3.1.33.63
bhūyopi nṛpateḥ satraṃ parāvasurupāyayau .. 3.1.33.30 ..
Parāvasu returned once again to the king's sacrificial session.
3.1.33.64
svaceṣṭitaṃ tu tatsarvamanujāya tato'bravīt ..
Then he related that entire deed of his to his younger brother.
3.1.33.65
mṛtaṃ svapitaraṃ śrutvā so'pi śokākulo'bhavat .. 31 ..
Hearing that his father was dead, he too became overcome with grief.
3.1.33.66
jyeṣṭho'nujaṃ tataḥ prāha vacanaṃ dvijasattamāḥ ..
Then the elder brother spoke these words to the younger, O best of brahmins:
3.1.33.67
mahatsatraṃ samārabdhaṃ bṛhaddyumnasya bhūpateḥ .. .. 32 ..
"A great sacrificial session of King Bṛhaddyumna has begun;
3.1.33.68
voḍhutvaśaktirnāstyasya karmaṇo bālakasya te ..
as for you, a boy, you have not the ability to bear [the burden of] this rite.
3.1.33.69
janakaśca hato rātrau mayāpi mṛgaśaṃkayā .. 33 ..
And our father has been slain by me at night, mistaking him for a deer;
3.1.33.70
prāyaścittaṃ ca karttavyaṃ brahmahatyā viśuddhaye ..
an expiation must be performed for purification from the sin of killing a brahmin.
3.1.33.71
madarthaṃ vratacaryāṃ tvaṃ cara tāta kaniṣṭhaka .. 34 ..
Dear younger brother, observe the practice of that vow on my behalf;
3.1.33.72
ekākī dhuramudvoḍhuṃ śakto'haṃ satrakarmaṇaḥ ..
I alone am able to bear the burden of the sacrificial session's rites."
3.1.33.73
arvāvasuriti prokto jyeṣṭhena sa tamabhya dhāt .. 35 ..
Thus addressed by his elder brother, Arvāvasu said to him:
3.1.33.74
tathā bhavatvahaṃ jyeṣṭha cariṣye vratamuttamam ..
"So be it, elder brother; I shall observe the excellent vow.
3.1.33.75
brahmahatyāviśuddhyarthaṃ tvaṃ satradhuramāvaha .. 36 ..
Bear the burden of the sacrificial session for the sake of purification from the sin of killing a brahmin."
3.1.33.76
ityuktvā sonu'jo jyeṣṭhaṃ tasmātsatrādvi niryayau ..
Having said this to his elder brother, the younger departed from that sacrificial session;
3.1.33.77
kārayāmāsa karmāṇi jyeṣṭhastasmingate katau .. 37 ..
when he was gone, the elder caused the rites to be performed in the sacrifice.
3.1.33.78
dvādaśābdaṃ kaniṣṭhopi brahmahatyāvrataṃ dvijāḥ ..
The younger also, having observed for twelve years the vow for the sin of killing a brahmin, O brahmins,
3.1.33.79
caritvā satrayāge'sminnājagāma punarmudā .. 38 ..
came back joyfully to this sacrificial session.
3.1.33.80
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṃ jyeṣṭho bṛhaddyumnamuvāca ha ..
Seeing his brother, the elder said to Bṛhaddyumna:
3.1.33.81
ayaṃ te brahmahā satramarvāvasurupāgataḥ .. 39 ..
"This Arvāvasu, a killer of a brahmin, has come to your sacrificial session;
3.1.33.82
enamutsārayāśu tvamasmātsatrānnṛpo ttama ..
drive him away quickly from this sacrificial session, O best of kings,
3.1.33.83
anyathā satrayāgasya phalahānirbhaviṣyati .. 3.1.33.40 ..
otherwise, there will be the loss of the fruit of the sacrificial session."
3.1.33.84
itīritaḥ sa svapreṣyairyāgāttamudavāsayat ..
Thus told, he had him expelled from the sacrifice by his attendants.
