Glorious Sūta said:
3.1.34.2
itihāsaṃ punarvakṣye dhanuṣkoṭipraśaṃsanam ..
"I shall recount again an ancient story praising Dhanuṣkoṭi,
3.1.34.3
sṛgālasya ca saṃvādaṃ vānarasya ca sattamāḥ.. ..1..
the dialogue between a jackal and a monkey, O excellent ones. // 1
3.1.34.4
sṛgālavānarau pūrvamāstāṃ jātismarāvubhau..
Formerly there was a jackal and a monkey, both remembering their previous births.
3.1.34.5
purāpi mānuṣe bhāve sakhāyau tau babhūvatuḥ..2..
Even previously, in human existence, they had been friends.
3.1.34.6
anyāṃ yoniṃ samāpannau sārgālīṃ vānarīṃ tathā ..
Having attained other wombs, namely that of a jackal and likewise that of a monkey,
3.1.34.7
sakhyaṃ samīyaturubhau sṛgālo vānaro dvijāḥ .. 3 ..
both of them entered into friendship, the jackal and the monkey, O twice-born.
3.1.34.8
kadācidrudrabhūmiṣṭhaṃ sṛgālaṃ vānaro'bravīt ..
Once, the monkey spoke to the jackal standing in the cremation ground,
3.1.34.9
śmaśānamadhye saṃprekṣya pūrvajātimanusmaran .. 4 ..
seeing him in the midst of the cemetery, remembering his former birth:
3.1.34.10
.. vānara uvāca .. ..
The monkey said:
3.1.34.11
sṛgāla pātakaṃ pūrvaṃ kimakārṣīḥ sudāruṇam ..
"Jackal, what very dreadful evil deed did you commit previously,
3.1.34.12
yastvaṃ śmaśāne mṛtakānpūtigaṃdhāṃśca kutsitān ..
that you eat vile corpses of foul stench in the cemetery?"
3.1.34.13
atsītyukto'tha kapinā sṛgālastamabhāṣata .. 5 ..
Thus addressed then by the monkey, the jackal said to him:
3.1.34.14
.. sṛgāla uvāca .. ..
The jackal said:
3.1.34.15
ahaṃ pūrvabhave hyāsaṃ brāhmaṇo vedapāragaḥ .. 6 ..
"In a previous birth I was indeed a brahmin who had crossed to the end of the Vedas,
3.1.34.16
vedaśarmābhidho vidvānsarvakarmakalāpavit ..
learned, named Vedaśarman, knowing the full aggregate of rituals.
3.1.34.17
brāhmaṇāya pratiśrutya na mayā tatra janmani .. 7 ..
Having promised a brahmin, in that birth I did not
3.1.34.18
kape dhanaṃ tadā dattaṃ sṛgālo'haṃ tato'bhavam..
give the wealth, O monkey; therefore I became a jackal.
3.1.34.19
tasmādevaṃvidhaṃ bhakṣyaṃ bhakṣayāmyatikutsitam .. 8 ..
Therefore I eat such utterly vile food.
3.1.34.20
pratiśrutya durātmāno na prayacchaṃti ye narāḥ ..
Those vile-minded men who, having promised, do not give,
3.1.34.21
kape sṛgālayoniṃ te prāpnuvaṃtyatikutsitām .. 9 ..
attain the utterly contemptible womb of a jackal, O monkey.
3.1.34.22
yo na dadyātpratiśrutya svalpaṃ vā yadi vā bahu ..
Whoever, having promised, does not give—whether little or much—
3.1.34.23
sarvāśāstasya naṣṭāḥ syuḥ ṣaṃḍhasyeva prajodbhavaḥ .. 3.1.34.10 ..
all his hopes are ruined, like offspring for a eunuch.
3.1.34.24
pratiśrutyāpradāne tu brāhmaṇāya plavaṃgama ..
When one fails to give after having promised to a brahmin, O monkey,
3.1.34.25
daśajanmārjitaṃ puṇyaṃ tatkṣaṇādeva naśyati .. 11 ..
the merit acquired over ten births is destroyed at that very instant.
3.1.34.26
pratiśrutyāpradānena yatpāpamupajāyate ..
The sin that is born from failing to give after having promised
3.1.34.27
nāśvamedhaśatenāpitatpāpaṃ pariśudhyati .. 12 ..
is not completely purified even by a hundred horse sacrifices.
