Om, homage to Puruṣottama.
Now begins the sixth [section], the Nāgarakhaṇḍa, in the Skandamahāpurāṇa.
Vyāsa said:
May the matted hair of Dhūrjaṭi lead to your victory,
wherein the Jāhnavī even today causes the illusion of a single grey strand.
5.1.2
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ.
harasya pūjyate liṃgaṃ kasmādatanmahāmate
viśeṣātsaṃparityajya śeṣāṃgāni surāsuraiḥ..6.1.2..
The seers said:
Why, O high-minded one, is the liṅga of Hara worshipped
specifically by gods and demons, leaving aside the rest of his limbs?
5.1.3
tasmādetanmahābāho yathāvadvaktumarhasi.
sāṃprataṃ sūta kārtsnyena paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ..6.1.3..
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, you ought to tell this properly
in full now, O Sūta, for our curiosity is indeed great.
5.1.4
sūta uvāca.
praśnabhāro mahāneṣa yo bhavadbhirudāhṛtaḥ.
kīrtayiṣye tathāpyenaṃ namaskṛtya svayaṃbhuve..6.1.4..
Sūta said:
Great is this burden of a question which has been uttered by you;
nevertheless, having bowed to the self-manifest one, I shall proclaim it.
5.1.5
ānartaviṣaye cāsti vanaṃ munijanāśrayam.
manojñaṃ sarvasattvānāṃ sarvartuphalitadrumam..6.1.5..

asti tāpasasaṃkīrṇaṃ vedadhvanivirājitam..6.1.6..
There is a lovely hermitage frequented by gentle creatures,
filled with ascetics, radiant with the sound of the Vedas,
5.1.7
abbhakṣairvāyubhakṣaiśca śīrṇaparṇāśibhistathā.
dantolūkhalibhirvipraiḥ sevitaṃ cāśmakuṭṭakaiḥ..6.1.7..
frequented by brahmins living on water, living on air, eating fallen leaves,
using teeth as mortars, and using stones as pounders,
5.1.8
snānahomaparaiścaiva japasvādhyāyatatparaiḥ.
vānaprasthaistridaṇḍaiśca haṃsaiścāpi kuṭīcaraiḥ..6.1.8..

kasyacittvatha kālasya bhagavāṃstripurāṃtakaḥ..6.1.9..
snātakas, disciplined ascetics, and practitioners of the five fires.
Then, after some time, the blessed destroyer of Tripura,
5.1.10
satīviyogasaṃtapto bhramamāṇa itastataḥ.
tasminvane samāyātaḥ saumyasattvaniṣevite..6.1.10..
tormented by separation from Satī, wandering here and there,
arrived in that forest frequented by gentle creatures,
5.1.11
krīḍaṃti nakulā yatra sārdhaṃ sarpaiḥpraharṣitāḥ.
pañcānanāśca mātaṃgairvṛṣadaṃśāstathākhubhiḥ.
kākāḥ kauśikasaṃghaiśca vairabhāvavivarjitāḥ..6.1.11..
where mongooses play delightfully together with snakes,
lions with elephants, cats with mice,
and crows with flocks of owls, entirely free from enmity.
5.1.12
tataśca bhagavānrudro dṛṣṭvāśramapadaṃ tadā.
nagnaḥ kapālamādāya bhikṣārthaṃ praviveśa saḥ..6.1.12..
Then the blessed Rudra, seeing that hermitage,
entered naked, taking a skull-bowl to seek alms.
5.1.13
atha tasya samālokya rūpaṃ gātrasamudbhavam.
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ tāpasyaḥ sarvāḥ kāmavaśaṃ gatāḥ..6.1.13..
Then, beholding the form manifested in his limbs,
never seen before, all the ascetic women fell under the sway of desire.
5.1.14
gṛhakarma parityajya guruśuśrūṣaṇāni ca.
mithaḥ saṃbhāṣaṇaṃ cakruḥ sthānesthāne ca tāḥ sthitāḥ..6.1.14..
