the elder young Vidyādhara named Sudarśana, // 15
3.1.8.33
harṣasaṃphullanayanaścakame kāmamohitaḥ ..
his eyes wide open with joy, was bewildered by passion and desired her.
3.1.8.34
pūrṇacandrānanāṃ tāṃ vai vīkṣamāṇo muhurmuhuḥ .. 16 ..
Gazing repeatedly at her whose face was like the full moon, // 16

Sudarśana said:
3.1.8.38
kāsi bhadre sutā kasya rūpayauvanaśālinī ..
Who are you, fair one? Whose daughter are you, endowed with beauty and youth?
3.1.8.39
rūpamapratimaṃ hyetadāhlādayati me manaḥ .. 18 ..
For this peerless beauty delights my mind. // 18
3.1.8.40
tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā ratisaṃkāśāṃ bādhate māṃ manobhavaḥ ..
Seeing you resemble Rati, love torments me.

sukaṇṭhanāmadheyasya vidyādharapateraham .. 19 ..
I am the son of the lord of the Vidyādharas named Sukaṇṭha, // 19

ātmajo rūpasaṃpanno nāmnā caiva sudarśanaḥ ..
endowed with beauty, and named Sudarśana.

pratigṛhṇīṣva māṃ bhadre rakṣa māṃ karuṇādṛśā .. 3.1.8.20 ..
Accept me, fair one, and protect me with a compassionate glance. // 20
3.1.8.44
bhartāraṃ māṃ samāsādya sarvānbhogānavāpsyasi ..
Having attained me as your husband, you will obtain all pleasures.
3.1.8.45
ityākarṇya vacastasya vidyādharasutasya sā .. 21 ..
Having heard those words of the son of the Vidyādhara, // 21
3.1.8.46
tadā kāṃtimatī vākyaṃ dharmayuktamabhāṣata ..
Kāntimatī then spoke words accordant with righteousness:
3.1.8.47
sudarśana mahābhāga vidyādharapateḥ suta ..22 ..
O fortunate Sudarśana, son of the lord of the Vidyādharas! // 22
3.1.8.48
ātmajāṃ māṃ vijānīhi gālavasya mahātmanaḥ ..
Know me to be the daughter of the high-souled Gālava.
3.1.8.49
kanyā cāhamanūḍhāsmi pitṛśu śrūṣaṇe ratā .. 23 ..
And I am an unmarried girl devoted to the service of my father. // 23
3.1.8.50
balyarthaṃ hi pituścāhaṃ puṣpāṇyāhartumāgatā ..
I came to gather flowers for my father's offering,
3.1.8.51
āharaṃtyāśca puṣpāṇi yāma eko nyavartata .. 24 ..
and while I was gathering the flowers, a watch of the day has elapsed. // 24
3.1.8.52
madvilaṃbena sa munirdeva tārcanatatparaḥ ..
Because of my delay, that sage, intent on worshipping the deities,
3.1.8.53
kopaṃ vidhāsyate nūnaṃ tapasvī munipuṃgavaḥ .. 25 ..
that ascetic, best among sages, will surely become angry. // 25
3.1.8.54
tacchīghramadya gacchāmi puṣpāṇyapyāhṛtāni me ..
Therefore, I must go quickly now; the flowers have also been gathered by me.
3.1.8.55
kanyāśca piturādhīnā na svatantrāḥ kadācana ..26..
Maidens are dependent on their father and never independent. // 26
3.1.8.56
yadi māmicchati bhavānpitaraṃ mama yācaya ..
If you desire me, ask my father.
3.1.8.57
iti vidyādharasutamuktvā kāṃtimatī tadā .. 27 ..
Having spoken thus to the son of the Vidyādhara at that time, // 27
3.1.8.58
piturāśaṃkitā tūrṇamā śramaṃ gantumudyatā ..
Kāntimatī, apprehensive about her father, prepared to go quickly to the hermitage.
