Sūta said:
3.1.28.36
āsītpurūravānāma śakratulyaparākramaḥ ..
In ancient times there was a king named Purūravas, equal in valor to Śakra,
3.1.28.37
rājarājasamo rājā purā hyamarapūjitaḥ .. 17 ..
equal to the king of kings [Kubera], worshipped indeed by the immortals.

dharmataḥ pālayāmāsa medinīṃ sa nṛpottamaḥ ..
That best of kings protected the earth according to dharma;
3.1.28.39

praśāsati mahīṃ sarvāṃ rājñi tasminmahāmatau ..
While that highly intelligent king was ruling the whole earth,
3.1.28.41
mitrāvaruṇaśāpena bhuvaṃ prāporvaśī dvijāḥ .. 19 ..
Urvaśī came to the earth because of the curse of Mitra and Varuṇa, O twice-born ones.
3.1.28.42
sā cacārorvaśī tatra rājñastasya purāṃtike ..
Urvaśī wandered there, near that king's city,
3.1.28.43
kokilālāpamadhuravīṇayopavane jagau .. 3.1.28.20 ..
and sang in a garden with a vīṇā sweet as the call of the cuckoo.

sa rājopavane raṃtuṃ kadāciddhṛtakautukaḥ ..
Desiring to take pleasure in the royal park on a certain occasion, curious,
3.1.28.45
ārūḍhaturagaḥ prāyāllalanāśatasaṃvṛtaḥ .. 21 ..
he mounted his horse and set out, surrounded by hundreds of women.
3.1.28.46
tādṛśīmurvaśīṃ tatra karasammitamadhyamām ..
[Seeing] Urvaśī there, whose waist could be spanned by a hand,
3.1.28.47
uvāca caināṃ rājāsau bhāryā mama bhaveti vai .. 22 ..
the king said to her: "Be my wife!"
3.1.28.48
sāpi kāmāturā tatra rājānaṃ pratyabhāṣata ..
She too, smitten with love, replied there to the king:
3.1.28.49
bhavatvevaṃ naraśreṣṭha samayaṃ yadi me bhavān .. 23 ..
"Let it be so, O best of men, if you will [keep] my condition.
3.1.28.50
kariṣyati tavābhyāśe vatsyāmi dhṛtakautukā ..
I will dwell near you, feeling joy."
3.1.28.51
kariṣye samayaṃ subhru tavāhamiti so'bravīt .. 24 ..
"I will keep your condition, O fair-browed one," he said.
3.1.28.52
athorvaśī babhāṣe taṃ purūravasamutsukā ..
Then Urvaśī eagerly said to that Purūravas:
3.1.28.53
putrabhūtaṃ mama yadi rakṣasyuraṇakadvayam .. 25 ..
"If you protect my pair of rams as if they were sons,
3.1.28.54
na nagno dṛśyase rājankadāpi yadi vai tathā ..
and if you are never seen naked, O king,
3.1.28.55
nocchiṣṭaṃ mama dadyāścettadā vatsye tavāṃtike .. 26 ..
and if you do not give me leftover food, then I will dwell in your presence.
3.1.28.56
ghṛtamātrāśanā cāhaṃ bhaviṣyāmi nṛpottama ..
And I will eat only clarified butter, O best of kings."
3.1.28.57
evamastviti rājoktāṃ tāṃ nināya nijaṃ gṛham .. 27 ..
Having said, "Let it be so," the king took her to his home.
3.1.28.58
alakāyāṃ sa bhūpālastathā caitrarathe vane ..
That king sported in Alakā, and also in the Caitraratha forest,
3.1.28.59
reme sarasvatītīre padmakhaṇḍamanorame .. 28 ..
and on the bank of the Sarasvatī, enchanting with lotus thickets.
3.1.28.60
ekaṣaṣṭiṃ sa varṣāṇi ramamāṇastayānayat ..
Sporting with her, he spent sixty-one years.
3.1.28.61
tenorvaśī pratidinaṃ vardhamānānurāgiṇī .. 29 ..
