manaśca pāpabāhulye nirmalaṃ naiva jāyate ..
And when there is an abundance of sin, the mind does not at all become pure.
3.1.25.1_51
pāpaleśopi me nāsti kathaṃ lolā yate manaḥ .. 38 ..
Yet I have not even a trace of sin; why then does my mind waver?"
3.1.25.1_52
aciṃtayaddoṣahetuṃ vatsanābhaḥ punaḥpunaḥ ..
Vatsanābha pondered again and again the cause of the fault.
3.1.25.1_53
sa viciṃtya viniścitya niniṃdātmānamaṃjasā .. 39 ..
Having reflected and determined [it], he straightway condemned himself:
3.1.25.1_54
dhiṅmāmadya durātmānamaho mūḍhosmyahaṃ bhṛśam ..
"Fie on me, an evil-minded one today! Oh, how exceedingly foolish I am!
3.1.25.1_55
kṛtaghnatā mahādoṣo māmadya samupāgataḥ .. 3.1.25.40 ..
The great fault of ingratitude has come upon me today.
3.1.25.1_56
yadīdṛśānmahāvarṣāttrātāraṃ mahiṣottamam ..
Because, towards the excellent buffalo who saved me from such a great rain,
3.1.25.1_57
tiṣṭhāmyapūjayanneva tato me bhūtkṛtaghnatā .. 41 ..
I remain without even worshipping [him]; therefore, ingratitude has arisen in me.
3.1.25.1_58
kṛtaghnatā mahāndoṣaḥ kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ ..
Ingratitude is a great fault; there is no expiation for the ungrateful.
3.1.25.1_59
kṛtaghnasya na vai lokāḥ kṛtaghnasya na bāṃdhavāḥ .. 42 ..
For the ungrateful there are no worlds, nor does the ungrateful have kinsmen.
3.1.25.1_60
kṛtaghnatādoṣa valānmama cittaṃ malīmasam ..
By the power of the fault of ingratitude, my mind is defiled.
3.1.25.1_61
kṛtaghnā narakaṃ yāṃti ye ca viśvastaghātinaḥ .. 43 ..
The ungrateful go to hell, as do those who betray the trusting.
3.1.25.1_62
niṣkṛtiṃ naiva paśyāmi kṛtaghnānāṃ kathaṃcana ..
I see no expiation whatsoever for the ungrateful,
3.1.25.1_63
ṛte prāṇaparityāgāddharmajñānāṃ vaco yathā .. 44 ..
except the abandonment of life, as is the teaching of the knowers of righteousness.
3.1.25.1_64
pitrorabharaṇaṃ kṛtvā hyadattvā gurudakṣiṇām ..
Failing to maintain one's parents, not giving the teacher's fee,
3.1.25.1_65
kṛtaghnatāṃ ca saṃprāpya maraṇāṃtā hi niṣkṛtiḥ .. 45 ..
and contracting ingratitude—for these the expiation ends only with death.
3.1.25.1_66
tasmātprāṇānparityajya prāyaścittaṃ carāmyaham ..
Therefore, renouncing my life, I shall perform an expiation."
3.1.25.1_67
iti niścitya manasā vatsanābho mahāmuniḥ .. 46 ..
Having resolved thus in his mind, the great sage Vatsanābha,
3.1.25.1_68
tṛṇīkṛtya nijānprāṇānniḥsaṃgenāṃtarā tmanā ..
holding his own life as straw, with an inner self detached,
3.1.25.1_69
meroḥ śikharamārūḍhaḥ prāyaścittacikīrṣayā .. 47 ..
climbed the peak of Meru, wishing to perform the expiation.
3.1.25.1_70
sumeruśikharāttasmādiyeṣa patituṃ muniḥ ..
The sage wished to throw himself down from that peak of Sumeru.
3.1.25.1_71
tasminpatitumārabdhe mā tvariṣṭhā iti bruvan ..
As he began to jump, saying, "Do not act in haste!",
3.1.25.1_72
tyaktamāhiṣarūpaḥ sandharma eva nyavārayat .. 48 ..
Dharma himself, abandoning the form of a buffalo, restrained him.
3.1.25.1_73
.. dharma uvāca .. ..
Dharma said:
3.1.25.1_74
vatsanābha mahāprājña jīvasva bahuvatsarān .. 49 ..
"O Vatsanābha of great wisdom, live for many years!
3.1.25.1_75
parituṣṭo'smi bhadraṃ te dehatyāgacikīrṣayā ..
I am well pleased with your desire to renounce your body; may you prosper!
3.1.25.1_76
na hi tvaddharmakakṣāyāṃ loke kaścitsamo'sti vai .. 3.1.25.50 ..
Indeed, in the world there is no one equal to your standard of righteousness.
3.1.25.1_77
yadyapi prāṇasaṃtyāgaḥ kṛtaghne niṣkṛtirbhavet ..