3.1.33.85
udvāsyamāno rājānamarvāvasurathābravīt .. .. 41 ..
While being expelled, Arvāvasu then said to the king:
3.1.33.86
na mayā brahmahatyeyaṃ bṛhaddyumna kṛtānagha ..
"This killing of a brahmin was not committed by me, O sinless Bṛhaddyumna;
3.1.33.87
kintu jyeṣṭhena me sā hi brahmahatyā kṛtā vibho .. 42 ..
rather, that killing of a brahmin was indeed committed by my elder brother, O lord.
3.1.33.88
brahmahatyāvrataṃ cīrṇaṃ tadarthaṃ ca mayā dhunā ..
And the vow for the sin of killing a brahmin has just now been observed by me on his behalf."
3.1.33.89
evamuktopi rājāsau vacasā sa parāvasoḥ .. 43 ..
Though addressed in this way, that king, on the word of Parāvasu,
3.1.33.90
arvāvasuṃ nijātsatrādudavāsayadāśu vai ..
promptly expelled Arvāvasu from his sacrificial session.
3.1.33.91
dhikkṛto brāhmaṇaiścāyaṃ yayau tūṣṇīṃ vanaṃ tadā .. 44 ..
Reproached by the brahmins, he then went silently to the forest.
3.1.33.92
munivṛndasamākīrṇaṃ tapovanamupetya saḥ ..
Having reached an ascetic forest filled with a multitude of sages,
3.1.33.93
arvāvasustapaścakre devairapi suduṣkaram .. 45 ..
Arvāvasu performed austerity very difficult even for the gods to perform.
3.1.33.94
tapaḥ kurvaṃstathādityamupatasthe samā hitaḥ ..
While performing austerity, he worshiped the sun with focused mind.
3.1.33.95
mūrtimāṃstapasā tasya mahatā'duṣṭadhīḥ svayam .. 46 ..
Embodied, of flawless intellect, he himself, through his great austerity,
3.1.33.96
āvirāsītsvayā dīptyā bhāsayañjagatītalam ..
manifested, illuminating the surface of the earth with his radiance—
3.1.33.97
karmasākṣī jagaccakṣurbhāskaro devatāgraṇīḥ .. 47 ..
the witness of deeds, the eye of the world, Bhāskara, the foremost of deities.
3.1.33.98
āvirbabhūvurdevāśca puraskṛtya śacīpatim ..
And the gods manifested, placing the husband of Śacī at their head;
3.1.33.99
indrādayastato devāḥ procurarvāvasuṃ dvijāḥ ..48..
then the gods, Indra and others, spoke to Arvāvasu, O brahmins:
3.1.33.100
arvāvaso tvaṃ pravarastapasā brahma caryataḥ ..
"O Arvāvasu, you are superior through austerity, through celibate studenthood,
3.1.33.101
ācāreṇa śrutenāpi vedaśāstrādiśikṣayā .. 49 ..
through conduct, and also through sacred learning, through instruction in the Vedas, śāstras, and the like.
3.1.33.102
nirākṛtovamānena tvaṃ parāvasunā bahu ..
You were greatly rejected with disdain by Parāvasu;
3.1.33.103
tathāpi kṣamayā yukto na kupyati bhavānyataḥ .. 3.1.33.50 ..
nevertheless, endowed with forbearance, you do not become angry, because,
3.1.33.104
yasmājjyeṣṭho'vadhīttātaṃ na hiṃsīstvaṃ mahāmate ..
since the elder killed your father, you, O noble-minded one, did not do violence,
3.1.33.105
brahmahatyāvrataṃ yasmāttadarthaṃ caritaṃ tvayā .. 51 ..
and since the vow for the sin of killing a brahmin was observed by you on his behalf,
3.1.33.106
ataḥ svīkurma he tvāṃ tu parākurmaḥ parāvasum ..
therefore, we accept you, but we cast off Parāvasu."
