4.54.51
tāpasodīritamiti tadrakṣaḥ prītipūvarkam ..

4.54.52
niśamya prāṃjaliḥ prāha taṃ kṛpāluṃ tapodhanam .. 25 ..
with folded hands addressed that compassionate one rich in austerity.
4.54.53
.. rākṣasa uvāca ..

“If you have compassion, O venerable best of ascetics,
4.54.55
svavṛttāṃtaṃ tadā vacmi śṛṇuṣvāvahitaḥ kṣaṇam .. 26 ..
then I shall tell my own story; listen attentively for a moment.
4.54.56
pratiṣṭhānābhidhānosti deśo godāvarī taṭe ..
There is a land named Pratiṣṭhāna on the bank of the Godāvarī.
4.54.57
tīrthapratigraharucistatrāsaṃ brāhmaṇastvaham .. 27 ..

4.54.58
tena karmavipākena prāptosmi gatimīdṛśīm ..
Through the ripening of that action, I have attained such a state as this,
4.54.59
marusthale mahāghore tarutoyavivarjite .. 28 ..
in a terrible desert tract devoid of trees and water.
4.54.60
gato bahutaraḥ kālastatra me vasato mune ..
A very long time passed as I dwelt there, O sage,
4.54.61
kṣudhitasya tṛṣārtasya śītatāpasahasya ca .. 29 ..
hungry, afflicted with thirst, and enduring cold and heat.
4.54.62
varṣatyapi mahāmeghe dhārāsārairdivāniśam ..
Even when a great cloud rained downpours day and night
4.54.63
prāvṛṭkāle'nile vāti kiṃcitprāvaraṇaṃ na me .. 4.2.54.30 ..
in the rainy season, and the wind blew, I had no covering at all.
4.54.64
parvaṇyadattadānā ye kṛtatīrthapratigrahāḥ ..
Those who do not give gifts on sacred days, yet take gifts at sacred fords—
4.54.65
ta imāṃ yonimṛcchaṃti mahāduḥkha nibaṃdhanīm .. 31 ..
they enter this womb that binds them to great suffering.
4.54.66
gate bahutithe kāle marubhūmau mune mayā ..
After much time had passed in the desert, O sage,
4.54.67
dṛṣṭo brāhmaṇadāyāda ekadā kaścidāgataḥ .. 32 ..
I once saw a descendant of a brahmin who had arrived there.
4.54.68
sūryodayamanuprāpya saṃdhyāvidhivivarjitaḥ ..
Though sunrise had arrived, he neglected the rites of the twilight twilight devotions;
4.54.69
kṛtvā mūtrapurīṣe tu śaucācamanavarjitaḥ .. 33 ..
having passed urine and feces, he omitted purification and sipping water;
4.54.70
muktakacchamaśaucaṃ ca saṃdhyākarmavivarjitam ..
his loincloth was loose, he was impure, and abandoned the twilight rites.
4.54.71
taṃ dṛṣṭvā taccharīrehaṃ saṃkrāṃto bhogalipsayā .. 34 ..
Seeing him, I entered into his body out of a desire for enjoyment.
4.54.72
sa dvijo maṃdabhāgyānme kenacidvaṇijā saha ..
Because of my misfortune, that twice-born man, along with a merchant,
4.54.73
arthalobhena saṃprāptaḥ purīṃ puṇyāmimāṃ mune ..35..
out of greed for wealth reached this holy city, O sage.
4.54.74
aṃtaḥpuri praviṣṭobhūtsa dvijo munisattama ..
That twice-born man entered inside the city, O best of sages;
4.54.75
taccharīrādbahirbhūtastvahaṃ pāpaiḥ samaṃ kṣaṇāt ..36..
but I was cast out of his body in an instant, together with his sins.
4.54.76
praveśo nāsti cāsmākaṃ pretānāṃ tapasāṃ nidhe ..
For ghosts like us have no entry, O treasure of austerities,
4.54.77
mahatāṃ pātakānāṃ ca vārāṇasyāṃ śivājñayā ..37..
nor do great sins, into Vārāṇasī, by the command of Śiva.
4.54.78
adyāpi tāni pāpāni tadbahirnirgamecchayā ..
