sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
3.2.29.2
ataḥ paraṃ śṛṇudhvaṃ hi lohāsuraviceṣṭitam ..
"Now hear further about the exploits of Lohāsura;
3.2.29.3
baleḥ putraśatasyāpi kathayiṣyāmi viśrutam .. 1 ..
I shall narrate the famed [story] of Bali's hundred sons as well.
3.2.29.4
yathā tau bhrātarau vṛddhau prāpatuḥ sthānamuttamam..
As those two grown brothers reached the supreme place,
3.2.29.5
tadā prabhṛti vairāgyaṃ daityo lohāsure dadhau .. 2 ..
from that time on, the Daitya Lohāsura conceived detachment:
3.2.29.6
kiṃ karomi kva gacchāmi tapase sthānamuttamam ..
'What shall I do? Where shall I go to a supreme place for austerity,
3.2.29.7
yasya pāraṃ na jānaṃti devatā munayo narāḥ .. 3 ..
whose limit the gods, sages, and men do not know?
3.2.29.8
ko mayā''rādhyatāṃ devo hṛdi ciṃtayate bhṛśam ..
Which god should be propitiated by me?' he pondered deeply in his heart.
3.2.29.9
iti ciṃtayatastasya matirjātā mahātmanaḥ .. 4 ..
As he was pondering thus, a thought arose in that great-souled one:
3.2.29.10
dadhau gaṃgāṃ svaśīrṣeṇa puṣpavaṃtau ca netrayoḥ ..
'[The one who] bore the Gaṅgā with his head, the sun and the moon in his eyes,
3.2.29.11
hṛdā nārāyaṇaṃ devaṃ brahmāṇaṃ kaṭimaṃḍale .. 5 ..
the god Nārāyaṇa in his heart, Brahmā in the region of his waist,
3.2.29.12
iṃdrādyā devatāḥ sarve yaddehe pratibiṃbitāḥ ..
in whose body all the deities headed by Indra are reflected,
3.2.29.13
prapaśyaṃti tadātmānaṃ bhāskaraḥ salile yathā .. 6 ..
and then behold themselves, like the sun in water—
3.2.29.14
tamevārādhayiṣyāmi niraṃjanamakalmaṣaḥ ..
him alone, the taintless one, I shall propitiate, being free from sin.'
3.2.29.15
evaṃ kṛtvā matiṃ daitya stapastepe suduṣkaram ..
Having made this resolve, the Daitya performed exceedingly arduous austerity;
3.2.29.16
bhīto janmabhayādghorādduṣkaraṃ yanmahātmabhiḥ .. 7 ..
terrified by the dreadful fear of rebirth, [he performed austerity] hard to be done by great-souled ones.
3.2.29.17
aṃbubhakṣo vāyubhakṣaḥ śīrṇaparṇāśanastathā ..
Eating only water, consuming wind, and subsisting on fallen leaves,
3.2.29.18
divyaṃ varṣaśataṃ sāgraṃ yadā tepe mahattapaḥ ..
when he had performed great austerity for a full hundred divine years,
3.2.29.19
tatastutoṣa bhagavāṃstriśūlavaradhārakaḥ .. 8 ..
then the Lord who holds the excellent trident was pleased.
3.2.29.20
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..
Īśvara said:
3.2.29.21
varaṃ vṛṇīṣva bhadraṃ te manasā yadabhīpsitam ..
"Choose a boon, hail to you, whatever is desired by your mind.
3.2.29.22
lohāsura mayā deyaṃ tava nāsti tapobalāt .. 9 ..
O Lohāsura, there is nothing that cannot be given by me to you because of the power of your austerity."
3.2.29.23
ityukto dānavastatra śaṃkarāgre vaco'bravīt .. 3.2.29.10 ..
Thus addressed, the Dānava there spoke these words before Śaṃkara:
3.2.29.24
.. lohāsura uvāca .. ..
Lohāsura said:
3.2.29.25
yadi tuṣṭosi deveśa varamekaṃ vṛṇomyaham ..
