stotreṇaivāmunā tuṣṭo vāyuputro'bravīdvacaḥ ..
Pleased by this very hymn of praise, the son of the wind spoke [these] words:
3.2.37.19
śṛṇudhvaṃ hi varaṃ viprā yadvo manasi rocate .. 9 ..
“Hear, O brahmins: whatever boon pleases your mind [shall be yours]!”
3.2.37.20
.. viprā ūcuḥ .. ..
The brahmins said:
3.2.37.21
yadi tuṣṭo'si deveśa rāmājñāpālaka prabho ..
“If you are pleased, O lord of the gods, O master who obeys Rāma's command,
3.2.37.22
svarūpaṃ darśayasvādya laṃkāyāṃ yatkṛtaṃ hare .. 3.2.37.10 ..
show today your true form, that which was assumed in Laṅkā, O Hari!
3.2.37.23
tathā vidhvaṃsavādya tvaṃ rājānaṃ pāpakāriṇam ..
And likewise, destroy today the sinful king,
3.2.37.24
duṣṭaṃ kumārapālaṃ hi āmaṃ caiva na saṃśayaḥ .. 11 ..
the wicked Kumārapāla and Āma without doubt!

.. hanumānuvāca .. ..
Hanumān said:
3.2.37.32
matsvarūpaṃ mahākāyaṃ na cakṣurviṣayaṃ kalau ..
"My true form, possessing a vast body, cannot be an object of sight in the Kali age.
3.2.37.33
tejorāśimayaṃ divyamiti jānaṃtu vāḍavāḥ .. 15 ..
Let the brahmins know this: it is divine, composed of a mass of fiery energy.
3.2.37.34
tathāpi parayā bhaktyā prasanno'haṃ stavādibhiḥ ..
Even so, pleased by your supreme devotion through praises and the like,
3.2.37.35
vasanāṃtaritaṃ rūpaṃ darśayiṣyāmi paśyata .. 16 ..
I will show my form veiled by a garment. Behold!"
3.2.37.36
evamuktāstadā viprāḥ sarvakāryasamutsukāḥ ..
Having been spoken to thus, the brahmins, eager for every task,
3.2.37.37
mahārūpaṃ mahākāyaṃ mahāpucchasamākulam .. 17 ..
seeing that immense form, possessing a vast body, endowed with an enormous tail,
3.2.37.38
dṛṣṭvā divyasvarūpaṃ taṃ hanumaṃtaṃ jaharṣire ..
that divine true form of Hanumān, rejoiced.
3.2.37.39
kathaṃciddhairyamālaṃbya viprāḥ procuḥ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ .. 18 ..
Somehow summoning their courage, the brahmins spoke very slowly:
3.2.37.40
yathoktaṃ tu purāṇeṣu tattathaiva hi dṛśyate ..
"Just as it is described in the Purāṇas, exactly so indeed is it seen."
3.2.37.41
uvāca sa hi tānsarvāṃścakṣuḥ pracchādya saṃsthitān .. 19 ..
He indeed spoke to all of them, who stood covering their eyes:
3.2.37.42
phalānīmāni gṛhṇīdhvaṃ bhakṣaṇārthamṛṣīśvarāḥ ..
"Take these fruits for food, O lords among seers!
3.2.37.43
ebhistu bhakṣitairviprā hyatitṛptirbhaviṣyati .. 3.2.37.20 ..
When these are eaten, O brahmins, there will be extreme satisfaction.
3.2.37.44
dharmāraṇyaṃ vinā vādya kṣudhā vaḥ śāmyati dhuvam .. 21 ..
Even without Dharmāraṇya, today your hunger will surely be appeased."
3.2.37.45
.. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
3.2.37.46
kṣudhākrāṃtaistadā vipraiḥ kṛtaṃ vai phalabhakṣaṇam ..
Then the eating of the fruits was done by the brahmins overcome with hunger.
3.2.37.47
amṛtaprāśanamiva tṛptisteṣāmajāyata .. 22 ..
Satisfaction arose for them, as if from drinking nectar.