Even today, those sins remain strictly outside on the boundary
4.54.79
bahireva hi tiṣṭhaṃti sīmni pramathasādhvasāt ..38..
due to fear of the Pramathas, waiting for his exit outside.
4.54.80
adya śvo vā paraśvo vā sa bahirnirgamiṣyati ..
‘Today, tomorrow, or the day after, he will come out’—
4.54.81
ityāśayā sthitāḥ smo vai yāvadadya tapodhana .. 39 ..
with this hope we have waited until today, O you whose wealth is austerity.
4.54.82
nādyāpi sa bahirgacchennādyāpyāśā prayāti naḥ ..
Even now he does not come out, nor does our hope fade away;
4.54.83
ityāsmahe nirādhārā āśāpāśa niyaṃtritāḥ .. 4.2.54.40 ..
thus we sit without support, bound by the cords of hope.
4.54.84
citramadyatanaṃ vacmi tapasviṃstanniśāmaya ..
I will tell you a wonder of today, O ascetic; listen to it!
4.54.85
atīva bhāvi kalyāṇamiti manye'dhunaiva hi .. 41 ..
I think that very great good fortune is about to come right now.
4.54.86
āprayāgaṃ pratidinaṃ prayāmaḥ kṣudhitā vayam..
Every day we go hungry all the way to Prayāga,
4.54.87
āhārakāmyayā kvāpi paraṃ no kiṃcidāpnumaḥ .. 42 ..
wishing for food somewhere, but we obtain nothing at all!
4.54.88
saṃti sarvatra phalinaḥ pādapāḥ pratikānanam ..
Everywhere there are fruit-bearing trees in every forest,
4.54.89
jalāśayāśca svacchāpāḥ saṃti bhūmyāṃ padepade .. 43 ..
and bodies of clear water exist on the earth at every step;
4.54.90
anyānyapi ca bhakṣyāṇi sarveṣāṃ sulabhānyaho ..
other foods as well are easily available to all, alas,
4.54.91
pānānyapi vicitrāṇi saṃti bhūyāṃsi sarvataḥ .. 44 ..
and various drinks exist in abundance everywhere;
4.54.92
paraṃ no dṛggatānyeva dūre dūre vrajaṃtyaho ..
yet as soon as they come into our sight, alas, they move far, far away!
4.54.93
daivādadyaikamāyāṃtaṃ dṛṣṭvā kārpaṭikaṃ mune ..45..
By chance, seeing a pilgrim coming today, O sage,
4.54.94
tasyāṃtikamahaṃ prāptaḥ kṣudhayā paripīḍitaḥ ..
I approached near him, tormented by hunger,
4.54.95
prasahya bhakṣayāmyenamiti matvā tvarānvitaḥ .. 46 ..
hastening with the thought: ‘I will forcefully devour him!’
4.54.96
yāvattaṃ tu jighṛkṣāmi tāvattadvadanāṃbujāt ..
Just as I wished to seize him, from his lotus-face
4.54.97
śivanāmapavitrā vāṅniragādvighnahāriṇī .. 47 ..
from his lotus-like mouth came forth speech purified by the name of Śiva, dispelling obstacles.
4.54.98
śivanāmasmaraṇato madīyamapi pātakam ..
From the remembrance of Śiva's name, even my sin
4.54.99
maṃdībhūtaṃ tatastena praveśaṃ labdhavānaham .. 48 ..
became weakened; therefore, by him, I gained entry.
4.54.100
sīmasthaiḥ pramathairnāhaṃ sadyo dṛggocarīkṛtaḥ ..
I was not immediately noticed by the Pramathas stationed at the boundary;
4.54.101
śivanāmaśrutau yeṣāṃ tānna paśyedyamopi yat .. 49 ..
for even Yama does not look upon those who hear the name of Śiva.
4.54.102
aṃtargehasya sīmānaṃ prāptastena sahādhunā ..
Along with him I have now reached the threshold of the inner chamber;
4.54.103
sa tu kārpaṭiko madhyaṃ praviṣṭohamihasthitaḥ .. 4.2.54.50 ..
that pilgrim entered within, while I remained here.
4.54.104
ātmānaṃ bahumanyehaṃ tvāṃ vilokyādhunā mune ..
Seeing you now, O sage, I deem myself fortunate.
4.54.105
māmuddhara kṛpālo tvaṃ yonerasmātsadāruṇāt .. 51 ..
