I shall tell of that cruel rākṣasa, O brahmins; listen with respect

Once, at that place, a mighty gandharva, the son of Viśvāvasu,
3.1.4.15
durddamonāma vipreṃdrā viṭagoṣṭhīparāyaṇaḥ ..
Named Durdama, O lords among brahmins, devoted to gatherings of profligates,
3.1.4.16
lalanāśatasaṃyukto vivastraḥ salilāśaye .. 7 ..
Surrounded by a hundred women, naked in a reservoir of water—
3.1.4.17
cikrīḍa sa vivastrābhiḥ sākaṃ yuvatibhirmudā ..
he sportively played with those unclothed young women with delight.
3.1.4.18
hālāsyanāthatīrthaṃ tadvasiṣṭho munibhiḥ saha .. 8 ..
To that sacred ford of the Lord of Hālāsya, Vasiṣṭha, along with other sages,
3.1.4.19

departed from the temple of Śaṃkara, intending to perform his midday rites.
3.1.4.20
tānṛṣīnavalokyātha rāmāstā bhayakātarāḥ .. 9 ..
Then, beholding those seers, those women, overcome with fear,
3.1.4.21
vāsāṃsyācchādayāmāsurdurddamo na tu sāhasī ..
covered themselves with garments; but the reckless Durdama did not.
3.1.4.22
tato vasiṣṭhaḥ kupitaḥ śaśāpainaṃ gata trapam .. 3.1.4.10 ..
Then Vasiṣṭha, enraged, cursed that shameless one:
3.1.4.23
.. vasiṣṭha uvāca .. ..
Vasiṣṭha said:
3.1.4.24
yasmāddurdama gaṃdharva dṛṣṭvāsmām̐llajjayā tvayā ..
"Because, O gandharva Durdama, upon seeing us, out of shame
3.1.4.25
vāso nācchāditaṃ śīghraṃ yāhi rākṣasatāṃ tataḥ .. 11 ..
you did not cover yourself with clothing, swiftly become a rākṣasa on that account!"
3.1.4.26
ityuktvā tā striyaḥ prāha vasiṣṭho munipuṃgavaḥ ..
Having said this, Vasiṣṭha, the foremost of sages, addressed those women:
3.1.4.27
yasmādācchāditaṃ vastraṃ dṛṣṭvāsmām̐llalanottamāḥ .. 12 ..
"Because you covered yourselves with garments upon seeing us, O excellent women,
3.1.4.28
tato na yuṣmāñchapiṣyāmi ganchadhvaṃ tridivaṃ tataḥ ..
therefore I shall not curse you. Go hence to heaven!"
3.1.4.29
evamuktā vasiṣṭhena rāmāḥ prāṃjalayastadā .. 13 ..
Thus addressed by Vasiṣṭha, the women then, with palms joined,
3.1.4.30
praṇipatya vasiṣṭhaṃ taṃ bhaktinamreṇa cetasā ..
bowed down to Vasiṣṭha with minds humbled by devotion,
3.1.4.31
munimaṃḍalamadhye taṃ vasiṣṭhamidamabruvan .. 14.. ..
and amidst the circle of sages spoke thus to Vasiṣṭha:
3.1.4.32
.. rāmā ūcuḥ .. ..
The women said:
3.1.4.33
bhagavansarvadharmajña caturānananaṃdana ..
"O venerable one, knower of all righteousness, son of the four-faced Brahmā,
3.1.4.34
dayāsiṃdho'valokyāsmānna kopaṃ kartumarhasi .. 15 ..
O ocean of compassion, looking upon us, you should not be angry.
3.1.4.35
patirevahi nārīṇāṃ bhūṣaṇaṃ paramucyate ..
A husband alone is declared to be the supreme ornament of women.
3.1.4.36
patihīnā tu yā nārī śataputrāpi sā mune ..16..
The woman who is bereft of her husband, O sage, even if she has a hundred sons,
3.1.4.37
vidhavetyucyate loke tatstrīṇāṃ maraṇaṃ smṛtam ..
is called a widow in the world; that is considered death for women.
3.1.4.38
tatprasādaṃ kuru mune patyāvasmāka mādarāt .. 17 ..
Therefore, O sage, show favour with regard to our husband, out of respect.