3.2.37.48
na tṛṣā naiva kṣuccaiva viprāḥ saṃkliṣṭamānasāḥ ..
Neither thirst nor hunger [remained]; the brahmins whose minds had been afflicted,
3.2.37.49
abhavansahasā rājanvismayāviṣṭacetasaḥ ..23..
suddenly became possessed of wonder in their hearts, O king.
3.2.37.50
tataḥ prāhāṃjanīputraḥ saṃprāpte hi kalau dvijāḥ ..
Then the son of Añjanā said: "When the Kali age has arrived, O twice-born,
3.2.37.51
nāgamiṣyāmyahaṃ tatra muktvā rāmeśvaraṃ śivam .. 24 ..
I shall not go there, except to Śiva, Rāmeśvara.
3.2.37.52
abhijñānaṃ mayā dattaṃ gṛhītvā tatra gacchata ..
Take this token given by me and go there;
3.2.37.53
tathyametatpratīyeta tasya rājño na saṃśayaḥ .. 25 ..
this will be recognized as the truth by that king, no doubt."
3.2.37.54
ityuktvā bāhumuddhṛtya bhujayorubhayorapi ..
Having spoken thus, lifting his arm from both sides,
3.2.37.55
pṛthagromāṇi saṃgṛhya cakāra puṭikādvayam .. 26 ..
and taking hairs separately, he made two packets.
3.2.37.56
bhūrjapatreṇa saṃveṣṭya te adādviprakakṣayoḥ ..
Wrapping them with birch-bark, he placed them in the armpits of a brahmin:
3.2.37.57
vāme tu vāmakakṣotthāṃ dakṣiṇotthāṃ tu dakṣiṇe .. 27 ..
in the left, the one from his left armpit, and in the right, the one from the right,
3.2.37.58
kāmadāṃ rāmabhaktasya anyeṣāṃ kṣayakāriṇīm ..
granting the desires of a devotee of Rāma, and bringing ruin to others.
3.2.37.59
uvāca ca yadā rājā brūte cihnaṃ pradīyatām .. 28 ..
And he said: "When the king says, 'Let a sign be given,'
3.2.37.60
tadā pradīyatāṃ śīghraṃ vāmakakṣodbhavā puṭī ..
then let the packet produced from the left armpit be given at once;
3.2.37.61
athavā tasya rājñastu dvāre tu puṭikāṃ kṣipa .. 29 ..
or rather, throw the packet at the door of that king.
3.2.37.62
jvālayati ca tatsainyaṃ gṛhaṃ kośaṃ tathaiva ca ..
It will burn his army, his palace, and likewise his treasury;
3.2.37.63
mahiṣyaḥ putrakāḥ sarvaṃ jvalamānaṃ bhaviṣyati .. 3.2.37.30 ..
his queens, his sons—everything will be set ablaze.
3.2.37.64
yadā tu vṛttiṃ grāmāṃśca vaṇijānāṃ baliṃ tathā ..
When, however, the livelihood, the villages, and the tribute from merchants,
3.2.37.65
pūrvaṃ sthitaṃ tu yatkiṃcittattaddāsyati vāḍavāḥ .. 31 ..
whatever previously existed, all that he gives [back], O brahmins,
3.2.37.66
likhitvā niścayaṃ kṛtvāpyatha dadyātsa pūrvavat ..
and writing it down and making a firm resolve, he gives it just as before,
3.2.37.67
karasaṃpuṭakaṃ kṛtvā praṇamecca yadā nṛpaḥ .. 32 ..
and when the king bows down making an anjali with folded hands,
3.2.37.68
saṃprāpya ca purā vṛttiṃ rāmadattāṃ dvijottamāḥ ..
having restored the former livelihood given by Rāma, O best of the twice-born,
3.2.37.69
tato dakṣiṇakakṣāsthakeśānāṃ puṭikā tviyam .. 33 ..
then let this packet of hairs from my right armpit
3.2.37.70
prakṣipyatāṃ tadā sainyaṃ purāvacca bhaviṣyati ...
be thrown down; then the army will become as before,
3.2.37.71
gṛhāṇi ca tathā kośaḥ putrapautrādayastathā .. 34 ..
and likewise the houses, the treasury, and the sons and grandsons.
