take refuge in the Lord of All, the Conqueror of Death, the Husband of Umā. 73
3.3.10.149
tāvanmṛtyubhayaṃ ghoraṃ tāvajjanmajarābhayam ..
Terrifying fear of death persists only so long, fear of birth and old age persists only so long,
3.3.10.150
yāvanno yāti śaraṇaṃ dehī śivapadāṃbujam .. 74 ..
as an embodied soul does not take refuge in Śiva's lotus feet. 74
3.3.10.151
anubhūyeha duḥkhāni saṃsāre bhṛśadāruṇe ..
Having experienced sorrows here in this exceedingly harsh saṃsāra,
3.3.10.152
mano yadā viyujyeta tadā dhyeyo maheśvaraḥ .. 75 ..
when the mind becomes detached, then the Great Lord is to be meditated upon. 75
3.3.10.153
manasā pibataḥ puṃsaḥ śivadhyānarasāmṛtam ..
For a man who drinks with his mind the nectar of meditation on Śiva,
3.3.10.154
bhūyastṛṣṇā na jāyeta saṃsāraviṣayāsave .. 76 ..
thirst for the intoxicating liquor of worldly objects does not arise again. 76
3.3.10.155
vimuktaṃ sarvasaṃgaiśca mano vairāgyayaṃtritam ..
When the mind, freed from all attachments and restrained by dispassion,
3.3.10.156
yadā śivapade magnaṃ tadā nāsti punarbhavaḥ .. 77 ..
is submerged in Śiva's abode, then there is no rebirth. 77
3.3.10.157
tasmādidaṃ mano bhadre śivadhyānaikasādhanam ..
Therefore, O auspicious lady, this mind, which is the sole means for meditation on Śiva,
3.3.10.158
śokamohasamāviṣṭaṃ mā kuruṣva śivaṃ bhaja .. 78 ..
do not let it be overwhelmed by sorrow and delusion; worship Śiva! 78
3.3.10.159
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
3.3.10.160
itthaṃ sānunayaṃ rājñī bodhitā śivayoginā ..
Thus gently instructed by the Śaiva yogin,
3.3.10.161
pratyācaṣṭa gurostasya praṇamya caraṇāṃ bujam .. 79 ..
the queen bowed to the lotus feet of that guru and replied: 79
3.3.10.162
.. rājñyuvāca .. ..
The queen said:
3.3.10.163
bhagavanmṛtaputrāyāstyaktāyāḥ priyabandhubhiḥ ..
O venerable one, whose son is dead, who has been abandoned by dear kinsmen,
3.3.10.164
mahārogāturāyā me kā gatirmaraṇaṃ vinā .. 3.3.10.80 ..
and who is tormented by a severe disease—what recourse is there for me without death? 80
3.3.10.165
ato'haṃ martumicchāmi sahaiva śiśunā'munā ..
Therefore, I wish to die together with this child.
3.3.10.166
kṛtārthāhaṃ yadadya tvāmapaśyaṃ maraṇonmukhī .. 81 ..
I have attained my goal in that today, facing death, I have seen you. 81
3.3.10.167
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
3.3.10.168
iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā śivayogī dayānidhiḥ ..
Having heard her words, the Śaiva yogin, an ocean of compassion,
3.3.10.169
pūrvopakāraṃ saṃsmṛtya mṛtasyāṃtikamāyayau .. 82 ..
remembering her former benefaction, approached the dead child. 82
3.3.10.170
sa tadā bhasma saṃgṛhya śivamantrābhimaṃtritam ..
Then, taking sacred ash consecrated with the mantras of Śiva,
3.3.10.171
vidīrṇe tanmukhe kṣiptvā mṛtaṃ prāṇairayojayat .. 83 ..
he cast it into his open mouth and reunited the dead child with life-breaths. 83
3.3.10.172
sa bālaḥ saṃgataḥ prāṇaiḥ śanairunmīlya locane ..
Reunited with life-breaths, the child slowly opened his eyes,
3.3.10.173
prāptapūrvendriyabalo ruroda stanyakāṃkṣayā .. 84 ..
regained the former strength of his senses, and wept, craving breast milk. 84
3.3.10.174
mṛtasya punarutthānaṃ vīkṣya bālasya vismitāḥ ..
