"How shall I, alone, bereft of father and mother,
4.47.36

tatra pratyahamāgatya tiṣṭhettatpurato'calā ..26..
came there every day and stood motionless before her.
4.47.54
tṛṇaparṇādikaṃ kiṃcitsāyamabhyavahṛtya sā ..
Having eaten a little grass, leaves, and the like in the evening,
4.47.55
tatkuṃḍapītapānīyā svasvāmisadanaṃ vrajet .. 27 ..
and having drunk water from that pool, it would return to its master's house.
4.47.56
tata itthaṃ vyatītāsu paṃcaṣā susamāsu ca ..
Then, when five or six years had passed in this manner,
4.47.57
līlayā vicarandevastatra devyā sahāgataḥ .. 28 ..
the god, wandering sportively, arrived there together with the goddess.
4.47.58
sannidhāvuttarārkasya tapasyatīṃ sulakṣaṇām ..
In the presence of Uttarārka, Sthāṇu [Śiva] beheld Sulakṣaṇā performing austerity,
4.47.59
sthāṇuvanniścalāṃ sthāṇuradrākṣīttapasā kṛśām ..29..
motionless like a pillar, emaciated by austerity.
4.47.60
tato girijayā śaṃbhurvijñaptaḥ karuṇātmanā ..
Then Śambhu was petitioned by Girijā, whose heart was filled with compassion:
4.47.61
vareṇānugṛhāṇemāṃ baṃdhuhīnāṃ sumadhyamām .. 4.1.47.30 ..
"Favor with a boon this slender-waisted girl who is bereft of kin!"
4.47.62
śarvāṇīgiramākarṇya tataḥ śarvaḥ kṛpānidhiḥ ..
Hearing the words of Śarvāṇī, Śarva, the ocean of compassion,
4.47.63
samādhimīlitākṣīṃ tāmuvāca varado haraḥ .. 31 ..
To her whose eyes were closed in deep meditation, Hara, the giver of boons, said:
4.47.64
sulakṣaṇe prasannosmi varaṃ varaya suvrate ..
“O Sulakṣaṇā, I am pleased; choose a boon, O woman of virtuous vows!
4.47.65
ciraṃ khinnāsi tapasā kaste'stīha manorathaḥ ..32..
You have long been weary from your tapas; what wish of yours is there here?”
4.47.66
sāpi śaṃbhorgiraṃ śrutvā mukhapīyūṣavarṣiṇīm ..
Hearing Śambhu's words that showered nectar from his mouth
4.47.67
mahāsaṃtāpaśamanīṃ locane udamīlayat..33..
and assuaged intense torment, she opened her eyes.
4.47.68
tryakṣaṃ pratyakṣamāvīkṣya varadānonmukhaṃ puraḥ ..
Beholding visibly before her the three-eyed god intent on granting a boon,
4.47.69
devīṃ ca vāmabhāgasthāṃ praṇanāma kṛtāṃjaliḥ .. 34 ..
and the goddess standing at his left side, she bowed with folded hands.
4.47.70
kiṃ vṛṇe yāvaditthaṃ sā ciṃtayeccārumadhyamā ..
While the slender-waisted maiden was pondering, “What shall I choose?”
4.47.71
tāvattayāniraikṣiṣṭa varākī barkarī puraḥ .. 35 ..
just then she caught sight of the wretched she-goat before her.
4.47.72
ātmārthaṃ jīvalokesminko na jīvati mānavaḥ ..
“In this world of living beings, what man does not live for himself?
4.47.73
paraṃ paropakārārthaṃ yo jīvati sa jīvati .. 36 ..
He alone lives who lives for the sake of helping others.
4.47.74
anayā mattapovṛtti sākṣiṇyā bahvanehasam ..
By this [creature], who witnessed the course of my tapas for a long time,
4.47.75
asevyahaṃ tadetasyai varayāmi jagatpatim .. 37 ..
I was attended; therefore, I will ask the Lord of the Universe for a boon for her.”
4.47.76