3.1.8.59
gacchantīṃ tāṃ samālokya vidyādharakumārakaḥ .. 28 ..
Seeing her walking away, the young Vidyādhara,
3.1.8.60
tūrṇaṃ jagrāha keśeṣu dhāvitvā madanārditaḥ ..
afflicted by desire, ran quickly and seized her by the hair.
3.1.8.61
abhyetya nijakeśeṣu gṛhṇante taṃ vilokya sā .. 29 ..
Seeing him approaching and seizing her hair,
3.1.8.62
uccaiścakraṃda sahasā kurarīva muneḥ sutā ..
the sage's daughter suddenly cried aloud like an osprey:
3.1.8.63
asmādvidyādharasutājjanaka trāhi māṃ vibho .. 3.1.8.30 ..
"Save me, father, O lord, from this son of a Vidyādhara!
3.1.8.64
balādgṛhṇāti duṣṭātmā vidyādharasuto'dya mām ..
Today the wicked-minded son of a Vidyādhara is seizing me by force!"
3.1.8.65
itthamuccaiḥ pracukrośa svāśramānnātidūrataḥ .. 31 ..
Thus she cried out loudly, not very far from their hermitage.
3.1.8.66
tadākraṃditamākarṇya gandhamādanavāsinaḥ ..
Hearing that cry, the dwellers of Gandhamādana,
3.1.8.67
munayastu puraskṛtya gālavaṃ munipuṃgavam .. 32 ..
the sages, placing Gālava, the foremost of sages, at their head,
3.1.8.68
kimetaditi vijñātuṃ taṃ deśaṃ tūrṇamāyayuḥ ..
came quickly to that place to find out what had happened.
3.1.8.69
taṃ deśaṃ tu samāgatya sarve te ṛṣipuṃgavāḥ .. 33 ..
Arriving at that place, all those foremost seers
3.1.8.70
vidyādharagṛhītāṃ tāṃ dadṛśurmu nikanyakām ..
saw the maiden daughter of the sage seized by the Vidyādhara,
3.1.8.71
vidyādharasutaṃ cānyamaṃtike samupasthitam .. 34 ..
and the other Vidyādhara youth standing nearby.
3.1.8.72
etaddṛṣṭvā mahāyogī gālavo munipuṃgavaḥ ..
Seeing this, the great ascetic Gālava, foremost of sages,
3.1.8.73
gataḥ kopavaśaṃ kiṃciddurāpmānaṃ śaśāpa tam .. 35 ..
fell slightly under the sway of anger and cursed that wicked soul:
3.1.8.74
kṛtavānīdṛśaṃ kāryaṃ yattvaṃ vidyādharādhama ..
"Because you have committed such a deed, O vilest of Vidyādharas,
3.1.8.75
tadyāhi mānuṣīṃ yoniṃ svasya duṣkarmaṇaḥ phalam .. 36 ..
therefore go into a human womb, the fruit of your own evil action!
3.1.8.76
saṃprāpya mānuṣaṃ janma bahuduḥkhasamākulam ..
Having attained a human birth filled with much suffering,
3.1.8.77
acireṇa tu kālena tasminneva tu janmani .. 37 ..
in a short time, in that very birth,
3.1.8.78
manuṣyairapi niṃdyaṃ tadvetālatvaṃ prayāsyasi ..
you shall enter the state of a vetāla, censured even by men.
3.1.8.79
māṃsāni śoṇitaṃ caiva sarvadā bhakṣayiṣyasi .. 38 ..
You shall constantly feed on flesh and blood.
3.1.8.80
vetālā rākṣasaprāyā balādgṛhṇanti yoṣitaḥ ..
Vetālas, like rākṣasas, seize women by force.
3.1.8.81
tasmāttvaṃ mānuṣo bhūtvā vetālatvamavāpsyasi .. 39?..
Therefore, having become human, you shall attain the state of a vetāla.
