.. rāma uvāca .. ..
Rāma said:
3.2.33.2
jīrṇoddhāraṃ kariṣyāmi śrīmāturvacanādaham ..
"I shall carry out the restoration in accordance with Śrīmātā's word.
3.2.33.3
ājñā pradīyatāṃ mahyaṃ yathādānaṃ dadāmi vaḥ .. 1 ..
Grant me permission, so that I may give gifts to you as is fitting.
3.2.33.4
pātre dānaṃ pradātavyaṃ kṛtvā yajñavaraṃ dvijāḥ ..
Gifts must be given to a worthy recipient after performing an excellent sacrifice, O twice-born."
3.2.33.5
nāpātre dīyate kiṃciddattaṃ na tu sukhāvaham .. 2 ..
Nothing should be given to an unworthy recipient; what is given [to such a one] brings no happiness.
3.2.33.6
supātraṃ nauriva sadā tārayedubhayorapi ..
A worthy recipient, like a boat, always carries both across;
3.2.33.7
lohapiṃḍopamaṃ jñeyaṃ kupātraṃ bhañjanātmakam .. 3 ..
an unworthy recipient should be known as like a lump of iron, destined to sink.
3.2.33.8
jātimātreṇa vipratvaṃ jāyate na hi bho dvijāḥ ..
Brahminhood does not arise merely by birth, O twice-born ones!
3.2.33.9
kriyā balavatī loke kriyāhīne kutaḥ phalam .. 4 ..
Action is powerful in the world; for one devoid of action, whence can come any fruit?
3.2.33.10
pūjyāstasmātpūjyatamā brāhmaṇāḥ satyavādinaḥ ..
Therefore, the most venerable brahmins are those who speak the truth.
3.2.33.11
yajñakārye samutpanne kṛpāṃ kurvaṃtu sarvadā .. 5 ..
When a sacrificial task arises, may you always show grace.”
3.2.33.12
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
3.2.33.13
tatastu militāḥ sarve vimṛśya ca parasparam ..
Then, having gathered together and consulted with one another,
3.2.33.14
kecidūcustadā rāmaṃ vayaṃ śiloṃchajīvikāḥ .. 6 ..
some among them said to Rāma: “We live by gleaning grains of corn.
3.2.33.15
saṃtoṣaṃ paramāsthāya sthitā dharmaparāyaṇāḥ ..
Relying on supreme contentment, devoted to righteousness, we abide here;
3.2.33.16
pratigrahaprayogeṇa na cāsmākaṃ prayojanam .. 7 ..
we have no need to practice accepting gifts.
3.2.33.17
daśasūnāsamaścakrī daśacakrisamo dhvajaḥ ..
An oil-presser is equal to ten slaughter-houses; a tavern keeper is equal to ten oil-pressers;
3.2.33.18
daśadhvajasamā veśyā daśaveśyāsamo nṛpaḥ .. 8 ..
a courtesan is equal to ten tavern keepers; a king is equal to ten courtesans.
3.2.33.19
rājapratigraho ghoro rāma satyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ..
Accepting a gift from a king is dreadful, O Rāma; this is true, there is no doubt.
3.2.33.20
tasmādvayaṃ na cecchāmaḥ pratigrahaṃ bhayā vaham .. 9 ..
Therefore, we do not desire an acceptance of gifts that brings fear.”
3.2.33.21
ekāhikā dvijāḥ kecitkecitsvāmṛtavṛttayaḥ ..
Some twice-born ones had provisions for only one day; some subsisted on what came unsolicited;
3.2.33.22
kumbhīdhānyā dvijāḥ kecitkecitṣaṭkarmatatparāḥ .. 3.2.33.10 ..
some twice-born ones had grain stored only in a single jar; some were intent on the six priestly duties.
3.2.33.23
trimūrtisthāpitāḥ sarve pṛthagbhāvāḥ pṛthagguṇāḥ ..
All had been established by the Trinity, having diverse dispositions and distinct qualities.