Although the abandonment of life is the expiation for an ungrateful person,
3.1.25.1_78
tathāpi dharmaśīlatvāttavānyāṃ niṣkṛtiṃ vade .. 51 ..
nonetheless, because of your righteous character, I shall tell you another expiation.
3.1.25.1_79
śaṃkhatīrthābhidhaṃ tīrthamasti vai gaṃdhamādane ..
There is a sacred ford named Śaṅkhatīrtha on Gandhamādana.
3.1.25.1_80
śāṃtyarthamasya pāpasya tatra snāhi samāhitaḥ .. .. 52 ..
For the pacification of this sin, bathe there with a concentrated mind.
3.1.25.1_81
prāpsyase cittaśuddhiṃ tvamato vigatakalmaṣaḥ..
You will attain purity of mind, and will thereby be freed from stain.
3.1.25.1_82
tataśca labdhavijñānaḥ prāpsyase śāśvataṃ padam .. 53 ..
And then, having attained wisdom, you will reach the eternal abode.
3.1.25.1_83
ahaṃ dharmosmi yogīndra satyameva bravīmi te ..
I am Dharma, O lord of yogins; I speak truth to you."
3.1.25.1_84
iti dharmavacaḥ śrutvā vatsanābho mahāmuniḥ .. 54 ..
Having heard these words of Dharma, the great sage Vatsanābha,
3.1.25.1_85
snātukāmaḥ śaṃkhatīrthe gaṃdhamādanamanvagāt ..
wishing to bathe in Śaṅkhatīrtha, went towards Gandhamādana.
3.1.25.1_86
śaṃkhatīrthaṃ ca saṃprāpya tatra sasnau mahāmuniḥ .. 55 ..
Reaching Śaṅkhatīrtha, the great sage bathed there.
3.1.25.1_87
tato vigatapāpasya mano nirmalatāṃ gatam ..
Then, his sin departed, his mind attained purity.
3.1.25.1_88
tato'cireṇa kālena brahmabhūyamagānmuniḥ .. 56 ..
Then, before long, the sage attained oneness with Brahman.
3.1.25.1_89
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprāḥ śaṃkhatīrthasya vaibhavam..
"Thus has the power of Śaṅkhatīrtha been told to you, O brahmins,
3.1.25.1_90
yatra hi snānamātreṇa kṛtaghno'pi vimucyate .. 57 ..
where merely by bathing, even an ungrateful person is liberated.
3.1.25.1_91
mātṛdrohī pitṛdrohī gurudrohī tathaiva ca ..
One who injures his mother, one who injures his father, likewise one who injures his teacher,
3.1.25.1_92
anye kṛtaghnanivahā mucyaṃte'tra nimajjanāt .. 58 ..
and other hosts of ungrateful people are freed by immersing here.
3.1.25.1_93
ataḥ kṛtaghnairmanujaiḥ sevanīyamidaṃ sadā ..
Therefore, this [ford] should always be frequented by ungrateful men."
3.1.25.1_94
aho tīrthasya māhātmyaṃ yatkṛtaghnopi mucyate .. 59 ..
Ah, the māhātmya of the sacred ford, by which even the ungrateful person is freed!
3.1.25.1_95
akṛtvā bharaṇaṃ pitroradattvā gurudakṣiṇām..
Failing to maintain one's parents, failing to give the fee to the guru,
3.1.25.1_96
kṛtaghnatāṃ ca saṃprāpya maraṇāṃtā hi niṣkṛtiḥ .. 3.1.25.60 ..
and falling into ungratefulness—the expiation [for these] indeed ends only in death.
3.1.25.1_97
iha tu snānamātreṇa kṛtaghnasyāpi niṣkṛtiḥ ..
Here, however, by mere ritual ablution there is expiation even for the ungrateful person;
3.1.25.1_98
kṛtaghnatāpi tattīrthe snānamātrādvinaśyati .. 61 ..
even ungratefulness is destroyed in that sacred ford merely by ritual ablution.
3.1.25.1_99
anyeṣāṃ tucchapāpānāṃ sarveṣāṃ kimutādhunā .. 62 ..
What need be said now of all other trifling sins?
3.1.25.1_100
adhyāyamenaṃ paṭhedbhaktiyuktaḥ kṛtaghnopi martyāḥ sa pāpādvimuktaḥ ..
Even an ungrateful mortal who recites this chapter with devotion is freed from sin;
3.1.25.1_101
viśuddhāṃtarātmā gataḥ satyalokaṃ samaṃ brahmaṇā mokṣamapyāśu gacchet.. 63 ..
with an inner self purified, having gone to Satyaloka, he would quickly attain liberation together with Brahmā.
3.1.25.1_102
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye śaṃkhatīrthapraśaṃsāyāṃ vatsanābhakṛtaghnadoṣaśāṃtivarṇanaṃnāma pañcaviṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 25 ..
Thus ends the twenty-fifth chapter, titled 'The Description of the Pacification of Vatsanābha's Sin of Ungratefulness in the Praise of Śaṅkhatīrtha,' in the Setumāhātmya of the third section, the Brahmakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