3.1.8.82
tava duṣkarmaṇo yo'sāvanumaṃtā kaniṣṭhakaḥ ..
Your younger brother, who assented to your evil deed,
3.1.8.83
sukarṇa iti vikhyāto bhavitā sopi mānuṣaḥ .. 3.1.8.40 ..
known as Sukarṇa, he too shall become a human.
3.1.8.84
kiṃtu sākṣānna kṛtavānyato'sāvīdṛśīṃ kriyām..
However, since he did not directly perform such an act,
3.1.8.85
tanmānuṣatva mevāsya vetālatvaṃ tu no bhavet .. 41 ..
he shall have merely the human state, but no state of a vetāla.
3.1.8.86
vijñaptikautukābhikhyaṃ yadā vidyādharādhipam ..
When this younger [brother] of yours sees the lord of the Vidyādharas
3.1.8.87
drakṣyate'sau kaniṣṭhaste tadā śāpādvimokṣyate .. 42 ..
named Vijñaptikautuka, then he shall be released from the curse.
3.1.8.88
īdṛśasyatu yaḥ kartā mahāpāpasya karmaṇaḥ ..
But you, the perpetrator of such a deed of great sin,
3.1.8.89
sa tvaṃ saṃprāpya mānuṣyaṃ tasminneva tu janmani .. 43 ..
having attained human existence, in that very birth,
3.1.8.90
vetālajanma saṃprāpya ciraṃ loke cariṣyasi ..
having obtained birth as a vetāla, shall wander long in the world."
3.1.8.91
ityuktvā gālavaḥ kanyāṃ gṛhītvā munibhiḥ saha .. 44 ..
Having spoken thus, Gālava, taking his daughter along with the sages,
3.1.8.92
vidyādharasutau śaptvā svāśramaṃ prati niryayau ..
and having cursed the two Vidyādhara youths, departed toward his own hermitage.
3.1.8.93
tatastasminmahābhāge niryāte munipuṃgave .. .. 45 ..
Then, when that exalted one, the foremost among sages, had departed,
3.1.8.94
sudarśanasukarṇākhyau vidyādharapateḥ sutau..
the two sons of the lord of the Vidyādharas, named Sudarśana and Sukarṇa,
3.1.8.95
muniśāpena duḥkhārtau ciṃtayāmāsaturbhṛśam .. 46 ..
tormented by grief due to the sage's curse, deliberated deeply.
3.1.8.96
kartavyaṃ tau viniścitya sudarśanasukarṇakau ..
Having decided what was to be done, those two, Sudarśana and Sukarṇa,
3.1.8.97
goviṃdasvāmināmānaṃ yamunātaṭavāsinam .. 47 ..
chose as father a brahmin named Govindasvāmin,
3.1.8.98
brāhmaṇaṃ śīlasaṃpannaṃ pitṛtve parikalpya tau ..
an inhabitant of the bank of the Yamunā and endowed with virtuous conduct;
3.1.8.99
parityajya svakaṃ rūpamajāyetāṃ tadā tmajau .. 48 ..
casting off their own forms, they were born as his two sons.
3.1.8.100
vijayāśokadattākhyau tasya putraubabhūvatuḥ ..
They became his two sons named Vijayadatta and Aśokadatta.
3.1.8.101
suto vijayadattākhyo jyeṣṭho jajñe sudarśanaḥ .. 49 ..
The elder, Sudarśana, was born as the son named Vijayadatta,
3.1.8.102
aśokadattanāmā tu sukarṇaśca kaniṣṭhakaḥ ..
and the younger, Sukarṇa, was indeed named Aśokadatta.
3.1.8.103
vijayāśokadattau tu kramādyauvanamāpatuḥ .. 3.1.8.50 ..
Vijayadatta and Aśokadatta in due course reached youth.
3.1.8.104
etasminneva kāletu yamunāyāstaṭe śubhe ..