Because of that, Urvaśī, whose affection grew day by day,
3.1.28.62
spṛhāṃ na devaloke'pi cakāra tanumadhyamā ..
slender-waisted, had no desire even for the world of the gods.
3.1.28.63
nābhavadramaṇīyo'sau devalokastayā vinā .. 3.1.28.30 ..
Without her, that world of the gods was not delightful.
3.1.28.64
atastāmānayiṣyāmi devalokamiti dvijāḥ ..
"Therefore I will bring her back to the world of the gods," O twice-born ones—
3.1.28.65
viśvāvasurvicāryaivaṃ bhūrlokamagamatkṣaṇāt .. 31 ..
thinking thus, Viśvāvasu went in an instant to the earthly realm.
3.1.28.66
urvaśyāḥ samayaṃ rājñā viśvāvasurayaṃ saha ..
Viśvāvasu, knowing Urvaśī's agreement with the king,
3.1.28.67
viditvā saha gandharvaiḥ samaveto niśāṃtare .. 32 ..
assembled with the gandharvas in the middle of the night,
3.1.28.68
urvaśyāḥ śayanābhyāśājjagrāhoraṇakaṃ javāt ..
and swiftly seized a ram from beside Urvaśī's bed.
3.1.28.69
ākāśe nīyamānasya tasya śrutvorvaśī patim ..33..
Hearing him being carried away into the sky, Urvaśī to her husband
3.1.28.70
abravīnmatsutaḥ kena gṛhyate tyajyatāmayam ..
said: "By whom is my son being taken? Let him be released!
3.1.28.71
anāthā śaraṇaṃ yāmi kaṃ naraṃ gatacetanā..34..
Bereft of sense, helpless, to what man do I go for refuge?"
3.1.28.72
purūravāḥ samākarṇya vākyaṃ tasyā niśāṃtare ..
Hearing her words in the middle of the night, Purūravas
3.1.28.73
māṃ na nagnaṃ nirīkṣeta devīti na yayau tadā .. 35 ..
did not go forth then, thinking: “Let the goddess not see me naked.”
3.1.28.74
athānyamapyuraṇakaṃ gandharvāḥ pratigṛhya te ..
Then, seizing the other ram as well, those gandharvas
3.1.28.75
yayustasyoraṇasyāpi śabdaṃ śuśrāva corvaśī .. 36 ..
departed; and Urvaśī heard the bleat of that ram too.
3.1.28.76
anāthāyā mama suto gṛhyate taskarairiti ..
“The son of helpless me is being seized by thieves!”
3.1.28.77
cukrośa devī paruṣaṃ kaṃ yāmi śaraṇaṃ naram .. 37 ..
The goddess cried out harshly: “To what man shall I go for refuge?”
3.1.28.78
amarṣavaśamāpannaḥ śrutvā tadvacanaṃ nṛpaḥ ..
Overpowered by wrath upon hearing that statement, the king,
3.1.28.79
timireṇāvṛtaṃ sarvamiti mattvā sa khaṅgadhṛk .. 38 ..
thinking, “Everything is enveloped in darkness,” seized his sword
3.1.28.80
duṣṭaduṣṭa kuto yāsītyabhyadhāvadvaco vadan ..
and rushed forth shouting: “Wicked, wicked [thief]! Where are you going?”
3.1.28.81
tāvatsaudāminī dīptā gandha rvairjanitā bhṛśam .. 39 ..
Just then, a blazing flash of lightning was intensely produced by the gandharvas.
3.1.28.82
tatprabhāmaṃḍalairdevī rājānaṃ vigatāṃbaram ..
By its circles of light, the goddess saw the king stripped of his clothes;
3.1.28.83
dṛṣṭvā nivṛttasamayā tatkṣaṇādeva niryayau .. 3.1.28.40 ..
her condition having been violated, she departed that very instant.
3.1.28.84
tyaktvā hyuraṇakau tatra gaṃdharvā api niryayuḥ ..
Indeed, dropping both rams right there, the gandharvas also vanished.
