śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The glorious Sūta said:
3.1.39.2
athātaḥ saṃpravakṣyāmi kapitīrthasya vaibhavam ..
“Now, therefore, I will describe the majesty of Kapitīrtha.
3.1.39.3
tattīrthaṃ sakalaiḥ pūrvaṃ gaṃdhamādanaparvate .. 1 ..
That sacred ford was formerly, on Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.39.4
sarveṣāmupakārāya kapibhirnirmitaṃ dvijāḥ ..
created by all the monkeys for the benefit of all beings, O brahmins.
3.1.39.5
rāvaṇādiṣu rakṣaḥsu hateṣu tadanaṃtaram .. 2 ..
After Rāvaṇa and the other demons had been slain,
3.1.39.6
tīrthaṃ nirmāya tatraiva sasnuste kapayo mudā ..
having created the sacred ford right there, those monkeys bathed with joy.
3.1.39.7
tīrthāya ca varaṃ prāduḥ kapayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ .. .. 3..
And the monkeys, who could assume any form at will, granted a boon to the sacred ford:
3.1.39.8
asmiṃstīrthe nimagnā ye bhaktipravaṇacetasaḥ ..
‘Those who plunge into this sacred ford with minds intent on devotion
3.1.39.9
te sarve muktibhājaḥ syurmahāpātakamocitāḥ .. 4 ..
shall all partake of liberation, released from great sins.
3.1.39.10
atra tīrthe nimagnānāṃ na syānnarakajaṃ bhayam ..
For those who plunge into this sacred ford there shall be no fear born of hell.
3.1.39.11
atra snātā narāḥ sarve dāridrayaṃ nāpnuvaṃti hi .. 5 ..
All men who have bathed here indeed never incur poverty.
3.1.39.12
atra tīrthe nimagnānāṃ yamapīḍāpi no bhavet ..
For those who plunge into this sacred ford there shall not even be torment inflicted by Yama.’
3.1.39.13
kapitīrthaṃ prayāsye'hamiti yaḥ satataṃ bruvan .. 6 ..
He who constantly says, "I will go to Kapitīrtha,"
3.1.39.14
vrajecchatapadaṃ viprāḥ sa yāyātparamaṃ padam ..
and walks a hundred paces, O brahmins, shall go to the supreme abode.
3.1.39.15
etattīrthasamaṃ tīrthaṃ na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati .. 7 ..
A sacred ford equal to this sacred ford has never been, nor will ever be. // 7
3.1.39.16
evaṃ varaṃ tu te dattvā tīrthāyāsmai kapīśvarāḥ ..
Having thus granted a boon to this sacred ford, the monkey lords,
3.1.39.17
rāmaṃ dāśarathiṃ sarve praṇamyātha yayācire .. 8 ..
all bowing down to Rāma, son of Daśaratha, then made a request: // 8
3.1.39.18
svāmiṃstvayāsmai tīrthāya dīyatāṃ varamadbhutam..
"O Lord, let a wonderful boon be granted by you to this sacred ford!"
3.1.39.19
kapibhiḥ prārthito viprā rāmacaṃdro'tiharṣitaḥ .. 9..
Beseeched by the monkeys, O brahmins, Rāmacandra, exceedingly delighted, // 9
3.1.39.20
tattīrthāya varaṃ prādātkapīnāṃ prītikāraṇāt ..
granted a boon to that sacred ford for the sake of pleasing the monkeys:
3.1.39.21
atra tīrthe nimagnānāṃ gaṃgāsnānaphalaṃ labhet .. 3.1.39.10 ..
"Those who bathe in this sacred ford shall obtain the fruit of bathing in the Gaṅgā, // 10
3.1.39.22
prayāgasnānajaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvatīrthaphalaṃ tathā ..
the merit born of bathing at Prayāga, and likewise the fruit of all sacred fords;
3.1.39.23
agniṣṭomādiyāgānāṃ phalaṃ bhūyādanuttamam .. 11 ..
may the unequalled fruit of sacrifices such as the Agniṣṭoma be theirs! // 11
3.1.39.24
gāyatryādimahāmaṃtrajapapuṇyaṃ tathā bhavet ..
