3.3.20.114
rakṣaṇīyaṃ tvayā kāṃte tasya hānirmṛtirmama .. 54 ..
you must protect it, my lovely one: its loss will be my death.”

evamastviti sā kāṃtā liṃgamādāya ratnajam ..
Saying “So be it,” the lovely woman took the jewel-born liṅga,
3.3.20.116
nāṭyamaṇḍapikāstaṃbhe nidhāya prāviśadgṛham .. 55 ..
placed it on a pillar of the dance pavilion, and entered the house.
3.3.20.117
sā tena saṃgatā rātrau vaiśyena viṭadharmiṇā ..
United that night with that vaiśya behaving like a paramour,
3.3.20.118
sukhaṃ suṣvāpa paryaṃke mṛdutalpopaśobhite .. 56 ..
she slept happily upon a couch adorned with a soft mattress.
3.3.20.119
tato niśīthasamaye nāṭyamaṇḍapikāṃtare ..
Then, at midnight, inside the dance pavilion,
3.3.20.120
akasmādutthito vahnistameva sahasāvṛṇot .. 57 ..
a fire suddenly arose and quickly enveloped it.
3.3.20.121
maṇḍape dahyamāne tu sahasotthāya saṃbhramāt ..
As the pavilion was burning, rising up in great agitation,
3.3.20.122
sā veśyā markaṭaṃ tatra mocayāmāsa baṃdhanāt .. 58 ..
the courtesan released the monkey from its bond there.
3.3.20.123
sa markaṭo muktabaṃdhaḥ kukkuṭena sahāmunā ..
That monkey, freed from bondage, together with that rooster,
3.3.20.124
bhīto dūraṃ pradudrāva vidhūyāgnikaṇānbahūn .. 59 ..
fled far away in terror, shaking off many sparks of fire.
3.3.20.125
staṃbhena saha nirdagdhaṃ talliṃgaṃ śakalīkṛtam ..
The liṅga was consumed along with the pillar and shattered to pieces;
3.3.20.126
dṛṣṭvā veśyā ca vaiśyaśca duraṃtaṃ duḥkhamāpatuḥ .. 3.3.20.60 ..
seeing it, the courtesan and the vaiśya suffered boundless grief.
3.3.20.127
dṛṣṭvā prāṇasamaṃ liṃgaṃ dagdhaṃ vaiśyapatistathā ..
Seeing the liṅga—equal to his life—burned, the vaiśya husband likewise,
3.3.20.128
svayamapyāptanirvedo maraṇāya matiṃ dadhau .. 61 ..
having fallen into deep despondency, set his mind on death.
3.3.20.129
nirvedadānnitarāṃ khedādvaiśyastāmāha duḥkhitām ..
From deep world-weariness and utter distress, the vaiśya said to that sorrowful woman:
3.3.20.130
śivaliṃge tu nirbhinne nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe .. 62 ..
“Since the Śiva-liṅga is broken to pieces, I do not wish to live.
3.3.20.131
citāṃ kāraya me bhadre tava bhṛtyairbalādhikaiḥ ..
O auspicious one, have a funeral pyre prepared for me by your strong servants;
3.3.20.132
śive manaḥ samāveśya praviśāmi hutāśanam .. 63 ..
fixing my mind on Śiva, I will enter the fire.
3.3.20.133
yadi brahmeṃdraviṣṇvādyā vārayeyuḥ sametya mām ..
Even if Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, and the others should assemble and forbid me,
3.3.20.134
tathāpyasminkṣaṇe dhīraḥ praviśyāgniṃ tyajāmyasūn .. 64 ..
even so, resolute at this very moment, I will enter the fire and give up my life.”
3.3.20.135
tamevaṃ dṛḍhabaṃdhaṃ sā vijñāya bahuduḥkhitā ..
Realizing his firm resolve, deeply grieved,
3.3.20.136
svabhṛtyaiḥ kārayāmāsa citāṃ svanagarādbahiḥ .. 65 ..
she had a pyre built by her servants outside her city.
3.3.20.137
tataḥ sa vaiśyaḥ śivabhaktipūtaḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya samiddhamagnim ..
Then that vaiśya, purified by devotion to Śiva, circumambulated the blazing fire; / resolute, he entered [it] as people watched, and the young woman was seized with remorse.
3.3.20.138
viveśa paśyatsu janeṣu dhīraḥ sā cānutāpaṃ yuvatī prapede .. 66 ..