Abandoning household chores and attendance upon their elders,
standing here and there, they conversed with one another.

ekā sā kāpi dhanyā yā cakre tasyāvagūhanam.
viśrabdhā sarvagātreṣu tāpasasya mahātmanaḥ..6.1.15..
A certain fortunate woman embraced him;
trusting, [she pressed herself] against all the limbs of that great-souled ascetic.
5.1.16
tathānyāḥ kautukāviṣṭā dhāvaṃtyaḥ sarvatodiśam.
dṛśyaṃte taṃ samuddiśya vistāritavilocanāḥ..6.1.16..
Likewise, other women filled with fascination, running in all directions,
were seen looking at him with wide-open eyes:
5.1.17
kāścidarddhānuliptāṃgyaḥ kāścidekāṃjitekṣaṇāḥ.
ardhasaṃyamitaiḥ kaiśaistathānyāstyaktabālakāḥ..6.1.17..
some with their limbs half-anointed, some with collyrium in only one eye,
with hair half-tied up, and others leaving their children behind.
5.1.18
evamālokyamānaḥ sa kāminībhirmaheśvaraḥ.
babhrāma rājamārgeṇa bhikṣāṃ dehīti kīrtayan..6.1.18..
Being thus gazed upon by the enamoured women, Maheśvara
wandered along the main road, calling out, "Give alms!"
5.1.19
atha te munayo dṛṣṭvā taṃ tathā vigatāṃbaram.
kāmodbhavakaraṃstrīṇāṃ procuḥ kopāruṇekṣaṇāḥ..6.1.19..
Then those sages, seeing him thus unclad,
arousing passion in the women, their eyes red with anger, said:
5.1.20
yasmātpāpa tvayāsmākamāśramo'yaṃ viḍaṃbitaḥ.
tasmālliṃgaṃ patatvāśu tavaiva vasudhātale..6.1.20..
"Since our hermitage has been mocked by you, you wicked one,
therefore let your liṅga immediately fall onto the surface of the earth!"
5.1.21
etasminnaṃtare bhūmau liṃgaṃ tasya papāta tat.
bhittvātha dharaṇīpṛṣṭhaṃ pātālaṃ praviveśa ha..6.1.21..
At that very moment, that liṅga of his fell upon the earth;
and having split the surface of the ground, it entered Pātāla.
5.1.22
so'pi liṃgaparityakto lajjāyukto maheśvaraḥ.
gartāṃ gurvīṃ samāśritya bhrūṇarūpaḥ samāviśat..6.1.22..
He too, bereft of his liṅga and filled with shame, Maheśvara,
took shelter in a deep cavity and entered it in the form of an embryo.
5.1.23
atha liṃgasya pātena trailokyabhayaśaṃsinaḥ.
utpātā dāruṇāstasthuḥ sarvatra dvijasattamāḥ..6.1.23..
Then, due to the falling of the liṅga, terrifying portents
heralding fear for the three worlds occurred everywhere, O best of the twice-born.
5.1.24
śīryate giriśṛṅgāṇi pataṃtyulkā divāpi ca.
tyajaṃti sāgarāḥ sarve maryādāṃ ca śanaiḥ śanaiḥ..6.1.24..
Mountain peaks crumble, meteors fall even by day,
and all the oceans gradually abandon their bounds.
5.1.25
atha devagaṇāḥ sarve bhayasaṃtrastamānasāḥ.
śakraviṣṇumukhā jagmuryatra devaḥ pitāmahaḥ..6.1.25..
Then all the hosts of gods, their minds terrified with dread,
led by Śakra and Viṣṇu, went to where the god Pitāmaha was.
5.1.26
procuśca praṇatāḥ stutvā stotraiḥ suśrutisaṃbhavaiḥ.
trailokye sṛṣṭirūpaṃ yatkamalāsanasaṃsthitam..6.1.26..