3.1.4.39
eko'parādhaḥ kṣaṃtavyo munibhistattvadarśibhiḥ ..
A single offense ought to be forgiven by sages who perceive the truth.
3.1.4.40
kṣamāṃ kuru dayāsiṃdho yuṣmacchiṣye'tra durdame .. 19 ..
Grant forgiveness, O ocean of compassion, to your disciple here, Durdama!"
3.1.4.41
vasiṣṭhaḥ prārthitastvaivaṃ durdama syāṃganājanaiḥ ..
Being thus besought by the women of Durdama,
3.1.4.42
provāca vacanaṃ bhūyaḥ prasannaḥ sa dvijottamāḥ .. 19 ..
Vasiṣṭha, pleased, spoke these words again, O best of brahmins:
3.1.4.43
na me syādvacanaṃ mithyā kadācidapi subhruvaḥ ..
"My word can never be false, O fair-browed ones.
3.1.4.44
upāyaṃ vaḥ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇudhvaṃ śraddhayā saha .. 3.1.4.20 ..
I shall tell you a remedy; listen with faith.
3.1.4.45
ṣoḍaśābdāvadhiḥ śāpo bharturvo bhavitā dhruvam ..
The curse of your husband will certainly have a duration of sixteen years.
3.1.4.46
ṣoḍaśābdāvadhau caiṣa durdamo rākṣasākṛtiḥ .. 21 ..
At the expiration of the sixteen years, this Durdama in the form of a rākṣasa
3.1.4.47
yadṛcchayācakra tīrthaṃ gamiṣyati surāṃganāḥ ..
will go by chance to Cakra tīrtha, O celestial damsels.
3.1.4.48
āste tatra mahāyogī gālavo viṣṇutatparaḥ ..22..
There resides the great yogin Gālava, devoted to Viṣṇu.
3.1.4.49
bhakṣyārthaṃ taṃ muniṃ so'yaṃ rākṣasobhigamiṣyati ..
This rākṣasa will approach that sage in order to devour him.
3.1.4.50
tato gālavarakṣārthaṃ preritaṃ cakramuttamam..23..
Then, to protect Gālava, the excellent discus dispatched
3.1.4.51
viṣṇunāsya śiro rāmā hariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ..
by Viṣṇu will sever his head, O women, without doubt.
3.1.4.52
tataḥ svarūpamāsādya śāpānmuktaḥ sudurdamaḥ ..24..
Then, regaining his true form, liberated from the curse, the noble Durdama,
3.1.4.53
patirvastridivaṃ bhūyo gaṃtāstyatra na saṃśayaḥ ..
your husband, will go again to heaven; there is no doubt about this.
3.1.4.54
tatastridivamāsādya durddamo'yaṃ patirhi vaḥ .. 25 ..
Then, having reached heaven, this Durdama, your husband,
3.1.4.55
ramayiṣyati sundaryo yuṣmānsundaraveṣabhṛt ..
bearing a handsome guise, will take his pleasure with you, O lovely ones."
3.1.4.56
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The auspicious Sūta said:
3.1.4.57
ityuktvā tu vasiṣṭhastā durdamasya varāṃganāḥ .. 26 ..
Having spoken thus to those excellent women of Durdama,
3.1.4.58
svāśramaṃ prayayau tūrṇaṃ hālāsyeśvarabhaktimān ..
Vasiṣṭha, devoted to the Lord of Hālāsya, swiftly departed to his own hermitage.
3.1.4.59
atha rāmāstamāliṃgya durddamaṃ patimāturāḥ .. 27 ..
Then the women, embracing their husband Durdama, distressed,
3.1.4.60
ruruduḥ śokasaṃvignā duḥkhasāgaramadhyagāḥ .. pra
paśyaṃtīṣu tāsveva durdamo rākṣaso'bhavat .. 28 ..
wept, agitated by sorrow and plunged into the midst of an ocean of grief. / Even as they were looking on, Durdama became a rākṣasa,
3.1.4.61
mahādaṃṣṭro mahākāyo raktaśmaśruśiroruhaḥ ..
with huge fangs, a massive body, and red beard and hair.
3.1.4.62
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhayasaṃvignā jagmū rāmāstriviṣṭapam .. 29 ..
Seeing him, the women, agitated by fear, departed for heaven.
3.1.4.63
tato rākṣasaveṣo'yaṃ durdamo bhairavākṛtiḥ ..
