"Boast for a moment, fool, while I drink wine!
3.1.7.59
nivṛttamadhupānāhaṃ tvāṃ nayiṣye yamakṣayam.. ..28..
When my drinking of wine is done, I will send you to the abode of Yama.
3.1.7.60
hate tvayi durādharṣe mayā daivatakaṃṭake..
When you, hard to overcome, a thorn in the side of the gods, are slain by me,
3.1.7.61
svaṃsvaṃ sthānaṃ prapadyaṃtāṃ siddhā sādhyā marudgaṇāḥ..29..
let the Siddhas, Sādhyas, and hosts of Maruts return to their respective realms!"
3.1.7.62
uktvaivaṃ tāḍayāmāsa muṣṭinā mahiṣāsuram..
Having spoken thus, she struck Mahiṣāsura with her fist.
3.1.7.63
tāḍito'yaṃ tato devyā mahiṣo bhṛśavihvalaḥ..3.1.7.3...
Struck then by the goddess, Mahiṣa, exceedingly distraught,
3.1.7.64
dakṣiṇasyodadhestīrepradudrāva tvarānvitaḥ..
fled in haste to the shore of the southern ocean.
3.1.7.65
anududrāva taṃ devī siṃhamāruhya vāhanam..31..
The goddess pursued him, mounting her vehicle, the lion.
3.1.7.66
anudrutastato devyā mahiṣo dānaveśvaraḥ..
Pursued then by the goddess, Mahiṣa, the lord of the Dānavas,
3.1.7.67
dharmapuṣkīraṇītoye daśayojanamāyate..32..
into the water of the Dharmapuṣkariṇī, ten yojanas in extent,
3.1.7.68
praviśyāṃtarhitastasthau durgātāḍanavihvalaḥ..
entered and remained hidden, distraught from Durgā's blow.
3.1.7.69
tato durgā samāsādya dharmapuṣkariṇītaṭam .. ..33..
Then, having reached the bank of the Dharmapuṣkariṇī,
3.1.7.70
nadadarśāsuraṃ tatra mahiṣaṃ caṃḍikā tadā ..
Caṇḍikā did not see the demon Mahiṣa there at that time.
3.1.7.71
aśarīrā tato vāṇī durgā devīmabhāṣata..34..
Then a bodiless voice addressed the goddess Durgā:
3.1.7.72
bhadrakāli mahādevi mahiṣo dānavastvayā ..
"O Bhadrakālī! O great goddess! The demon Mahiṣa,
3.1.7.73
tāḍito muṣṭinā bhadre dharmapuṣkariṇījale ..35..
struck with your fist, O auspicious one, [lies] in the water of the Dharmapuṣkariṇī.
3.1.7.74
asminnaṃtarhitaḥ śete bhayārto mārayasva tam ..
He lies hidden in this [water], afflicted with fear; kill him!
3.1.7.75
yenakenāpyupāyena cainaṃ prāṇairviyojaya ..36..
By any means whatever, deprive him of life!"
3.1.7.76
evaṃ vācā'śarī riṇyā kathitā caṃḍikā tadā ..
Addressed thus by the bodiless voice at that time, Caṇḍikā,
3.1.7.77
prāha svavāhanaṃ siṃhamasureṃdravadhodyatā ..37..
intent on slaying the lord of demons, spoke to her vehicle, the lion:
3.1.7.78
mṛgeṃdra siṃhavikrāṃta mahāvalaparākrama ..
"O king of beasts, courageous as a lion, endowed with great strength and valor!
3.1.7.79
dharmapuṣkīraṇītoyaṃ niḥśeṣaṃ pīya tāṃ tvayā .. 38 ..
Let the water of the Dharmapuṣkariṇī be drunk completely by you!"
3.1.7.80
devyaivamuktaḥ paṃcāsyo dharmapuṣkariṇījalam ..
Thus addressed by the goddess, the five-faced one [the lion], O brahmins,
3.1.7.81
niḥśeṣaṃ ca papau viprā yathā pāṃsurbhavettathā .. 39 ..
drank up the water of the Dharmapuṣkariṇī completely, so that it turned to dust.