3.1.34.28
na jānehamidaṃ pāpaṃ kadā naṣṭaṃ bhavediti ..
I do not know when this sin of mine will be destroyed;
3.1.34.29
tasmātpratiśrutaṃ dravyaṃ dātavyaṃ viduṣā sadā .. 13 ..
therefore, promised wealth must always be given by a wise man.
3.1.34.30
pratiśrutyāpradānena sṛgālo bhavati dhruvam ..
By failing to give after having promised, one certainly becomes a jackal;
3.1.34.31
tasmātprājñena viduṣā dātavyaṃ hi pratiśrutam .. 14 ..
therefore, what was promised must indeed be given by an intelligent, learned man."
3.1.34.32
ityuktvā sa sṛgālastaṃ vānaraṃ punarabravīt ..
Having said this, that jackal spoke again to the monkey:
3.1.34.33
bhavatā kiṃ kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ yena vānaratāmagāt .. 15 ..
"What sin was done by you, because of which you went to monkeyhood?
3.1.34.34
anāgaso vanacarānpakṣiṇo hiṃsi vānara ..
You hurt innocent forest-dwellers and birds, O monkey.
3.1.34.35
tatpātakaṃ vadasvādya vānaratvapradaṃ mama ..
Tell me today that evil deed which gave you monkeyhood."
3.1.34.36
ityuktaḥ sa sṛgālena sṛgālaṃ vānaro'bravīt .. 16 ..
Thus addressed by the jackal, the monkey spoke to the jackal:
3.1.34.37
.. vānara uvāca .. ..
The monkey said:
3.1.34.38
purā janmanyahaṃ vipro vedanātha iti smṛtaḥ .. .. 17 ..
"In a former birth, I was a brahmin known as Vedanātha.
3.1.34.39
viśvanātho mama pitā mamāṃbā kamalālayā ..
Viśvanātha was my father; Kamalālayā was my mother.
3.1.34.40
sṛgāla sakhyamabhavadāvayoḥ prāgbhave'pi hi .. 19 ..
O jackal, friendship indeed existed between the two of us even in our former birth.
3.1.34.41
tvaṃ na jānāsi tatsarvaṃ vedmyahaṃ puṇya gauravāt ..
You do not know all of that; I know it because of the weight of merit.
3.1.34.42
tapasārādhya giriśaṃ tatprasādātpurā mama .. 19 ..
Having propitiated Giriśa through austerity formerly, by his grace I have
3.1.34.43
atītabhāvivijñānamasti janmāṃtare'pi ca ..
knowledge of past and future even in another birth.
3.1.34.44
gomāyo tadbhave śākaṃ brāhmaṇasya hṛtaṃ mayā .. 3.1.34.20 ..
O jackal, in that birth vegetables belonging to a brahmin were stolen by me.
3.1.34.45
tatpāpādvānaro jāto narakānubhavādanu ..
From that sin, after experiencing hell, I was born as a monkey.
3.1.34.46
nāhartavyaṃ vipradhanaṃ haraṇānnarakaṃ bhavet .. 21 ..
A brahmin's wealth must not be taken; from taking it, hell ensues.
3.1.34.47
anaṃtaraṃ vānaratvaṃ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ..
Monkeyhood will follow thereafter, there is no doubt.
3.1.34.48
tasmānna brāhmaṇasvaṃ tu hartavyaṃ viduṣā sadā .. 22 ..
Therefore, property of a brahmin must never be stolen by a wise man.
3.1.34.49
brahmasvaharaṇātpāpamadhikaṃ naiva vidyate ..
There is no sin greater than the stealing of a brahmin's property.
3.1.34.50
pītavaṃtaṃ viṣaṃ haṃti brahmasvaṃ sakulaṃ dahet .. 23 ..
Poison kills only the one who drinks it; a brahmin's property will burn an entire family.
3.1.34.51
brahmasvaharaṇātpāpī kuṃbhīpākeṣu pacyate ..
Because of stealing a brahmin's property, the sinner is boiled in Kumbhīpāka.
3.1.34.52
paścānnarakaśeṣeṇa vānarīṃ yonimaśnute .. 24 ..
Afterwards, with the remainder of hell, he attains the womb of a monkey.
3.1.34.53
vipradravyaṃ na hartavyaṃ kṣaṃtavyaṃ teṣvataḥ sadā ..
Property of a brahmin must not be stolen, and patience must always be shown towards them.