Then, in the guise of a rākṣasa, this Durdama of terrifying form,
3.1.4.64
bhakṣayanprāṇinaḥ sarvāndeśāddeśaṃ vanādvanam.. 3.1.4.30 ..
devouring all living creatures, from country to country, from forest to forest,
3.1.4.65
bhramanna nilavego'sau dharmatīrthaṃ tato yayau ..
wandering with the speed of the wind, then went to Dharma tīrtha.
3.1.4.66
evaṃ ṣoḍaśavarṣāṇi bhramato'sya yayustadā .. 31 ..
Thus sixteen years passed while he was wandering.
3.1.4.67
tatastu ṣoḍaśābdāṃte rākṣasoyaṃ munīśvarāḥ ..
Then, at the end of the sixteen years, O lords of sages, this rākṣasa,
3.1.4.68
bhakṣituṃ gālavamuniṃ dharmatīrthanivāsinam .. 32 ..
in order to devour the sage Gālava who resided at Dharma tīrtha,
3.1.4.69
upādravadvāyuvegaḥ sacāstauṣījjanārdanam ..
rushed forward with the speed of the wind; and he [Gālava] praised Janārdana.
3.1.4.70
gālavena stuto viṣṇustadā cakramacodayat .. 33 ..
Praised by Gālava, Viṣṇu then impelled his discus
3.1.4.71
rakṣituṃ gāla vamuniṃ rākṣasena prapīḍitam ..
to protect the sage Gālava who was oppressed by the rākṣasa.
3.1.4.72
athāgatya hareścakraṃ rākṣasasya śiro'harat .. 34 ..
Then, arriving, the discus of Hari severed the head of the rākṣasa.
3.1.4.73
tato'yaṃ rākṣasaṃ dehaṃ tyaktvā divyakalevaraḥ ..
Then, abandoning his rākṣasa body and endowed with a divine form,
3.1.4.74
vimānavaramāruhya durdamaḥ puṣpavarṣitaḥ .. 35 ..
mounting an excellent aerial chariot and showered with flowers, Durdama,
3.1.4.75
prāṃjaliḥ praṇato bhūtvā vavande taṃ sudarśanam ..
bowing down with joined palms, paid homage to Sudarśana
3.1.4.76
tuṣṭāva śrutiramyābhirvāgbhiragryābhirādarāt .. 36 ..
and praised it with foremost words pleasant to the ear, with reverence.
3.1.4.77
.. durdama uvāca ...
Durdama said:
3.1.4.78
sudarśana namaste'stu viṣṇuhastaikabhūṣaṇa ..
O Sudarśana, homage to you, sole ornament of Viṣṇu's hand!
3.1.4.79
namaste'surasaṃhartre sahasrādityatejase .. 37 ..
Homage to you, destroyer of asuras, radiant with the splendor of a thousand suns!
3.1.4.80
kṛpāleśena bhavatastyaktvāhaṃ rākṣasīṃ tanum ..
By a fraction of your grace, having abandoned this rākṣasa body,
3.1.4.81
svarūpamabhajaṃ viṣṇoścakrāyudha namo'stu te .. 38 ..
I have attained Viṣṇu's own form. O disc weapon, homage to you!
3.1.4.82
anujānīhi māṃ gantuṃ tridivaṃ viṣṇuvallabha ..
Permit me to go to heaven, O beloved of Viṣṇu;
3.1.4.83
bhāryā me pariśocaṃti virahāturacetasaḥ .. 39 ..
my wives are grieving, their hearts anguished by separation.
3.1.4.84
tvanmanasko bhaviṣyāmi yāvajjīvaṃ yathāhyaham ..
Indeed, so that my mind may remain fixed on you as long as I live,
3.1.4.85
tathā kṛpāṃ kuruṣva tvaṃ mayi cakra namo'stu te .. 3.1.4.40 ..
grant your grace unto me in that way. O disc, homage to you!
3.1.4.86
evaṃ stutaṃ viṣṇucakraṃ durdamena sabhaktikam ..
Thus praised with devotion by Durdama, Viṣṇu's disc,
3.1.4.87
anujagrāha sahasā tathāstviti munīśvarāḥ .. 41 ..
O best of sages, immediately granted him favor, saying: "So be it."