At that very time, on the auspicious bank of the Yamunā,
3.1.8.105
anāvṛṣṭyā tu durbhikṣamabhūddvādaśavārṣi kam .. 51 ..
because of drought there arose a twelve-year famine.
3.1.8.106
goviṃdasvāmināmā tu brāhmaṇo vedapāragaḥ ..
The brahmin named Govindasvāmin, a master of the Vedas,
3.1.8.107
durbhikṣopahatāṃ dṛṣṭvā tadānīṃ sa nijāṃ purīm .. 52 ..
seeing his own town afflicted by famine at that time,
3.1.8.108
prayayau kāśanigaraṃ saputraḥ saha bhāryayā ..
set out for the city of Kāśī with his sons and his wife.
3.1.8.109
sa prayāgaṃ samāsādya dvaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāvaṭam.. 53 ..
Having reached Prayāga and seen the great banyan tree,
3.1.8.110
kapālamālābharaṇaṃ so'paśyadyatinaṃ puraḥ ..
he saw before him an ascetic adorned with a garland of skulls.
3.1.8.111
goviṃdasvāmināmā tu namaścakre sa taṃ munim .. 54 ..
He, the one named Govindasvāmin, bowed down to that sage.
3.1.8.112
saputrasya sabhāryasya so'vādīdāśiṣo muniḥ ..
The sage bestowed blessings upon him with his sons and his wife,
3.1.8.113
idaṃ ca vacanaṃ prāha goviṃdasvāminaṃ prati .. 55 ..
and spoke these words to Govindasvāmin:
3.1.8.114
jyeṣṭhenānena putreṇa sāṃprataṃ brāhmaṇottama ..
"Now, O best of brahmins, your separation
3.1.8.115
kṣipraṃ vijayadattena viyogaste bhaviṣyati .. 56 ..
from this eldest son, Vijayadatta, will happen soon."
3.1.8.116
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā goviṃdasvāmināmakaḥ ..
Hearing his word, the one named Govindasvāmin,
3.1.8.117
sūrye cāstaṃ gate tatra sāṃdhyaṃ karma samāpya ca .. 57 ..
after the sun had set there and he had finished his evening rites,
3.1.8.118
sabhāryaḥ sasuto vipraḥ sudūrādhvasamākulaḥ ..
the brahmin, with his wife and sons, exhausted from the very long journey,
3.1.8.119
uvāsa tasyāṃ śarvaryyāṃ śūnye vai devatālaye .. 58 ..
he stayed for that night in a deserted temple.
3.1.8.120
tadā tvaśokadattaśca brāhmaṇī ca samākulau ..
Then Aśokadatta and the brahmin woman, both exhausted,
3.1.8.121
vastreṇāstīrya pṛthivīṃ rātrau nidrāṃ samāpatuḥ .. 59..
spread out a cloth on the ground and fell asleep during the night.
3.1.8.122
tato vijayadattastu dūramārgavilaṃghanāt ..
Then Vijayadatta, however, from traversing a long road,
3.1.8.123
babhūvātyaṃtamalaso bhṛśaṃ śītajvarārditaḥ .. 3.1.8.60 ..
became completely exhausted and severely afflicted with a cold fever.
3.1.8.124
goviṃdasvāminā pitrā śītavabādhānivṛttaye ..
Although he was held tightly in an embrace by his father, Govindasvāmin,
3.1.8.125
gāḍhamāliṃgyamāno'pi śītabādhāṃ na so'tyajat .. 61 ..
in order to dispel the distress of the cold, he could not shake off the tormenting cold.
3.1.8.126
bādhate'tyarthamadhunā tāta māṃ śītalo jvaraḥ ..
"Father, a cold fever torments me excessively right now.
3.1.8.127
etadbādhānivṛttyarthaṃ vahnimānaya mā ciram .. 62 ..
To remove this distress, bring fire without delay!"