Then that sorrowful woman, recollecting the immaculate dharma,
3.3.20.139
atha sā duḥkhitā nārī smṛtvā dharmaṃ sunirmalam ..
looked upon all her kinsmen and spoke these mournful words:
3.3.20.140
sarvānbandhūnsamīkṣyaiva babhāṣe karuṇaṃ vacaḥ .. 67 ..
“Taking the jewel bracelet, I uttered the truth:
3.3.20.141
ratnakaṃkaṇamādāya mayā satyamudāhṛtam ..
‘For three days I am agreed to be the wife of this vaiśya.’
3.3.20.142
dinatrayamahaṃ patnī vaiśyasyāmuṣya saṃmatā.. 68..
Because of an act done by me, this vaiśya who observed the vow of Śiva is dead;
3.3.20.143
karmaṇā matkṛtenāyaṃ mṛto vaiśyaḥ śivavratī.
tasmādahaṃ pravekṣyāmi sahānena hutāśanam ..
therefore, I will enter the fire along with him.
3.3.20.144
sadharmacāriṇītyuktaṃ satyametaddhi paśyatha .. 69 ..
I said, ‘I shall be a partner in dharma’—behold this truth!
3.3.20.145
satyena prītimāyāṃti devāstribhuvaneśvarāḥ ..
By truth the gods, the lords of the three worlds, are pleased;
3.3.20.146
satyāsaktiḥ paro dharmaḥ satye sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam .. 3.3.20.70 ..
devotion to truth is the highest dharma; upon truth everything is established.”
3.3.20.147
satyena svargamokṣau ca nāsatyena parā gatiḥ ..
By truth come heaven and liberation, and by untruth the supreme state is not [attained].
3.3.20.148
tasmāsatyaṃ samāśritya pravekṣyāmi hutāśanam .. 71 ..
Therefore, taking refuge in truth, I shall enter the fire.”
3.3.20.149
iti sā dṛḍhanirbaṃdhā vāryamāṇāpi baṃdhubhiḥ ..
Thus with firm resolve, although dissuaded by her kinsfolk,
3.3.20.150
satyalopabhayānnārī prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ mano dadhe .. 72 ..
the woman set her mind to giving up her life out of fear of abandoning truth.
3.3.20.151
sarvasvaṃ śivabhaktebhyo dattvā dhyātvā sadāśivam ..
Having given all her possessions to the devotees of Śiva and meditated upon Sadāśiva,
3.3.20.152
tamagniṃ triḥ parikramya pradeśābhimukhī sthitā .. 73 ..
she circumambulated the fire three times and stood facing the place [of sacrifice].
3.3.20.153
tāṃ pataṃtīṃ samiddhe'gnau svapadārpitamānasām ..
As she was falling into the kindled fire, with her mind fixed on his abode,
3.3.20.154
vārayāmāsa viśvātmā prādurbhūtaḥ śivaḥ svayam .. 74 ..
Śiva himself, the self of all, manifested and held her back.
3.3.20.155
sā taṃ vilokyākhiladeva devaṃ trilocanaṃ candrakalāvataṃsam ..
Beholding that God of all gods, the three-eyed one adorned with the crescent moon,
3.3.20.156
śaśāṃkasūryānalakoṭibhāsaṃ stabdheva bhīteva tathaiva tasthau .. 75 ..
radiant as ten million moons, suns, and fires, she stood as though petrified, as though terrified.
3.3.20.157
tāṃ vihvalāṃ paritrastāṃ vepamānāṃ jaḍī kṛtām ..
Comforting her who was distraught, frightened, trembling, and stunned,
3.3.20.158
samāśvāsya galadbāṣpāṃ kare gṛhyābravīdvacaḥ .. 76 ..
with tears falling [from her eyes], he took her by the hand and spoke these words:
3.3.20.159
.. śiva uvāca .. ..
Śiva said:
3.3.20.160
satyaṃ dharmaṃ ca te dhairyaṃ bhaktiṃ ca mayi niścalām ..
“In order to test your truthfulness, your righteousness, your steadfastness, and your unwavering devotion to me,
3.3.20.161
nirīkṣituṃ tvatsakāśaṃ vaiśyo bhūtvāhamāgataḥ .. 77 ..
I came into your presence disguised as a merchant.
3.3.20.162
māyayāgniṃ samutthāpya dagdhavānnāṭyamaṃḍapam ..
Having magically raised a fire, I burnt down the theater pavilion,
3.3.20.163
dagdhaṃ kṛtvā ratnaliṃgaṃ pravṛṣṭosmi hutāśanam .. .. 78 ..
and making the jewel liṅga appear burnt, I entered the fire.
3.3.20.164
veśyāḥ kaitavakāriṇyaḥ svairiṇyo janavaṃcakāḥ ..