"If you are pleased, O Lord of the gods, I choose one boon:
3.2.29.26
śarīrasyājaratvaṃ ca mā mṛtyorapi me bhayam .. 11 ..
the agelessness of my body, and let me have no fear even of death;
3.2.29.27
janmanyasminprabho bhūyātsthātavyaṃ hṛdaye mama ..
in this birth, O Lord, may you always dwell in my heart."
3.2.29.28
evamastu śivaḥ prāha tatra taṃ dānaveśvaram .. 12 ..
"So be it," Śiva said there to that lord of Dānavas.
3.2.29.29
śarvalabdhavaro daivātpunastepe mahattapaḥ ..
Having obtained a boon from Śarva, by destiny he again performed great austerity
3.2.29.30
ramye sarasvatītīre taraṇāya bhavārṇavāt .. 13 ..
on the charming bank of the Sarasvatī to cross the ocean of worldly existence.
3.2.29.31
vatsarāṇāṃ sahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca ..
For thousands of years, millions, and hundreds of millions,
3.2.29.32
śaṃkate bhagavāniṃdro bhītastasya tapobalāt .. 14 ..
the blessed Indra became anxious, terrified by the power of his austerity:
3.2.29.33
mā me padacyutirbhūyāddaityallohāsurātkvacit ..
"'May there never be a fall from my position due to the Daitya Lohāsura.'
3.2.29.34
maghavānguptarūpeṇa sametyāśramakānanam .. 15 ..
Maghavan, approaching the forest of the hermitage in a disguised form,
3.2.29.35
tapobhaṃgaṃ prakurute kaṃpayitvā mahāsuram ..
caused an interruption in the austerity by shaking the great Asura.
3.2.29.36
tāḍayaṃti śarīre taṃ muṣṭibhistīkṣṇakarkaśaiḥ .. 16 ..
They struck him on the body with sharp, hard fists.
3.2.29.37
atha tena ca daityena dhyānamutsṛjya vīkṣitam ..
Then, releasing his meditation, the Daitya looked,
3.2.29.38
iṃdreṇa tatkṛtaṃ sarvaṃ tapobalavināśanam .. 17 ..
[and saw] all that had been done by Indra to destroy the power of his austerity.
3.2.29.39
tasya tairabhavadyuddhamiṃdrādyairatha karkkaśaiḥ ..
Then a battle took place between him and those fierce ones headed by Indra;
3.2.29.40
ekasya bahubhiḥ sārddhaṃ devāste tena saṃyuge .. 18 ..
it was one against many, and those gods in battle with him
3.2.29.41
rudhirāklinnadehā vai prahārairjarjarīkṛtāḥ ..
became soaked in blood on their bodies, battered by his blows.
3.2.29.42
keśavaṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptā trāhi trāhīti bhāṣiṇaḥ .. 19 .. ..
They sought refuge with Keśava, crying out: 'Protect us, protect us!'"
3.2.29.43
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
3.2.29.44
devānāṃ vākyamākarṇya vāsudevo janārdanaḥ ..
"Hearing the word of the gods, Vāsudeva Janārdana,
3.2.29.45
yuyudhe keśavastena yuddhe varṣaśataṃ kila .. 3.2.29.20 ..
Keśava, fought with him in battle indeed for a hundred years.
3.2.29.46
tato nārāyaṇaṃ tatra jigāya sa varorjitaḥ ..
Then, empowered by the boon, he conquered Nārāyaṇa there.
3.2.29.47
atha nārāyaṇo devo jito lohāsureṇa tu .. 21 ..
Now the god Nārāyaṇa, defeated by Lohāsura,
3.2.29.48
maṃtrayāmāsa rudreṇa brahmaṇā ca punaḥpunaḥ ..
deliberated again and again with Rudra and Brahmā.
3.2.29.49
mīmāṃsitvā trayo devāḥ punaryuddhasamudyamam .. 22 ..
Having deliberated, the three gods prepared again for battle,
3.2.29.50
lohāsurasya daityasya vapurdṛṣṭvā punarnavam ..
having seen that the body of the Daitya Lohāsura was renewed once more.
3.2.29.51
mahadāsītpunaryuddhaṃ daityakeśavayostataḥ .. 23 ..
Then a great battle took place again between the Daitya and Keśava.
3.2.29.52
na mamāra yadā daityo viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā ..
