He, having arrived, seized Death by force as he approached to slay your son,
3.3.21.153
gṛhītvā sudṛḍhaṃ baddhvā daṃḍenābhyahanadruṣā .. 74 ..
bound him very firmly, and struck him with a staff in fury. // 74
3.3.21.154
taṃ nīyamānaṃ jagadīśasannidhiṃ śīghraṃ viditvā bhagavānyamaḥ svayam ..
Swiftly learning that he was being led into the presence of the Lord of the Universe, the blessed Yama himself
3.3.21.155
kṛtāṃjalirdeva jayetyudīrayanpraṇamya mūrdhnā nijagāda śūlinam .. 75 ..
joined his hands, uttered, 'O God, be victorious!', bowed with his head, and addressed the trident-bearing Lord: // 75
3.3.21.156
.. yama uvāca .. ..
Yama said:
3.3.21.157
devadeva mahārudra vīrabhadra namo'stu te ..
O God of gods, O Mahārudra, O Vīrabhadra, homage be to you!
3.3.21.158
nirāgasi kathaṃ mṛtyau kopastava samutthitaḥ..76..
Why has your wrath arisen against Death, who is blameless? // 76
3.3.21.159
nijakarmānubaṃdhena rājaputraṃ gatāyuṣam..
When Death undertook to strike the prince whose lifespan had run out
3.3.21.160
prahartumudyate mṛtyau koparādho vada prabho..77..
in accordance with his own past action, what was the offense? Tell me, O Lord. // 77
3.3.21.161
..vīrabhadra uvāca..
Vīrabhadra said:
3.3.21.162
daśavarṣasahasrāyuḥ sa rājatanayaḥ katham..
The prince's lifespan is ten thousand years. How
3.3.21.163
vipattimaṃtarāyāti rudrasnānahatāśubhaḥ..78..
can he meet with premature calamity when his evil has been destroyed by the Rudra-bath? // 78
3.3.21.164
asti cettava saṃdeho madvākye'pyanivārite ..
If you have a doubt even concerning my unhindered word,
3.3.21.165
citraguptaṃ samāhūya praṣṭavyo'dyaiva mā ciram.. 79 ..
Citragupta must be summoned and asked this very day without delay. // 79
3.3.21.166
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
3.3.21.167
athāhūtaścitragupto yamena sahasāgataḥ ..
Then Citragupta, summoned by Yama, swiftly arrived.
3.3.21.168
āyuḥpramāṇa tvatsūnoḥ paripṛṣṭaḥ sa cābravīt .. 3.3.21.80 ..
Questioned about the measure of your son's lifespan, he said: // 80
3.3.21.169
dvādaśābdaṃ ca tasyāyurityuktvātha vimṛśya ca ..
'Twelve years is his lifespan.' Having said this, he reflected,
3.3.21.170
punarlekhyagataṃ prāha sa varṣāyutajīvitam ..81..
and then declared what was recorded: a life of ten thousand years. // 81
3.3.21.171
atha bhīto yamo rājā vīrabhadraṃ praṇamya ca ..
Then, terrified, King Yama bowed to Vīrabhadra
3.3.21.172
kathaṃcinmocayāmāsa mṛtyuṃ durvārabaṃdhanāt .. 82 ..
and somehow released Death from his irresistible bonds. // 82
3.3.21.173
vīrabhadreṇa mukto'tha yamo'gānnijamaṃdiram ..
Released by Vīrabhadra, Yama went to his own abode,
3.3.21.174
vīrabhadraśca kailāsamahaṃ prāptastavāṃtikam .. 83 ..
and Vīrabhadra went to Kailāsa; and I have come to you. // 83
3.3.21.175
atastava kumāro'yaṃ rudrajāpyānubhāvataḥ ..
Therefore, this prince of yours, by the power of the recitation of the Rudra hymns,
3.3.21.176
mṛtyorbhayaṃ samuttīrya sukhī jāto'yutaṃ samāḥ .. 84 ..
has crossed over the fear of death and has become happy for ten thousand years. // 84
3.3.21.177
ityuktvā nṛpamāmaṃtrya nārade tridivaṃ gate ..
Having spoken thus and taken leave of the king, when Nārada had gone to heaven,
3.3.21.178
viprāḥ sarve pramuditāḥ svasvajagmurathāśramam .. 85 ..
all the brahmins, delighted, then went to their respective hermitages. // 85
3.3.21.179
itthaṃ kāśmīranṛpatī rudrādhyāyaprabhāvataḥ ..
Thus the king of Kāśmīra, through the power of the Rudrādhyāya,
3.3.21.180
nistīryāśeṣaduḥ khāni kṛtārthobhūtsaputrakaḥ..86..
crossed beyond all sorrows and achieved his goal along with his son. // 86
3.3.21.181
ye kīrtayaṃti manujāḥ parameśvarasya māhātmyametadatha karṇapuṭaiḥ pibaṃti ..
Those mortals who proclaim this māhātmya of the Supreme Lord, or drink it in with the cups of their ears,
3.3.21.182
te janmakoṭikṛtapāpagaṇairvimuktāḥ śāṃtāḥ prayāṃti paramaṃ padamiṃdumauleḥ .. 87 ..
freed from masses of sin committed in ten million births, serene, attain the supreme state of the Moon-crested Lord. // 87
3.3.21.183
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmottarakhaṃḍe rudrādhyāyamahimavarṇanaṃnāmaikaviṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 21 ..
Thus ends the twenty-first chapter, entitled 'Description of the Glory of the Rudrādhyāya,' in the Brahmottarakhaṇḍa of the third [part] of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the Samhitā of eighty-one thousand [verses]. // 21