3.1.33.107
uktvaivaṃ balabhinmukhyāḥ sarve ca tridivālayāḥ .. 52 ..
Having spoken thus, all the dwellers of heaven headed by the slayer of Bala
3.1.33.108
taṃ te pravarayāmāsurnirāsuśca parāvasum ..
chose him as the foremost and rejected Parāvasu.
3.1.33.109
punariṃdrādayo devāḥ purodhāya divākaram .. 53 ..
Again the gods, Indra and others, placing the sun at their head,
3.1.33.110
arvāvasuṃ procuridaṃ varaṃ tvaṃ varayeti vai ..
said this to Arvāvasu: "Choose a boon!"
3.1.33.111
sa cāpi prārthayāmāsa janakasyotthitiṃ puna. .. 54 ..
And he requested the rising again of his father,
3.1.33.112
vadhe cāsmaraṇaṃ devānātmano janakasya vai ..
and from the gods that his father have no memory of his own slaying.
3.1.33.113
tathāstviti surāḥ procuḥ punarūcuridaṃ vacaḥ .. 55 ..
The gods said, "So be it," and again spoke these words:
3.1.33.114
varaṃ cānyaṃ pradāsyāmo varaya tvaṃ mahāmate ..
"And we shall grant another boon; choose, O highly wise one!"
3.1.33.115
evamuktaḥ suraiḥ soyamarvāvasurabhāṣata .. 56 ..
Thus addressed by the gods, Arvāvasu said: // 56
3.1.33.116
mama bhrāturaduṣṭatvaṃ bhavatu tridaśālayāḥ ..
"May my brother be free from evil, O dwellers of the thirty-fold realm!"
3.1.33.117
arvāvasorvacaḥ śrutvā tridaśāḥ punarabruvan .. 57 ..
Hearing Arvāvasu's words, the thirty gods spoke again: // 57
3.1.33.118
brāhmaṇasya piturghātānmahāndoṣaḥ parāvasoḥ ..
"From the slaying of his father, a brahmin, Parāvasu has incurred a great sin.
3.1.33.119
na hyanyakṛtapāpasya pareṇānuṣṭhitena vai ..58..
For indeed, regarding a sin committed by another, through an expiation performed by someone else // 58
3.1.33.120
prāyaścittena śāṃtiḥ syānmahāpātakapaṃcake ..
there can be no pacification among the five great sins.
3.1.33.121
piturbrāhmaṇahaṃtustu sutarāṃ nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ..59..
Moreover, for the killer of a father and a brahmin, there is by no means an expiation. // 59
3.1.33.122
ātmanānuṣṭhitenāpi vratena na hi duṣkṛtiḥ..
Even through an observance performed by oneself, that evil deed is not [removed];
3.1.33.123
parāvasostava bhrāturato naivāsti niṣkṛtiḥ ..3.1.33.60..
therefore, for your brother Parāvasu, there is certainly no release. // 3.1.33.60
3.1.33.124
ato'smābhiraduṣṭatvamasmai dātuṃ na śakyate ..
Hence, freedom from evil cannot be granted to him by us."
3.1.33.125
arvāvasuḥ punaḥprāha devāniṃdrapurogamān..61..
Arvāvasu spoke again to the gods headed by Indra: // 61
3.1.33.126
tathāpi yuṣmanmāhātmyātprasādādbhavatāṃ tathā..
"Nevertheless, through your greatness, and likewise through your favor,
3.1.33.127
piturbrāhmaṇahaṃturme bhrātustridaśasattamāḥ..62..
O best among the thirty gods, for my brother, the slayer of his father and a brahmin, // 62
3.1.33.128
yathā syānniṣkṛtirbrūta tathaiva kṛpayā yutāḥ ..
tell how there may be expiation, filled with compassion as you are."
3.1.33.129
evamarvāvasoḥ śrutvā vacaste tridaśālayāḥ .. 63 ..