3.2.37.72
vahninā mucyamānāste dṛśyaṃte tatkṣaṇāditi ..
They will be seen instantly released from the fire."
3.2.37.73
śrutvā'mṛtamayaṃ vākyaṃ hanumaṃtoditaṃ param ..35..
Hearing this supreme nectar-like word uttered by Hanumān,
3.2.37.74
alabhanta mudaṃ viprā nanṛtuḥ prajagurbhṛśam ..
the brahmins obtained joy; they danced and sang exceedingly.
3.2.37.75
jayaṃ codairayanke'pi prahasanti parasparam .. 36 ..
Some raised shouts of victory, while others laughed among one another.
3.2.37.76
pulakāṃkitasarvāṅgāḥ stuvanti ca muhurmuhuḥ ..
With all their limbs covered in horripilation, they praised him again and again;
3.2.37.77
pucchaṃ tasya ca saṃgṛhya cucuṃbuḥ kecidutsukāḥ .. 37 ..
and some, full of eagerness, seized his tail and kissed it.
3.2.37.78
brūte'nyo mama yatnena kāryaṃ niyatameva hi ..
One said: "By my effort alone was the task surely accomplished!"
3.2.37.79
anyo brūte mahābhāga mayedaṃ kṛtamityuta ...68...
Another said: "O fortunate one, this was done by me!"
3.2.37.80
tataḥ provāca hanumāṃstrirātraṃ sthīyatāmiha ..
Then Hanumān said: "Stay here for three nights,
3.2.37.81
rāmatīrthasya ca phalaṃ yathā prāpsyatha vāḍavāḥ .. 39 ..
so that you may obtain the fruit of the sacred ford of Rāma, O brahmins."
3.2.37.82
tathetyuktvātha te viprā brahmayajñaṃ pracakrire ..
Saying "So be it," those brahmins then performed the Vedic recitation;
3.2.37.83
brahmaghoṣeṇa mahatā tadvanaṃ badhiraṃ kṛtam .. 3.2.37.40 ..
by that great Vedic chant, that forest was deafened.
3.2.37.84
sthitvā trirātraṃ te viprā gamane kṛtabuddhayaḥ ..
Having stayed three nights, those brahmins, resolved on departure,
3.2.37.85
rātrau hanumato'gre ta idamūcuḥ subhaktitaḥ .. 41.. ..
said this at night before Hanumān with deep devotion:
3.2.37.86
.. brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ .. ..
The brahmins said:
3.2.37.87
vayaṃ prātargamiṣyāmo dharmāraṇyaṃ sunirmalam ..
"In the morning we shall go to the pure Dharmāraṇya.
3.2.37.88
na vismāryā vayaṃ tāta kṣamyatāṃ kṣamyatāmiti .. 42 ..
We must not be forgotten, father! Forgive us, forgive us!"
3.2.37.89
tato vāyusuto rājanparvatānmahatīṃ śilām ..
Then, O king, the son of the wind, [taking] from a mountain a great rock
3.2.37.90
bṛhatīṃ ca catuḥśālāṃ daśayojanamāyatīm .. 43 ..
that was large, square-shaped, and ten yojanas in length,
3.2.37.91
āstīrya prāha tānviprāñchilāyāṃ dvijasattamāḥ ..
spread it out and said to those brahmins: “O best of brahmins,
3.2.37.92
rakṣyamāṇā mayā viprāḥ śayīdhvaṃ vigatajvarāḥ .. 44 ..
protected by me, O brahmins, lie down free from feverish anxiety.”
3.2.37.93
iti śrutvā tataḥ sarve nidrāmāpuḥ sukhapradām ..
Having heard this, they then all went to sleep, which bestowed comfort.
3.2.37.94
evaṃ te kṛtakṛtyāstu bhūtvā suptā niśāmukhe .. .. 45 ..
Having thus fulfilled their purpose, they slept at nightfall.
3.2.37.95
kṛpāluḥ sa ca rudrātmā rāmaśāsanapālakaḥ ..