3.1.28.85
rājā meṣau samādāya hṛṣṭaḥ svaśayanāṃtikam .. 41 ..
Taking the two rams, the king, delighted, returned beside his bed,
3.1.28.86
āgato norvaśīṃ tatra dadarśāyatalocanām ..
and did not see the large-eyed Urvaśī there.
3.1.28.87
tāṃ cāpaśyanvivastraśca babhrāmonmattavadbhuvi .. 42 ..
Not seeing her, unclothed, he wandered the earth like a madman.
3.1.28.88
kurukṣetraṃ gato rājā taṭāke padmasaṃkule ..
The king went to Kurukṣetra, and in a pond filled with lotuses
3.1.28.89
caturbhirapsarastrībhiḥ krīḍamānā dadarśa tām.. 43 ..
he saw her sporting with four apsaras women.
3.1.28.90
he jāye tiṣṭha manasā ghoreti vyāharanmuhuḥ ..
“O wife, stop in your mind, cruel one!” repeatedly uttering this,
3.1.28.91
evaṃ bahuprakāraṃ vai sa sūktaṃ prālapannṛpaḥ .. 44 ..
the king lamented indeed with the hymn in many ways.
3.1.28.92
abravīdurvaśī taṃ ca krīḍatī sāpsarogaṇaiḥ ..
And Urvaśī, playing with the hosts of apsarases, said to him:
3.1.28.93
mahārājālametena ceṣṭitena tavānagha .. 45 ..
“O great king, sinless one, enough of this conduct of yours!
3.1.28.94
tvatto garbhiṇyahaṃ pūrvamabdāṃte bhavatātra vai ..
I was made pregnant by you earlier; at the end of a year, indeed,
3.1.28.95
āgaṃtavyaṃ kumāraste bhaviṣyatyatidhārmikaḥ .. 46 ..
you must come here; you will have a most righteous son.
3.1.28.96
ekāṃ vibhāvarīṃ rājaṃstvayā vatsyāmi vai tadā ..
Then, O king, I shall dwell with you for a single night.”
3.1.28.97
ityukto nṛpatirhṛṣṭaḥ svapurīṃ prāviśaddvijāḥ .. 47..
Addressed thus, O brahmins, the king returned rejoicing to his city.
3.1.28.98
tāsāmapsarasāṃ sā tu kathayāmāsa taṃ nṛpam ..
She, however, spoke to those apsarases about the king:
3.1.28.99
ayaṃ sa puruṣaśreṣṭho yenāhaṃ kāmarūpiṇā .. 48 ..
“This is that best of men, with whom, assuming forms at will,
3.1.28.100
etāvaṃtaṃ mahākālamanurāgavaśāturā ..
overcome and yearning under the sway of passion,
3.1.28.101
uṣitāsmi sahānena sakhyo nṛpatinā ciram .. 49 ..
I lived for so long a time, O friends, with that king.”
3.1.28.102
evamuktāstataḥ sakhyastāmūcuḥ sādhusādhviti ..
Told this, her friends then said to her, “Splendid, splendid!
3.1.28.103
anena sākamāsyāmaḥ sarvakālaṃ vayaṃ sakhi .. 3.1.28.50 ..
We too, O friend, would dwell with him at all times.”
3.1.28.104
ityūcururvaśīṃ tatra sakhīmapsarasastadā ..
Thus the apsarases said to Urvaśī, their friend, at that time.
3.1.28.105
abde'tha pūrṇe rājāpi taṭākāṃti kamāyayau .. 51 ..
Then, when a year had elapsed, the king also came to the edge of the pond.
3.1.28.106
āgataṃ nṛpatiṃ dṛṣṭvā purūravasamurvaśī ..
Seeing King Purūravas arrive, Urvaśī,
3.1.28.107
kumāramāyuṣaṃ tasmai dadau saṃprītamānasā .. 52 ..
with a delighted mind, gave him his son, Āyus.
3.1.28.108
tena sākaṃ niśāmekāmuṣitā sānu rāgiṇī ..