Deliver me, O compassionate one, from this most dreadful womb!
4.54.106
iti pretavacaḥ śrutvā sa kṛpālustapodhanaḥ ..
Hearing these words of the ghost, that compassionate ascetic
4.54.107
manasā ciṃtayāmāsa dhiṅnijārthodyamānnarān .. 52 ..
reflected in his mind: 'Fie upon men whose efforts are only for themselves!
4.54.108
svodaraṃ bhara yaḥ sarve paśupakṣimṛgādayaḥ ..
All beings such as beasts, birds, and animals merely fill their own bellies;
4.54.109
sa eva dhanyaḥ saṃsāre yaḥ parārthodyataḥ sadā ..53..
he alone is blessed in this world who is ever intent on the welfare of others.
4.54.110
tapasādya nijenāhaṃ pretametamaghāturam..
Today, by my own austerity, this ghost afflicted by sin,
4.54.111
māmeva śaraṇaṃ prāptamuddhariṣyāmyasaṃśayam .. 54 ..
who has taken refuge in me alone, I shall surely deliver.'
4.54.112
vimṛśyeti sa vai citte piśācaṃ prāha sattamaḥ ..
Reflecting thus in his mind, that best of men said to the piśāca:
4.54.113
vimalode sarasyasminsnāhi re pāpanuttaye .. 55 ..
'Bathe in this lake of clear water to dispel your sin, O [ghost]!
4.54.114
piśāca te piśācatvaṃ tīrthasyāsya prabhāvataḥ ..
O piśāca, through the power of this sacred ford
4.54.115
kapardīśekṣaṇādadya kṣaṇātkṣīṇaṃ vinaṃkṣyati .. 56 ..
and by the sight of Kapardīśa, your state as a piśāca will be destroyed, dwindling away this very moment.'
4.54.116
śrutveti sa munervākyaṃ pretaḥ prāha praṇamya tam..
Hearing these words of the sage, the ghost bowed down to him
4.54.117
prītātmā prītamanasaṃ prabaddhakarasaṃpuṭaḥ ..57..
with a joyful soul and joined palms, and spoke to the glad-minded [sage]:
4.54.118
pānīyaṃ pātumapi no labheyaṃ munisattama .
snānasya kā kathā nātha rakṣeyurjaladevatāḥ ..58..
'O best of sages, I cannot even get water to drink; / what question is there of bathing, O protector? The water deities guard it.
4.54.119
pānasyāpyatra kā vārtā jalasparśopi durlabhaḥ ..
What mention can there be of drinking here? Even touching the water is hard to attain.'
4.54.120
iti pretoktamākarṇya sa bhṛśaṃ prītimānabhūt .. 59 ..
Hearing what the ghost said, he was filled with deep compassion
4.54.121
uvāca ca tapasvī taṃ jagaduddharaṇakṣamaḥ ..
and the ascetic, capable of delivering the world, said to him:
4.54.122
gṛhāṇemāṃ vibhūtiṃ tvaṃ lalāṭaphalake kuru .. 4.2.54.60 ..
'Take this sacred ash and place it upon your forehead.
4.54.123
asmādvibhūtimāhātmyātpreta kopi na kutracit ..
By virtue of the majesty of this sacred ash, no ghost anywhere
4.54.124
bādhā karoti kasyāpi mahāpātakinopyaho ..61 ..
causes any affliction to anyone, even to a great sinner!
4.54.125
bhālaṃ vibhūtidhavalaṃ vilokya yamakiṃkarāḥ ..
Seeing a forehead white with sacred ash, the servants of Yama
4.54.126
pāpinopi palāyaṃte bhītāḥ pāśupatāstrataḥ .. 62 ..
flee from even a sinner, terrified by the Pāśupata weapon.
4.54.127
asthidhvajāṃkitaṃ dṛṣṭvā yathā pāṃthā jalāśayam ..
Just as travelers go far away from a body of water upon seeing it marked with a banner of bones,
4.54.128
dūraṃ yaṃti tathā bhasma bhālāṃkaṃ yamakiṃkarāḥ .. 63 ..
so the servants of Yama keep far away from a forehead marked with ash.
4.54.129
kṛtabhūti tanutrāṇaṃ śivamaṃtrairnarottamam ..
