4.46.51
.. mārtaṃḍa uvāca .. ..
Mārtaṇḍa said:
4.46.52
maṃdaraṃ yadi yāmyadya sadyastatkruddhyatīśvaraḥ ..
“If I go to Mandara today, the Lord will instantly grow angry
4.46.53
aniṣpāditakāryārthe mayi sāmānyabhṛtyavat .. ..25 ..
at me, as if at an ordinary servant, whose purpose has not been accomplished.
4.46.54
kopamapyurarīkṛtya yadi yāyāṃ kathaṃcana ..
Even taking his wrath upon myself, if I should go somehow,
4.46.55
kathaṃ tiṣṭhe purastasya tarhi vai mūḍhabhṛtyavat .. 26 ..
how indeed could I stand before him like a foolish servant?
4.46.56
athoṃkṛtyāvahelaṃ vā yāmi cecca kathaṃcana ..
And if, uttering assent or in disregard, I somehow go,
4.46.57
krodhānnirīkṣettryakṣo māṃ viṣaṃ peyaṃ tadā mayā .. 27 ..
the three-eyed lord will look at me in rage; then poison must be drunk by me.
4.46.58
harakopānale nūnaṃ yadi yātaḥ pataṃgatām ..
Truly, if I become a moth into the fire of Hara's wrath,
4.46.59
pitāmahopi māṃ trātuṃ tadā śakṣyati nasphuṭam .. 28 ..
even the grandfather [Brahmā] will certainly not be able to protect me.
4.46.60
sthāsyāmyatraiva tannityaṃ na tyakṣyāmi kadācana ..

4.46.61
kṣetrasaṃnyāsavidhinā vārāṇasyāṃ kṛtāśramaḥ .. 29 ..
having made my hermitage in Vārāṇasī according to the rule of kṣetrasaṃnyāsa.
4.46.62
puraḥ purāreḥ kāyārthamanivedyeha tiṣṭhataḥ ..
For me remaining here without reporting the matter before the enemy of Tripura,
4.46.63
yatpāpaṃ bhāvi me tasya kāśīpāpasyaniṣkṛtiḥ ..4.1.46.30..
whatever sin shall arise, Kāśī is the expiation of that sin.
4.46.64
anyānyapi ca pāpāni mahāṃtyalpāni yāni ca ..
Whatever other sins there may be, great or small,
4.46.65
kṣayaṃti tāni sarvāṇi kāśīṃ praviśatāṃ satām ..31..
all those perish for virtuous people who enter Kāśī.
4.46.66
buddhipūrvaṃ mayā caitanna pāpaṃ samupārjitam ..
And this sin was not deliberately acquired by me;
4.46.67
purāriṇaiva hi purā''śāsi dharmo hi rakṣyatām .. 32 ..
for indeed formerly it was commanded by the enemy of Tripura: ‘Let righteousness be protected!’
4.46.68
dharmo hi rakṣito yena dehe satvaragatvare ..
By him by whom righteousness is protected while the body is swiftly passing away,
4.46.69
trailokyarakṣitaṃ tena kiṃ kāmārthaiḥ surakṣitaiḥ ..33 ..
the three worlds are protected; what is the use of well-protected pleasure and wealth?
4.46.70
rakṣaṇīyo yadi bhavetkāmaḥ kāmāriṇā katham ..
If pleasure ought to be protected, how was it that Kāma,
4.46.71
kṣaṇādanaṃgatāṃ nīto bahūnāṃ sukhakāryapi ..34..
though bringing happiness to many, was in an instant reduced to bodilessness by the enemy of Kāma?
4.46.72
arthaścetsarvathārakṣya iti kaiścidudāhṛtam..
If it is said by some: ‘Wealth must be protected by all means,’
4.46.73
tatkathaṃ na hariścaṃdro'rakṣatkuśikanaṃdane .. 35 ..
then why did Hariścandra not protect it when faced with Kuśika's son [Viśvāmitra]?
4.46.74
dharmastu rakṣitaḥ sarvairapidehavyayena ca ..
Righteousness, however, was protected by all, even at the cost of their bodies—
4.46.75
śibiprabhṛtibhūpālairdadhīcipramukhairdvijaiḥ .. 36 ..
by kings like Śibi and by leading twice-borns like Dadhīci.
4.46.76
ayameva hi vai dharmaḥ kāśīsevanasaṃbhavaḥ ..
This very righteousness arising from service to Kāśī