3.1.7.82
niragānmahiṣo dīnastatastasmā jjalāśayāt ..
Mahiṣa, miserable, then came out of that body of water.
3.1.7.83
āyāṃtamasuraṃ devī pādenākramya mūrddhani .. 3.1.7.40 ..
Assailing the advancing demon on his head with her foot,
3.1.7.84
kaṃṭhaṃ śūlena tīkṣṇena pīḍayāmāsa kopitā ..
the goddess, infuriated, pierced his throat with her sharp trident.
3.1.7.85
tato devyasimādāya cakartāsya śiro mahat .. 41 ..
Then, taking up a sword, the goddess severed his great head.
3.1.7.86
evaṃ sa mahiṣo viprāḥ sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ ..
Thus, O brahmins, that Mahiṣa, along with his servants, army, and mounts,
3.1.7.87
durgayā nihato bhūmau papāta ca mamāra ca .. 42 ..
slain by Durgā, fell to the ground and died.
3.1.7.88
tato devāḥ sagaṃdharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ..
Then the gods, along with the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and supreme seers,
3.1.7.89
stutvā devīṃ tataḥ stotraistuṣṭā jahṛṣire tadā .. 43 ..
having praised the goddess with hymns of praise, were pleased and rejoiced then.
3.1.7.90
anujñātāstato devyā devā jagmuryathāgatam ..
Permitted by the goddess, the gods then departed as they had come.
3.1.7.91
tato devī jaganmātā sva nāmnā puramuttamam .. 44 ..
Then the goddess, the Mother of the World, after her own name, an excellent city
3.1.7.92
dakṣiṇasya samudrasya tīre cakre tadottare ..
founded on the northern shore of the southern ocean.
3.1.7.93
tato devyanuśiṣṭāste devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ .. 45 ..
Then, instructed by the goddess, the gods led by Śakra
3.1.7.94
pūrayāmāsuramṛtairdharmapuṣka riṇīṃ tadā ..
filled the Dharmapuṣkariṇī with nectars.
3.1.7.95
tato hyamṛtatīrthākhyāṃ lebhe tattīrthamuttamam .. 46 ..
Then indeed that excellent sacred ford obtained the name Amṛtatīrtha.
3.1.7.96
tato devī varamadātsvapurasya mudānvitā ..
Then, filled with joy, the goddess granted a boon to her city:
3.1.7.97
paśavyaṃ cāparogaṃ ca purametadbhavatviti .. 47 ..
“May this city be wholesome for cattle and free from disease!”
3.1.7.98
dadau tīrthāya ca varaṃ snātānāmatra vai nṛṇām ..
And she gave a boon to the sacred ford: “For men who bathe here,
3.1.7.99
yathābhilāṣaṃ siddhiḥ syādityuktvā sā divaṃ yayau .. 49 ..
may there be accomplishment according to their desire!” Having spoken thus, she went to heaven.
3.1.7.100
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
3.1.7.101
yatsvanāmnā cakāredaṃ devī puramanuttamam ..
Because the goddess founded this matchless city in her own name,
3.1.7.102
devīpattanamityuktaṃ tena devyāḥ purottamam .. 49 ..
therefore this excellent city of the goddess is called Devīpattana.
3.1.7.103
devīpattanamārabhya sumuhūrte dine dvijāḥ ..
Starting from Devīpattana on an auspicious day at a favorable hour, O brahmins,
3.1.7.104
vighneśvaraṃ praṇamyādau salilasvāminaṃ tathā .. 3.1.7.50 ..
having first bowed to Vighneśvara and likewise to the Lord of the Waters,
3.1.7.105
mahādevābhyanujñāto rāmacaṃdro'tidhārmikaḥ ..
permitted by Mahādeva, the exceedingly righteous Rāmacandra,
3.1.7.106
sthāpayitvā svahastena pāṣāṇanavakaṃ mudā.. 51 ..
joyfully establishing the nine stones with his own hand,
3.1.7.107
setumārabdhavānviprā yāvallaṃkāmataṃdritaḥ ..
began the bridge as far as Laṅkā, unwearied, O brahmins.