3.1.34.54
bālā daridrāḥ kṛpaṇā vedaśāstrādivarjitāḥ .. 25 ..
Even if they are children, poor, miserable, or devoid of the Vedas and treatises,
3.1.34.55
brāhmaṇā nāvamaṃtavyāḥ kruddhāścedanalopamāḥ ..
brahmins must not be despised; if angered, they are equal to fire.
3.1.34.56
atītānāgataṃ jñānaṃ sṛgālākhilamasti me .. 26 ..
O jackal, I possess complete knowledge of the past and the future.
3.1.34.57
jñānamasti na me tvekametatpāpaviśodhanam..
Yet I lack just one knowledge: the purification of this sin.
3.1.34.58
jātismaro'pi hi bhavānbhāvikāryaṃ na budhyate ..27 ..
For you, though remembering your birth, do not understand future events.
3.1.34.59
atīteṣvapi kiṃcijjñaḥ pratibaṃdhavaśādbhavān ..
Even regarding the past, you know little because of an obstruction.
3.1.34.60
ato bhavānna jānīte bhāvyatītaṃ tathākhilam .. 28 ..
Therefore, you do not know the past and future in full.
3.1.34.61
kiyatkālaṃ sṛgālāto bhuktā vyasanamīdṛśam ..
O jackal, for how long will such misery be experienced by us?
3.1.34.62
āvayorasya pāpasya ko vā mocayitā bhavet .. .. 29 ..
Who indeed will be the deliverer of the two of us from this sin?"
3.1.34.63
evaṃ prabruvatostatra plavaṃgamasṛgālayoḥ..
While the monkey and the jackal were speaking thus there,
3.1.34.64
yadṛcchayā daivayogātpūrvapuṇyavaśāddvijāḥ ..3.1.34.30..
By chance, through divine dispensation, and by the power of past merit, O brahmins,
3.1.34.65
āyayau sa mahātejāḥ siṃdhudvīpāhvayo muniḥ..
there arrived that sage of great splendor named Sindhudvīpa,
3.1.34.66
bhasmoddhūlitasarvāṃgastripuṃḍrāṃkitamastakaḥ .. 31..
his whole body dusted with sacred ashes, his forehead marked with the tripuṇḍra,
3.1.34.67
rudrākṣamālābharaṇaḥ śivanāmāni kīrtayan ..
adorned with garlands of rudrākṣa beads, chanting the names of Śiva.
3.1.34.68
sṛgālavānarau dṛṣṭvā siṃdhudvīpābhidhaṃ munim ..
Seeing the sage named Sindhudvīpa,
3.1.34.69
praṇamya mudi tau bhūtvā papracchaturidaṃ tadā .. 32 ..
the jackal and the monkey bowed down, and being filled with joy, then asked this:
3.1.34.70
.. sṛgālavānarāvūcatuḥ .. ..
The jackal and the monkey said:
3.1.34.71
bhagavansarvadharmajña siṃdhudvīpa mahāmune .. 33 ..
O venerable one, knower of all duties, O Sindhudvīpa, great sage!
3.1.34.72
āvāṃ rakṣa kṛpādṛṣṭyā vilokaya muhurmudā ..
Protect the two of us! Look upon us again and again with joy, with an eye of compassion,
3.1.34.73
kapitvaṃ ca sṛgālatvamāvayoryena naśyati .. 34 ..
by which our states of being a monkey and a jackal may be destroyed.
3.1.34.74
tamupāyaṃ vadasvādya tvaṃ hi puṇyavatāṃ varaḥ ..
Tell us that means today, for you are the foremost among the meritorious.
3.1.34.75
anāthānkṛpaṇānajñānbālānrogāturāñjanān .. 35 ..
The destitute, the miserable, the ignorant, children, and people afflicted by disease—
3.1.34.76
rakṣaṃti sādhavo nityaṃ kṛpayā nirapekṣakāḥ ..
the virtuous always protect them out of compassion, without expecting anything in return.
3.1.34.77
tābhyāmitīritaḥ prājñaḥ siṃdhudvīpo mahāmuniḥ ..
Addressed thus by the two of them, the wise Sindhudvīpa, the great sage,
3.1.34.78
prāha tau kapigomāyū dhyātvā tu manasā ciram .. 36 ..
meditated in his mind for a long time, and then spoke to that monkey and jackal.
3.1.34.79
.. siṃdhudvīpa uvāca .. ..