3.1.8.128
iti putravacaḥ śrutvā sarvatrāgniṃ gaveṣayan ..
Hearing these words of his son, he searched everywhere for fire;
3.1.8.129
alabdhavahniḥ provāca puna rabhyetya putrakam .. 63 ..
unable to find fire, he approached his son again and said:
3.1.8.130
na vahniṃ putra viṃdāmi mārgamāṇo'pi sarvaśaḥ ..
"Son, I find no fire, though I have searched everywhere.
3.1.8.131
rātrimadhye tu saṃprāpte dvāreṣu pihiteṣu ca .. 64 ..
Since it is the middle of the night and the doors are shut,
3.1.8.132
nidrāparavaśāḥ paurā naiva dāsyaṃti pāvakam ..
the townsfolk, overcome by sleep, will certainly not give fire."
3.1.8.133
itthaṃ vijayadatto'sāvuktaḥ pitrā jvarāturaḥ .. 65 ..
Thus addressed by his father, Vijayadatta, sick with fever,
3.1.8.134
yayāce vahnimevāsau pitaraṃ dīnayā girā ..
begged his father again for fire in a pitiful voice:
3.1.8.135
śītajvarasamudbhūtaśītabādhāprapīḍitam .. 66 ..
"Afflicted as I am by the tormenting cold arisen from this ague,
3.1.8.136
himaśīkaravānvāyurdviguṇaṃ bādhate'dya mām ..
the wind laden with icy mist torments me doubly today.
3.1.8.137
vahnirna labdha iti vai mithyaivoktaṃ pitastvayā .. 67 ..
Father, you spoke falsely indeed when you said fire was not found!
3.1.8.138
dūrādeṣa purobhāge jvālāmālāsamākulaḥ ..
Straight ahead in the distance, crowned with a mass of flames,
3.1.8.139
śikhābhirlelihānobhraṃ dṛśyate paśya pāvakaḥ .. 68 ..
a fire is seen licking the sky with its crests—look!
3.1.8.140
taṃ vahnimānaya kṣipraṃ tāta śītanivṛttaye ..
Quickly bring that fire, father, to dispel this cold!"
3.1.8.141
ityuktavantaṃ taṃ putraṃ sa pitā pratyabhāṣata .. 69 ..
To his son who spoke thus, the father replied:
3.1.8.142
nānṛtaṃ vacmi putrādya satyameva bravīmyaham ..
"I do not speak untruth, my son; today I speak only the truth.
3.1.8.143
vahnimānyo'yamuddeśo dūrādeva vilokyate .. 3.1.8.70 ..
That place with fire is seen only from afar.
3.1.8.144
pitṛkānanadeśaṃ taṃ putra jānīhi sāṃpratam ..
Know, son, that it is the place of the ancestral forest [the cremation ground].
3.1.8.145
yadyeṣobhraṃlihajvālaḥ purastājjvalate'nalaḥ .. 71 ..
The fire that burns ahead, its flames scraping the sky,
3.1.8.146
putra vitrāsajanakaṃ taṃ jānīhi citānalam ..
know that, my son, to be the terrifying fire of a funeral pyre.
3.1.8.147
amaṃgalo na sevyo'yaṃ citāgniḥ sparśadūṣitaḥ .. 72 ..
It is inauspicious and must not be used, this pyre fire corrupted by touch.
3.1.8.148
tasya cāyuḥkṣayaṃ yāti sevate yaścitānalam ..
The lifespan of one who resorts to the fire of a pyre diminishes.
3.1.8.149
tasmāttavāyurhānirmā bhūyāditi mayā suta .. 73 ..
Therefore, son, thinking, 'Let there be no loss of your lifespan,'
3.1.8.150
amaṃgalastathā spṛśyo nānīto'yaṃ citānalaḥ ..
I did not fetch this pyre fire, inauspicious and [unfit] to touch."