Courtesans are deceitful, self-willed, and swindlers of men;
3.3.20.165
sā tvaṃ satyamanusmṛtya praviṣṭāgniṃ mayā saha .. 79 ..
yet you, remembering truth, have entered the fire with me.
3.3.20.166
ataste saṃpradāsyāmi bhogāṃstridaśadurlabhān ..
Therefore, I shall grant you pleasures difficult even for the gods to attain,
3.3.20.167
āyuśca paramaṃ dīrghamārogyaṃ ca prajonnatim ..
an exceedingly long lifespan, health, and the prosperity of offspring.
3.3.20.168
yadyadicchasi suśroṇi tattadeva dadāmi te .. 3.3.20.80 ..
Whatever you desire, O fair-hipped woman, that very thing I grant to you.”
3.3.20.169
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
3.3.20.170
iti bruvati gaurīśe sā veśyā pratyabhāṣata .. 81 ..
As the lord of Gaurī spoke thus, the courtesan replied:
3.3.20.171
.. veśyovāca .. ..
The courtesan said:
3.3.20.172
na me vāṃchāsti bhogeṣu bhūmau svarge rasātale ..
“I have no desire for pleasures on earth, in heaven, or in the underworld.
3.3.20.173
tava pādāṃbujasparśādanyatkiṃcinna vai vṛṇe .. 82 ..
Other than the touch of your lotus feet, I choose nothing at all.
3.3.20.174
ete bhṛtyāśca dāsyaśca ye cānye mama bāṃdhavāḥ ..
These servants, maidservants, and whichever other relatives I have,
3.3.20.175
sarve tvadarcanaparāstvayi saṃnyastavṛttayaḥ .. 83 ..
are all devoted to your worship, their livelihoods dedicated to you.
3.3.20.176
sarvānetānmayā sārdhaṃ nītvā tava paraṃ padam ..
Taking all of them along with me to your supreme abode,
3.3.20.177
punarjanmabhayaṃ ghoraṃ vimocaya namostu te .. 84 ..
free us from the terrifying fear of rebirth. Salutations to you!”
3.3.20.178
tatheti tasyā vacanaṃ pratinaṃdya maheśvaraḥ ..
Saying 'So be it', Maheśvara praised her words,
3.3.20.179
tānsarvāṃśca tayā sārdhaṃ nināya paramaṃ padam .. 85 ..
and led all of them together with her to the supreme abode.
3.3.20.180
.. parāśara uvāca .. ..
Parāśara said:
3.3.20.181
nāṭyamaṃḍapikādāhe yau dūraṃ vidrutau purā ..
“The two who previously ran far away during the burning of the theater pavilion,
3.3.20.182
tatrāvaśiṣṭau tāveva kukkuṭo markaṭastathā .. 86 ..
those very two left behind there were a rooster and a monkey.
3.3.20.183
kālena nidhanaṃ yāto yastasyā nāṭyamarkaṭaḥ ..
Her dancing monkey who met his death in the course of time,
3.3.20.184
sobhūttava kumāro'sau kuvakuṭo maṃtriṇaḥ sutaḥ .. 87 ..
he became this prince of yours, and the rooster became the minister's son.
3.3.20.185
rudrākṣadhāraṇodbhūtātpuṇyātpūrvabhavārjitāt ..
From the merit acquired in a previous existence by wearing the rudrākṣa,
3.3.20.186
kule mahati saṃjātau vartete bālakāvimau .. 88 ..
these two boys have been born and live in an exalted family.
3.3.20.187
pūrvābhyāsena rudrākṣāndadhāte śuddhamānasau ..
Because of previous habit, their minds pure, they wear rudrākṣas;
3.3.20.188
asmiñjanmani taṃ lokaṃ śivaṃ saṃpūjya yāsya taḥ .. 89 ..
in this life, having worshiped Śiva, the two shall go to that world [of Śiva].
3.3.20.189
eṣā pravṛttistvanayorbālayoḥ samudāhṛtā ..
Thus the past history of these two boys has been narrated,
3.3.20.190
kathā ca śivabhaktāyā kimanyatpraṣṭumicchasi .. 90 ..
as well as the story of the devotee of Śiva. What else do you wish to ask?”
3.3.20.191
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekā śītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmottarakhaṇḍe rudrākṣamahimavarṇanaṃ nāma viṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 20 .. .. a ..
Thus ends the twentieth chapter, named 'Description of the Greatness of Rudrākṣa', in the Brahmottarakhaṇḍa, the third [section] of the venerable Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