So too, let there be the merit of chanting great mantras such as the Gāyatrī;
3.1.39.25
gosahasrapradanṛṇāṃ prāpnotyavikalaṃ phalam .. 12 ..
one obtains the full fruit of those men who bestow a thousand cows. // 12
3.1.39.26
caturṇāmapi vedānāṃ pārāyaṇaphalaṃ labhet ..
One shall obtain the fruit of reciting the four Vedas completely;
3.1.39.27
brahmaviṣṇumaheśādidevapūjāphalaṃ labhet .. 13 ..
one shall obtain the fruit of worshiping deities such as Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśa." // 13
3.1.39.28
kapitīrthāya rāmoyaṃ prādādevaṃ varaṃ dvijāḥ ..
Thus, O twice-born ones, this Rāma granted a boon to Kapitīrtha.
3.1.39.29
evaṃ rāmeṇa datte tu vare tatra kutūhalāt ..14..
When the boon was thus granted by Rāma there, out of curiosity, // 14
3.1.39.30
ṣaḍardhanayano brahmā sahasrākṣo yamastathā ..
the three-eyed one [Śiva], Brahmā, the thousand-eyed one [Indra], and Yama;
3.1.39.31
varuṇognistathā vāyuḥ kuberaścaṃdramā api ..15..
Varuṇa, Agni, and Vāyu, Kubera, and the Moon as well; // 15
3.1.39.32
ādityo nirṛtiścaiva sādhyāśca vasavastathā ..
the Sun and Nirṛti, and the Sādhyas, and the Vasus;
3.1.39.33
anye'pi tridaśāḥ sarve viśvedevādayastathā .. 16 ..
and all the other gods, the Viśvedevas and the rest; // 16
3.1.39.34
atrirbhṛgustathā kutso gautamaśca parāśaraḥ ..
Atri, Bhṛgu, and Kutsa, Gautama and Parāśara,
3.1.39.35
kaṇvo'gastyaḥ sutīkṣṇaśca viśvāmitrādayo'pare .. 17 ..
Kaṇva, Agastya, and Sutīkṣṇa, Viśvāmitra, and other sages; // 17
3.1.39.36
yoginaḥ sanakādyāśca nāradādyāḥ surarṣayaḥ ..
yogins such as Sanaka and others, and divine seers such as Nārada and others—
3.1.39.37
rāmadattavaraṃ tīrthaṃ ślāghaṃte bahudhā tadā .. 18..
all then praised the sacred ford blessed with Rāma's boon in many ways. // 18
3.1.39.38
sasnuśca tatra tīrthe te sarvābhīṣṭapradāyini ..
And they bathed in that sacred ford, which grants all desired things.
3.1.39.39
kapibhirnirmitaṃ yasmādetattīrthamanuttamam .. 19 ..
"Because this unsurpassed sacred ford was made by monkeys, // 19
3.1.39.40
kapitīrthamiti khyātimato loke prayāsyati..
it shall therefore go by the renown of 'Kapitīrtha' in the world!"
3.1.39.41
ityapyavocaṃste sarve devāśca munayastathā .. 3.1.39.20 ..
Thus spoke all those gods and sages. // 20
3.1.39.42
tasmādavaśyaṃ gaṃtavyaṃ kapitīrthaṃ mumukṣubhiḥ ..
Therefore, Kapitīrtha must certainly be visited by seekers of liberation.
3.1.39.43
raṃbhā kauśikaśāpena śilābhūtā purā dvijāḥ .. 21..
In ancient times, O twice-born ones, Rambhā, having turned into a stone through Kauśika's curse, // 21
3.1.39.44
tatra snātvā nijaṃ rūpaṃ prapede ca divaṃ yayau ..
bathed there, regained her own form, and went to heaven.
3.1.39.45
asya tīrthasya māhātmyaṃ mayā vaktuṃ na śakyate .. 22 ..
The greatness of this sacred ford cannot be fully told by me. // 22
3.1.39.46
.. munaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The sages said:
3.1.39.47
raṃbhāṃ kimarthamaśapatkauśikaḥ sūtanaṃdana ..
Why did Kauśika curse Rambhā, O son of Sūta?
3.1.39.48
kathaṃ gatā śilābhūtā kapitīrthaṃ surāṃganā ..
