> 1. Now, in Naimiṣāraṇya, the asking of questions to the great seer Sūta by the great seers Śaunaka and others out of a desire to know the māhātmya of Śaṃkara; therein, first, the description by the great seer Sūta to the great seers Śaunaka and others of the māhātmya of the five-syllable mantra of Śaṃkara, and the description of the rules regarding receiving the mantra from a true guru and so forth. In that context, the narration of the account of King Dāśārha, the ruler of Mathurā; therein, the marriage of King Dāśārha to the daughter of the king of Kāśī; then, when she did not desire copulation on account of an observance, the king, wishing to enjoy her, pulled her by force, and as soon as her limb was touched, it was intensely heated like a red-hot iron ball; immediately letting her go and becoming terrified, when he asked the reason for her heated limb, she recounted to the king the power of the Śiva-pañcākṣarī mantra practiced by herself; the king's making a supplication to receive the Śiva-pañcākṣarī mantra from a true guru; then, having heard her words, when the king received the initiation of the venerable Śiva mantra from the teacher Garga on the bank of the Yamunā at the root of a sacred tree, sins came out from the pores of that king's body in the form of a billion crows and were reduced to ashes; then, the body of King Dāśārha having been purified, by the auspicious blessing of the guru, returning to his own home with that wife whose limbs were cool as sandalwood, and ruling the kingdom with the enjoyment of pleasures; the māhātmya of the Śiva-pañcākṣarī mantra. 172 1