Having thus heard the words of Arvāvasu, those dwellers of the thirty-fold realm, // 63
3.1.33.130
dhyātvā tu suciraṃ kālaṃ viniścityedamabuvan ..
after meditating for a very long time and having determined [it], said this:
3.1.33.131
upāyaṃ te pravakṣyāmastatpātakanivāraṇam ..64..
"We shall tell you a means that removes that sin. // 64
3.1.33.132
dakṣiṇāṃbunidhau puṇye rāmasetau vimuktide ..
In the sacred southern ocean, at the liberating Rāmasetu,
3.1.33.133
dhanuṣkoṭiriti khyātaṃ tīrthamasti vimuktidam .. 65 ..
there is a liberating sacred ford renowned as Dhanuṣkoṭi. // 65
3.1.33.134
brahmahatyāsurāpānasvarṇasteyavināśanam..
It destroys the slaying of a brahmin, the drinking of liquor, and the theft of gold;
3.1.33.135
gurutalpagasaṃsargadoṣāṇāmapi nāśanam .. 66 ..
it also destroys the sins of violating the guru's bed and association [with such sinners]. // 66
3.1.33.136
akāmenāpi yaḥ snāyādapavargaphalapradam ..
Even if one bathes without desire, it grants the fruit of liberation;
3.1.33.137
duḥsvapnanāśanaṃ dhanyaṃ narakakleśanāśanam .. 67 ..
it destroys bad dreams, brings good fortune, and removes the suffering of hell. // 67
3.1.33.138
kailāsādipadaprāptikāraṇaṃ paramārthadam ..
It is the cause of attaining the realm of Kailāsa and others, granting the highest truth;
3.1.33.139
sarvakāmamidaṃ puṃsāmṛṇadāridryanāśanam .. 68 ..
it fulfills all desires of men and destroys debts and poverty. // 68
3.1.33.140
dhanuṣkoṭirdhanu ṣkoṭirdhanuṣkoṭiritīraṇāt ..
From the mere utterance, 'Dhanuṣkoṭi, Dhanuṣkoṭi, Dhanuṣkoṭi,'
3.1.33.141
svargāpavargadaṃ puṃsāṃ mahāpuṇyaphalapradam .. 69 ..
it grants heaven and liberation to men, bestowing the fruit of great merit. // 69
3.1.33.142
tatra gatvā tava bhrātā snāyādyadi parāvasuḥ ..
If your brother Parāvasu goes there and bathes,
3.1.33.143
tatkṣaṇādeva te jyeṣṭho mucyate brahmahatyayā .. 3.1.33.70 ..
at that very moment your elder brother will be freed from the sin of slaying a brahmin. // 3.1.33.70
3.1.33.144
idaṃ rahasyaṃ sumahatprāyaścittamudīritam ..
This supreme secret of an expiation has been spoken [to you]."
3.1.33.145
uktvetyarvāvasuṃ devāḥ prayayuḥ svapurīṃ prati .. 71 ..
Having spoken thus to Arvāvasu, the gods departed to their own city. // 71
3.1.33.146
tata arvāvasurjyeṣṭhaṃ samādāya parāvasum ..
Then Arvāvasu, taking his elder brother Parāvasu,
3.1.33.147
rāmacandradhanuṣkoṭiṃ prayayau muktidāyinīm .. 72 ..
went to Rāmacandra's Dhanuṣkoṭi, the giver of liberation. // 72
3.1.33.148
setau saṃkalpamuktvā tu niyamena parāvasuḥ ..
Having made the ritual vow at the bridge with restraint, Parāvasu,
3.1.33.149
saha bhrātrā dhanuṣkoṭau sasnau pātakaśuddhaye .. 73 ..
along with his brother, bathed at Dhanuṣkoṭi for purification from the sin. // 73
3.1.33.150
snātvotthitaṃ dhanuṣkoṭau taṃ provācāśarīriṇī ..
To him as he emerged after bathing at Dhanuṣkoṭi, a bodiless voice said:
3.1.33.151
parāvaso vinaṣṭā te piturbrāhmaṇaghātajā .. 74 ..