And he, compassionate, identical in spirit to Rudra, keeper of Rāma’s command,
3.2.37.96
rakṣaṇārthaṃ hi viprāṇāmatiṣṭhacca dharātale .. 46 ..
stood upon the surface of the earth for the protection of the brahmins.
3.2.37.97
.. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
3.2.37.98
arddharātre tu saṃprāpte sarve nidrāmupāgatāḥ ..
When midnight had arrived and all had fallen asleep,
3.2.37.99
tātaṃ saṃprārthayāmāsa kṛtānugrahako bhavān .. 47 ..
he petitioned his father: “May you bestow a favor:
3.2.37.100
samīraṇa dvijānetānsthānaṃ svaṃ prāpayasva bhoḥ ..
O wind, please convey these twice-born to their own place!”
3.2.37.101
tato nidrābhibhūtāṃstānvāyuputrapraṇoditaḥ .. 48 ..
Then, impelled by the son of the wind,
3.2.37.102
samuddhṛtya śilāṃ tāṃ tu pitā putreṇa bhārata ..
the father, lifting up that rock with those who were overcome by sleep, O descendant of Bharata,
3.2.37.103
viśiṣṭo yāpayāmāsa svasthānaṃ dvijasattamān .. 49 ..
the distinguished one, conveyed the best of the twice-born to their own abode.
3.2.37.104
ṣaḍbhirmāsaiśca yaḥ panthā atikrāṃto dvijātibhiḥ ..
The path that had been traversed by the twice-born in six months
3.2.37.105
tribhireva muhūrttaistu dharmāraṇyamavāptavān .. 3.2.37.50 ..
he reached Dharmāraṇya in just three muhūrtas.
3.2.37.106
bhramamāṇāṃ śilāṃ jñātvā vipra eko dvijāgrataḥ ..
Perceiving the rock moving, one brahmin before the twice-born,
3.2.37.107
vātsyagotrasamutpanno lokānsaṃgītavānkalam .. 51 ..
born in the Vātsya gotra, sang sweetly to the people.
3.2.37.108
gītāni gāyanoktāni śrutvā vismayamāyayuḥ ..
Hearing the songs sung by the singer, they were filled with amazement.
3.2.37.109
prabhāte suprasanne tu udatiṣṭhanparasparam .. 52 ..
When morning dawned very clearly, they arose together.
3.2.37.110
ūcuste vismitāḥ sarve svapno'yaṃ vātha vibhramaḥ ..
All of them, astonished, said: “Is this a dream, or is it an illusion?”
3.2.37.111
sasaṃbhramāḥ samutthāya dadṛśuḥ satyamaṃdiram .. 53 ..
Rising in agitation, they saw the abode of truth.
3.2.37.112
aṃtarbuddhyā samālokya prabhāvo vāyujasya ca ..
Reflecting in their minds, [they realized] it was the power of the son of the wind;
3.2.37.113
śrutvā vedadhvaniṃ viprāḥ paraṃ harṣamupāgatāḥ .. 54 ..
and hearing the sound of the Vedas, the brahmins attained supreme joy.
3.2.37.114
grāmīṇāśca tato lokā dṛṣṭvā tu mahatīṃ śilām ..
Then the village people, seeing that great rock,
3.2.37.115
adbhutaṃ menire sarve kimidaṃ kimidaṃ tviti .. 55 ..
all considered it a wonder, thinking: “What is this? What is this?”
3.2.37.116
gṛhegṛhe hi te lokāḥ pravadaṃti tathādbhutam ..
Indeed, in house after house, those people spoke of such a wonder:
3.2.37.117
brāhmaṇaiḥ pūryamāṇā sā śilā ca mahatī śubhā .. 56 ..
“This great, auspicious rock is filled with brahmins.
3.2.37.118
aśubhā vā śubhā vāpi na jānīmo vayaṃ kila ..
Whether it is inauspicious or auspicious, we do not know!”
3.2.37.119
saṃvadaṃte tato lokāḥ parasparamidaṃ vacaḥ .. 57 ..
Then the people exchanged these words with one another.