Having dwelt with him for one night, that passionate woman,
3.1.28.109
paṃcaputrapradaṃ garbhaṃ tasmādāpāśu sorvaśī .. 53 ..
Urvaśī quickly received from him a pregnancy destined to grant five sons.
3.1.28.110
uvāca cainaṃ rājānamurvaśī paramāṃganā ..
And Urvaśī, the foremost woman, spoke to this king:
3.1.28.111
varaṃ dāsyaṃti gandharvā matprītyā tava bhūpate .. 54 ..
“Out of love for me, O king, the gandharvas will grant you a boon.
3.1.28.112
bhavatāṃ prārthyatāṃ tebhyo varo rājarṣisattama ..
Let a boon be asked of them by you, O best of royal sages.”
3.1.28.113
ityuktaḥ sa tayā rājā prāha gandharvasattamān .. 55 ..
Thus addressed by her, the king said to the best of the gandharvas:
3.1.28.114
ahaṃ saṃpūrṇakośaśca vijitārāti maṃḍalaḥ ..
“My treasury is full and the circle of my enemies is conquered;
3.1.28.115
salokatāṃ vinorvaśyāḥ prāptavyaṃ nānyadasti me .. 56 ..
apart from dwelling in the same world as Urvaśī, there is nothing else for me to attain.
3.1.28.116
atastayā sahorvaśyā kālaṃ netumahaṃ vṛṇe ..
Therefore, I choose to spend time together with Urvaśī.”
3.1.28.117
evamukte nṛpeṇātha gandharvāstuṣṭa mānasāḥ ..
When the king had spoken thus, the gandharvas, pleased in mind,
3.1.28.118
agnisthālīṃ pradāyāsmai procuścainaṃ nṛpaṃ tadā .. 57 ..
gave him a pot of fire and then said to that king:
3.1.28.119
.. gandharvā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gandharvas said:
3.1.28.120
agniṃ vedānusārī tvaṃ tridhā kṛtvā nṛpottama .. 58 ..
“Making this fire threefold in accordance with the Vedas, O best of kings,
3.1.28.121
iṣṭvā yajñena corvaśyāḥ sālokyaṃ yāhi bhūpate ..
and offering with sacrifice, O ruler of the earth, attain the world of Urvaśī!”
3.1.28.122
itīritastairādāya sthālīmagneryayau nṛpaḥ .. 59 ..
Addressed thus by them, the king took the pot of fire and went away.
3.1.28.123
aho batātimūḍhohamiti madhye vanaṃ nṛpaḥ ..
“Alas, indeed, I am utterly foolish!” Thus [thinking] in the middle of the forest, the king [reflected]:
3.1.28.124
urvaśī na mayā labdhā vahnisthālyā tu kiṃ phalam .. 3.1.28.60 ..
“Urvaśī has not been obtained by me; what use is a pot of fire?”
3.1.28.125
nidhāyaiva vane sthālīṃ svapuraṃ prayayau nṛpaḥ ..
Leaving the pot right there in the forest, the king went to his own city.
3.1.28.126
ardharātre vyatīte'sau vinidro'ciṃtayatsvayam .. 61 ..
When midnight had passed, unable to sleep, he reflected to himself:
3.1.28.127
urvaśīlokasiddhyarthaṃ mama gandharvapuṃgavaiḥ ..
“For the sake of attaining the world of Urvaśī, a pot of fire
3.1.28.128
agnisthālī saṃpradattā sā ca tyaktā mayā vane .. 62..
was given to me by the foremost gandharvas, and that was abandoned by me in the forest.
3.1.28.129
āhariṣye punaḥ sthālīmityutthāya yayau vanam ..
I shall bring the pot back.” Rising up, he went to the forest.
3.1.28.130
nāgnisthālīṃ dadarśāsau vane tatra purūravāḥ .. 63 ..
There in the forest, Purūravas did not see the pot of fire.
3.1.28.131
śamīgarbhamathāśvatthamagnisthāne vilokya saḥ ..
