3.3.9.94

Hearing what she thus said, the son of the twice-born went on ahead;
3.3.9.95
viciṃtya parihāsoktiṃ gacchati sma yathā purā .. 46 ..
considering it to be words spoken in jest, he kept walking as before.
3.3.9.96
punarapyāha sā bālā tiṣṭhatiṣṭha kva yāsyasi..

sa eva me sakhā kinnu jāta eva varāṃganā ..
Has that very friend of mine truly become an excellent woman?
3.3.9.105
pṛcchāmyenamataḥ sarvamiti saṃcintya so'bravīt ..51..
Let me ask him everything.” Thinking thus, he said:
3.3.9.106
kimapūrva ivābhāṣi sakhe rūpaguṇādibhiḥ ..
“Why do you speak as if you are novel, friend, in form, qualities, and the like?
3.3.9.107
apūrvaṃ bhāṣase vākyaṃ kāminīva samākulā .. 52 ..
You speak strange words, like an agitated, impassioned woman!
3.3.9.108
yastvaṃ vedapurāṇajño brahmacārī jiteṃdriyaḥ ..
You who know the Vedas and Purāṇas, a celibate student with senses conquered,
3.3.9.109
sārasvatātmajaḥ śāṃtaḥ kathamevaṃ prabhāṣase .. 53 ..
the tranquil son of Sarasvatī’s progeny—how is it that you speak like this?”
3.3.9.110
ityuktā sā punaḥ prāha nāhamasmi pumānprabho ..
Addressed thus, she spoke again: “I am not a man, lord!
3.3.9.111
nāmnā sāmavatī bālā tavāsmi ratidāyinī.. 54 ..
By name I am Sāmavatī, a girl who gives you delight.
3.3.9.112
yadi te saṃśayaḥ kāṃta mamāṃgāni vilokaya ..
If you have any doubt, beloved, look upon my limbs!”
3.3.9.113
ityuktaḥ sahasā mārge rahasyenāṃ vyalokayat ..55..
Addressed thus, he suddenly gazed upon her in private on the path.
3.3.9.114
tāmakṛtrimadhammillāṃ javanastanaśobhinīm ..
Seeing her with her natural chignon, adorned with hips and breasts,
3.3.9.115
surūpāṃ vīkṣya kāmena kiṃcidvyākulatāmagāt .. 56 ..
beautiful in form, he felt somewhat perturbed by desire.
3.3.9.116
punaḥ saṃstabhya yatnena cetaso vikṛtiṃ budhaḥ ..
Restraining again with effort the agitation of his mind, the wise youth,
3.3.9.117
muhūrtaṃ vismayāviṣṭo na kiṃcitpratyabhāṣata .. 57 ..
seized with astonishment, did not reply at all for a moment.
3.3.9.118
.. sāmavatyuvāca .. ..
Sāmavatī said:
3.3.9.119
gataste saṃśayaḥ kaścittarhyāgaccha bhajasva mām ..
“Has any doubt of yours gone? Then come, enjoy me!
3.3.9.120
paśyedaṃ vipinaṃ kāṃta parastrīsuratocitam .. 58 ..
Behold this forest, beloved, suitable for lovemaking with another's woman!”
3.3.9.121
.. sumedhā uvāca .. ..
Sumedhas said:
3.3.9.122
maivaṃ kathaya maryādāṃ mā hiṃsīrmadamattavat ..
“Do not speak thus! Do not transgress propriety like one intoxicated by passion!
3.3.9.123
āvāṃ vijñātaśāstrārthau tvamevaṃ bhāṣase katham ..59..
The two of us know the meaning of the scriptures; how can you speak in this way?
3.3.9.124
adhītasya ca śāstrasya vivekasya kulasya ca ..
Is this practice of adultery a proper duty
3.3.9.125
kimeṣa sadṛśo dharmo jāradharmaniṣevaṇam .. 3.3.9.60 ..
worthy of the scripture you studied, of your discernment, and of your family?
3.3.9.126
na tvaṃ strī puruṣo vidvāñjānīhyātmānamātmanā ..
You are not a woman; you are a wise man. Know yourself by yourself!
3.3.9.127
ayaṃ svayaṃkṛto'nartha āvābhyāṃ yadviceṣṭitam .. 61 ..
