In the excellent, celestial Dharmāraṇya, when Bakulārka was well established,
3.2.34.9

and when Śūnyasvāmin, the lord Nārāyaṇa, was present, O chief of brahmins;

yet visibly seen, my son, is the imperishable charter of the brahmins.
3.2.34.17
avināśo hi tāmrasya kāraṇaṃ tatra vidyate .. 7 ..
Indeed, the imperishability of that copper has a reason behind it:
3.2.34.18
vedoktaṃ sakalaṃ yasmādviṣṇureva hi kathyate ..
for everything stated in the Vedas is said to be none other than Viṣṇu.
3.2.34.19

In the Purāṇas, the Vedas, and the treatises on dharma, O descendant of Bharata,

3.2.34.27

tenedaṃ śāsanaṃ dattamakṣayaṃ na kathaṃ bhavet .. 15 ..
By him this charter was granted; how could it not be imperishable?
3.2.34.34
svavaṃśavarṇanaṃ tatra likhitvā svayameva tu ..
Having himself written down the description of his own lineage there,
3.2.34.35
deśakālādikaṃ sarvaṃ lilekha vidhipūrvakam .. 16 ..
he inscribed everything according to rule, including the place, time, and so forth.
3.2.34.36
svamudrācihnitaṃ tatra traividyebhyastathā dadau..
Marked with his own seal, he then gave it there to the masters of the three Vedas;

Rāma, son of Daśaratha, was forty-four years old.
3.2.34.38

At that time a great wonder was granted, O descendant of Bharata:
3.2.34.39
tatra svarṇopamaṃ cāpi raupyopamama thāpi ca .. 18 ..
there, water resembling gold and also resembling silver
3.2.34.40

That was performed by Sūrya before the chief of his own lineage.
3.2.34.42
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ rāmo viṣṇuṃ prapūjya ca ..
Seeing that great wonder and having worshipped Viṣṇu,
3.2.34.43
rāmalekhavicitraistu likhitaṃ dharmaśāsanam .. 3.2.34.20 ..
Rāma inscribed the charter of dharma in varied characters of Rāma's handwriting.
3.2.34.44
yaddṛṣṭvātha dvijāḥ sarve saṃsārabhayabaṃdhanam ..
Having seen it, all the brahmins never make an entrapment
3.2.34.45
kurvate naiva yasmācca tasmānnikhilarakṣakam .. .. 21 ..
out of fear of worldly existence, because of which [charter], therefore, it is the protector of all.

On the wondrous copper plate with diverse characters of Rāma's writing,
3.2.34.49
vākyānīmāni śrūyaṃte śāsane kila nārada .. 23 ..
these words are indeed heard in the charter, O Nārada:
3.2.34.50
āsphoṭayaṃti pitaraḥ kathayaṃti pitāmahāḥ ..
“Ancestors clap their hands, grandfathers proclaim:
3.2.34.51

‘A giver of land is born in our lineage; he will deliver us across!’
3.2.34.52
bahubhirbahudhā bhuktā rājabhiḥ pṛthivī tviyam ..
This earth has been enjoyed by many kings in many ways;

to whomever the land belongs at any time, to him belongs the fruit at that time.
3.2.34.54
ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi svarge vasati bhūmidaḥ ..
The giver of land dwells in heaven for sixty thousand years;

and being cut with a knife, he screams with a loud sound.
3.2.34.60
yamadūtairmahāghorairbrahmavṛttivilopakaḥ ..
The destroyer of a brahmin’s livelihood [is tormented] by the terrifying messengers of Yama;
3.2.34.61
evaṃvidhairmahāduṣṭaiḥ pīḍyaṃte te mahāgaṇaiḥ .. 29 ..
they are tormented by such very wicked, great hosts.
3.2.34.62
tatastiryaktvamāpnoti yoniṃ vā rākṣasīṃ śunīm ..
Then he obtains an animal state, or the womb of a rākṣasa, a bitch,
3.2.34.63
vyālīṃ śṛgālīṃ paiśācīṃ mahābhūtabhayaṃkarīm .. 3.2.34.30 ..
a female serpent, a female jackal, a piśāca woman, terrifying to great spirits.
3.2.34.64
bhūmeraṃgulahartā hi sa kathaṃ pāpamācaret ..
How could he who seizes even a finger's breadth of land commit [more] sin?
3.2.34.65
bhūmeraṃguladātā ca sa kathaṃ puṇyamācaret .. 31 ..
And how could he who gives a finger's breadth of land acquire [greater] merit?
3.2.34.66
aśvamedhasahasrāṇāṃ rājasūyaśatasya ca ..
The fruit of a thousand horse sacrifices and a hundred royal consecrations,
3.2.34.67
kanyāśatapradānasya phalaṃ prāpnoti bhūmidaḥ .. 32 ..