How did the celestial damsel, turned into stone, go to Kapitīrtha?
3.1.39.49
etannaḥ sarvamācakṣva vistarānmunisattama .. 23 ..
Explain all of this to us in full detail, O best of sages! // 23
3.1.39.50
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The auspicious Sūta said:
3.1.39.51
viśvāmitrābhidho rājā prāgabhūtkuśikānvaye .. 24 ..
Long ago, in the lineage of Kuśika, there was a king named Viśvāmitra. // 24
3.1.39.52
sa kadācinmahārājaḥ senāparivṛto balī ..
Once that mighty monarch, surrounded by his army,
3.1.39.53
medinīṃ paricakrāma rājyavīkṣaṇakautukī .. .. 25 ..
traversed the earth, eager to inspect his kingdom. // 25
3.1.39.54
aṭitvā sa bahūndeśānvasiṣṭhasyāśramaṃ yayau ..
Having wandered through many lands, he went to the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha.
3.1.39.55
ātithyāya vṛtaḥ so'yaṃ vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā .. 26 ..
He was invited to receive hospitality by the great-souled Vasiṣṭha. // 26
3.1.39.56
tathāstvityabravītsoyaṃ daṃḍavatpraṇato nṛpaḥ ..
"So be it," said the king, bowing prostrate like a staff.
3.1.39.57
kāmadhenuprabhāvena viśvāmitrāya bhūbhuje .. 27 ..
By the power of the wish-fulfilling cow, to King Viśvāmitra // 27
3.1.39.58
ātithyamakarodviprā vasiṣṭho brahmanaṃdanaḥ ..
Vasiṣṭha, son of Brahmā, offered hospitality, O brahmins.
3.1.39.59
kāmadhenuprabhāvaṃ vai jñātvā kuśikanaṃdanaḥ .. .. 28 ..
Having realized the power of the wish-fulfilling cow, the descendant of Kuśika // 28
3.1.39.60
vasiṣṭhaṃ prārthayāmāsa kāmadhenumabhīṣṭadām ..
begged Vasiṣṭha for the wish-fulfilling cow that grants all desires.
3.1.39.61
pratyākhyāto vasiṣṭhena pracakarṣa ca tāṃ balāt .. 29 ..
Refused by Vasiṣṭha, he dragged her away by force. // 29
3.1.39.62
kāmadhenuvisṛṣṭaistu mlecchādyaiḥ sa parājitaḥ ..
Defeated by Mlecchas and others brought forth by the wish-fulfilling cow,
3.1.39.63
mahādevaṃ samārādhya tasmādastrāṇyavāpya ca .. 3.1.39.30 ..
he propitiated Mahādeva and obtained divine weapons from him. // 30
3.1.39.64
vasiṣṭhasyāśramaṃ gatvā vyasṛjaccharasaṃcayān ..
Having gone to Vasiṣṭha's hermitage, he unleashed showers of arrows;
3.1.39.65
sarvāṇyastrāṇi mumuce brahmāstraṃ ca nṛpottamaḥ .. 31 ..
the best of kings discharged all the divine weapons, including the Brahmā-weapon. // 31
3.1.39.66
tāni sarvāṇi cāstrāṇi vasiṣṭho brahmanaṃdanaḥ ..
All those weapons, Vasiṣṭha, son of Brahmā,
3.1.39.67
ekena brahmadaṃḍena nijaghna svatapobalāt .. 32 ..
struck down with a single staff of Brahmā, by the power of his own austerity. // 32
3.1.39.68
tataḥ parājito viprā viśvāmitro'tilajjitaḥ ..
Then, being defeated, O brahmins, Viśvāmitra was greatly ashamed;
3.1.39.69
brāhmaṇyāvāptaye svasya tapaḥ kartuṃ vanaṃ yayau .. 33 ..
to attain brahminhood for himself, he went to the forest to perform austerity. // 33
3.1.39.70
pūrvāsu paścimāṃtāsu triṣu dikṣu tapo'carat ..
He performed austerity in three directions, ending in the east and the west;
3.1.39.71
prādurbhūtamahā vighnastattaddikṣu sa kauśikaḥ .. 34 ..
in each of those directions, great obstacles arose for that Kauśika. // 34
3.1.39.72
uttarāṃ diśamāsādya himavatparvate'male
kauśikyāssaritastīre puṇye pāpavināśini .. 35 ..