3.2.33.24
kecidevaṃ vadaṃti sma trimūrtyājñāṃ vinā vayam .. 11 ..
Some of them spoke thus: “Without the command of the Trinity,
3.2.33.25
pratigrahasya svīkāraṃ kathaṃ kuryāma ha dvijāḥ ..
how could we, twice-born ones, accept any gift?
3.2.33.26
na tāṃbūlaṃ strīkṛtaṃ no hyadmo dānena bhaṣitam .. 12 ..
We do not take betel, nor do we accept women, nor do we eat what is spoken of as a donation.”
3.2.33.27
vimṛśya sa tadā rāmo vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ..
Having reflected then together with the great-souled Vasiṣṭha,
3.2.33.28
brahmaviṣṇuśivādīnāṃ sasmāra guruṇā saha ..
Rāma, along with his guru, remembered Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and the other gods.
3.2.33.29
smṛtamātrāstato devāstaṃ deśaṃ samupāgaman..
As soon as they were remembered, the gods came to that region,
3.2.33.30
sūryakoṭipratīkāśīvamānāvalisaṃvṛtāḥ .. 14 ..
surrounded by hosts of aerial chariots resplendent as ten million suns.
3.2.33.31
rāmeṇa te yathānyāyaṃ pūjitāḥ parayā mudā .. 13 ..
They were duly worshipped by Rāma with the highest joy,
3.2.33.32
niveditaṃ tu tatsarvaṃ rāmeṇātisubuddhinā .. 15 ..
and everything was explained by Rāma of exceedingly noble intellect:
3.2.33.33
adhidevyā vacanato jīrṇoddhāraṃ karomyaham ..
“By the command of the tutelary goddess, I am undertaking the renovation
3.2.33.34
dharmāraṇye harikṣetre dharmakūpasamīpataḥ .. 16 ..
in Dharmāraṇya, the sacred field of Hari, near the Dharmakūpa.”
3.2.33.35
tataste vāḍavāḥ sarve trimūrttīḥ praṇipatya ca ..
Then all those brahmins bowed down to the Trinity,
3.2.33.36
mahatā harṣavṛṃdena pūrṇāḥ prāptamanorathāḥ .. 17 ..
filled with a great multitude of joy, their desires attained.
3.2.33.37
arghyapādyādividhinā śraddhayā tānapūjayan ..
They worshipped them with faith through the rites of water for hospitality, water for the feet, and the rest.
3.2.33.38
kṣaṇaṃ viśramya te devā brahmaviṣṇuśivādayaḥ .. 18 ..
Having rested for a moment, those gods, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and the others,
3.2.33.39
ūcū rāmaṃ mahāśaktiṃ vinayātkṛtasaṃpuṭam .. 19 ..
spoke to Rāma, who possessed great power and stood with hands joined in modesty.
3.2.33.40
.. devā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gods said:
3.2.33.41
devadruhastvayā rāma ye hatā rāvaṇādayaḥ ..
“O Rāma, since those who hated the gods, Rāvaṇa and the others, were slain by you,
3.2.33.42
tena tuṣṭā vayaṃ sarve bhānuvaṃśavibhūṣaṇa .. 3.2.33.20 ..
we are all pleased by that, O ornament of the Solar race!
3.2.33.43
uddharasva mahāsthānaṃ mahatīṃ kīrtimāpnuhi .. 21 ..
Renovate the great sacred place, and obtain immense renown!”
3.2.33.44
labdhvā sa teṣāmājñāṃ tu prīto daśarathātmajaḥ ..
Having received their command, the son of Daśaratha was pleased;
3.2.33.45
jīrṇoddhāre'naṃtaguṇaṃ phalamicchannilāpatiḥ .. 22 ..
desiring an infinitely multiplied fruit from the restoration, the lord of the earth
3.2.33.46
devānāṃ saṃnidhau teṣāṃ kāryāraṃbhamathākarot ..
then commenced the work in the presence of those gods.