āyuryaśaḥ sukhaṃ prajñā dharmo dhānyaṃ dhanaṃ jayaḥ ..
Longevity, fame, happiness, wisdom, dharma, grain, wealth, and victory,
3.2.34.69
saṃtānaṃ varddhate nityaṃ bhūmidaḥ sukhamaśmute .. 33 ..
and lineage constantly increase; the giver of land enjoys happiness. // 33
3.2.34.70
bhūmeraṃgulamekaṃ tu ye haraṃti khalā narāḥ ..
Those wicked men who seize even an inch of land

become black serpents living in dry tree hollows
3.2.34.72
kṛṣṇasarpāḥ prajāyaṃte dattadāyāpahārakāḥ .. 34 ..
in waterless, barren forests—such stealers of given inheritances. // 34
3.2.34.73
taḍāgānāṃ sahasreṇa aśvamedhaśatena vā ..
By [digging] a thousand reservoirs, or by a hundred horse sacrifices,
3.2.34.74
gavāṃ koṭipradānena bhūmiharttā viśudhyati .. 35 ..
or by donating ten million cows, the stealer of land is purified. // 35
3.2.34.75
yānīha dattāni punardhanāni dānāni dharmārthayaśaskarāṇi ..
What wealths given here, gifts bringing dharma, wealth, and renown,
3.2.34.76
audāryato vipraniveditāni ko nāma sādhuḥ punarādadīta .. 36 ..
bestowed through generosity upon brahmins—what good person would take them back? // 36
3.2.34.77
caladaladalalīlācaṃcale jīvaloke tṛṇalavalaghusāre sarvasaṃsārasaukhye ..
In a living world fickle as the quivering play of a trembling leaf, where all worldly happiness has the slight worth of a blade of grass,
3.2.34.78
apaharati durāśaḥ śāsanaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ narakagahanagarttāvartapātotsuko yaḥ ..37 ..
the ill-intentioned man seizes the grant of brahmins, eager to plunge into the whirling pit of deep hell. // 37
3.2.34.79
ye pāsyaṃti mahībhujaḥ kṣitimimāṃ yāsyaṃti bhuktvākhilāṃ no yātā na tu yāti yāsyati na vā kenāpi sārddhaṃ dharā..
Those kings who shall protect this earth, shall depart after enjoying it entirely; the earth has not gone, does not go, and will not go with anyone.

3.2.34.81
ekaiva bhaginī loke sarveṣāmeva bhūbhujām ..
In this world there is only one sister common to all kings:

na bhojyā na karagrāhyā vipradattā vasuṃdharā .. 39 ..
the earth given to brahmins; she is not to be enjoyed, nor are taxes to be taken from her. // 39

dattvā bhūmiṃ bhāvinaḥ pārthiveśānbhūyobhūyo yācate rāmacandraḥ ..

made of copper, inscribed with golden letters, lawful, the ornament of dharma, // 43

naivedyaṃ kurvate nityaṃ bhaktipūrvaṃ dvijottamāḥ..
The excellent twice-born always offer food with devotion,

Vyāsa said:
3.2.34.106
iti kṛtvā tato rāmaḥ kṛtakṛtyamamanyata ..
Having done this, Rāma then considered himself accomplished in his purpose.
3.2.34.107
pradakṣiṇīkṛtya tadā praṇamya ca dvijānbahūn .. 51 ..
Circumambulating and bowing down to the many brahmins, // 51

Indeed, without doubt, you must remain right here for that long.

O brahmins, whenever kings on earth do not respect the charter, // 54
3.2.34.114
athavā vaṇijaḥ śūrā madamāyāvimohitāḥ ..
or merchants, or warriors, deluded by pride and illusion,