Reaching the northern direction on the pure Himavat mountain, / on the sacred, sin-destroying bank of the river Kauśikī, // 35
3.1.39.73
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ tu nirāhāro jiteṃdriyaḥ ..
For a divine thousand years, without food, his senses mastered,
3.1.39.74
nirāloko jitaśvāso jitakrodhaḥ suniścalaḥ .. 36 ..
without looking about, his breath controlled, his anger overcome, completely motionless,
3.1.39.75
grīṣme paṃcāgnimadhyasthaḥ śiśire vāriṣu sthitaḥ ..
standing in the midst of five fires in summer, staying in the water during the cold season,
3.1.39.76
varṣāsvākāśago nityamūrdhvabāhurnirāśrayaḥ .. 37 ..
standing in the open air during the rains, his arms raised always, without any support,
3.1.39.77
brāhmaṇyasiddhaye'tyugraṃ cacāra sumahattapaḥ ..
he performed very severe, great tapas to attain the status of a brahmin.
3.1.39.78
udvignamanasastasya tridaśāstridivālayāḥ ..
Their minds agitated [because of] him, the thirty [gods] dwelling in heaven,
3.1.39.79
jaṃbhāriṇā ca sahitā raṃbhāṃ procuridaṃ vacaḥ .. 39 ..
along with the foe of Jambha, addressed this speech to Rambhā:
3.1.39.80
.. devā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gods said:
3.1.39.81
raṃbhe tvaṃ himavacchaile kauśikītīragaṃ munim .. 39 ..
“O Rambhā, to the sage on the mountain Himavat, on the bank of the Kauśikī,
3.1.39.82
viśvāmitraṃ tapasyaṃtaṃ vilobhaya viceṣṭitaiḥ ..
to Viśvāmitra practicing tapas, entice him with your gestures;
3.1.39.83
yathā tattapaso vighno bhaviṣyati tathā kuru .. 3.1.39.40 ..
act in such a way that there will be an obstacle to his tapas.”
3.1.39.84
evamuktā tadā raṃbhā devairiṃdrapurogamaiḥ ..
Thus addressed then by the gods headed by Indra,
3.1.39.85
pratyuvāca surānsarvānprāṃjaliḥ praṇatā tadā .. 41 ..
Rambhā then replied to all the gods with folded hands, bowing down.
3.1.39.86
.. raṃbhovāca .. ..
Rambhā said:
3.1.39.87
atikrūro mahākrodho viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ..
“The great sage Viśvāmitra is extremely fierce and greatly wrathful;
3.1.39.88
sa śapsyate māṃ krodhena bibhemyasmādahaṃ surāḥ .. 42 ..
he will curse me in anger. O gods, I am afraid of him.
3.1.39.89
trāyadhvaṃ kṛpayā yūyaṃ māṃ yuṣmatparicārikām ..
Out of compassion protect me, your servant!”
3.1.39.90
ityukto raṃbhayā tatra jaṃbhāristāma bhāṣata .. 43 ..
Thus addressed there by Rambhā, the foe of Jambha spoke to her:
3.1.39.91
.. indra uvāca .. ..
Indra said:
3.1.39.92
raṃbhe tvayā na bhīḥ kāryā viśvāmitrāttapodhanāt ..
“O Rambhā, you should have no fear of Viśvāmitra, whose wealth is tapas.
3.1.39.93
ahamapyāgamiṣyāmi tvatsahāyaḥ samanmathaḥ .. 44 ..
I too will come as your ally, accompanied by Manmatha.
3.1.39.94
kokilālāpamadhuro vasanto'pyāgamiṣyati ..
Spring, sweet with the calls of the cuckoo, will also arrive.
3.1.39.95
atisuṃdararūpā tvaṃ pralobhaya mahāmunim .. 45 ..
You of exceedingly beautiful form, entice the great sage!”
3.1.39.96
itīṃdrakathitā raṃbhā viśvāmitrāśramaṃ yayau ..
Thus told by Indra, Rambhā went to Viśvāmitra's hermitage.