Having bowed down and praised him with hymns derived from the fine scriptures,
they spoke to him who is seated on a lotus throne, the creator in the three worlds:
5.1.27
kimidaṃ kimidaṃ deva vartate hyadharottaram.
trailokyaṃ sakalaṃ yena vyākulatvamupāgatam..6.1.27..
"What is this, O Lord, what is this topsy-turvy state that has arisen,
by which the entire threefold world has been thrown into distress?
5.1.28
pralayasyeva cihnāni dṛśyaṃte padmasaṃbhava.
kiṃ sāṃpratamakāle'pi bhaviṣyati parikṣayaḥ..6.1.28..
Signs like those of the cosmic dissolution are seen, O lotus-born one.
Will there now be untimely destruction?
5.1.29
sarveṣāṃ suramartyānāṃ daityānāṃ mantrakovidaḥ.
gatirbhayārtadehānāṃ sarvalokapitāmahaḥ..6.1.29..
O knower of mantras, the refuge of all gods, mortals, and Daityas
whose bodies are afflicted by fear, the grandfather of all the worlds!"
5.1.30
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā devānāṃ caturānanaḥ.
uvāca suciraṃ dhyātvā jñātvā divyena cakṣuṣā..6.1.30..
Hearing those words of the gods, the four-faced one,
having meditated for a long time and understood through his divine eye, spoke:
5.1.31
pralayasya na kālo'yaṃ sāṃprataṃ surasattamāḥ.
śṛṇudhvaṃ yannimittotthā mahotpātā bhavantyamī..6.1.31..
"This is not the time of cosmic dissolution now, O best of the gods.
Listen to the reason from which these great portents have arisen:
5.1.32
ṛṣibhiḥ pātitaṃ liṃgaṃ devadevasya śūlinaḥ.
śāpenānartake deśe kalatrārthe mahātmabhiḥ..6.1.32..
The liṅga of the god of gods, the spear-wielder, was caused to fall
by the great-souled seers through a curse in the land of Ānarta, on account of their wives.
5.1.33
tenaitadvyākulībhūtaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram.
tasmādgacchāmahe tatra yatra devo maheśvaraḥ..6.1.33..
Because of that, this threefold world, with all that moves and is still, has become agitated.
Therefore, let us go there, where the god Maheśvara is,
5.1.34
yenāsmadvacanācchīghraṃ talliṃgaṃ nidadhāti saḥ.
no cedbhaviṣyati vyaktamakāle cāpi saṃkṣayaḥ.
trailokyasyāpi kṛtsnasya satyametanmayoditam..6.1.34..
so that, at our word, he may quickly set that liṅga [in place] again.
Otherwise, untimely destruction will visibly come to pass
for the entire three worlds as well; this that I have spoken is true."
5.1.35
atha devagaṇāḥ sarve brahmaviṣṇupuraḥsarāḥ.
ādityā vasavo rudrā viśvedevāstathāśvinau..6.1.35..
Then all the hosts of gods, headed by Brahmā and Viṣṇu,
the Ādityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Viśvedevas, and the Aśvins,
5.1.36
prajagmustvaritāstatra yatra devo maheśvaraḥ.
gartāmadhyagataḥ supto lajjayā parayā vṛtaḥ..6.1.36..
hastily went to where the god Maheśvara was,
lying asleep within a pit, enveloped in great shame.
5.1.37
devā ūcuḥ.
namaste devadeveśa bhaktānāmabhayaprada.
namaste jagadādhāra śaśirājitaśekhara..6.1.37..
The gods said:
"Homage to you, O Lord of the god of gods, who grant fearlessness to devotees!
Homage to you, O support of the universe, whose crest is adorned by the moon!
5.1.38
tvaṃ yajñastvaṃ vaṣaṭkārastvamāpastvaṃ mahī vibho.
tvayā sṛṣṭamidaṃ sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram..6.1.38..
You are the sacrifice, you are the vaṣaṭ-call, you are the waters, you are the earth, O all-pervading Lord!
