3.2.38.4_61
dahyaṃte te'gninā svāminyathāhaṃ mūḍhacetanaḥ .. 34 ..
they are burned by fire, O master, just as I, whose mind is foolish, [have been burned].

svargasya caitra sopānaṃ viprā bhāgīrathī hariḥ ..
And the staircase to heaven here consists of the brahmins, the Bhāgīrathī, [and] Hari,
3.2.38.4_65
rāmanāmamahārajjvā vaikuṃṭhe yena nīyate .. 36 ..
by which one is led to Vaikuṇṭha with the great rope of Rāma's name.'
3.2.38.4_66
ityevaṃ praṇamanrājā prāṃjalirvākyamabravīt..
Thus bowing down with folded hands, the king spoke this word:
3.2.38.4_67
vahniḥ praśāmyatāṃ viprāḥ śāsanaṃ vo dadāmyaham .. 37 ..
'Let the fire be appeased, O brahmins; I grant you a charter.

dāso'smi sāṃprataṃ viprā na me vāganyathā bhavet ..
I am your servant now, O brahmins; may my word not prove false.

3.2.38.4_70
yatpāpaṃ madyapānāṃ ca suvarṇasteyināṃ tathā ..
whatever sin belongs to drinkers of liquor and likewise to thieves of gold,
3.2.38.4_71
yatpāpaṃ gurughātānāṃ tatpāpaṃ vā bhavenmama .. 39 ..
whatever sin belongs to slayers of gurus—may that sin be mine [if I fail]!
3.2.38.4_72
yaṃyaṃ ciṃtayate kāmaṃ taṃ taṃ dāsyāmyahaṃ punaḥ ..
Whatever desire one thinks of, that very thing I shall grant again.
3.2.38.4_73
viprabhaktiḥ sadā kāryā rāmabhaktistathaiva ca .. 3.2.38.40 ..
Devotion to the brahmins must always be practiced, and likewise devotion to Rāma.
3.2.38.4_74
anyathā karaṇīyaṃ me na kadāci ddvijottamāḥ .. 41 ..
Never should anything contrary be done by me, O best of the twice-born!'
3.2.38.4_75
.. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
3.2.38.4_76
tasminnavasare viprā jātā bhūpa dayālavaḥ ..
On that occasion, the brahmins became compassionate toward the king.
3.2.38.4_77
anyā yā puṭikā cāsītsā dattā śāpaśāṃtaye .. 42 ..
The other small packet which remained was given for the appeasement of the curse.
3.2.38.4_78
jīvitaṃ caiva tatsainyaṃ jātaṃ kṣipteṣu romasu ..
And when the hairs were cast, that army was restored to life.
3.2.38.4_79
diśaḥ prasannāḥ saṃjātāḥ śāṃtā digjanitasvanāḥ .. 43 ..
The quarters became clear; the sounds arising from the quarters ceased.

prajā svasthā 'bhavattatra harṣanirbharamānasā ..
The subjects there became at ease, their minds overflowing with joy.