3.1.7.108
siṃhāsanaṃ samāruhya rāmo nalakṛtaṃ śubham.. 52 ..
Ascending the auspicious throne made by Nala, Rāma
3.1.7.109
vānaraiḥ kārayāmāsa setumabdhau nalādibhiḥ ..
caused the bridge to be built in the ocean by the monkeys led by Nala.
3.1.7.110
parvatāñchākhinovṛkṣāndṛṣadaḥ kāṣṭhasaṃcayān .. 53 ..
Mountains, branching trees, boulders, piles of timber,
3.1.7.111
tṛṇāni ca samājahrurvānarā vanamadhyataḥ .. 54 ..
and grasses the monkeys fetched from within the forest.
3.1.7.112
nalastāni samādāya cakre setuṃ mahodadhau ..
Taking them, Nala built the bridge across the great ocean.
3.1.7.113
paṃcabhirdivasaiḥ seturyāvallaṃkāsamīpataḥ .. 55 ..
In five days, reaching to the vicinity of Laṅkā,
3.1.7.114
daśayojanavistīrṇaśśatayojanamāyataḥ ..
ten yojanas broad and a hundred yojanas long,
3.1.7.115
kṛtaḥ seturnalenābdhau puṇyaḥ pāpavināśanaḥ .. 56 ..
the bridge was built in the ocean by Nala, holy and destroying sin.
3.1.7.116
devīpurasya nikaṭe navapāṣāṇarūpake ..
Near Devīpura, at the form of the nine stones,
3.1.7.117
setumūle naraḥ snāyātsvapāpapariśuddhaye .. 57 ..
at the base of the bridge a man should bathe for the purification of his sins.
3.1.7.118
cakratīrthe tathā snāyādbhajetsetvadhipaṃ harim..
He should likewise bathe at Cakratīrtha and revere Hari, the Lord of the Bridge.
3.1.7.119
devīpattanamārabhya yatkṛtaṃ setubaṃdhanam .. 58 ..
The construction of the bridge that was made beginning from Devīpattana,
3.1.7.120
tatsetumūlaṃ vipreṃdrā yathārthaṃ parikalpitam ..
that, O chiefs of brahmins, is considered to be truly the base of the bridge.
3.1.7.121
setostu paścimā koṭirdarbhaśayyā prakīrtitā .. 59 ..
The western point of the bridge is celebrated as Darbhaśayyā,
3.1.7.122
devīpurī ca prākkoṭirubhayaṃ setumūlakam ..
and Devīpurī is the eastern point; both are the base of the bridge.
3.1.7.123
ubhayaṃ puṇyamākhyātaṃ pavitraṃ pāpanāśanam .. 3.1.7.60 ..
Both are declared meritorious, purifying, and destroying sin.
3.1.7.124
yatsetumūlaṃ gacchaṃti yena mārgeṇa vai narāḥ..
By whichever path men go to that base of the bridge,
3.1.7.125
tattanmārgagatāste te tasmiṃstasminvimuktide .. 61 ..
those who have taken each respective path reach that [place] that grants liberation.
3.1.7.126
snātvādau setumūle tu cakratīrthe tathaiva ca ..
Having first bathed at the base of the bridge and likewise at Cakratīrtha,
3.1.7.127
saṃkalpapūrvakaṃ paścādgaccheyuḥ setubaṃdhanam.. 62 ..
they should subsequently go to the Setubandha with solemn resolve.
3.1.7.128
devīpure tathā darbhaśayyāyāmapi bhūsurāḥ ..
In Devīpura as well as at Darbhaśayyā, O earthly gods,
3.1.7.129
cakratīrthe śive snānaṃ puṇyapāpavināśanam ..63..
bathing in the auspicious Cakratīrtha destroys merits and sins.
3.1.7.130
smaraṇādubhayatrāpi cakratīrthasya vai dvijāḥ ..