By you was this entire threefold world created, with all that moves and is still.
5.1.39
tvaṃ pāsi ca suraśreṣṭha tathā nāśaṃ nayiṣyasi.
tvaṃ viṣṇustvaṃ caturvaktrastvaṃ caṃdrastvaṃ divākaraḥ..6.1.39..
You protect, O best of gods, and likewise you lead to destruction.
You are Viṣṇu, you are the four-faced one, you are the moon, you are the sun.
5.1.40
tvayā vinā mahādeva na kiṃcidiha vidyate.
api kṛtvā mahatpāpaṃ naro deva dharātale..6.1.40..
Without you, O Mahādeva, nothing exists here.
Even having committed a great sin, a man on the surface of the earth, O Lord—"
5.1.41
tava nāmāpi saṃkīrtya prayāti tridivālayam.
mahādeva mahādeva mahādeveti kīrtanāt..6.1.41..
even by chanting your name, he goes to heaven, the abode of the gods. / From the chanting of "Mahādeva, Mahādeva, Mahādeva",
5.1.42
koṭayo brahmahatyānāmagamyāgamakoṭayaḥ.
sadyaḥ pralayamāyāṃti mahādeveti kīrtanāt..6.1.42..
crores of murders of brahmins and crores of incestuous relations / are dissolved immediately, from the recitation: "Mahādeva!"
5.1.43
vipro yathā manuṣyāṇāṃ nadīnāṃ vā mahārṇavaḥ.
tathā tvaṃ sarvadevānāmādhipatye vyavasthitaḥ..6.1.43..
Just as the brahmin stands supreme among men, or the great ocean among rivers, / so do you stand in sovereignty over all the gods.
5.1.44
nakṣatrāṇāṃ yathā caṃdraḥ pradīptānāṃ divākaraḥ.
tathā tvaṃ sarvadevānāmādhipatye vyavasthitaḥ..6.1.44..
Just as the moon stands supreme among the asterisms, and the sun among luminous bodies, / so do you stand in sovereignty over all the gods.
5.1.45
dhātūnāṃ kāṃcanaṃ yadvadgaṃdharvāṇāṃ ca nāradaḥ.
tathā tvaṃ sarvadevānāmādhipatye vyavasthitaḥ..6.1.45..
Just as gold stands supreme among metals, and Nārada among the gandharvas, / so do you stand in sovereignty over all the gods.
5.1.46
oṣadhīnāṃ yathā sasyaṃ nagānāṃ hemaparvataḥ.
tathā tvaṃ sarvadevānāmādhipatye vyavasthitaḥ..6.1.46..
Just as cultivated grain stands supreme among plants, and the golden mountain [Meru] among mountains, / so do you stand in sovereignty over all the gods.
5.1.47
tasmātkuru prasādaṃ naḥ sarveṣāṃ ca nṛṇāṃ vibho.
saṃdhāraya punarliṃgaṃ svakīyaṃ surasattama..6.1.47..
Therefore, show grace to us and to all human beings, O all-pervading lord; / take up your own liṅga once again, O best of the gods.
5.1.48
nocejjagattrayaṃ deva nūnaṃ nāśamamupeṣyati.
yadyetadbhūtale liṅgaṃ patati sthāsyati prabho..6.1.48..
Otherwise, O lord, the three worlds will surely meet destruction / if this liṅga falls and remains upon the surface of the earth, O master.
5.1.49
sūta uvāca.
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā bhagavānbṛṣabhadhvajaḥ.
provāca praṇatānsarvāṃstāndevānvrīḍayānvitaḥ..6.1.49..
Sūta said: / Hearing that speech of theirs, the blessed lord whose banner bears a bull, / filled with modesty, spoke to all those gods who stood bowing down:
5.1.50
mayā satīviyogārtiyuktena surasattama.
liṃgametatparityaktaṃ śāpavyājāddvijanmanām..6.1.50..