will protect me even from an enraged Rudra, without a doubt.
4.46.78
avāpya kāśīṃ duṣprāpāṃ ko jahāti sacetanaḥ ..
Having reached Kāśī, so hard to attain, what conscious person abandons it?
4.46.79
ratnaṃ karasthamutsṛjya kaḥ kācaṃ saṃjighṛkṣati .. 38 ..
Abandoning a jewel in one's hand, who desires to grasp a piece of glass?
4.46.80
vārāṇasīṃ samutsṛjya yastvanyatra yiyāsati ..
He who, having cast aside Vārāṇasī, desires to go elsewhere,
4.46.81
hatvā nidhānaṃ pādena sorthamicchati bhikṣayā .. 39 ..
kicks away a treasure with his foot and seeks wealth through begging.
4.46.82
putramitrakalatrāṇi kṣetrāṇi ca dhanāni ca ..
Sons, friends, wives, fields, and riches,
4.46.83
pratijanmeha labhyaṃte kāśyekā naiva labhyate .. 4.1.46.40 ..
can be obtained in birth after birth here; Kāśī alone is never obtained.
4.46.84
yena labdhā purī kāśī trailokyoddharaṇakṣamā ..
By him by whom the city of Kāśī—capable of delivering the three worlds—has been attained,
4.46.85
trailokyaiśvaryaduṣprāpaṃ tena labdhaṃ mahāsukham .. 41 ..
great bliss, difficult to obtain through the sovereign power of the three worlds, has been attained.
4.46.86
kupitopi hi me rudrastejohāniṃ vidhāsyati ..
“Even if Rudra is angered, he will only cause the loss of my luster;
4.46.87
kāśyāṃ ca lapsye tattejo yadvai svātmāvabodhajam .. 42 ..
and in Kāśī I shall regain that luster which indeed is born of self-realization.
4.46.88
itarāṇīha tejāṃsi bhāsaṃte tāvadeva hi ..
Other splendors shine here only so long,
4.46.89
khadyotābhāni yāvanno jṛṃbhate kāśijaṃ mahaḥ .. 43 ..
resembling fireflies, as long as the glory born of Kāśī does not expand.”
4.46.90
iti kāśīprabhāvajño jagaccakṣustamonudaḥ ..
Knowing thus the majesty of Kāśī, the eye of the universe, dispeller of darkness,
4.46.91
kṛtvā dvādaśadhātmānaṃ kāśīpuryāṃ vyavasthitaḥ .. 44 ..
divided himself twelvefold and took up residence in the city of Kāśī:
4.46.92
lolārka uttarārkaśca sāṃbādityastathaiva ca ..
Lolārka and Uttarārka, and likewise Sāmbāditya,
4.46.93
caturtho drupadādityo mayūkhāditya eva ca .. 45 ..
Drupadāditya as the fourth, and Mayūkhāditya,
4.46.94
khakholkaścāruṇādityo vṛddhakeśavasaṃjñakau ..
Khakholka and Aruṇāditya, the two known as Vṛddhakeśava,
4.46.95
daśamo vimalādityo gaṃgādityastathaiva ca .. .. 46 ..
the tenth, Vimalāditya, and likewise Gaṅgāditya,
4.46.96
dvādaśaśca yamādityaḥ kāśipuryāṃ ghaṭodbhava ..
and the twelfth is Yamāditya in the city of Kāśī, O pot-born one!
4.46.97
tamo'dhikebhyo duṣṭebhyaḥ kṣetraṃ rakṣaṃtyamī sadā .. 47 ..
These always protect the sacred field from wicked beings abundant in ignorance.
4.46.98
tasyārkasya manololaṃ yadāsītkāśidarśane ..
Because that sun’s mind was trembling (lola) upon seeing Kāśī,
4.46.99
ato lolārka ityākhyā kāśyāṃ jātā vivasvataḥ .. 48 ..
therefore Vivasvat acquired the name Lolārka in Kāśī.
4.46.100
lolārkastvasisaṃbhede dakṣiṇasyāṃ diśisthitaḥ ..
Lolārka, stationed at the confluence of the Asi in the southern direction,