Sindhudvīpa said:
3.1.34.80
jānāmyahaṃ yuvāṃ samyagghe sṛgālaplavaṃgamau .. 37 ..
I know the two of you well, O jackal and monkey!
3.1.34.81
sṛgāla prāgbhave tvaṃ vai vedaśarmābhidho dvijaḥ ..
O jackal, in your previous birth you were indeed a brahmin named Vedaśarman.
3.1.34.82
brāhmaṇāya pratiśrutya dhānyānāmāḍhakaṃ tvayā .. 38 ..
Having promised an āḍhaka measure of grain to a brahmin,
3.1.34.83
na dattaṃ tena pāpena sārgālīṃ yonimāptavān ..
it was not given by you; through that sin you obtained the womb of a jackal.
3.1.34.84
tvaṃ ca vānara pūrvasminvedanāthābhidho dvijaḥ .. 39 ..
And you, O monkey, were formerly a brahmin named Vedanātha.
3.1.34.85
brāhmaṇasya gṛhācchākaṃ hṛtaṃ cauryāttvayā tata ..
Vegetables were stolen by you through theft from a brahmin's house, O dear one;
3.1.34.86
prāptosi vānarīṃ yoniṃ sarvapakṣibhayaṃkarīm .. 3.1.34.40 ..
therefore you have attained the womb of a monkey, terrifying to all birds.
3.1.34.87
yuvayoḥ pāpaśāṃtyarthamupāyaṃ pravadāmyaham ..
I shall declare a means for the pacification of the sin of you two.
3.1.34.88
dakṣiṇāṃbunidhau rāmadhanuṣkoṭau yuvāmaram .. 41 ..
Both of you, go quickly to the southern ocean, to Rāma's Dhanuṣkoṭi;
3.1.34.89
gatvātra kurutaṃ snānaṃ tena pāpādvimokṣyathaḥ ..
perform ritual ablution there, and by that you will be freed from sin.
3.1.34.90
purā kirātīsaṃsargātsumatirbrāhmaṇaḥ surām ..
In ancient times, a brahmin named Sumati, through associating with a Kirāta woman, drank wine;
3.1.34.91
pītavāntsa dhanuṣkoṭau snātvā pāpādvimocitaḥ .. 42 ..
having bathed at Dhanuṣkoṭi, he was delivered from sin.
3.1.34.92
.. sṛgāla vānarāvūcatuḥ .. ..
The jackal and the monkey said:
3.1.34.93
sumatiḥ kasya putro'sau kathaṃ ca sa surāṃ papau .. 43 ..
Whose son was that Sumati, and how did he drink wine?
3.1.34.94
kathaṃ kirātyāṃ sakto'bhūtsiṃdhudvīpa mahāmate ..
How became he attached to the Kirāta woman, O Sindhudvīpa of great intellect?
3.1.34.95
āvayorvistarādetadvada tvaṃ kṛpāyādhunā .. 44 ..
Please tell this in detail to the two of us now, out of compassion.
3.1.34.96
.. siṃdhudvīpa uvāca .. ..
Sindhudvīpa said:
3.1.34.97
mahārāṣṭrābhidhe deśe brāhmaṇaḥ kaścidāstikaḥ ..
In the country named Mahārāṣṭra, there was a certain pious brahmin
3.1.34.98
yajñadeva iti khyāto vedavedāṃgapāragaḥ .. 45 ..
renowned as Yajñadeva, who had mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas,
3.1.34.99
dayālurātitheyaśca śivanārāyaṇārcakaḥ ..
compassionate, hospitable, and a worshipper of Śiva and Nārāyaṇa.
3.1.34.100
sumatirnāma putro'bhūdyajñadevasya tasya vai .. 46 ..
That Yajñadeva indeed had a son named Sumati.
3.1.34.101
pitarau sa parityajya bhāryāmapi pativratām ..
Abandoning both his parents and also his devoted wife,
3.1.34.102
prayayāvutkale deśe viṭagoṣṭhīparāyaṇaḥ .. 47 ..
he went off to the Utkala country, dedicated to the company of rakes.
3.1.34.103
kācitkirātī taddeśe vasantī yuvamohinī ..
A certain Kirāta woman lived in that country, charming to young men;
3.1.34.104
yūnāṃ samastadravyāṇi pralobhya jagṛhe ciram .. 48 ..
alluring young men, she took away all their wealth for a long time.