"O Parāvasu, destroyed is your [sin] born of the slaying of your father and a brahmin, // 74
3.1.33.152
brahmahatyā mahā ghorā narakakleśakāriṇī ..
the exceedingly terrible slaying of a brahmin that causes the suffering of hell!"
3.1.33.153
ityuktvā virarāmātha sāpi vāgaśarīriṇī .. 75 ..
Having spoken thus, that bodiless voice fell silent. // 75
3.1.33.154
parāvasustadā viprāḥ kaniṣṭhena samanvitaḥ ..
Then Parāvasu, O brahmins, accompanied by his younger brother,
3.1.33.155
rāmacandradhanuṣkoṭiṃ praṇamya ca sabhaktikam .. 76 ..
bowed with devotion to Rāmacandra's Dhanuṣkoṭi, // 76
3.1.33.156
rāmanāthaṃ mahādevaṃ natvā bhaktipuraḥsaram ..
and, having bowed with devotion to Rāmanātha, the Great God,
3.1.33.157
vimuktapātako viprāḥ prayayau piturāśramam .. 77 ..
freed from sin, O brahmins, went to his father's hermitage. // 77
3.1.33.158
mṛtvotthitastadā raibhyo dṛṣṭvā putrau samāgatau ..
Then Raibhya, having risen from death, upon seeing his two sons arrived,
3.1.33.159
saṃtuṣṭahṛdayo hyāste putrābhyāṃ svāśrame tadā .. 78 ..
dwelt happily at heart in his own hermitage with his two sons. // 78
3.1.33.160
rāmacandradhanuṣkoṭau snānena hatapātakam ..
His sin destroyed by bathing at Rāmacandra's Dhanuṣkoṭi,
3.1.33.161
enaṃ parāvasuṃ sarve svīcakrurmunayastadā .. 79 ..
all the sages then accepted this Parāvasu. // 79
3.1.33.162
evaṃ parāvasoruktaṃ brahmahatyāvimokṣaṇam ..
Thus has been recounted to you, O eminent sages, Parāvasu's release
3.1.33.163
snānamātrāddhanuṣkoṭau yuṣmākaṃ munipuṃgavāḥ .. 3.1.33.80 ..
from the slaying of a brahmin by the mere bath at Dhanuṣkoṭi. // 3.1.33.80
3.1.33.164
surā pānādayo viprā naśyaṃtyevātra majjanāt ..
O brahmins, [sins such as] drinking liquor and others are indeed destroyed by plunging here.
3.1.33.165
satyaṃsatyaṃ punaḥ satyamuddhṛtya bhujamucyate .. 91 ..
It is spoken with arm raised: true, true, and true again! // 91
3.1.33.166
mahāpātakasaṃghāśca naśyeyurmajjanādiha ..
Even multitudes of great sins would be destroyed by plunging here.
3.1.33.167
ya imaṃ paṭhate'dhyāyaṃ brahmahatyāvimokṣaṇam .. 82 ..
Whoever recites this chapter on the release from the slaying of a brahmin, // 82
3.1.33.168
brahmahatyā vinaśyeta tatkṣaṇānnāsti saṃśayaḥ ..
the slaying of a brahmin would be destroyed instantly; there is no doubt.
3.1.33.169
surāpānādayo'pyasya śāṃtiṃ gaccheyuraṃjasā .. 83 ..
Even [sins such as] the drinking of liquor and others would immediately be pacified for him. // 83
3.1.33.170
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye dhanuṣkoṭipraśaṃsāyāṃ parāvasorbrahmahatyāvimo kṣaṇaṃnāma trayastriṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 33 ..
Thus ends the thirty-third chapter, entitled 'Release of Parāvasu from the Slaying of a Brahmin' in the Praise of Dhanuṣkoṭi in the Setumāhātmya in the Brahmakhaṇḍa, the third [section] of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the collection of eighty-one thousand [verses]. // 33