When the Daitya did not die at the hands of the mighty Viṣṇu,
3.2.29.53
tarasā taṃ keśavo'pi pātayāmāsa bhūtale .. 24 ..
Keśava threw him forcefully down upon the ground.
3.2.29.54
uttānaṃ patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā pinākī parameśvaraḥ ..
Seeing him fallen on his back, the Supreme Lord who holds the Pināka,
3.2.29.55
dadhāra hṛdaye tasya svarūpaṃ rūpavarjitaḥ .. 25 ..
devoid of form, placed his own form upon his heart.
3.2.29.56
kaṇṭhe tasthau tato brahmā tasya lohāsurasya ca ..
Then Brahmā stood upon the throat of that Lohāsura,
3.2.29.57
caraṇau pīḍayāmāsa svasthityā puruṣottamaḥ .. 26 ..
and Puruṣottama oppressed his feet by his own position.
3.2.29.58
atha daityaḥ samuttasthau bhṛśaṃ baddhopi bhūtale ..
Then the Daitya rose up, even though bound tightly to the ground.
3.2.29.59
dṛṣṭvotthitaṃ tato daityaṃ pātayaṃtaṃ surottamān .. 27 ..
Seeing the Daitya risen and throwing down the foremost gods,
3.2.29.60
uvāca divyayā vācā viraṃciḥ kamalāsanaḥ .. 28 .. ..
Virañci, seated upon the lotus, spoke with a divine voice:
3.2.29.61
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
3.2.29.62
lohāsura sadā rakṣa vācodharmamabhīkṣṇaśaḥ ..
“O Lohāsura, always preserve the duty of your word repeatedly;
3.2.29.63
tvayā yatprārthitaṃ rudrāttadeva samupasthitam .. 29 ..
that very thing which was requested by you from Rudra has now arrived!
3.2.29.64
ahaṃ viṣṇuśca rudraśca trayo'mī surasattamāḥ ..
I, Viṣṇu, and Rudra—these three foremost of gods—
3.2.29.65
tvaddehamupavekṣyāmo yāvadābhūtasaṃplavam .. 3.2.29.30 ..
will enter into your body until the dissolution of all beings.
3.2.29.66
dānaveśa śivaprāptirbhāvabhaktyaiva jāyate ..
O lord of Dānavas, the attainment of Śiva arises only through devoted bhakti;
3.2.29.67
śivaṃ cālayituṃ buddhiḥ kathaṃ tava bhaviṣyati .. 31 ..
how can you intend to shake Śiva?
3.2.29.68
acalāṃścālayedyastu prāsādānbrāhmaṇānpurān ..
He who would move what is unshakeable—temples, brahmins, or cities—
3.2.29.69
acireṇaiva kālena pātakenaiva lipyate .. 32 ..
is tainted with sin in no time at all.
3.2.29.70
śmaśānavatparityājyaḥ satyadharmabahiṣkṛtaḥ ..
He should be abandoned like a cremation ground, cast out from truth and duty.
3.2.29.71
satyavāgasi bhadraṃ te mā vicālaya devatāḥ .. 33 ..
You are true to your word; may there be welfare to you! Do not displace the deities!
3.2.29.72
yena yātāstu pitaro yena yātāḥ pitāmahāḥ ..
The path along which the fathers have gone, along which the grandfathers have gone,
3.2.29.73
tena mārgeṇa gaṃtavyaṃ na collaṃghyā satāṃ gatiḥ .. 34 ..
by that path one should go; the course of the virtuous must not be violated.
3.2.29.74
dānaveśa pitā te hi dadau lokatrayaṃ hareḥ ..
O lord of Dānavas, your father gave the three worlds to Hari;
3.2.29.75
vākpāśabaddhaḥ pātāle rājyaṃ cakre mahīpatiḥ .. 35 ..
bound by the bond of his word, that king of the earth ruled in Pātāla.
3.2.29.76
tathā tvamasi vākpāśācchivabhaktisamanvitaḥ ..
Likewise, you are bound by the bond of your word and endowed with devotion to Śiva.
3.2.29.77
bhūtale tiṣṭha daityeṃdra mā vāgvaikalpyamāpnuhi .. 36 ..