3.1.34.105
tasyā gṛhaṃ sa prayayau sumatirbrāhmaṇādhamaḥ ..
Sumati, the lowest of brahmins, went to her house.
3.1.34.106
sumatiṃ sā na jagrāha kirātī nirdhanaṃ dvijam .. 49 ..
Because he was penniless, that Kirāta woman did not accept the brahmin Sumati.
3.1.34.107
tayā tyakto'tha sumatistatsaṃyogaikatatparaḥ ..
Rejected by her, Sumati, solely intent on union with her,
3.1.34.108
itastataścorayitvā bahudravyāṇi saṃtatam .. 3.1.34.50 ..
constantly stole a great deal of wealth from here and there,
3.1.34.109
dattvā tayā ciraṃ reme tadgrahe bubhuje ca saḥ ..
gave it to her, and dallied with her for a long time, and ate food in her house.
3.1.34.110
ekena caṣakeṇāsau tayā saha surāṃ papau .. 51 ..
He drank wine with her from a single goblet.
3.1.34.111
evaṃ sa bahukālaṃ vai ramamāṇastayā saha ..
Dallying thus with her for a long time,
3.1.34.112
pitarau nijapatnīṃ ca nāsmaradviṣayāturaḥ .. 52 ..
afflicted by sensual desire, he did not remember his parents or his own wife.
3.1.34.113
sa kadācitkirātaistu cauryaṃ kartuṃ yayau saha ..
Once, he went with the Kirātas to commit robbery.
3.1.34.114
dravyaṃ hartuṃ kirātāste lāṭānāṃ viṣayaṃ yayuḥ ..53..
Those Kirātas went to the region of the Lāṭas to seize wealth.
3.1.34.115
viprasya kasyacidgehe so'pi kairātaveṣadhṛk..
He too, disguised in the attire of a Kirāta,
3.1.34.116
yayau corayituṃ dravyaṃ sāhasī khaṅgahastavān .. 54 ..
went into the house of a certain brahmin to steal wealth, reckless, sword in hand.
3.1.34.117
tadgṛhasvāminaṃ vipraṃ hatvā khaḍgena sāhasī ..
Having slain the master of that house, a brahmin, with a sword, the reckless one,
3.1.34.118
samādāya bahu dravyaṃ kirātībhavanaṃ yayau .. 55 ..
seized much wealth and went to the house of the Kirāta woman.
3.1.34.119
taṃ yāṃtamanuyāti sma brahmahatyā bhayaṃkarī ..
As he went, the terrifying Brahminicide pursued him,
3.1.34.120
nīlavastradharā bhīmā bhṛśaṃ raktaśiroruhā .. 56 ..
dreadful, wearing dark blue garments, with extremely red hair,
3.1.34.121
garjaṃtī sāṭṭahāsaṃ sā kaṃpayantī ca rodasī ..
roaring with wild laughter and making the two worlds tremble.
3.1.34.122
anudrutastayā so'yaṃ babhrāma jagatītale .. 57 ..
Pursued by her, he wandered over the surface of the earth.
3.1.34.123
evaṃ bhramanbhuvaṃ sarvāṃ kadācitsumatiḥ svayam ..
Wandering thus across the entire earth, one day Sumati himself...
3.1.34.124
svaṃ grāmaṃ prayayau bhītyā he sṛgālaplavaṃgamau .. 58 ..
he went to his own village out of fear, O jackal and monkey!
3.1.34.125
anudrutastayā bhītaḥ prayayau svagṛhaṃ prati ..
Pursued by her, terrified, he went toward his own home;
3.1.34.126
brahmahatyāpyanudrutya tena sākaṃ gṛhaṃ yayau .. 59 ..
pursuing [him], the brahmahatyā too went with him to the house.
3.1.34.127
pitaraṃ rakṣa rakṣeti sumatiḥ śaraṇaṃ yayau ..
Sumati fled for refuge to his father, crying, “Save me! Save me!”
3.1.34.128
mā bhaiṣīriti taṃ procya pitā rakṣitumudyataḥ ..
Saying to him, “Do not fear,” his father prepared to protect him.
3.1.34.129
tadānīṃ brahmahatyeyaṃ tattātaṃ pratyabhāṣata .. 3.1.34.60 .. .
. brahmahatyovāca .. ..
Then that brahmahatyā addressed his father: / Brahmahatyā said:
3.1.34.130
mainaṃ tvaṃ pratigṛhṇīṣva yajñadeva dvijottama .. 61 ..
