Sūta said:
A king of Ānarta, known as Camatkāra,
arrived there in the forest at that time to slay deer.
From afar he saw a doe, motionless beneath a tree,
giving her teat to her fawn, trusting and without fear of anything.
5.10.3
atha tāṃ pārthivastūrṇaṃ śareṇānataparvaṇā ..
jaghānākarṇakṛṣṭena marmasthāne praharṣitaḥ .. 3 ..
Then the king swiftly, with a straight-jointed arrow
drawn to his ear, struck her in a vital spot, full of joy.
5.10.4
sahasā sā hatā tena gārddhrapatreṇa patriṇā ..

she looked in every direction all around, tormented by pain.

provācāśrupariklinnavadanā sutavatsalā .. 5 ..
Then, seeing the ruler of the earth nearby bearing a bow,
she spoke, her face drenched with tears, loving her fawn:
5.10.6
.. mṛgyuvāca .. ..
ayuktaṃ pṛthivīpāla yattvayaitadanuṣṭhitam ..
hatā'haṃ bālavatsā'dya śareṇānataparvaṇā ..6..
The doe said:
It was improper, O protector of the earth, what you have done here:
I, whose young fawn is small, have been struck today with a straight-jointed arrow.
5.10.7
nā'haṃ śocāmi bhūpāla maraṇaṃ svaśarīragam ..
yathemaṃ vālakaṃ dīnaṃ kṣīrāsvādanalaṃpaṭam .. 7 ..
I do not grieve, O king, for the death coming upon my own body,
as much as for this helpless fawn who craves the taste of milk.
5.10.8
yasmāttvayedṛśaṃ karma nirdayaṃ samanuṣṭhitam ..
kuṣṭhavyādhisamāyuktastasmātsadyo bhaviṣyasi .. 8 ..
Since you have performed such a merciless deed,
you shall therefore immediately be afflicted with the disease of leprosy!
5.10.9
.. rājovāca .. ..
svadharma eṣa bhūpānāṃ kurvaṃti mṛgasaṃkṣayam ..
tasmātsvadharmasaṃyuktaṃ na māṃ tvaṃ śaptumarhasi .. 9 ..
The king said:
This is the inherent duty of kings, who effect the destruction of deer;
therefore you ought not to curse me, who was engaged in my own duty.
5.10.10
.. mṛgyuvāca .. ..
satyametanmahīpāla yattvayā parikīrtitam ..
kṣattriyāṇāṃ vadhārthāya mṛgāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ svayaṃbhuvā .. 6.10.10..
The doe said:
It is true, O king, what you have declared:
deer were created by the self-manifest [Brahmā] for the slaughter of kṣatriyas.
5.10.11
paraṃ tena vidhisteṣāṃkṛto yastaṃ mahīpate ..
śṛṇuṣvā'vahito bhūtvā vadaṃtyā mama sāṃpratam .. 11 ..
Yet hear attentively the rule concerning them which was laid down by him,
O king, as I speak it now:
5.10.12
suptaṃ maithunasaṃyuktaṃ stanapānakriyodyatam ..
hatvā mṛgaṃ jalāsaktaṃ naraḥ pāpena lipyate .. 12 ..
Having slain a deer that is asleep, engaged in mating, devoted to the act of suckling,
or absorbed in drinking water, a man is tainted with sin.
5.10.13
etasmātkāraṇācchāpastava datto mayā nṛpa ..
na kāmato na mṛtyorvā satyenātmānamālabhe .. 13 ..
For this reason the curse was pronounced upon you by me, O king;
neither out of passion nor out of fear of death—by the truth I swear upon my soul!

evamuktvā mṛgī prāṇānsā mumoca vyathānvitā ..
kuṣṭhavyādhisamāyuktaḥ so'pi rājā babhūva ha .. 14 ..
Having spoken thus, the doe gave up her vital breaths, filled with pain;
and that king, indeed, became afflicted with the disease of leprosy.
5.10.15
sa dṛṣṭvā kuṣṭhasaṃyuktaṃ pārthivaḥ svaṃ kalevaram..
tataḥ svānsevakānāha samāhūya suduḥkhitaḥ .. 15 ..
The king, seeing his own body covered with leprosy,
then summoned his servants and said, deeply sorrowful:
5.10.16
ahaṃ tapaścariṣyāmi pūjayiṣyāmi śaṃkaram ..
tāvadyāvatpraṇāśo me kuṣṭhavyādherbhaviṣyati .. 16 ..
“I will perform austerity; I will worship Śaṃkara
until the destruction of my leprosy disease shall come to pass.
5.10.17
yatkiṃcittriṣu lokeṣu prārthayaṃti narāḥ sukham ..