Then, seeing an aśvattha tree within a śamī tree in place of the fire,
3.1.28.132
vyaciṃtayanmayā sthālī nikṣiptātra vane purā .. 64 ..
He reflected: “Formerly, the pot was placed by me here in this forest,
3.1.28.133
sā cāśvatthaḥ śamīgarbhaḥ samabhūdadhunā tviha ..
and it has now turned into this aśvattha tree inside a śamī tree.
3.1.28.134
tasmādenaṃ samādāya vahnirūpamahaṃ puram.. .. 65 ..
Therefore, taking this [wood] which is fire by nature, having gone to the city,
3.1.28.135
gatvā kṛtvāraṇīṃ samyaktadutpannāgnimādarāt ..
and properly making churning-sticks (araṇīs), I shall with reverence worship the fire produced from it.”
3.1.28.136
upāsyāmīti niścitya svapuraṃ gatavānnṛpaḥ .. 66 ..
Having so resolved, the king went to his own city.
3.1.28.137
ramaṇīyāraṇīṃ cakre svāṃgulaiḥ pramitā masau ..
He made a charming fire-churning stick measured by his own finger-breadths.
3.1.28.138
nirmāṇasamaye rājā gāyatrīmajapaddvijāḥ .. 67 ..
At the time of its making, O brahmins, the king chanted the Gāyatrī.
3.1.28.139
gāyatryāḥ paṭhyamānāyā yāni saṃtyakṣarāṇi hi ..
Indeed, as many syllables as there are in the Gāyatrī being recited,
3.1.28.140
tāvadaṃgulimaryādāmakarodaraṇīṃ nṛpaḥ .. 68 ..
to that exact measure in finger-breadths the king made the churning-stick.
3.1.28.141
tatra nirmathanādagnitrayamutpādya bhūpatiḥ ..
Having produced the three fires there by churning,
3.1.28.142
urvaśīlokasaṃprāptiphalamuddiśya kāṃkṣitam .. 69 ..
aiming for the desired fruit of attaining Urvaśī's realm,
3.1.28.143
vedānusārī nṛpatirjuhāvāgnitrayaṃ mudā ..
the king, adhering to the Vedas, joyfully made offerings into the three fires.
3.1.28.144
tenaiva cāgnividhinā bahūnyajñānathātanot..3.1.28.70...
And by that very procedure of fire, he then performed many sacrifices.
3.1.28.145
tena gandharvalokāṃśca saṃprāpya jagatīpatiḥ..
Having thereby attained the Gandharva realms, the lord of the earth,
3.1.28.146
sahorvaśyā ciraṃ reme devaloke dvijottamāḥ..71..
sported for a long time together with Urvaśī in the world of the gods, O best of brahmins.
3.1.28.147
atha sarvāmaropetaḥ kadācidbalavṛtrahā..
Then once, the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra, accompanied by all the immortals,
3.1.28.148
nṛtyaṃ surāṃganānāṃ vai vyalokayata saṃsadi..72..
watched the dance of the celestial maidens in the assembly.
3.1.28.149
purūravā nṛpopyāyāttadā deveṃdrasaṃsadam ..
King Purūravas also came at that time to the assembly of the lord of the gods,
3.1.28.150
draṣṭuṃ surāṃganānṛtyaṃ manohāri divaukasām .. 73 ..
in order to watch the captivating dance of the celestial maidens of the sky-dwellers.
3.1.28.151
ekaikaśastāḥ śakrasya nanṛtuḥ puratoṃ'ganāḥ ..
One by one, those maidens danced before Śakra.
3.1.28.152
athorvaśī samāgatya nanarta purato hareḥ .. 74 ..
Then Urvaśī came and danced before Hari [Indra].
3.1.28.153
nṛttābhinayasāmarthyagarvayuktā tadorvaśī ..
Then Urvaśī, filled with pride in her skill of dancing and dramatic expression,
3.1.28.154
taṃ purūravasaṃ dṛṣṭvā jahāsātimanoharā .. 75 ..
saw that Purūravas and laughed most delightfully.
