> 25. Now begins the description of the māhātmya of Śaṅkhatīrtha: The renown of that tīrtha as Śaṅkhatīrtha, because it was prepared by the sage Śaṅkha after performing austerity; in connection with the māhātmya of that tīrtha, the account of the vipra named Vatsanābha; when an anthill grew over the twice-born named Vatsanābha as he remained motionless there to perform austerity, and an affliction was caused by Vāsava through a downpour of rain to disrupt his austerity, the protection of the sage by the venerable lord Dharmadeva, who assumed the form of a great buffalo, stood upon the anthill, and received the torrents of rain upon his own back; then, having ceased from his meditative absorption of austerity, Vatsanābha, because he had failed to worship his protector Dharmadeva who stood near him in the form of a buffalo, determined that this was an unsteadiness of mind regarding his absorption, and, in order to abandon his life to remove his sin of ingratitude, made an effort to leap from a precipice of Mount Meru; then Dharmadeva, relinquishing the form of a buffalo and manifesting in his own form, restrained the twice-born Vatsanābha from his attempt at death, and instructed him to bathe in Śaṅkhatīrtha on the shore of the southern ocean for the purification of his mind, accompanied by the removal of the sin of ingratitude; by the instruction of Dharma, the twice-born Vatsanābha's attainment of becoming one with Brahman preceded by the purification of his mind immediately upon bathing in Śaṅkhatīrtha, after the removal of his sin of ingratitude; the māhātmya of Śaṅkhatīrtha.