3.2.37.120
.. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
3.2.37.121
tato dvijānāṃ te putrāḥ pautrāścaiva samāgatāḥ ..
Then the sons and grandsons of those twice-born arrived.
3.2.37.122
ūcuste diṣṭyā bho viprā āgatāḥ pathikā dvijāḥ .. 58 ..
They said: “By good fortune, O brahmins, have the traveling twice-born arrived!”
3.2.37.123
te tu saṃtuṣṭamanasā sanmukhāḥ prayayurmudā ..
With satisfied minds, they joyfully went out to meet them.
3.2.37.124
pratyutthānābhivādābhyāṃ pariraṃbhaṇakaṃ tathā .. 59 ..
With rising to greet them, saluting them, and embracing them,
3.2.37.125
āghrāṇakādīṃśca kṛtvā yathāyogyaṃ prapūjya ca ..
kissing the crown of their heads, and honoring them appropriately,
3.2.37.126
sarvaṃ vistārya kathitaṃ śīghramāgamamātmanaḥ .. 3.2.37.60 ..
everything was recounted at length—the quickness of their arrival.
3.2.37.127
tataḥ saṃpūjya tatsarvāngaṃdhatāṃbūlakuṃkumaiḥ ..
Then, having honored them all with fragrances, betel, and saffron,
3.2.37.128
śāṃtipāṭhaṃ paṭhaṃtaste hṛṣṭā nijagṛhānyayuḥ .. 61 ..
chanting the peace prayer, they went rejoicing to their own homes.
3.2.37.129
ānaṃdāyā mahāpīṭhe prātaḥ pāṃthāḥ samutthitāḥ ..
Having risen in the morning at the great sacred site of Ānandā, the travelers
3.2.37.130
dadṛśuste mahāsthānaṃ sotkaṃṭhā harṣapūritāḥ .. 60 ..
saw the great place with eager longing, filled with joy.
3.2.37.131
āścaryaṃ paramaṃ prāpuḥ kimetatsthānamuttamam ..
They attained the highest wonder: “What is this excellent place?
3.2.37.132
ayaṃ tu dakṣiṇa dvāre śāṃtipāṭho'tra paṭhyate .. 63 ..
At this southern gate, the peace prayer is being recited here.
3.2.37.133
gṛhā ramyāḥ pradṛśyaṃte śacīpatigṛhopamāḥ ..
Charming houses are seen, like the house of the husband of Śacī.
3.2.37.134
prāsādāḥ kulamātṝṇāṃ dṛśyaṃte cāgniśobhanāḥ .. 64 ..
The mansions of the family Mothers are seen, splendid like fire.”
3.2.37.135
evaṃ bruvatsu vipreṣu mahāśaktiprapūjane ..
While the brahmins were speaking thus at the worship of the Great Śakti,
3.2.37.136
āgato brāhmaṇo'paśyattatra viprakadaṃbakam .. 65 ..
a brahmin arrived and saw the assembly of brahmins there.
3.2.37.137
harṣito bhāvitastatra yatra viprāḥ sabhāsadaḥ ..
Delighted and devoted there where the brahmins of the assembly were,
3.2.37.138
uvāva diṣṭyā bho viprā hyāgatāḥ pathikā dvijāḥ .. 66 ..
he said: “By good fortune, O brahmins, have the traveling twice-born arrived!”

harīśvarasya yadvṛttaṃ viprāgre saṃprakāśitam .. 68 ..
the account of Harīśvara was made known before the brahmins.
3.2.37.143
pathikānāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā harṣapūrṇā dvijottamāḥ ..
Hearing the words of the travelers, the best of the twice-born were filled with joy;
3.2.37.144
śāṃtipāṭhaṃ paṭhantaste hṛṣṭā nijagṛhānyayuḥ .. 69 ..
chanting the peace prayer, they went rejoicing to their own homes.
3.2.37.145
vimṛśya militāḥ prātarjyotirvidbhiḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ ..

some mounted on palanquins, riding on various conveyances.
3.2.37.149
tatpuraṃ tu samāsādya gaṃgāyāḥ śobhane taṭe ..