Stay upon the surface of the earth, O king of Daityas; do not incur a failure of your word!
3.2.29.78
varāṃste ca pradāsyāmo mā vicālyā hi devatāḥ .. 37 .. ..
And we shall grant you boons; the deities must not be displaced!”
3.2.29.79
.. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
3.2.29.80
tacchrutvā brahmaṇo vākyaṃ saṃtuṣṭo dānaveśvaraḥ ..
Hearing that speech of Brahmā, the lord of Dānavas was pleased;
3.2.29.81
prāha prasannayā vācā brahmāṇaṃ keśavaṃ haram .. 38 ..
with a gracious voice, he spoke to Brahmā, Keśava, and Hara:
3.2.29.82
.. lohāsura uvāca .. ..
Lohāsura said:
3.2.29.83
vākpāśabaddhastiṣṭhāmi na punarbhavatāṃ bale ..
“I remain bound by the bond of my word, not indeed through your strength.
3.2.29.84
brahmā viṣṇuśca rudraśca trayo'mī surasattamāḥ .. 39 ..
If these three foremost among the gods—Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Rudra—
3.2.29.85
sthāsyaṃti ceccharīre me kiṃ na labdhaṃ mayā tataḥ ..
will abide in my body, then what have I not obtained?
3.2.29.86
idaṃ kalevaraṃ me hi samārūḍhaṃ tribhiḥ suraiḥ .. 3.2.29.40 ..
May this body of mine, indeed mounted by the three gods,
3.2.29.87
bhūmyāṃ bhavatu vikhyātaṃ matprabhāvātsurottamāḥ .. 41 ..
become renowned on earth through my power, O foremost of gods!”
3.2.29.88
lohāsurasya vākyena harṣitā stridaśāstrayaḥ ..
Gladdened by the words of Lohāsura, the three gods,
3.2.29.89
daduḥ pratyuttaraṃ tasmai brahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ .. 42 ..
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara, gave an answer to him:
3.2.29.90
satyavākpāśato daityo na satyāccalito yataḥ ..
“Since the Daitya did not swerve from truth due to the bond of his true word,
3.2.29.91
tena satyena saṃtuṣṭā dāsyā maste manīpsitam .. 43 ..
pleased by that truth, we will grant you what is desired in your heart.”
3.2.29.92
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
3.2.29.93
yathā snānaṃ brahmajñānaṃ dehatyāgo gayātale ..
“Just as ritual ablution, knowledge of Brahman, and abandonment of the body [are fruitful] at Gayā,
3.2.29.94
dharmāraṇye tathā daitya dharmmeśvarapuraḥ sthite .. 44 ..
so too, O Daitya, in Dharmāraṇya, before Dharmeśvara.
3.2.29.95
kūpe tarppaṇakaṃ śrāddhaṃ śaṃsaṃti pitaro divi ..
The ancestors in heaven praise the libation and the ancestral rite performed at the well,
3.2.29.96
saṃtuṣṭā piṃḍadānena gayāyāṃ pitaro yathā .. 45 ..
just as the ancestors are satisfied by the offering of balls of food at Gayā.
3.2.29.97
vāṃchaṃti tarppaṇaṃ kūpe dharmāraṇye viśuddhaye ..
They desire a libation at the well in Dharmāraṇya for their purification.
3.2.29.98
dānavendra śarīraṃ tu tīrthaṃ tava bhaviṣyati .. 46 ..
O lord of Dānavas, your body indeed shall become a sacred ford.
3.2.29.99
ekaviṃśativārāṃstu gayāyāṃ tarppaṇe kṛte ..
Whatever supreme satisfaction of the ancestors arises
3.2.29.100
pitṝṇāṃ yā parā tṛptirjāyate dānavādhipa .. 47 ..
when libations are offered twenty-one times at Gayā, O ruler of Dānavas,
3.2.29.101
dharmeśvara purastātsā tvekadā pitṛtarpaṇāt ..
tenfold satisfaction shall indeed be had from offering ancestors' libations
3.2.29.102
syādvai daśaguṇā tṛptiḥ satyameva na saṃśayaḥ .. 48 ..
once before Dharmeśvara; it is true indeed, there is no doubt!