3.1.28.155
jahāsa tatra rājāpi tāṃ vilokya tadorvaśīm ..
The king too laughed there, beholding Urvaśī at that moment.
3.1.28.156
hāsasaṃkupitastatra nāṭyācāryo'tha tuṃburuḥ ..
Then Tumburu, the master of dramatic arts, enraged by their laughter,
3.1.28.157
śaśāpa tāvubhau kopādurvaśīṃ ca nṛpottamam .. 76 .. ..
in anger cursed both of them—Urvaśī and the best of kings.
3.1.28.158
.. tuṃbururuvāca .. ..
Tumburu said:
3.1.28.159
anekadevasaṃpūrṇasabhāyāmatra yatkṛtam .. 77 ..
“Since here, in an assembly filled with many gods,
3.1.28.160
yuvābhyāṃ hasitaṃ nṛttamadhye niṣkāraṇaṃ vṛthā ..
laughter was indulged in by you two in the midst of the dance without reason and in vain,
3.1.28.161
tasmājjhaṭiti rājeṃdra viyogo yuvayoḥ kṣaṇāt .. 78 ..
therefore, O best of kings, quickly, in an instant,
3.1.28.162
bhūyāditi śaśāpainaṃ sarvadaivatasaṃnidhau ..
let there be separation between you two!” Thus he cursed him in the presence of all the deities.
3.1.28.163
atha śapto nṛpastatra nāṭyācāryeṇa duḥkhitaḥ .. 79 ..
Then the king, cursed there by the master of dramatic arts, was sorrowful.
3.1.28.164
jagāma śaraṇaṃ tatra pāhipāhīti vajriṇam ..
He took refuge with the wielder of the thunderbolt [Indra], crying, “Protect me, protect me!”
3.1.28.165
uvāca dīnayā vācā puruhūtaṃ purūravāḥ .. 3.1.28.80 ..
With a plaintive voice Purūravas spoke to Puruhūta [Indra]:
3.1.28.166
urvaśyā saha sālokyasiddhyarthamahamiṣṭavān ..
“I performed sacrifices for the sake of attaining residence in the same world with Urvaśī;
3.1.28.167
atastasmā viyogo me'sahyaḥ syātpākaśāsana .. 81 ..
hence, separation from her would be unbearable to me, O chastiser of Pāka!”
3.1.28.168
ityuktavaṃtaṃ taṃ prāha sahasrākṣaḥ śacīpatiḥ ..
To him who spoke thus, the thousand-eyed husband of Śacī said:
3.1.28.169
śāpamokṣaṃ pravakṣyāmi mā bhaiṣīstvaṃ nṛpottama .. 82 ..
“I will tell you the release from the curse; do not fear, O best of kings.
3.1.28.170
dakṣiṇāṃbhonidhau puṇye gaṃdhamādanaparvate ..
In the southern ocean, on the holy Gandhamādana mountain,
3.1.28.171
sādhyāmṛtamiti khyātaṃ tīrthamasti mahattaram .. 83 ..
there is a supreme sacred ford known as Sādhyāmṛta,
3.1.28.172
sevitaṃ sarvadevaiśca siddhacāraṇakinnaraiḥ ..
served by all the gods, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, and Kinnaras,
3.1.28.173
sanakādi mahāyogimunivṛṃdaniṣevitam .. 84 ..
and frequented by the host of great yogic sages such as Sanaka and others.
3.1.28.174
bhuktimuktipradaṃ puṃsāṃ sarvaśāpavimokṣadam ..
Bestowing enjoyment and liberation upon men, granting release from all curses,
3.1.28.175
asti tīrthaṃ bhavāṃstatra gacchasva tvarayā nṛpa .. 85 ..
such a sacred ford exists; go there in haste, O king.
3.1.28.176
sarveṣāmamṛtaṃ snānādatra sādhyaṃ yatastataḥ ..