3.1.4.88
cakrāyudhābhyanujñāto durdamo gālavaṃ munim ..
Permitted by the disc weapon, Durdama bowed to the sage Gālava,
3.1.4.89
praṇamya tenānujñāto gandharvastridivaṃ yayau .. 42 ...
and, permitted by him, the gandharva went to heaven.
3.1.4.90
durdame tu gate svargaṃ gālavo munipuṃgavaḥ ..
When Durdama had gone to heaven, Gālava, the best of sages,
3.1.4.91
sa cakraṃ prārthayāmāsa viṣṇvāyudhamanuttamam .. 43 ..
prayed to the disc, the unexcelled weapon of Viṣṇu:
3.1.4.92
cakrāyudha namāmi tvāṃ mahāsuravimarddana ..
"O disc weapon, crusher of great asuras, I bow to you!
3.1.4.93
devīpaṭṭaṇa paryaṃte dharmatīrthe hyanuttame .. 44 ..
On the border of Devīpaṭṭana, in this unexcelled sacred ford of Dharma,
3.1.4.94
sannidhānaṃ kuruṣva tvaṃ sarvapāpavināśanam ..
manifest your presence, which destroys all sins.
3.1.4.95
tvatsannidhānātsarveṣāṃ snātānāṃ pāpināmiha .. 45 ..
Due to your presence here, for all sinners who bathe [in it],
3.1.4.96
pāpanāśaṃ kuruṣva tvaṃ mokṣaṃ ca kuru śāśvatam ..
destroy their sins, and bestow eternal liberation.
3.1.4.97
cakratīrthamiti khyātiṃ lokasya parikalpaya .. 46 ..
Ordain for the world its renown as Cakratīrtha.
3.1.4.98
tvatsannidhānādatratyamunīnāṃ bhayanāśanam ..
From your presence, let there be the destruction of fear for the sages here
3.1.4.99
itaḥ paraṃ bhavatvārya cakrāyudha namo'stu te .. 47 ..
from now on, O noble one. O disc weapon, homage to you!
3.1.4.100
bhūtapretapiśācebhyo bhayaṃ mā bhavatu prabho ..
Let there be no fear of bhūtas, pretas, and piśācas, O lord!"
3.1.4.101
iti saṃprārthitaṃ cakraṃ gālavena munīśvarāḥ .. 48 ..
Thus entreated by Gālava, O best of sages,
3.1.4.102
tathaivā stviti sambhāṣya tasmiṃstīrthe tirohitam ..
the disc said, "So be it," and vanished into that sacred ford.
3.1.4.103
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The venerable Sūta said:
3.1.4.104
evaṃ vaḥ kathito viprā rākṣasassa bhavo mayā .. 49 ..
Thus, O brahmins, the origin of that rākṣasa has been told to you by me,
3.1.4.105
māhātmyaṃ cakra tīrthasya kathitaṃ ca malāpaham..
and the māhātmya of Cakratīrtha, which removes impurity, has been narrated,
3.1.4.106
yacchrutvā sarvapāpebhyo mucyate mānavo bhuvi .. 3.1.4.50 ..
hearing which a mortal on earth is freed from all sins.
3.1.4.107
.. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The seers said:
3.1.4.108
vyāsaśiṣya mahāprājña sūta paurāṇikottama ..
O disciple of Vyāsa, O great sage, O Sūta, best of mythologists!
3.1.4.109
ārabhya darbhaśayanamādevīpattanāvadhi .. 51 ..
Beginning from Darbhaśayana up to the limit of Devīpattana,
3.1.4.110
bahuvyāyāmasaṃyuktaṃ cakratīrthamanuttamam ..
the unexcelled Cakratīrtha extends over a great expanse;
3.1.4.111
yayau vicchinnatāṃ madhye kathaṃ kathaya sāṃpratam .. .. 52 ..
tell us now how it became broken in the middle.
3.1.4.112
enaṃ manasi tiṣṭhantaṃ saṃśayaṃ chettumarhasi ..
You ought to dispel this doubt that resides in our minds.
3.1.4.113
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The venerable Sūta said:
3.1.4.114
purā hi parvatāḥ sarve jātapakṣā manojavāḥ .. 53 ..