Seeing the resurrection of the dead boy, all the people were amazed,
3.3.10.175
janā mumudire sarve nagareṣu purogamāḥ ..85..
and all the citizens leading the way in the cities rejoiced. 85
3.3.10.176
athānaṃdabharā rājñī vihvalonmattalocanā ..
Then the queen, overflowing with joy, her eyes bewildered and maddened,
3.3.10.177
jagrāha tanayaṃ śīghraṃ bāṣpavyākulalocanā ..86..
quickly grasped her son, her eyes agitated with tears. 86
3.3.10.178
upaguhya tadā tanvī paramānaṃdanirvṛtā ..
Embracing him then, the slender woman, filled with supreme bliss,
3.3.10.179
na vedātmānamanyaṃ vā suṣupteva pariśramāt .. 87 ..
knew neither herself nor anyone else, as if asleep from exhaustion. 87
3.3.10.180
punaśca ṛṣabho yogī tayormātṛkumārayoḥ ..
And once again, the yogin Ṛṣabha wiped the bodies of the mother and child,
3.3.10.181
viṣavraṇayutaṃ dehaṃ bhasmanaiva parāmṛśat .. 88 ..
which were covered with poisonous sores, with sacred ash alone. 88
3.3.10.182
tau ca tadbhasmanā spṛṣṭau prāptadivyakalevarau ..
And touched by that sacred ash, the two obtained celestial bodies
3.3.10.183
devānāṃ sadṛśaṃ rūpaṃ dadhatuḥ kāṃtibhūṣitam.. 89 ..
and bore a form resembling that of the gods, adorned with radiant beauty. 89
3.3.10.184
saṃprāpte tridivaiśvarye yatsukhaṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ..
Whatever happiness is attained by those of meritorious deeds upon obtaining the sovereignty of heaven,
3.3.10.185
tasmācchataguṇaṃ prāpa sā rājñī sukhamuttamam .. 3.3.10.90 ..
a hundred times greater than that supreme happiness did that queen obtain. 90
3.3.10.186
tāṃ pādayornipatitāmṛṣabhaḥ premavihvalaḥ ..
As she fell at his feet, Ṛṣabha, overwhelmed with affection,
3.3.10.187
utthāpyāśvāsayāmāsa duḥkhairmuktāmuvāca ha .. 91 ..
raised her up, consoled her who was now freed from sorrow, and spoke:
3.3.10.188
ayi vatse mahārājñi jīvatvaṃ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ..
“Ah, my child, great queen! May you live for eternal years!
3.3.10.189
yāvajjīvasi lokesminna tāvatprāpsyase jarām .. 92 ..
As long as you live in this world, so long will you not suffer old age.
3.3.10.190
eṣa te tanayaḥ sādhvi bhadrāyuriti nāmataḥ ..
This son of yours, virtuous lady, named Bhadrāyus,
3.3.10.191
khyātiṃ yāsyati lokeṣu nijaṃ rājyamavāpsyati .. .. 93 ..
shall attain fame throughout the worlds and shall recover his own kingdom.
3.3.10.192
asya vaiśyasya sadane tāvattiṣṭha śucismite ..
Dwell here in the house of this merchant, O lady of pure smiles,
3.3.10.193
yāvadeṣa kumāraste prāptavidyo bhaviṣyati .. 94 ..
until this prince of yours has mastered the sciences.”
3.3.10.194
sūta uvāca.. .. ..
Sūta said:
3.3.10.195
iti tāmṛṣabho yogī taṃ ca rājakumārakam ..
Having thus revived the queen and the young prince
3.3.10.196
saṃjīvya bhasmavīryeṇa yayau deśānyathepsitān.. 95 ..
by the power of the holy ash, Ṛṣabha the yogin departed to the lands of his choice.
3.3.10.197
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmottarakhaṇḍe bhadrāyvākhyāne ṛṣabhayoginā bhadrāyujīvanaṃ nāma daśamo'dhyāyaḥ .. .. 10 ..
Thus ends the tenth chapter, titled “The Reviving of Bhadrāyus by Ṛṣabha the Yogin,” in the narrative of Bhadrāyus in the Brahmottarakhaṇḍa of the third [part of the] venerable Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