3.1.8.151
ityuktavaṃtaṃ pitaraṃ sa dīnaḥ pratyabhāṣata .. 74 ..
To his father who spoke thus, the miserable [son] replied:
3.1.8.152
ayaṃ śavānalo vā syādadhvarānala eva vā ..
"Let it be a corpse-fire or let it be a sacrificial fire;
3.1.8.153
sarvathānīyatāmeṣa nocenme maraṇaṃ bhavet .. 75 ..
bring it by all means, otherwise I will die!"
3.1.8.154
putrasnehābhibhūto'tha samāhartuṃ citānalam ..
Then, overwhelmed by affection for his son, to fetch the pyre fire,
3.1.8.155
goviṃdasvāmināmā tu śmaśānaṃ śīghramabhyagāt .. 76 ..
he named Govindasvāmin quickly went to the cremation ground.
3.1.8.156
goviṃdasvāmini gate samāhartuṃ citānalam..
When Govindasvāmin had gone to fetch the pyre fire,
3.1.8.157
tūrṇaṃ vijayadatto'pi tadā gacchaṃtamanvayāt .. 77 ..
Vijayadatta also hurriedly followed behind him as he went.
3.1.8.158
saṃprāpya tāpanikaṭaṃ vikīrṇāsthi citānalam ..
Reaching the vicinity of the heat, the funeral pyre fire strewn with bones,
3.1.8.159
āliṃganniva sodvegaṃ śanairnirvṛtimāptavān .. 79 ..
as if embracing it anxiously, he gradually obtained relief.
3.1.8.160
athāvādītsa pitaraṃ tadidaṃ parivartulam ..
Then he said to his father: "What is this circular thing,
3.1.8.161
atidīptaṃ vibhātyagnau kiṃ raktāṃbujasannibham ..79 ..
shining brightly in the fire, resembling a red lotus?"
3.1.8.162
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā putrasya brāhmaṇottamaḥ ..
Hearing these words of his son, that best of brahmins,
3.1.8.163
nipuṇaṃ taṃ nirūpyaitadvacanaṃ punarabravīt .. 3.1.8.80 ..
having examined it closely, spoke these words in reply:
3.1.8.164
.. goviṃdasvāmyuvāca .. ..
Govindasvāmin said:
3.1.8.165
etatkapālamanalajvālāvalayavartulam ..
"This is a skull, rounded by the ring of flames of the fire,
3.1.8.166
vasākīkasamāṃsāḍhyametadraktāṃbujopamam .. 81 ..
rich in marrow, bone, and flesh, resembling a red lotus."
3.1.8.167
dvijasya sūnuḥ śrutveti kāṣṭhāgreṇa jaghāna tat ..
Hearing this, the brahmin's son struck it with the tip of a piece of wood,
3.1.8.168
yena tatsphuṭanodgīrṇavasāsiktamukho'bhavat .. 82 ..
whereby his mouth was drenched with marrow discharged from its bursting.
3.1.8.169
kapālaghaṭṭanādraktaṃ yatsaṃsaktaṃ mukhe tadā ..
Licking repeatedly with his tongue the blood that smeared his mouth
3.1.8.170
jihvayā lelihāno'sau muhustadraktamā svadat .. 83 ..
upon striking the skull, he tasted that blood.
3.1.8.171
āsvādyaivaṃ samādāya tatkapālaṃ samākulaḥ ..
Having thus tasted it, taking up that skull agitatedly,
3.1.8.172
pītvā vasāṃ mahākāyo babhūvātibhayaṃkaraḥ .. 84 ..
and drinking the marrow, he became gigantic in body and terrifying.
3.1.8.173
sadyo vetā latāṃ prāpa tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrastadā niśi ..
Immediately, that night, he turned into a vetāla with sharp fangs.
3.1.8.174
tasyāṭṭahāsaghoṣeṇa diśaśca pradiśastadā .. 85 ..