3.2.33.47
sthaṃḍilaṃ pūrvataḥ kṛtvā mahāgiri samaṃ śubham..23..
Having first constructed an auspicious raised terrace like a great mountain,
3.2.33.48
tasyopari bahiḥśālā gṛhaśālā hyanekaśaḥ ..
upon it he built many outer halls and household halls,
3.2.33.49
brahmaśālāśca bahuśo nirmame śobhanākṛtīḥ ..24..
and numerous assembly halls of beautiful appearance,
3.2.33.50
nidhānaiśca samāyuktā gṛhopakaraṇai rvṛtāḥ ..
furnished with treasures, filled with household utensils,
3.2.33.51
suvarṇakoṭisaṃpūrṇā rasavastrādipūritāḥ .. 25 ..
filled with crores of gold, supplied with fluids, garments, and other goods,
3.2.33.52
dhanadhānyasamṛddhāśca sarvadhātuyutāstathā ..
rich in wealth and grain, and stocked with all kinds of minerals.
3.2.33.53
etatsarvaṃ kārayitvā brāhmaṇebhyastadā dadau ..26..
Having had all this prepared, he then gave it to the brahmins.
3.2.33.54
ekaikaśo daśadaśa dadau dhenūḥ payasvinīḥ ..
To each one individually he gave ten milch cows;
3.2.33.55
catvāriṃśacchataṃ prādādgrāmāṇāṃ caturādhikam .. 27 ..
he granted one hundred and forty-four villages
3.2.33.56
traividyadvijaviprebhyo rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ..
to the learned twice-born brahmins, did Rāma, the son of Daśaratha.
3.2.33.57
kājeśena trayeṇaiva sthāpitā dvijasattamāḥ .. 28 ..
These best among the twice-born were established by the triad of lords headed by the creator Brahmā;
3.2.33.58
tasmāttrayīvidya iti khyātirloke babhūva ha ..
therefore their fame as 'knowers of the three Vedas' arose in the world.
3.2.33.59
evaṃvidhaṃ dvijebhyaḥ sa dattvā dānaṃ mahādbhutam .. .. 29 ..
Having given such a wonderful gift to the twice-born,
3.2.33.60
ātmānaṃ cāpi mene sa kṛtakṛtyaṃ nareśvaraḥ ..
the lord of men considered himself to have achieved his purpose.
3.2.33.61

were honored by the descendant of Raghu when the restoration was completed.
3.2.33.63
ṣaṭtriṃśacca sahasrāṇi gobhujā ye vaṇigvarāḥ .. 31 ..
And thirty-six thousand Gobhujas, who were excellent merchants,
3.2.33.64
śuśrūṣārthaṃ pradattā vai devairhariharādibhiḥ..
were assigned by the gods, headed by Hari and Hara, to serve them.
3.2.33.65
saṃtuṣṭena tu śarveṇa tebhyo dattaṃ tu ceta nam.. 32 ..
And by the pleased Śarva, conscious life was given to them;
3.2.33.66
śvetāśvacāmarau dattau khaṅgaṃ dattaṃ sunirmalam ..
a white horse and fly-whisks were given, and a spotless sword was given.

vivāhādau sadā bhāvyaṃ cāmarai maṃgalaṃ varam ..
"At weddings and other rites, let there always be the supreme blessing with fly-whisks;

3.2.33.73
pradeyaṃ bālavṛddhebhyo mama rāmasya śāsanāt .. 36 ..
and must be granted to the young and old, by my, Rāma's, command."
3.2.33.74
maṃḍaleṣu ca ye śuddhā vaṇigvṛttiratāḥ parāḥ ..
And those who were pure in the provinces, devoted to the highest mercantile livelihood,
3.2.33.75
sapādalakṣāste dattā rāmaśāsanapālakāḥ .. 37 ..
one hundred and twenty-five thousand were given, protectors of Rāma's edict;