"Afflicted with the agony of separation from Satī, O best of the gods, / this liṅga was cast away by me under the pretext of the curse of the twice-born.
5.1.51
ko'laṃ pātayituṃ liṃgaṃ mamaitadbhuvanatraye.
devo vā brāhmaṇo vāpi vettha yūyamapi sphuṭam..6.1.51..
Who in the three worlds is capable of causing my liṅga to fall, / be it a god or even a brahmin? You too know this clearly.
5.1.52
tasmānnaiva dhariṣyāmi liṃgametaddharātalāt.
kimanena kariṣyāmi bhāryayā parivarjitaḥ..6.1.52..
Therefore, I shall not take up this liṅga from the earth's surface. / Deprived of my wife, what will I do with it?"
5.1.53
devā ūcuḥ.
tava kāṃtā satī nāma yā mṛtā prāksurottama.
sā jātā menakāgarbhe gaurī nāma himācalāt..6.1.53..
The gods said: / "She who was your beloved, named Satī, who previously died, O best of the gods, / has been born from Himācala in the womb of Menakā under the name Gaurī.
5.1.54
bhaviṣyati punarbhāryā tavaiva tripurāṃtaka.
tasmālliṃgaṃ samādāya kuru kṣemaṃ divaukasām..6.1.54..
She will once again become your wife, O destroyer of Tripura. / Therefore, take up your liṅga and grant well-being to the gods."
5.1.55
devadeva uvāca.
adyaprabhṛti me liṃgaṃ yadi devā dvijātayaḥ.
pūjayaṃti prayatnena tarhīdaṃ dhārayāmyaham..6.1.55..
The god of gods said: / "If from this day forward the gods and the twice-born / worship my liṅga with devotion, then I shall take it up."
5.1.56
brahmovāca.
ahaṃ tava svayaṃ liṃgaṃ pūjayiṣyāmi śaṃkara.
tathānye vibudhāḥ sarve kiṃ punarbhuvi mānavāḥ..6.1.56..
Brahmā said: / "I myself will worship your liṅga, O Śaṃkara, / and so will all the other gods; how much more so mortals upon earth!"
5.1.57
tataḥ praviśya pātālaṃ devaiḥ sārdhaṃ pitāmahaḥ.
svayamevākarotpūjāṃ tasya liṃgasya bhaktitaḥ..6.1.57..
Then, having entered Pātāla along with the gods, the Grandsire / himself worshiped that liṅga with devotion.
5.1.58
tasmādanaṃtaraṃ viṣṇuḥ śraddhāpūtena cetasā.
tathānye vibudhāḥ sarve śakrādyāḥ śraddhayānvitāḥ..6.1.58..
Immediately after him, Viṣṇu [worshiped it] with a mind purified by faith, / and likewise all the other gods headed by Śakra, filled with faith.
5.1.59
tatastuṣṭo mahādevaḥ pitāmahamidaṃ vacaḥ.
provāca vāsudevaṃ ca vinayāvanataṃ sthitam..6.1.59..
Then Mahādeva, well-pleased, spoke these words / to the Grandsire and to Vāsudeva who stood bowed in humility:
5.1.60
bhavadbhyāṃ parituṣṭo'smi tasmānmattaḥ pragṛhyatām.
varamiṣṭaṃ mahābhāgau yadyapi syātsudurlabham..6.1.60..
"I am greatly pleased with both of you; therefore, receive from me / the desired boon, O fortunate ones, even if it be very difficult to attain."
5.1.61
tāvūcatuḥ.
yadi tuṣṭosi deveśa tribhāgena samāśrayam.
āvābhyāṃ dehi liṃgena yenaikatrāśrayo bhavet..6.1.61..
The two of them said: / "If you are pleased, O lord of gods, grant through your liṅga / an abode divided into three parts for both of us, so that there may be a shared dwelling in one place."
5.1.62
sūta uvāca.
sa tatheti pratijñāya liṃgamādāya ca prabhuḥ.
sthāne niyojayāmāsa sarvadevādhipūjitam..6.1.62..