viprājñākāriṇo lokāḥ saṃjātāśca yathā purā ..
And the people became obedient to the commands of the brahmins, just as in former times.
3.2.38.4_83
viṣṇudharmaṃ parityajya nānyaṃ jānaṃti te vṛṣam .. 45 ..
Apart from the dharma of Viṣṇu, they recognized no other dharma.
3.2.38.4_84
navīnaṃ śāsanaṃ kṛtvā pūrvavadvidhipūrvakam ..
Having issued a new royal charter according to rule, as before,
3.2.38.4_85
niṣkāsitāstu pāṣaṃḍāḥ kṛtaśāstraprayojakāḥ .. 46 ..
the heretics who had propagated fabricated treatises were expelled.
3.2.38.4_86
vedabāhyāḥ pranaṣṭāste uttamādhamamadhyamāḥ ..
Those who stood outside the Vedas perished—the high, the low, and the middling.
3.2.38.4_87
ṣaṭtriṃśacca sahasrāṇi ye'bhūvangobhujāḥ purā .. 47 ..
The thirty-six thousand who formerly had been Gobhujas—
3.2.38.4_88
teṣāṃ madhyāttu saṃjātā aḍhavījā vaṇigjanāḥ ..
among them arose the merchants of Aḍhavīja lineage.
3.2.38.4_89
śuśrūṣārthaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ rājñā sarve nirūpitāḥ .. 48 ..
All of them were appointed by the king to the service of the brahmins.
3.2.38.4_90
sadācārāḥ sunipuṇā devabrāhmaṇapūjakāḥ ..
Practicing good conduct, highly skilled, worshippers of gods and brahmins,
3.2.38.4_91
tyaktvā pākhaṇḍamārgaṃ tu viṣṇubhaktiparāstu te .. 49 ..
having abandoned the heretical path, they were devoted to Viṣṇu.
3.2.38.4_92
jāhnavītīramāsādya traividyebhyo dadau nṛpaḥ ..
Approaching the bank of the Jāhnavī, the king granted [gifts] to the masters of the three Vedas.
3.2.38.4_93
śāsanaṃ tu yadā dattaṃ teṣāṃ vai bhaktipūrvakam .. 3.2.38.50 ..
Indeed, when the charter was given to them with devotion,
3.2.38.4_94
sthānadharmātpracalitā vāḍavāste samāgatāḥ ..
those brahmins who had deviated from the duty of their place arrived.
3.2.38.4_95
nṛpo vijñāpito vipraistairevaṃ kleśakāribhiḥ .. 51 ..
The king was petitioned by those trouble-making brahmins as follows:
3.2.38.4_96
ye tyaktavāco vipreṃdrāstānniḥsāraya bhūpate ..
'O king, expel those eminent brahmins who have broken their word!'
3.2.38.4_97
parasparaṃ vivādāstu saṃjātā dattavṛttaye .. 52 ..
Mutual disputes arose concerning the granted livelihood.
3.2.38.4_98
nyāya pradaśanārthaṃ ca kāritāstu sabhāsadaḥ ..
And the members of the assembly were summoned to administer justice.
3.2.38.4_99
hastākṣareṣu dṛṣṭeṣu pṛthakpṛthakprapāditam .. 53 ..
When the signatures were examined, each was proved separately.
3.2.38.4_100
etacchrutvā tato rājā tulādānaṃ cakāra ha ..
Hearing this, the king then indeed performed the gift of one's weight [in gold].
3.2.38.4_101
dīyamāne tadā dāne cāturvidyā babhāṣire .. 54 ..
While the gift was being given, the masters of the four Vedas spoke:
3.2.38.4_102
asmābhirhāritā jātiḥ kathaṃ kurmaḥ pratigraham ..
'Our caste has been lost by us; how can we accept this gift?'
3.2.38.4_103
nivāritāstu te sarve sthānānmoherakā dvijāḥ ..55..
Then all those twice-born Moherakas were expelled from the place,
3.2.38.4_104
daśapaṃca sahasrāṇi vedavedāṃgapāragāḥ ..
fifteen thousand [in number], who had mastered the Vedas and their auxiliary sciences.
3.2.38.4_105
tatastena tadā rājanrājñā rāmānuvartinā .. 56 ..
Thereupon, O king, by that monarch who followed Rāma,
3.2.38.4_106
āhūtā vāḍavāṃstāstu jñātibhedaṃ cakāra saḥ ..
those brahmins were summoned, and he established a division of castes.
3.2.38.4_107
trayīvidyā vāḍavā ye setubaṃdhaṃ prati prabhum .. 57 ..
Those brahmins versed in the three Vedas who had gone to the Lord toward Setubandha
3.2.38.4_108
gatāste vṛttibhājaḥ syurnānye vṛttyabhibhāginaḥ ..
should receive the livelihood; the others should have no share in the livelihood.
