3.2.13.21

tatsthau pitṛgṛhe sā tu kiṃcitkālamaniṃditā .. 3.2.13.20 ..
that blameless woman remained in her father's house for some time.
3.2.13.47
tataḥ prāha sa dharmajñaḥ pitā nāticiroṣitām ..
Then her righteous father, Viśvakarman, spoke with love
3.2.13.48
viśvakarmā sutāṃ premṇā bahumā napurassaram .. 21 ..
and high esteem to his daughter, who had stayed not too long:
3.2.13.49

And having honoured her father, she departed for the Northern Kurus.
3.2.13.60
sūryatāpamanicchatī tejasastasya bibhyatī ..
Not desiring the heat of the Sun, and afraid of his splendor,
3.2.13.61
tapaścacāra tatrāpi vaḍavārūpadhāriṇī .. 27 ..
she performed austerity even there, having assumed the form of a mare.
3.2.13.62
saṃjñāmityeva manvāno dvitīyāyāṃ divaspatiḥ ..
Thinking her to be Saṃjñā, the lord of the sky, on that second [woman],
3.2.13.63
janayāmāsa tanayau kanyāṃ caikāṃ manoramām .. 28 ..
begot two sons and one charming maiden.
3.2.13.64
chāyā svatanayeṣveva yathā preṣṇādhyavartata ..
As Chāyā behaved with affection toward her own children,
3.2.13.65
tathā na saṃjñākanyāyāṃ putrayoścāpyavartata ..
she did not behave so toward Saṃjñā's daughter and two sons,
3.2.13.66
lālanāsu ca bhojyeṣu viśeṣamanuvāsaram .. 29 ..
[showing] partiality day after day in pampering and in foods.
3.2.13.67
manustatkṣāṃtavānasyā yamastasyā na cākṣamat ..
Manu endured that from her, but Yama did not endure it from her.

tāḍanāya tataḥ kopātpādastena samudyataḥ ..
Then, out of anger, his foot was raised by him to strike [her].
3.2.13.69
tasyāḥ punaḥ kṣāṃtamanā na tu dehe nyapātayat .. 3.2.13.30 ..
Becoming patient-minded again, however, he did not bring it down upon her body.
3.2.13.70
tataḥ śaśāpa taṃ kopācchāyāsaṃjñā yamaṃ nṛpa ..
Then Chāyāsaṃjñā, out of anger, cursed Yama, O king,
3.2.13.71
kiṃcitprasphuramāṇoṣṭhī vicalatpāṇipallavā .. 31 ..
her lip slightly trembling and her sprout-like hand shaking:
3.2.13.72
patnyāṃ piturmayi yadi pādamudyacchase balāt ..
"Since you violently raise your foot against me, your father's wife,
3.2.13.73
bhuvi tasmādayaṃ pādastavādyaiva bhaviṣyati .. 32 ..
therefore this foot of yours shall fall to the earth this very day!"
3.2.13.74
ityākarṇya yamaḥ śāpaṃ mātaryativiśaṃkitaḥ ..
Hearing this curse, Yama, deeply terrified regarding his mother,
3.2.13.75
abhyetya pitaraṃ prāha praṇipātapurassaram.. 33 ..
approached his father and spoke, preceded by a prostration:
3.2.13.76
tātaitanmahadāścaryamadṛṣṭamiti ca kvacit ..
"Father, this is a great wonder, never seen anywhere,
3.2.13.77
mātā vātsalyarūpeṇa śāpaṃ putre prayacchati ..34..
that a mother, who should be affection incarnate, gives a curse to her son!
3.2.13.78
yathā mātā mamācaṣṭa neyaṃ mātā tathā mama ..
As a mother is described to me, she is not such a mother to me.
3.2.13.79
nirguṇeṣvapi putreṣu na mātā nirguṇā bhavet .. 35 ..
Even towards sons who lack virtue, a mother should not be devoid of virtue."
3.2.13.80
yamasyaitadvacaḥ śrutvā bhagavāṃstimirāpahaḥ ..
Having heard these words of Yama, the blessed dispeller of darkness,
3.2.13.81
chāyāsaṃjñāmathāhūya papraccha kvagateti ca ..36..
then called Chāyāsaṃjñā and asked, "Where has she gone?"
3.2.13.82
sā cāha tanayā tvaṣṭurahaṃ saṃjñā vibhāvaso ..
And she said: "I am Saṃjñā, daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ, O Sun,
3.2.13.83
patnī tava tvayāpatyānyetāni janitāni me .. 37 ..
your wife; these children were begotten by you through me."
3.2.13.84
itthaṃ vivasvatastāṃ tu bahuśaḥ pṛcchato yadā ..
When, though Vivasvat asked her repeatedly in this manner,
3.2.13.85
nācacakṣe tadā kruddho bhāsvāṃstāṃ śaptumudyataḥ .. 38 ..
she did not confess, then the radiant Sun, enraged, prepared to curse her.
3.2.13.86
tataḥ sā kathayāmāsa yathāvṛttaṃ vivasvate ..
Then she told Vivasvat everything as it had happened.
3.2.13.87
viditārthaśca bhagavāñjagāma tvaṣṭu rālayam .. 39 ..
Having learned the matter, the Blessed Lord went to the abode of Tvaṣṭṛ.
3.2.13.88
tataḥ saṃpūjayāmāsa tvaṣṭā trailokyapūjitam ..
Then Tvaṣṭṛ worshipped the one adored by the three worlds:
3.2.13.89
bhāsvankiṃ rahitā śaktyā nijagehamupāgataḥ .. 3.2.13.40 ..
"O Sun, why have you arrived at my house bereft of your power?"
3.2.13.90
saṃjñāṃ papraccha taṃ tasmai kathayāmāsa tattvavit ..
He asked about Saṃjñā; the knower of truth related [everything] to him.

Absorbed in meditation, the Sun saw her
3.2.13.93

bearing the form of a mare, performing austerity in the Northern Kurus.
3.2.13.94
asahyamānā sūryasya tejastenātipīḍitā ..
Unable to endure the Sun's brilliance, deeply tormented by it,
3.2.13.95
vahnyābhanijarūpaṃ tu cchāyārūpaṃ vimucya ca.. 43 ..
abandoning her own form that resembled fire and leaving behind her shadow-form,
3.2.13.96
dharmāraṇye samāgatya tapa stepe suduṣkaram..
she came to Dharmāraṇya and practiced very severe austerity.
3.2.13.97

3.2.13.98
tadaiva vismitaḥ sūryo duṣṭaputrau samīkṣya ca ..
the Sun was astonished upon beholding the two wicked sons,
3.2.13.99
jñātuṃ dadhyau kṣaṇaṃ dhyātvā viditvā tacca kāraṇam .. 45 ..
and meditated in order to understand; having reflected for a moment and discerned the cause—
3.2.13.100
ghṛṇyauṣṇyāddagdhadehā sā tapastepe pativratā ..
that that faithful wife, her body burned by the heat of his rays, had performed austerity
3.2.13.101
yena māṃ tejasā sahyaṃ draṣṭuṃ naiva śaśāka ha .. 46 ..
so that, through that austerity, she could endure seeing me:
3.2.13.102
pañcāśaddhāyanetīte gatvā kau tapa ācarat ..
“Fifty years having elapsed, she went to the earth and practiced austerity.”
3.2.13.103
pradyotano vicāryaivaṃ gatvā śīghraṃ manojavaḥ .. 47 ..

to the excellent and holy Dharmāraṇya, where Saṃjñā was engaged in austerity.