3.2.29.103
pitṝṇāṃ piṃḍadānena akṣayyā tṛptirastviha ..
Let there be imperishable satisfaction for the ancestors here through the offering of balls of food,
3.2.29.104
śivarūpāṃtarāle vai dharmāraṇye dharātale ..49..
in the space of Śiva's form, in Dharmāraṇya on the earth.
3.2.29.105
śraddhayaiva hi karttavyāḥ śrāddhapiṃḍodakakriyāḥ ..
The rites of the ancestral rite, balls of food, and water must be performed with faith alone,
3.2.29.106
tathāṃtarāle cāsmākaṃ śrāddhapiṃḍau viśeṣataḥ .. 3.2.29.50 ..
and especially the ancestral rite and balls of food in the space between us.
3.2.29.107
tathā śarīre kvāpistāṃciṃtā satyo'si suvrata..
So also [let there be no] worry anywhere on your body; you are true, O you of noble vows!
3.2.29.108
triṣu lokeṣu duṣprāpaṃ satyaṃ te divi saṃsthitam ..51..
Difficult to obtain in the three worlds, your truth is established in heaven.”
3.2.29.109
asmadvākyena satyena tattathā'surasattama ..
By our truthful word, it shall be so, O best of asuras!
3.2.29.110
gayāsamadhikaṃ tīrthaṃ tava jātaṃ dharātale..52..
On the surface of the earth, your [body] has become a sacred ford superior even to Gayā.
3.2.29.111
asmākaṃ sthitiravyagrā tava dehe na saṃśayaḥ ..
Our residence within your body is undisturbed, there is no doubt.
3.2.29.112
satyapāśena baddhāḥ sma dṛḍhameva tvayā'nagha..53..
O sinless one, we are bound indeed firmly by you with the snare of truth.
3.2.29.113
.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:
3.2.29.114
gayāprayāga kasyā'pi phalaṃ samadhikaṃ smṛtam ..
The fruit is traditionally held to be even greater than that of Gayā, Prayāga, and Kāśī,
3.2.29.115
caturddaśyāmamāvāsyāṃ lohayaṣṭyāṃ piṃḍadānataḥ .. 54 ..
from offering piṇḍas at the Lohayaṣṭi on the fourteenth day and the new moon.
3.2.29.116
baliputrasya satyena mahatī tṛptiratra hi ..
By the truthfulness of the son of Bali, great satisfaction indeed [arises] here.
3.2.29.117
mā kuruṣvātra saṃdehaṃ tava dehe sthitā svayam .. 55 ..
Have no doubt about this: having situated herself directly in your body,
3.2.29.118
sarasvatī puṇyatoyā brahmalokātprayātyuta ..
the Sarasvatī, of sacred waters, flows forth from the world of Brahmā.
3.2.29.119
plāvayiṣyaṃti dehāṃgaṃ mayā saha susaṃgatā ..56..
Closely joined with me, she will bathe the limbs of your body.
3.2.29.120
yatho vai dvārakā vāso devastatra maheśvaraḥ ..
Where Dvārakā is situated, Lord Maheśvara is there,
3.2.29.121
viraṃciryatra tīrthāni trīṇyetāni dharātale .. 57 ..
and [where] Virañci is—these three sacred fords upon the surface of the earth,
3.2.29.122
bhaviṣyati ca pātāle svargaloke yamakṣaye ..
and in Pātāla, in heaven, and in the abode of Yama,
3.2.29.123
vikhyātānyasuraśreṣṭha pi tṝṇāṃ tṛptihetave ..58..
shall be renowned, O best of asuras, for the purpose of satisfying the ancestors.
3.2.29.124
athānyatsaṃpravakṣyāmi gāthāṃ pitṛkṛtāṃ parām ..
Now I will declare another supreme verse recited by the ancestors,
3.2.29.125
ājñārūpāṃ hi putrāṇāṃ tāṃ śṛṇuṣva mamānagha ..59..
which has the nature of a command for sons. Hear it from me, O sinless one:
3.2.29.126
pitara ūcuḥ..
The ancestors said:
3.2.29.127
śaṃkarasyāgrataḥ sthānaṃ rudralokapradaṃ nṛṇām ..