3.1.39.97
taddṛṣṭigocarā sthitvā lalitaṃ rūpamāsthitā .. 46 ..
Standing within range of his sight, having assumed a charming form,
3.1.39.98
sā muniṃ lobhayāmāsa manoharaviceṣṭitaḥ ..
she enticed the sage with captivating gestures,
3.1.39.99
pikopi tasminsamaye cukūjānaṃdayanmanaḥ .. 47 ..
and at that moment a cuckoo also cooed, delighting the mind.
3.1.39.100
śrutvā pikasvaraṃ raṃbhāṃ dṛṣṭvā ca munipuṃgavaḥ ..
Hearing the voice of the cuckoo and seeing Rambhā, the eminent sage,
3.1.39.101
saṃśayāviṣṭahṛdayo viditvā śakrakarma tat ..
his heart seized with doubt, understood that it was the deed of Śakra.
3.1.39.102
śaśāpa raṃbhāṃ krodhena viśvāmitrastapodhanaḥ .. 48 .. ..
Viśvāmitra, whose wealth is tapas, cursed Rambhā in anger.
3.1.39.103
.. viśvāmitra uvāca .. ..
Viśvāmitra said:
3.1.39.104
yasmātkopayase raṃbhe māṃ tvaṃ kopajayaiṣiṇam .. 49 ..
“Because you provoke anger in me, O Rambhā, who wish to conquer anger,
3.1.39.105
śilā bhavātra tasmāttvaṃ raṃbhe varṣaśatāyutam ..
therefore, O Rambhā, become a stone here for ten thousand years.
3.1.39.106
tadaṃtare brāhmaṇena rakṣitā mokṣamāpsyasi .. 3.1.39.50 ..
At the end of that [time], protected by a brahmin, you will attain release.”
3.1.39.107
viśvāmitrasya śāpena tadaṃte sā śilā'bhavat ..
By the curse of Viśvāmitra, she instantly became a stone.
3.1.39.108
bahukālaṃ śilābhūtā tasthau tasyāśrame dvijāḥ .. 51 ..
Turned into a stone, O twice-born, she remained in his hermitage for a long time.
3.1.39.109
viśvāmitropi dharmātmā punastaptvā mahattapaḥ ..
Viśvāmitra too, of righteous soul, having performed great tapas once again,
3.1.39.110
lebhe vasiṣṭhavākyena brāhmaṇyaṃ durlabhaṃ nṛpaiḥ .. 52 ..
obtained, by the word of Vasiṣṭha, the brahminhood difficult for kings to attain.
3.1.39.111
bahukālaṃ śilābhūtā raṃbhāpyāsīttadāśrame ..
Turned into a stone, Rambhā also remained for a long time in that hermitage.
3.1.39.112
tasminnevāśrame puṇye śiṣyo'gastyasya saṃmataḥ .. 53 ..
In that very holy hermitage, the esteemed disciple of Agastya,
3.1.39.113
śvetonāma muniścakre mumukṣuḥ paramaṃ tapaḥ ..
a sage named Śveta, seeking liberation, performed supreme tapas.
3.1.39.114
cirakālaṃ tapastasminprakurvati mahāmunau ..54..
As that great sage was performing tapas for a long time,
3.1.39.115
aṃgāraketi vikhyātā rākṣasī kācidāgatā ..
a certain rākṣasī known as Aṅgārakā arrived
3.1.39.116
tasyāśramamatikrūrā meghasvanamahāsvanā .. 55 ..
at his hermitage, exceedingly cruel, roaring with a sound like clouds.
3.1.39.117
mūtraraktapurīṣādyairdūṣayāmāsa bhīṣaṇā ..
The terrifying creature polluted [the hermitage] with urine, blood, feces, and the like,
3.1.39.118
upadravaistathā cānyairbādhayāmāsa taṃ munim .. 56 ..
and afflicted that sage with other disturbances as well.
3.1.39.119
atha kruddho muniḥ śveto vāyavyāstreṇa yojayan ..
Then the enraged sage Śveta, employing the wind-weapon,
3.1.39.120
śaptāṃ kuśikaputreṇa rākṣasyai prākṣipacchilām .. 57 ..
hurled at the rākṣasī the stone cursed by the son of Kuśika.