Even violent beings from all sides never approach the best of men
4.54.130
nopasarpaṃti niyatamapi hiṃsrāḥ samaṃtataḥ .. 64 ..
who has made armor of ash with Śiva's mantras.
4.54.131
bhaktyā bibharti yo bhasma śivamaṃtrapavitritam ..
He who with devotion wears ash purified by Śiva's mantras
4.54.132
bhāle vakṣasi dormūle na taṃ hiṃsaṃti hiṃsakāḥ 55 ..
on his forehead, chest, and armpits—injurious beings do not harm him.
4.54.133
sarvebhyo duṣṭasattvebhyo yato rakṣedaharniśam ..
Because it protects day and night from all evil creatures,
4.54.134
rakṣatyeṣā tataḥ proktā vibhūtirbhūtikṛdyataḥ .. 66 ..
it is therefore called rakṣā (protection); and it is called vibhūti because it creates prosperity (bhūti).
4.54.135
bhāsanādbhartsanādbhasma pāṃsuḥ pāṃsutvadāyataḥ ..
It is called bhasma from shining (bhāsana) and rebuking [evil] (bhartsana); it is called pāṃsu because it bestows the nature of fine dust;
4.54.136
pāpānāṃ kṣāraṇātkṣāro budherevaṃ nirucyate .. 67 ..
and it is named kṣāra by the wise from dissolving (kṣāraṇa) sins.'
4.54.137
gṛhītvā dhāramadhyātsa bhasma pretakare'rpayat ..
Taking ash from his pouch, he placed it in the ghost's hand;
4.54.138
sopyādarātsamādāya bhāladeśe nyaveśayat .. 68 ..
he too took it reverently and applied it to the region of his forehead.
4.54.139
vibhūtidhāriṇaṃ vīkṣya piśācaṃ jaladevatāḥ ..
Seeing the piśāca wearing sacred ash
4.54.140
jalāvagāhanaparaṃ vārayāṃcakrire na tam .. 69 ..
intent on plunging into the water, the water deities did not stop him.
4.54.141
snātvā pītvā sa nirgacchedyāvattasmājjalāśayāt ...
tāvatpaiśācyamagamaddivyadehamavāpa ca .. 4.2.54.7 0..
As soon as he bathed, drank, and came out of that lake, / his piśāca state vanished and he attained a divine body.
4.54.142
divyamālāṃbaradharo divyagaṃdhānulepanaḥ ..
Wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with divine fragrances,
4.54.143
divyayānaṃ samāruhya vartma prāptotha pāvanam .. 71 . .
gacchatā tena gagane sa tapasvī namaskṛtaḥ ..
he mounted a celestial vehicle and set out on the pure path. / Moving through the sky, he bowed to that ascetic
4.54.144
proccaiḥ provāca bhagavanmocitosmi tvayānagha .. 72 ..
and spoke aloud: 'O venerable one, I have been liberated by you, O sinless one!
4.54.145
tasmātkadaryayonitvādatīva pariniṃditāt ..
From that despicable and utterly censured birth
4.54.146
asya tīrthasya māhātmyāddivyadehamavāptavān ..73..
I have attained a divine body by the majesty of this sacred ford!
4.54.147
piśācamocanaṃ tīrthamadyārabhya samākhyayā ..
Beginning today, this sacred ford, by the name Piśācamocana,
4.54.148
anyeṣāmapi paiśācyamidaṃ snānāddhariṣyati ..74..
shall also remove the condition of a piśāca for others through ritual ablution.
4.54.149
asmiṃstīrthe mahāpuṇye ye snāsyaṃtīha mānavāḥ ..
Whatever mortals shall bathe here in this most sacred ford
4.54.150
piṃḍāṃśca nirvapiṣyaṃti saṃdhyātarpaṇapūrvakam .. 75 ..
and offer funeral cakes preceded by twilight devotion and libations,
4.54.151
daivātpaiśācyamāpannāsteṣāṃ pitṛpitāmahāḥ ..
even if their fathers and grandfathers have through fate fallen into the state of a piśāca,
4.54.152
tepi paiśācyamutsṛjya yāsyaṃti paramāṃ gatim .. 76..
they too will abandon the piśāca state and attain the supreme destination.

propitiated Kapardīśvara and in due course attained nirvāṇa.