Sūta said: / Having agreed, saying, 'So be it,' the master took up the liṅga, / worshiped by all the lords of the gods, and installed it in its place.
5.1.63
tato hāṭakamādāya tadākāraṃ pitāmahaḥ.
kṛtvā liṃgaṃ svayaṃ tatra sthāpayāmāsa harṣitaḥ..6.1.63..
Then, taking gold, the Grandsire fashioned a liṅga / of that very form and himself joyfully installed it there.
5.1.64
provāca cātha bho viprāḥ sādhunādena nādayan.
lokatrayaṃ samastānāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ tridivaukasām..6.1.64..
Then he spoke, O brahmins, making the three worlds resound / with a loud proclamation, while all the celestial beings listened:
5.1.65
mayā hyādyaṃ tvidaṃ liṃgaṃ hāṭakena vinirmitam.
khyātiṃ yāsyati sarvatra pātāle hāṭakeśvaram..6.1.65..
"Indeed, this first liṅga was fashioned by me from gold (hāṭaka); / it will attain fame everywhere in Pātāla as Hāṭakeśvara.
5.1.66
tathānye manujā ye ca hāṭakādīni bhaktitaḥ.
maṇimuktāsuratnaiśca kṛtvā liṃgāni kṛtsnaśaḥ..6.1.66..
Likewise, whichever other mortals out of devotion fashion liṅgas / from gold and other materials, and entirely of jewels, pearls, and precious gems,
5.1.67
trikālaṃ pūjayiṣyaṃti te yāsyaṃti parāṃ gatim.
mṛnmayaṃ saṃparityajya nīcadhātumayaṃ tathā..6.1.67..
and worship them at the three junctures of the day, leaving aside what is made of clay / and what is made of base metal, they will attain the supreme state."
5.1.68
evamuktvā caturvaktraḥ saha sarvairdivālayaiḥ.
jagāma tridivaṃ so'pi kailāsaṃ śaśiśekharaḥ..6.1.68..
Having spoken thus, the four-faced [Brahmā] went to heaven along with all the gods, / and the moon-crested lord went to Kailāsa.
5.1.69
etasmātkāraṇālliṃgaṃ pūjyate'tra surāsuraiḥ.
harasya cottamāṃgāni parityajya viśeṣataḥ..6.1.69..
For this reason, the liṅga of Hara is especially worshiped here / by gods and asuras, in preference to his superior limbs.
5.1.70
tataḥ prabhṛti talliṃgaṃ svayaṃ brahmā vyavasthitaḥ.
bhagavānvāsudevaśca tena pūjyaṃ śivaṃ hi tat..6.1.70..
From that time forth, Brahmā himself and the blessed Vāsudeva / have taken up residence in that liṅga; therefore is that auspicious [symbol of] Śiva worshipful.
5.1.71
yastu pūjayate nityaṃ śraddhāyuktena cetasā.
tryaṃbakācyutabrahmādyāstena syuḥ pūjitāstrayaḥ..6.1.71..
He who continually worships it with a faithful heart / worships those three: the three-eyed Rudra, Acyuta, and Brahmā.
5.1.72
tasmātsarvaprayatnena śivaliṃgaṃ prapūjayet.
sparśayedīkṣayennityaṃ kīrtayecca dvijottamāḥ..6.1.72..
Therefore, by every effort one should worship the Śivaliṅga, / touch it, look upon it daily, and praise it, O best of the twice-born.
5.1.72_1
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ ṣaṣṭhe nāgarakhaṇḍe hāṭakeśvarakṣetramāhātmye liṃgotpattivarṇanaṃ nāma prathamo'dhyāyaḥ..1..
Thus ends the first chapter, named 'Description of the Origin of the Liṅga,' in the section on the greatness of Hāṭakeśvarakṣetra in the Nāgarakhaṇḍa, in the sixth part of the glorious Skandapurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