3.1.39.121
rākṣasī sā pradudrāva vāyavyāstreṇa yojitā ..
Assailed by the wind-weapon, that rākṣasī fled away;
3.1.39.122
vāyavyāstraprayuktena dṛṣadānudrutā ca sā .. 58 ..
and pursued by the rock propelled by the wind-weapon,
3.1.39.123
dakṣiṇāṃbunidhestīraṃ dhāvati sma bhayārditā ..
she ran afflicted with fear to the shore of the southern ocean.
3.1.39.124
dhāvantīmanudhāvantī sā śilāstraprayojitā .. 59 ..
Pursuing her as she ran, that stone hurled by the weapon
3.1.39.125
papātopari rākṣasyā majjaṃtyāḥ kapitīrthake ..
fell upon the rākṣasī as she was plunging into Kapitīrtha.
3.1.39.126
mṛtā sā rākṣasī tatra śilāpātātsvamūrddhani .. .. 3.1.39.60 ..
The rākṣasī died there from the impact of the stone on her head.
3.1.39.127
viśvāmitreṇa śaptā sā kapitīrthe nimajjanāt ..
She who had been cursed by Viśvāmitra, through plunging into Kapitīrtha,
3.1.39.128
śilārūpaṃ parityajya raṃbhārūpamupeyuṣī .. 61 ..
cast off the form of a stone and returned to the form of Rambhā.
3.1.39.129
devaiḥ kusumadhārābhirabhivṛṣṭā manoramā ..
Showered with torrents of flowers by the gods, the charming woman,
3.1.39.130
divyaṃ vimānamārūḍhā divyāṃbaravirājitā .. 62 ..
mounting a celestial vimāna, resplendent in celestial garments,
3.1.39.131
hārakeyūrakaṭakanāsābharaṇabhūṣitā ..
adorned with necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and nose-ornaments,
3.1.39.132
urvaśyādyapsarobhiśca sakhibhiḥ parivāritā ..63..
was surrounded by her friends, apsarases headed by Urvaśī.
3.1.39.133
kapitīrthasya māhātmyaṃ praśaṃsantī punaḥpunaḥ ..
Praising the māhātmya of Kapitīrtha again and again,
3.1.39.134
niṣevya rāmanāthaṃ ca śaṃkaraṃ śaśibhūṣaṇam .. 64 ..
and having worshipped Rāmanātha, Śaṃkara, who is adorned with the moon,
3.1.39.135
ākhaṇḍalapurīṃ ramyāṃ prayayāvamarāvatīm ..
she went to Amarāvatī, the delightful city of Indra.
3.1.39.136
rākṣasī sāpi śāpena kumbhajasya mahaujasaḥ .. 65 ..
That rākṣasī too, through the curse of the mighty Agastya, born of a jar,
3.1.39.137
ghṛtācī devaveśyā hi rākṣasīrūpamāgatā ..
—for Ghṛtācī, the courtesan of the gods, had assumed the form of a rākṣasī—
3.1.39.138
sāpyatra kapitīrthāpsu snānātsvaṃ rūpamāyayau .. 66 ..
she too, by bathing here in the waters of Kapitīrtha, regained her own form.
3.1.39.139
evaṃ raṃbhāghṛtācyau te kapitīrthe nimajjanāt ..
Thus Rambhā and Ghṛtācī, by plunging into Kapitīrtha,
3.1.39.140
agastyaśiṣyaśvetasya prasādāddvijasattamāḥ .. 67 ..
through the grace of Śveta, the disciple of Agastya, O best of brahmins,
3.1.39.141
rākṣasītvaṃ śilātvaṃ ca hitvā svaṃ rūpamāgate ..
abandoned their states of being a rākṣasī and a rock, and attained their own form.
3.1.39.142
tasmātsarvaprayatnena snātavyaṃ kapitīrthake .. 68 ..
Therefore, one should bathe in Kapitīrtha with every effort.
3.1.39.143
yaḥ śṛṇotīmamadhyāyaṃ paṭhate vāpi mānavaḥ ..
Whatever person hears or reads this chapter,
3.1.39.144
prāpnoti kapitīrthasya snānajaṃ phalamuttamam .. 69 ..
obtains the excellent fruit born of bathing in Kapitīrtha.