Just by remembrance of Cakratīrtha in both places, O brahmins,
3.1.7.131
bhasmībhavaṃti pāpāni lakṣajanmakṛtānyapi .. 64 ..
even sins accumulated over a hundred thousand births turn to ashes.
3.1.7.132
janmāpi vilayaṃ yāyānmuktiścāpi kare sthitā ..
Birth itself is dissolved, and liberation stands in the palm of the hand.
3.1.7.133
cakratīrthasamaṃ tīrthaṃ na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati .. 65 ..
There is no sacred ford equal to Cakratīrtha, nor will there ever be.
3.1.7.134
bhūloke yāni tīrthāni gaṃgādīni dvijottamāḥ ..
Whatever sacred fords there are on earth, beginning with the Gaṅgā, O best of brahmins,
3.1.7.135
cakratīrthasya tānyaddhā kalāṃ nārhaṃti ṣoḍaśīm .. 66 ..
truly do not equal a sixteenth part of Cakratīrtha.
3.1.7.136
ādau tu navapāṣāṇamadhye'bdhau snānamācaret ..
First, one should bathe in the ocean in the midst of the nine stones;
3.1.7.137
kṣetrapiṃḍe tataḥ kuryāccakratīrthe tathaiva ca .. 67 ..
then one should offer the kṣetrapiṇḍa, and likewise at Cakratīrtha.
3.1.7.138
setunāthaṃ hariṃ sevetsvapāpapariśuddhaye ..
One should serve Hari, the Lord of the Bridge, for the purification of one's sins.
3.1.7.139
evaṃ hi darbhaśayyāyāṃ kuryustanmārgato gatāḥ .. 68 ..
Thus should those who have gone by that path do at Darbhaśayyā.
3.1.7.140
ārūḍhaṃ rāmacaṃdreṇa yo namaskurute janaḥ ..
The person who bows to the throne made by Nala,
3.1.7.141
siṃhāsanaṃ nalakṛtaṃ na tasya narakādbhayam.. 69 ..
mounted by Rāmacandra, has no fear of hell.
3.1.7.142
setumādau namaskuryādrāmaṃ dhyāyanhṛdā tadā ..
One should first bow down to the bridge, contemplating Rāma in the heart at that time:
3.1.7.143
raghuvīrapadanyāsa pavitrīkṛtapāṃsave .. 3.1.7.70 ..
“To the one whose dust is purified by the stepping of the hero of the Raghu race,
3.1.7.144
daśakaṃṭhaśiraśchedahetave setave namaḥ ..
to the cause of the severing of the Ten-necked one's heads, to the bridge, homage!
3.1.7.145
ketave rāmacaṃdrasya mokṣamārgaikahetave .. 71 ..
To the banner of Rāmacandra, to the sole cause of the path of liberation,
3.1.7.146
sītāyā mānasāṃbhojabhānave setave namaḥ .. ..
to the sun for the lotus of Sītā’s mind, to the bridge, homage!”
3.1.7.147
sāṣṭāṃgaṃ praṇipatyādau maṃtreṇānena vai dvijāḥ .. 72 ..
Having first bowed down with all eight limbs using this mantra, O brahmins,
3.1.7.148
tato vetālavaradaṃ tīrthaṃ gacchenmahābalam ..
one should then go to the sacred ford Vetālavarada of great power.
3.1.7.149
tatra snānādavāpnoti siddhiṃ pārāmikāṃ naraḥ .. 73 ..
From bathing there, a man attains supreme perfection.
3.1.7.150
yo'dhyāyamenaṃ paṭhate manuṣyaḥ śṛṇoti vā bhaktiyuto dvijeṃdrāḥ ..
The human being who recites this chapter or hears it endowed with devotion, O chiefs of brahmins,
3.1.7.151
svargādayastasya na durlabhāḥ syuḥ kaivalyamapyasya karasthameva .. 74 ..
Heaven and other [realms] are not difficult for him to attain, and even absolute liberation is right in his hand. // 74