Since by ritual ablution here nectar (amṛta) is to be attained (sādhya) by all,
3.1.28.177
sādhyāmṛtamiti khyātaṃ sarvalokeṣu viśrutam .. 86 ..
it is therefore renowned as Sādhyāmṛta, celebrated in all the worlds.
3.1.28.178
tatra snānāttavorvaśyāḥ punaryogo bhaviṣyati ..
By ritual ablution there, your reunion with Urvaśī will occur,
3.1.28.179
mama loke nivāsaśca bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ .. 87 ..
and your dwelling in my world shall take place; there is no doubt.”
3.1.28.180
iti pratisamādiṣṭo nṛpaḥ saṃprītamānasaḥ ..
Instructed thus in return, the king, with a delighted mind,
3.1.28.181
sādhyāmṛtaṃ mahātīrthaṃ samuddiśya yayau kṣaṇāt .. 88 ..
instantly set out, heading toward the great sacred ford Sādhyāmṛta.
3.1.28.182
sasnau sādhyāmṛte tatra mahāpātakanāśane ..
He bathed there in Sādhyāmṛta, which destroys great sins.
3.1.28.183
tatra snānānnṛpo viprāḥ sadyaḥ śāpena mocitaḥ .. 89 ..
From the ritual ablution there, O brahmins, the king was instantly freed from the curse.
3.1.28.184
snānānaṃtaramevāsāvurvaśyā saha saṃgataḥ ..
Immediately after the ritual ablution, he was reunited with Urvaśī.
3.1.28.185
tayā saha vimānasthaḥ prayayāvamarāvatīm .. 3.1.28.90 ..
Seated in an aerial chariot with her, he set out for Amarāvatī.
3.1.28.186
reme punastayā sārdhaṃ devavaddevamaṃdire ..
Like a god, he sported again with her in the abode of the gods.
3.1.28.187
evaṃprabhāvaṃ tattīrthaṃ sādhyāmṛtamanuttamam .. 91 ..
Such is the power of that unequalled sacred ford, Sādhyāmṛta,
3.1.28.188
purūravā sahorvaśyā yatra snānena saṃgataḥ ..
where Purūravas was reunited with Urvaśī by means of a ritual ablution.
3.1.28.189
ato'tra tīrthe yaḥ snāyānmahāpātakanāśane .. 92..
Therefore, whoever bathes in this sacred ford, which destroys great sins,
3.1.28.190
vāṃchitām̐llabhate kāmānyāsyati svargamuttamam ..
attains desired wishes and will go to the highest heaven;
3.1.28.191
niṣkāmaḥ snāti cedvi prā mokṣamāpnoti mānavaḥ ..93..
if a person bathes without desire, O brahmins, he attains liberation.
3.1.28.192
imaṃ pavitraṃ pāpaghnamadhyāyaṃ paṭhate tu yaḥ..
Moreover, whichever person reads this pure, sin-destroying chapter,
3.1.28.193
śṛṇuyādvā manuṣyo'sau vaikuṃṭhe labhate sthitim ..94..
or listens to it, gains a dwelling in Vaikuṇṭha. (94)
3.1.28.194
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprā vaibhavaṃ pāpanāśanam ..
Thus to you, O brahmins, the sin-destroying majesty
3.1.28.195
sādhyāmṛtasya tīrthasya vistarācchraddhayā mayā .. 95 ..
of the Sādhyāmṛta sacred ford has been told by me at length with faith, (95)
3.1.28.196
yatpurā sanakādibhyaḥ proktavāṃścaturānanaḥ .. 96 ..
which the four-faced [Brahmā] formerly declared to Sanaka and the others. (96)
3.1.28.197
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye sādhyāmṛtatīrthapraśaṃsāyāṃ purūravaḥśāpavimokṣaṇavarṇanaṃnāmāṣṭāviṃśo adhyāyaḥ .. 28 ..
Thus ends the twenty-eighth chapter, entitled ‘The Description of the Release from the Curse of Purūravas in the Praise of the Sādhyāmṛta Sacred Ford’, in the Setumāhātmya of the third [section], the Brahmakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses. (28)