“Do not take him in, Yajñadeva, best of brahmins!
3.1.34.131
asau surāpī steyī ca brahmahā cātipātakī ..
He is a drinker of liquor, a thief, a killer of brahmins, and a perpetrator of supreme sins;
3.1.34.132
mātṛdrohī pitṛdrohī bhāryātyāgī ca pāpakṛt .. 62 ..
he has wronged his mother, wronged his father, abandoned his wife, and done evil deeds;
3.1.34.133
kirātīsaṃgaduṣṭaśca nainaṃ muñcāmyahaṃ dvija ..
he is defiled by union with a Kirāta woman; I will not release him, O brahmin!
3.1.34.134
gṛhṇāsi cedimaṃ vipra mahāpātakinaṃ sutam .. 63 ..
If you take in this son who is a perpetrator of great sins, O brahmin,
3.1.34.135
tvadbhāryāmasya bhāryāṃ ca tvāṃ ca putramimaṃ dvija ..
your wife, his wife, you, and this son, O brahmin,
3.1.34.136
bhakṣayiṣyāmi vaṃśaṃ ca tasmānmuñca sutaṃ tvimam .. .. 64 ..
and your whole lineage I will consume; therefore abandon this son!
3.1.34.137
imaṃ tyajasi cetputraṃ yuṣmānmokṣyāmi sāṃpratam ..
If you abandon this son, I will let the rest of you go at once.
3.1.34.138
naikasyārthe kulaṃ hantumarhasi tvaṃ mahāmate ..
You ought not to destroy your family for the sake of a single person, O wise one!”
3.1.34.139
ityuktaḥ sa tayā tatra yajñadevo'bravīcca tām .. 65 ..
Addressed thus by her there, Yajñadeva replied to her:
3.1.34.140
.. yajñadeva uvāca .. ..
Yajñadeva said:
3.1.34.141
bādhate māṃ sutasnehaḥ kathamenaṃ parityaje ..
“Love for my son afflicts me; how can I abandon him?”
3.1.34.142
brahmahatyā tadākarṇya dvijoktaṃ tamabhāṣata .. 66 ..
Hearing what was said by the brahmin, the brahmahatyā then said to him:
3.1.34.143
.. brahmahatyovāca .. ..
Brahmahatyā said:
3.1.34.144
ayaṃ hi patito'bhūtte varṇāśramabahiṣkṛtaḥ .. 67 ..
“Indeed, this [son] of yours has become fallen, cast out from the varṇas and āśramas.
3.1.34.145
putresminmā kuru snehaṃ niṃditaṃ tasya darśanam..
Do not show affection for this son; even the sight of him is censured.”
3.1.34.146
ityuktvā brahmahatyā sā yajñadevasya paśyataḥ .. 68 ..
Having spoken thus, while Yajñadeva looked on, that brahmahatyā
3.1.34.147
talena prajahārāsya putraṃ sumatināmakam ..
struck his son named Sumati with the palm of her hand.
3.1.34.148
ruroda tāta tāteti pitaraṃ prabruvanmuhuḥ .. 69 ..
He wept, repeatedly crying out to his father: “Father! Father!”
3.1.34.149
rurudurjanako mātā bhāryāpi sumatestadā ..
Then his father, his mother, and even Sumati's wife wept.
3.1.34.150
etasminnaṃtare tatra durvāsāḥ śaṃkarāṃśajaḥ .. 3.1.34.70 ..
In the meantime, Durvāsas, born from a portion of Śaṃkara,
3.1.34.151
diṣṭavā samāyayau yogī he sṛgālaplavaṃgamau ..
arrived there by good fortune, the yogi, O jackal and monkey!
3.1.34.152
yajñadevo'tha taṃ dṛṣṭvā muniṃ rudrāvatārakam..
Then Yajñadeva, seeing that sage, an incarnation of Rudra,
3.1.34.153
śrutvā praṇamya śaraṇaṃ yayāce putrakāraṇāt .. 71 ..
bowed down and begged for refuge on account of his son.
3.1.34.154
.. pitovāca .. ..
The father said:
3.1.34.155
durvāsastvaṃ mahāyogī sākṣādvai śaṃkarāṃśajaḥ .. 72 ..
“O Durvāsas, you are a great yogi, truly born directly from a portion of Śaṃkara.