In ancient times, indeed, all the mountains possessed wings and were swift as thought;
3.1.4.115
paryaṃtaparvatai sārddhaṃ cerurākāśamārgagāḥ ..
along with the surrounding hills they roved, traveling through the skyways.
3.1.4.116
nagareṣu ca rāṣṭreṣu grāmeṣu ca vaneṣu ca .. 54 ..
In cities, in realms, in villages, and in forests,
3.1.4.117
āplutyāplutya tiṣṭhaṃti parvatāḥ sarvato bhuvi ..
the mountains continually leaped down and rested everywhere on the earth.
3.1.4.118
ākramyākramya tiṣṭhaṃti yatrayatra mahīdharāḥ .. 55 ..
Wherever the mountains swooped down and came to rest,
3.1.4.119
tatratatra narā gāvastathānye prāṇisaṃcayāḥ ..
there men, cattle, and likewise hosts of other living beings
3.1.4.120
maraṇaṃ sahasā prāpuḥ pīḍyamānā mahīdharaiḥ .. 56 ..
instantly met death, being crushed by the mountains.
3.1.4.121
brāhmaṇādiṣu varṇeṣu naṣṭeṣu samanantaram ..
When the classes of people, beginning with the brahmins, were destroyed straightway,
3.1.4.122
yajñādyabhāvātsahasā devatā vyasanaṃ yayuḥ .. 57 ..
the gods quickly fell into distress due to the absence of sacrifices and other rites.
3.1.4.123
tata indro mahākruddho vajramādāya vegavān ..
Then Indra, intensely enraged, seized the thunderbolt and, moving swiftly,
3.1.4.124
ciccheda sahasā pakṣānparvatānāṃ tarasvinām .. 58 ..
suddenly cut off the wings of the powerful mountains.
3.1.4.125
chidyamānacchadāḥ sarve vāsavena mahīdharāḥ ..
All the mountains, their wings being cut off by Indra,
3.1.4.126
ananyaśaraṇā bhūtvā samudraṃ prāviśanbhayāt .. 59 ..
having no other refuge, plunged into the ocean out of fear.
3.1.4.127
acaleṣu ca sarveṣu patatsu lavaṇārṇave ..
And while all the mountains were falling into the salt ocean,
3.1.4.128
nipeturarṇavabhrāṃtyā cakratīrthepi kecana .. 3.1.4.60 ..
some fell into Cakratīrtha as well, mistaking it for the ocean.
3.1.4.129
patitaiḥ parvataistaistu madhyataḥ pūritodaram ..
Its interior filled in the middle by those various fallen mountains,
3.1.4.130
cakratīrthaṃ mahāpuṇyaṃ madhye vicchedamāyayau .. 61 ..
the greatly sacred Cakratīrtha suffered a breach in its middle.
3.1.4.131
yadṛcchayā mahāśailāḥ pārśvayostatra nāpatan ..
By chance, the great mountains did not fall on the two sides there;
3.1.4.132
ato vai darbhaśayane tathā devīpure'pi ca .. 62 ..
therefore, indeed, at Darbhaśayana and likewise at Devīpura,
3.1.4.133
vicchinnamadhyaṃ taddvedhā vibhaktamiva dṛśyate ..
it appears broken in the middle, as if divided in two,
3.1.4.134
madhyataḥ patitaiḥ śailaiścakratīrthaṃ sthalīkṛtam ..63..
for Cakratīrtha was turned into dry ground by the mountains falling in its middle.
3.1.4.135
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The venerable Sūta said:
3.1.4.136
yuṣmākamevaṃ kathitaṃ munīndrā yanmadhyatastīrthamidaṃ sthalī kṛtam ..
Thus it has been related to you, O chief sages, how this sacred ford was made into dry land in the middle.
3.1.4.137
yathā mahīdhrāḥ sahasā biḍaujasā vicchinnapakṣā iha peturunnatāḥ .. 64 .. ..
just as once the towering mountains suddenly fell here, their wings severed by Indra. (64)
3.1.4.138
iti śrīskāṃdemahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye durdamagaṃdharvaśāpamocanaṃnāma caturtho'dhyāyaḥ .. 4 ..
Thus ends the fourth chapter, titled “Liberation from the Curse of the Gandharva Durdama,” in the Setumāhātmya of the third [part], the Brahmakhaṇḍa, in the Skandapurāṇa comprising eighty-one thousand verses. (4)