3.2.38.4_109
tatra naiva gatā ye vai cāturvidyatvamāgatāḥ .. 58 ..
Those who did not go there attained the status of masters of the four Vedas.
3.2.38.4_110
vaṇigbhirna ca saṃbaṃdho na vivāhaśca taiḥ saha ..
There was to be no connection with merchants, nor marriage with them,
3.2.38.4_111
grāmavṛttau na saṃbaṃdho jñātibhede kṛte sati ..59..
nor any connection in the village livelihood, once the caste division was made.
3.2.38.4_112
dvijabhaktiparāḥ śūdrāḥ ye pākhaṃḍairna lopitāḥ..
The Śūdras devoted to serving twice-borns, who were not corrupted by heretics,
3.2.38.4_113
jaina dharmātparāvṛttāste gobhūjāstathottamāḥ .. 3.2.38.60 ..
and who turned away from the Jaina faith, became excellent landowners.
3.2.38.4_114
ye ca pākhaṃḍaniratā rāmaśāsanalopakāḥ ..
And those who were devoted to heresy and broke the royal decree of Rāma,
3.2.38.4_115
sarve viprāstathā śūdrā pratibaṃdhena yojitāḥ .. 61 ..
all those brahmins as well as Śūdras were placed under restraint.
3.2.38.4_116
satyapratijñāṃ kurvāṇāstatrasthāḥ sukhino'bhavan ..
Those who kept true to their vows remained there and were happy.
3.2.38.4_117
cāturvidyā bahirgrāme rājñā tena nivāsitāḥ ..62..
The Cāturvidyas were made to dwell outside the village by that king,
3.2.38.4_118
yathā rāmo na kupyeta tathā kāryaṃ mayā dhruvama..
[thinking,] "I must certainly act in such a way that Rāma is not angered."
3.2.38.4_119
parāṅmukhā ye rāmasya sanmukhānugatāḥ kila .. 63 ..
Indeed, those who turned their backs on Rāma but followed the virtuous
3.2.38.4_120
cāturvidyāste vijñeyā vṛttibāhyāḥ kṛtāstadā ..
are to be known as Cāturvidyas; they were then deprived of their livelihood.
3.2.38.4_121
kṛtakṛtyastadā jāto rājā kumārapālakaḥ .. 64 ..
Then King Kumārapāla, having accomplished his duty,
3.2.38.4_122
viprāṇāṃ purataḥ prāha praśrayeṇa vacastadā ..
spoke words with humility before the brahmins:
3.2.38.4_123
grāmavṛttirna me luptā etadvai devanirmitam .. 65 ..
"The village livelihood was not abolished by me; indeed, this was ordained by fate.
3.2.38.4_124
svayaṃ kṛtāparādhānāṃ doṣo kasya na dīyate ..
When men commit offences themselves, to whom should blame not be assigned?
3.2.38.4_125
yathā vane kāṣṭhavarṣādvahniḥ syāddaivayogataḥ .. 66 ..
Just as in a forest, fire may arise from the friction of dry wood by the decree of fate,
3.2.38.4_126
bhavadbhistu paṇaḥ prokto hyabhijñānasya hetave ..
so was a condition made by you for the sake of a token of recognition.
3.2.38.4_127
rāmasya śāsanaṃ kṛtvā vāyuputrasya hetave .. 67 ..
Having issued the decree of Rāma for the sake of the son of the wind-god,
3.2.38.4_128
vyāvṛttā vāḍavā yūyaṃ sa doṣaḥ kasya dīyate ..
you brahmins turned away—to whom is that fault to be attributed?
3.2.38.4_129
avasāne hariṃ smṛtvā mahāpāpayuto'pi vā .. 68 ..
Even if laden with great sin, remembering Hari at the moment of death,
3.2.38.4_130
viṣṇulokaṃ vrajatyāśu saṃśayastu kathaṃ bhavet ..
a man quickly goes to the world of Viṣṇu; how could there be any doubt about this?
3.2.38.4_131
mahatpuṇyodaye nṝṇāṃ buddhiḥ śreyasi jāyate .. 69 ..
When great merit arises, men's minds are turned toward the highest good;
3.2.38.4_132
pāpasyodayakāle ca viparītā hi sā bhavet ..
and at the time sin arises, it becomes quite the opposite.
3.2.38.4_133
sakṛtpālayate yastu dharmeṇaitajjagattrayam .. .. 3.2.38.70 ..
He who continually protects these three worlds by means of dharma,
3.2.38.4_134
yoṃtarātmā ca bhūtānāṃ saṃśayastatra no hitaḥ ..
and who is the inner Self of living beings—doubt concerning him is not beneficial.