With the sound of his burst of wild laughter, the quarters and intermediate directions,
3.1.8.175
dyauratarikṣaṃ bhūmiśca sphuṭitā iva sarvaśaḥ ..
heaven, the intermediate space, and the earth seemed to burst apart everywhere.
3.1.8.176
tasminvegātsamākṛṣya pitaraṃ hantumudyate .. 86 ..
As he rushed impetuously, dragging his father to kill him,
3.1.8.177
mā kṛthāḥ sāhasamiti prādurāsīdvaco divi ..
a voice appeared in the sky, saying, "Do not commit such violence!"
3.1.8.178
sa divyāṃ giramākarṇya vetālo'tibhayaṃkaraḥ .. 87 ..
Hearing that divine voice, that terrifying vetāla...
3.1.8.179
pitaraṃ taṃ parityajya mahāvegasamanvitaḥ ..
Leaving his father, endowed with great speed,
3.1.8.180
tūrṇamākāśamāviśya prayayāvaskhaladgatiḥ ..88..
he swiftly entered the sky and departed with unhindered flight.
3.1.8.181
sa gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ vetālaiḥ saha saṃgataḥ ..
Having traveled a great distance, he joined with the vetālas.
3.1.8.182
tamāgataṃ samālokya vetolāssarva eva te .. 89 ..
Seeing him arrive, all those vetālas,
3.1.8.183
kapālasphoṭanādeṣa vetālatvaṃ yadāptavān ..
since he had attained vetālahood through the bursting of a skull,
3.1.8.184
kapālasphoṭanāmānamāhvayāṃcakrire tataḥ ..3.1.8.90..
then addressed him by the name Kapālasphoṭana.
3.1.8.185
tataḥ kapālasphoṭo 'sau vetālaiḥ sarvato vṛtaḥ..
Then that Kapālasphoṭa, surrounded on all sides by vetālas,
3.1.8.186
narāsthibhūṣaṇākhyasya sadyo vetālabhūpateḥ ..91..
endowed with great strength, swiftly reached the presence of the king of the vetālas,
3.1.8.187
antikaṃ sahasā prāpa mahābalasamanvitaḥ..
who was named Narāsthibhūṣaṇa.
3.1.8.188
narāsthibhūṣaṇaścainaṃ senāpa timakalpayat .. 92 ..
And Narāsthibhūṣaṇa appointed him commander of the army.
3.1.8.189
taṃ kadācittu gandharvaścitrasenābhidho balī ..
Once, a powerful gandharva named Citrasena
3.1.8.190
narāsthibhūṣaṇaṃ saṃkhye nyavadhītso'pi saṃsthitaḥ .. 93..
slew Narāsthibhūṣaṇa in battle, and he died.
3.1.8.191
narāsthibhūṣaṇe tasmi ngandharveṇa hate yudhi ..
When Narāsthibhūṣaṇa was killed by the gandharva in combat,
3.1.8.192
tadā kapālasphoṭo'sau tatpadaṃ samavāptavān .. 94 ..
then that Kapālasphoṭa obtained his position.
3.1.8.193
vidyādharendrasya sutaḥ sudarśano manuṣyatāṃ vai prathamaṃ sa gatvā ..
Sudarśana, the son of the lord of vidyādharas, having first gone to the human state,
3.1.8.194
vetālatāṃ prāpya maharṣiśāpātkramācca vetālapatirbabhūva .. 95 .. ..
and then attained vetālahood because of the great seer's curse, gradually became the lord of the vetālas.
3.1.8.195
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setu māhātmye vetālavaradatīrthapraśaṃsāyāṃ sudarśanavetālatvaprāptivarṇanaṃ nāmāṣṭamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 8 ..
Thus ends the eighth chapter, titled 'Description of Sudarśana’s Attainment of the State of a Vetāla', in the Praise of the Vetālavarada Tīrtha, in the Setumāhātmya, in the third Brahmakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses.