3.1.34.156
tvaddarśanamapuṇyānāṃ bhavitā na kadācana ..
Darśana of you can never happen for the meritless.
3.1.34.157
brahmahā ca surāpī ca steyī cābhūtsuto mama .. 73 ..
My son has become a killer of brahmins, a drinker of liquor, and a thief;
3.1.34.158
enaṃ prahartumāyātā brahmahatyā vivartate ..
this brahmahatyā, having come to strike him down, is turning about [here].
3.1.34.159
bhūyādyathā me putro'yaṃ mahāpātakamocitaḥ .. 74 ..
So that this son of mine may be freed from the great sin,
3.1.34.160
ghorā ca brahmahatyeyaṃ yathā śīghraṃ layaṃ vrajet ..
and so that this terrible brahmahatyā may swiftly dissolve away,
3.1.34.161
tamupāyaṃ vadasvādya mama putre dayāṃ kuru .. 79 ..
tell that means today; have compassion on my son!
3.1.34.162
ayameva hi putro me nānyo'sti tanayo mune ..
Indeed, he is my only son; I have no other child, O sage.
3.1.34.163
asminmṛte tu vaṃśo me samucchidyetsamūlataḥ .. 76 ..
If he dies, my lineage will be cut off completely at the root.
3.1.34.164
tataḥ pitṛbhyaḥ piṃḍānāṃ dātāpi na bhaveddhruvam ..
Then surely there will not even be an offerer of rice-balls to the ancestors.
3.1.34.165
ataḥ kṛpāṃ kuruṣva tvamasmāsu bhagavanmune .. 77 ..
Therefore show mercy unto us, O venerable sage!”
3.1.34.166
ityuktaḥ sa tadovāca durvāsāḥ śaṃkarāṃśajaḥ ..
Addressed thus, Durvāsas, born of a portion of Śaṃkara,
3.1.34.167
dhyātvā tu suciraṃ kālaṃ yajñadevaṃ dvijottamam .. 78 ..
having meditated for a very long time, then spoke to Yajñadeva, the best of brahmins.
3.1.34.168
.. durvāsā uvāca .. ..
Durvāsas said:
3.1.34.169
ẏajñadeva kṛtaṃ pāpamatikrūraṃ sutena te ..
“O Yajñadeva, an exceedingly cruel sin has been committed by your son;
3.1.34.170
nāsya pāpasya śāṃtiḥ syātprāyaścittāyutairapi .. 79 ..
there could be no pacification of this sin even through tens of thousands of expiations.
3.1.34.171
athāpi te sutasyāhamasya pāpasya śāṃtaye ..
Nevertheless, for the pacification of this sin of your son,
3.1.34.172
prāyaścittaṃ vadiṣyāmi śṛṇu nānyamanā dvija .. 3.1.34.80 ..
I will tell an expiation; listen with undivided mind, O brahmin!
3.1.34.173
śrīrāmadhanuṣaḥ koṭau dakṣiṇe salilārṇave ..
At the tip of glorious Rāma's bow, in the southern ocean of waters,
3.1.34.174
snāti cettava putro'yaṃ pātakānmokṣyate kṣaṇāt .. 81 ..
if this son of yours bathes, he will be freed from the sin in an instant,
3.1.34.175
durvinītābhidho vipro yatra snānāddvijottama ..
where, by ritual ablution, the brahmin named Durvinīta, O best of brahmins,
3.1.34.176
gurustrīgama pāpebhyastatkṣaṇādeva mocitaḥ .. 82 ..
was freed that very instant from the sins of having carnal knowledge of the guru's wife.
3.1.34.177
saiṣā śrīdhanuṣaḥ koṭī rāghavasya svayaṃ hareḥ ..
That very tip of the glorious bow of Rāghava, who is Hari himself,
3.1.34.178
snānamātreṇa pāpaughaṃ nāśayettvatsutasya sā .. 83 ..
would destroy the flood of your son's sins merely by ritual ablution.”
3.1.34.179
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye dhanuṣkoṭipraśaṃsāyāṃ sṛgālavānarasaṃvāde sumatimahāpātaka vimokṣopāyakathanaṃnāma catustriṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 34 ..
Thus ends the thirty-fourth chapter, entitled ‘The Account of the Means for the Release of Sumati from Great Sins,’ in the Praise of Dhanuṣkoṭi in the dialogue between the jackal and the monkey, in the Setumāhātmya of the third [section], the Brahmakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