The place in front of Śaṃkara bestows the world of Rudra upon men,
3.2.29.128
pāpadehaviśuddhyarthaṃ pāpenopahatātmanām ..3.2.29.60..
for the sake of purifying the sinful body of those whose minds are struck down by sin.
3.2.29.129
tasmiṃstilodakenāpi sadgatiṃ yāṃti tarpitāḥ ..
There, having been gratified even with water and sesame seeds by a good, wise son,
3.2.29.130
pitaro narakādvā pi suputreṇa sumedhasā .. 61 ..
the ancestors go from hell to a good destination.
3.2.29.131
gopradānaṃ praśaṃsaṃti tattatra pitṛmuktaye ..
They praise the gift of a cow there for the liberation of the ancestors,
3.2.29.132
pitrādikānsamuddiśya dṛṣṭvā rudraṃ ca keśavam ..62..
having dedicated it to the father and others, after beholding Rudra and Keśava.
3.2.29.133
tilapiṇyākapiṃḍena tṛptiṃ yāsyāmahe parām ..
"With an offering of sesame paste we will attain supreme satisfaction
3.2.29.134
caturddaśyāmamāvāsyāṃ tathā ca pitṛtarpaṇam .. 63 ..
on the fourteenth day and the new moon, and likewise through the libation to the ancestors.
3.2.29.135
ajñātagotrajanmānastebhyaḥ piṃḍāṃstu nirvapet ..
One should offer piṇḍas for those whose lineage and birth are unknown;
3.2.29.136
te'pi yāṃti divaṃ sarve ye datta iti śrutiḥ .. 64 ..
they too all go to heaven—such is the sacred tradition regarding whoever is offered [a piṇḍa]."
3.2.29.137
sarvakāryāṇi saṃtyajya mānavaiḥ puṇyamīpsubhiḥ ..
Abandoning all [other] tasks, men desiring merit
3.2.29.138
prāpte bhādrapade māse gaṃtavyā lohayiṣṭakā ..
should go to the Lohayaṣṭi when the month of Bhādrapada arrives.
3.2.29.139
ajñātagotranāmnā tu piṃḍa maṃtramimaṃ śṛṇu .. 65 ..
Hear this mantra for the piṇḍa for those of unknown lineage and name:
3.2.29.140
pitṛvaṃśe mṛtā ye ca mātṛvaṃśe tathaiva ca ..
"Those who have died in the paternal line, and likewise in the maternal line,
3.2.29.141
atītagotrajāstebhyaḥ piṃḍo'yamupatiṣṭhatu .. 66 ..
and those born of gone lineages—may this piṇḍa be presented to them!"
3.2.29.142
.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:
3.2.29.143
anenaiva tu maṃtreṇa mamāgre surasattama ..
With this very mantra, O best of gods [or asuras], in front of me,
3.2.29.144
kṣīṇe caṃdre caturddaśyāṃ nabhasye piṃḍamāharet .. 67 ..
on the fourteenth day of the waning moon in the month of Nabhasya, one should offer the piṇḍa.
3.2.29.145
pitṝṇāmakṣayā tṛptirbhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ..
Inexhaustible satisfaction will belong to the ancestors; of this there is no doubt.
3.2.29.146
tilapiṇyākapiṃḍena pitaro mokṣamāpnuyuḥ .. 68 ..
Through an offering of sesame paste, the ancestors obtain liberation.
3.2.29.147
kṣaṇatrayavinirmuktā mānavā jagatītale ..
Freed from the three debts, men upon the surface of the earth
3.2.29.148
bhaviṣyaṃti na saṃdeho lohayaṣṭyā tilatarpaṇe .. 69 ..
will become [liberated], without doubt, by offering water and sesame seeds at the Lohayaṣṭi.
3.2.29.149
snātvā yaḥ kurute cātra pitṛpiṃḍodakakriyāḥ ..
Whoever, having bathed here, performs the rites of piṇḍas and water for the ancestors,
3.2.29.150
pitarastasya tṛpyaṃti yāvadbrahmadivāniśam .. 3.2.29.70 ..
his ancestors are satisfied for as long as a day and night of Brahmā.