parāmṛśya manasyetatprāha tryakṣaṃ sulakṣaṇā ..
Having reflected on this in her mind, Sulakṣaṇā addressed the three-eyed god:
4.47.77
kṛpānidhe mahādeva yadi deyo varo mama .. .. 38 ..
“O Mahādeva, storehouse of mercy, if a boon is to be granted to me,
4.47.78
ajaśāvī varākyeṣā tarhi prāganugṛhyatām ..
then let this wretched young female goat first be shown grace.
4.47.79
vaktuṃ paśutvānnovetti kiṃcinmadbhaktipeśalā .. 39 ..
Owing to her animal nature she knows not how to speak at all, yet she is tender in her devotion to me.”
4.47.80
iti vācaṃ niśamyeśaḥ paropakṛtiśālinīm..
Hearing this speech distinguished by benevolence toward others,
4.47.81
sulakṣaṇāyā nitarāṃ tutoṣa praṇatārtihā .. 4.1.47.40 ..
the Lord who dispels the distress of the bowed was exceedingly pleased with Sulakṣaṇā.
4.47.82
devadavastataḥ prāha devi paśya girīṃdraje ..
Then the God of gods said: “Look, O Goddess, O daughter of the Mountain King!
4.47.83
sādhūnāmīdṛśī buddhiḥ paropakaraṇorjitā .. 41 ..
Such is the intellect of the virtuous, exalted by aiding others.
4.47.84
te dhanyāḥ sarvalokeṣu sarvadharmāśrayāśca te ..
They are fortunate throughout all worlds, and they are the refuge of all virtues,
4.47.85
yataṃte sarvabhāvena paropakaraṇāya ye ..42..
who strive with their whole being for the sake of helping others.
4.47.86
saṃcayāḥ sarvavastūnāṃ ciraṃ tiṣṭhati no kvacit ..
Accumulations of all possessions never endure for long anywhere;
4.47.87
suciraṃ tiṣṭhate caikaṃ paropakaraṇaṃ priye ..43..
helping others alone endures for a very long time, my beloved.
4.47.88
dhanyā sulakṣaṇā caiṣā yogyā'nugrahakarmaṇi ..
Blessed is this Sulakṣaṇā, worthy of an act of grace.
4.47.89
brūhi devi varo deyaḥ ko'syaicchāgyai ca kaḥ priye .. 44 ..
Tell, O goddess, my beloved, what boon should be given to her, and what to this she-goat?”
4.47.90
.. śrīdevyuvāca .. ..
The holy Goddess said:
4.47.91
sarvasṛṣṭikṛtāṃ kartaḥ sarvajñapraṇatārtihan ..
“O Maker of the makers of all creation, omniscient one, dispeller of the distress of the bowed!
4.47.92
sulakṣaṇā śubhācārā sakhī mestu śubhodyamā .. 45 ..
Let Sulakṣaṇā of virtuous conduct and auspicious resolve become my companion,
4.47.93
yathā jayā ca vijayā yathā caiva jayaṃtikā ..
even as Jayā and Vijayā, and even as Jayantikā,
4.47.94

as Karpūralatikā, and as auspicious Gandhadhārā,

as Kokilālāpā, as Madhurabhāṣiṇī,
4.47.100
gadyapadyanidhiryadvadanuktajñā yathā ca sā .. 49 ..
as she who is a treasury of prose and verse, as she who understands what is unsaid,
4.47.101
dṛgaṃcaleṃgitajñā ca yathā kṛtamanorathā ..
as she who knows hints from the glance of an eye, as she who fulfills wishes,
4.47.102
gānacittaharā yadvattathāstveṣā sulakṣaṇā .. 4.1.47.50 ..
and as she who captivates hearts with song—even so let this Sulakṣaṇā be!
4.47.103
atipriyā bhavitrī me yadbāla brahmacāriṇī ..
She will be very dear to me, since as a girl she has remained celibate.

holding a waving flywhisk, let her abide forever near me.
