a great splendor issued forth, and likewise from that of Śambhu and the Creator [Brahmā].
3.1.6.71
apareṣāṃ surāṇāṃ ca dehādiṃdraśarīrataḥ ..
And from the bodies of the other gods, and from the body of Indra,
3.1.6.72
tejaḥ samudabhūtkrūraṃ tadekaṃ samajāyata .. 34 ..
a fierce splendor arose; and that [splendor] became one.

Śiva's splendor became her face, and Viṣṇu's splendor her two arms, O twice-born;
3.1.6.77
brahmatejastu caraṇau madhyamaiṃdreṇa tejasā ..
Brahmā's splendor was her two feet, her waist came from the splendor of Indra,
3.1.6.78
yamasya tejasā keśāḥ kucau caṃdrasya tejasā .. 37 ..
her hair from Yama's splendor, and her two breasts from the splendor of the Moon;

3.1.6.86
itareṣāṃ ca devānāṃ tejobhiratidāruṇaiḥ .. 41 ..
and by the most terrible splendors of the other gods
3.1.6.87
kṛtānyāvayavā nārī durgā paramabhāsvarā ..
the other limbs were made: the woman Durgā, supremely radiant,
3.1.6.88
babhūva durdharṣatarā sarvairapi surāsuraiḥ .. 42 ..
became utterly unconquerable by all gods and asuras alike.
3.1.6.89
sarvavṛṃdārakānīkatejaḥsaṃghasamudbhavā ..
Born from the mass of splendor of the hosts of all the gods,
3.1.6.90
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā prītimāpuste devā mahiṣabādhitāḥ .. 43 ..
the gods, tormented by Mahiṣa, felt joy upon seeing her.
3.1.6.91
tato rudrā dayo devā viniṣkṛṣyāyudhānnijāt ..
Then the gods, Rudra and the rest, drawing forth weapons from their own [bodies],
3.1.6.92
āyudhāni dadustasyai śūlādīni dvijottamāḥ .. 44 ..
gave her weapons such as the trident and others, O best of the twice-born.

bhūṣaṇāni dadustasyai vastramālyāni caṃdanam ..
They gave her ornaments, garments, garlands, and sandalwood paste;
3.1.6.94
sāpi devī tadā vastrairbhūṣaṇaiścaṃdanādibhiḥ .. 45 ..
and then she, the Goddess, adorned with garments, ornaments, sandalwood and the like,
3.1.6.95
kusumairāyudhairhārairbhūṣitā paricārakaiḥ ..
with flowers, weapons, and necklaces by her attendants,
3.1.6.96
sāṭṭahāsaṃ pramuṃcaṃtī bhairavī bhairavasvanā .. 46 ..
releasing loud, mocking laughter, the terrifying one (Bhairavī) of terrible roar,
3.1.6.97

mounted upon a lion as her mount, with cries of 'Victory!'

Mahiṣa too, out of great anger, lifting up a mighty weapon,
3.1.6.104
taṃ śabdamavalakṣyātha yayāvasurasaṃvṛtaḥ .. 3.1.6.50 ..
directed himself toward that sound and set out, surrounded by asuras.

vyalokayattato devīṃ tejovyāptajagattrayīm ..
Then he beheld the Goddess pervading the three worlds with her splendor,
3.1.6.106
sāyudhānaṃtabāhvāḍhayāṃ nādakaṃpitabhūtalām .. 51 ..
endowed with endless armed hands, shaking the surface of the earth with her roar,
3.1.6.107
kṣobhitāśeṣaśeṣādimahānāgaparaṃparām ..
agitating the entire succession of great serpents beginning with Śeṣa.

indeed, there was no counting the army of each one of them.
3.1.6.115
te sarve yugapaddevīṃ śastrairāvavrurojasā ..
They all simultaneously enveloped the Goddess with weapons by their might.
3.1.6.116
sāpi devī tato bhīmā daityamuktāstrasaṃcayam .. 56 ..
She too, the terrible Goddess, then effortlessly shattered with arrows
3.1.6.117
bibheda līlayā bāṇaiḥ svakārmukaviniḥsṛtaiḥ ..
discharged from her own bow the multitude of missiles released by the daityas;

fought in the battle against the daitya troop-commanders with weapons, missiles, and other arms.
3.1.6.121
tato devā balotsiktā devīśaktyupabṛṃhitāḥ ..
Then the gods, intoxicated with power and reinforced by the Goddess's energy,
3.1.6.122
niḥśeṣamasurānsarvānāyu dhairniramūlayan .. 59 ..
completely uprooted all the asuras with their weapons.
3.1.6.123

When his own army was destroyed, Mahiṣāsura, deeply agitated,
3.1.6.124
cāpamādāya vegena vikṛṣya ca mahāsvanam .. 3.1.6.60 ..
swiftly took up his bow, drew it with a loud twang,
3.1.6.125
saṃdhāya mumuce bāṇāndeva sainyeṣu bhūsurāḥ ..
fitted his arrows, and discharged them against the army of the gods, O earth-gods:
3.1.6.126

that foremost of the strong, discharged ten thousand arrows each.
3.1.6.131

Then the gods fled, crushed by the asura Mahiṣa;
3.1.6.132
devīṃ śaraṇamājagmustrāhitrāhītivādinaḥ .. 64 ..
they went for refuge to the Goddess, crying, “Save us! Save us!”
3.1.6.133
tato devī gaṇānsvasya bhūtavetālakādikān ..
Then the Goddess commanded her own gaṇas, bhūtas, vetālas, and the rest:
3.1.6.134
yūyaṃ nāśayata kṣipramāsuraṃ balamityaśāt ... .. 65 ..
“Destroy swiftly the army of the asuras!