This misfortune was made by ourselves through how the two of us acted:
3.3.9.128
vaṃcayitvātmapitarau dhūrttarājānuśāsanāt ..
having deceived our parents at the order of a rogue king,
3.3.9.129
kṛtvā cānucitaṃ karma tasyaitadbhujyate phalam .. 62 ..
and having performed an improper deed, this fruit of it is now being reaped.
3.3.9.130
sarvaṃ tvanucitaṃ karma nṛṇāṃ śreyovināśanam ..
Indeed, every improper deed destroys the welfare of men,
3.3.9.131
yastvaṃ viprātmajo vidvāngataḥ strītvaṃ vigarhitam .. 63 ..
since you, a learned son of a brahmin, have fallen into despised womanhood.
3.3.9.132
mārgaṃ tyaktvā gato'raṇyaṃ naro vidhyeta kaṇṭakaiḥ ..
A man who leaves the path and goes into the wilderness is pierced by thorns,
3.3.9.133
balārddhisyeta vā hiṃsrairyadā tyaktasamā gamaḥ .. 64 ..
or is forcibly destroyed by beasts of prey when he abandons good company.
3.3.9.134
evaṃ vivekamāśritya tūṣṇīmehi svayaṃ gṛham ..
Therefore, resorting to discernment, come silently to your own home;
3.3.9.135
devadvijaprasādena strītvaṃ tava vilīyate .. 65 ..
by the grace of gods and brahmins, your womanhood will dissolve.
3.3.9.136
athavā daivayogena strītvameva bhavettava ..
Or if through the working of destiny womanhood alone should remain yours,
3.3.9.137
pitrā dattā mayā sākaṃ raṃsyase varavarṇini .. 66 ..
given by your father, you will take pleasure with me, O fair-complexioned lady!
3.3.9.138
aho citramaho duḥkhamaho pāpabalaṃ mahat ..
Ah, what a wonder! Ah, what sorrow! Ah, the great power of sin!
3.3.9.139
aho rājñaḥ prabhāvoyaṃ śivārādhanasaṃbhṛtaḥ .. 67 ..
Ah, this is the power of the king, amassed through the worship of Śiva!”
3.3.9.140
ityuktāpyasakṛttena sā vadhūrativihvalā ..
Though spoken to repeatedly by him in this way, that young woman, exceedingly distressed,
3.3.9.141
balena taṃ samāliṃgya cucuṃbādharapallavam .. 68 ..
embracing him with force, she kissed the sprout of his lower lip.
3.3.9.142
dharṣitopi tayā dhīraḥ sumedhā nūtanastriyam ..
Though thus assailed by her, the steadfast Sumedhas
3.3.9.143
yatnādānīya sadanaṃ kṛtsnaṃ tatra nyavedayat .. 69 ..
brought the new woman home with effort and related everything there.
3.3.9.144
tadākarṇyātha tau viprau kupitau śokavihvalau ..
Hearing that, the two brahmins, enraged and frantic with grief,
3.3.9.145
tābhyāṃ saha kumārābhyāṃ vaidarbhāṃtikamīyatuḥ .. 3.3.9.70 ..
went into the presence of the king of Vidarbha along with the two youths.
3.3.9.146
tataḥ sārasvataḥ prāha rājānaṃ dhūrtaceṣṭitam ..
Then Sārasvata spoke to the king who had acted deceitfully:
3.3.9.147
rājanmamātmajaṃ paśya tava śāsanayaṃtritam .. 71 ..
"O king, look upon my son, constrained by your order!
3.3.9.148
etau tavājñāvaśagau cakratuḥ karma garhitam ..
Under the power of your command, these two performed a reprehensible deed.
3.3.9.149
matputrastatphalaṃ bhuṃkte strītvaṃ prāpya jugupsitam.. 72 ..
Having obtained loathsome womanhood, my son now reaps its fruit.
3.3.9.150
adya me saṃtatirnaṣṭā nirāśāḥ pitaro mama ..
Today my lineage is destroyed; my ancestors are left hopeless.
3.3.9.151
nāputrasya hi lokosti luptapiṃḍādisaṃskṛteḥ .. 73 ..
For there is no world for a sonless man whose funeral rites such as the piṇḍa offerings are lost.
3.3.9.152
śikhopavītamajinaṃ maujīṃ daṃḍaṃ kamaṃḍalum ..
Abandoning the crest-tuft, the sacred thread, the deer hide, the muñja girdle, the staff, the water-pot—
3.3.9.153
brahmacaryocitaṃ cihnaṃ vihāyemāṃ daśāṃ gataḥ .. 74 ..