4.46.108
lolārkasaṃgame snātvā dānaṃ homaṃ surārcanam ..

4.46.112
lolārke rathasaptamyāṃ snātvā gaṃgāsisaṃgame ..
Having bathed at Lolārka, at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the Asi, on the Rathasaptamī,

saptajanmakṛtaiḥ pāpairmukto bhavati tatkṣaṇāt .. 55 ..
one is freed that very moment from sins committed in seven lifetimes.
4.46.114
pratyarkavāraṃ lolārkaṃ yaḥ paśyati śucivrataḥ ..
One of pure vows who beholds Lolārka on every Sunday,

surely troubles born of hunger and disease will beset that man.
4.46.120
sarveṣāṃ kāśitīrthānāṃ lolārkaḥ prathamaṃ śiraḥ ..
Lolārka is the first head of all the sacred fords of Kāśī;
4.46.121
tatoṃ'gānyanyatīrthāni tajjalaplāvitānihi .. 59 ..
the other sacred fords are its limbs, flooded indeed with its water.
4.46.122
tīrthāṃtarāṇi sarvāṇi bhūmīvalayagānyapi ..
All other sacred fords, even those situated on the circle of the earth,
4.46.123
asisaṃbhedatīrthasya kalāṃ nārhaṃti ṣoḍaśīm .. 4.1.46.60 ..
are not worth a sixteenth part of the sacred ford at the Asi confluence.
4.46.124
sarveṣāmeva tīrthānāṃ snānādyallabhyate phalam ..
Whatever fruit is obtained from ritual ablution in all sacred fords,

that fruit is fully attained by men at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the Asi.
4.46.126
nārthavādoyamuditaḥ stutivādo na vai mune ..
This is not mere rhetoric (arthavāda) that has been spoken; it is not mere eulogy, O sage;
4.46.127
satyaṃ yathārthavādoyaṃ śraddheyaḥ sadbhirādarāt .. 62 ..
this is the truth, an accurate statement, to be believed with reverence by the virtuous.

logicians and carpers wrongly consider that [testimony] false.
4.46.130
udāharaṃti ye mūḍhāḥ kutarkabaladarpitāḥ ..
Those fools, arrogant with the force of sophistry, who declare,
4.46.131
kāśyāṃ sarverthavādoyaṃ te viṭkīṭā yugeyuge .. 64 ..
“All this is mere rhetoric in Kāśī,” become worms in excrement age after age.
4.46.132
kasyacitkāśitīrthasya mahimno mahatastulām..
Even the pavilion of the three worlds could never equal the scale

nādhirohenmune nūnamapi trailokyamaṃḍapaḥ .. 65 ..
of the great majesty of any single sacred ford of Kāśī, O sage.
4.46.134

4.46.135
aṃtyajātāśca ye teṣāṃ puraḥ kāśī na varṇyatām .. 66 ..
and outcasts—before them let not Kāśī be described.
4.46.136
lolārkakaraniṣṭaptā asidhāra vikhaṃḍitāḥ ..
Scorched by the rays of Lolārka, severed by the sword-edge (asidhārā) [of the river],

never becomes miserable anywhere in this transmigration, this ocean of misery.
4.46.140
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ caturthe kāśīkhaṃḍe pūrvārddhe lolārkavarṇanaṃ nāma ṣaṭcatvāriṃśodhyāyaḥ .. 46 ..
