brāhmaṇeṃdrāṃstataḥ prāha bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ .. 62 ..
he too was filled with sorrow upon seeing those born in his own city; / then, his eyes troubled with tears, he spoke to the best of brahmins:
5.113.63
śṛṇvaṃtu brāhmaṇāḥ sarve vacanaṃ mama sāṃpratam ..
mayā vinirgatenaiva tatpurāttoṣito haraḥ .. 63 ..

yathā syātsaṃkṣayasteṣāṃ nāgānāṃ sudurātmanām ..
yaiḥ kṛtaṃ naḥ puraṃ kṛtsnamudrasaṃ pāpakarmabhiḥ .. 65 ..
so that there may be the destruction of those extremely wicked nāgas / by whose sinful deeds our whole city has been ruined.”
5.113.66

prārthayāmāsa me deva taṃ varaṃ yaccha sāṃpratam ..66..
Having spoken thus, that brahmin Trijāta requested the Supreme Lord: / “O God, grant me that boon now.”
5.113.67
tataḥ provāca deveśaḥ prārthayasva drutaṃ dvija..

Then the Lord of gods said: “Quickly ask, O twice-born, / so that I may grant the desired [boon], even if it should be exceedingly difficult to obtain.”
5.113.68
.. trijāta uvāca .. ..
nāgairasmatpuraṃ kṛtsnaṃ kṛtaṃ janavivarjitam ..
tattasmātte kṣayaṃ yāṃtu sarve vṛṣabhavāhana .. 68 ..

5.113.69
yena tatpūryate viprairbhūyo'pi surasattama ..
mamāpi jāyate kīrtiḥ svasthānoddharaṇodbhavā .. 69 ..
so that it may be filled with brahmins once again, O best of gods, / and that fame arising from delivering my own abode may also accrue to me.”
5.113.70
.. śrībhagavānuvāca .. ..
nāyuktaṃ vihitaṃ vipra pannagaistairmahātmabhiḥ ..
nirdoṣaścāpi putro'tra yeṣāṃ vipreṇa sūditaḥ .. 6.114.70 ..
The Lord said: / “Nothing improper was done, O brahmin, by those noble serpents / whose blameless son was slain here by a brahmin,
5.113.71
viśeṣeṇa dvijaśreṣṭha saṃprāpte paṃcamīdine ..
tatrā'pi śrāvaṇe māsi pūjyaṃte yatra pannagāḥ .. 71 ..
especially, O best of the twice-born, when the fifth day [of the lunar fortnight] had arrived, / and that too in the month of Śrāvaṇa, when serpents are worshipped.
5.113.72
tasmātte'haṃ pravakṣyāmi siddhamaṃtramanuttamam ..
yasyoccāraṇamātreṇa sarppāṇāṃ naśyate viṣam .. 72 ..
Therefore, I shall tell you an infallible, unsurpassable mantra, / merely by the recitation of which the poison of serpents is destroyed.
5.113.73
taṃ maṃtraṃ tatra gatvā tvaṃ tadviprairakhilairvṛtaḥ ..
śrāvayasva mahābhāga tāraśabdena sarvaśaḥ ..73..
Having gone there surrounded by all those brahmins, / recite that mantra, O fortunate one, in a loud voice everywhere.
5.113.74
taṃ śrutvā ye na yāsyaṃti pātālaṃ pannagādhamāḥ ..
yuṣmadvākyādbhaviṣyaṃti nirviṣāste na saṃśayaḥ .. 74 .. ..
Those vilest of serpents who, having heard it, do not go to Pātāla, / will become venomless on your word; of this there is no doubt.”
5.113.75
.. trijāta uvāca .. ..
brūhi taṃ me mahāmaṃtraṃ sarvatīkṣṇavināśanam ..
yena gatvā nijaṃ sthānaṃ sarpānutsādayāmyaham ..75..
Trijāta said: / “Tell me that great mantra which destroys all virulent [poisons], / by which I, having gone to my own place, may eradicate the serpents.”
5.113.76
.. śrībhagavānuvāca .. ..
garaṃ viṣamiti proktaṃ na tatrāsti ca sāṃpratam ..
matprasādāttvayā hyetaduccāryaṃ brāhmaṇottama .. 76
The Lord said: / “Gara is called poison; and it is not there now. / By my grace, this is to be uttered by you, O best of brahmins:
5.113.77
na garaṃ na garaṃ caitacchrutvā ye pannagādhamāḥ..
tatra sthāsyaṃti te vadhyā bhaviṣyaṃti yathāsukham .. 77 ..
‘Na garaṃ, na garaṃ!’ [‘No poison, no poison!’] And hearing this, whichever vilest serpents / remain there, they can be killed at will.
5.113.78
adyaprabhṛti tatsthānaṃ nagarākhyaṃ dharātale ..
bhaviṣyati suvikhyātaṃ tava kīrtivivardhanam .. 78 ..
From this day forward, that place will become widely renowned / on the surface of the earth by the name ‘Nagara’, increasing your fame.
5.113.79
tathānyopi ca yo vipro nāgaraḥ śuddhavaṃśajaḥ ..
nagarākhyena maṃtreṇa abhimaṃtrya tridhā jalam .. 79 ..
Likewise, whatever other Nāgara brahmin born of a pure lineage, / having consecrated water three times with the mantra named Nagara,
5.113.80
prāṇinaṃ kāla saṃdaṣṭamapi mṛtyuvaśaṃgatam ..
prakariṣyati jīvāḍhyaṃ prakṣipya vadane svayam ..6.114.80...
shall pour it himself into the mouth of a living being bitten by death / and even fallen into the power of death, will restore him to life.
5.113.81
anyatrāpi sthito martyo maṃtrametaṃ trirakṣaram ..
yaḥ smariṣyati saṃsupto na hiṃsyaḥ syādaherhi saḥ ..81...
Even a mortal staying elsewhere who, when asleep, / remembers this three-syllable mantra, shall not be harmed by a serpent.
5.113.82
sthāvaraṃ jaṃgamaṃ vāpi kṛtrimaṃ vā garaṃ hi tat ..
tadanena ca maṃtreṇa saṃspṛṣṭaṃ tvamṛtāyitam ..82..
Whether mineral, vegetable, animal, or artificial, that poison / touched by this mantra indeed turns into nectar.
5.113.83
ajīrṇaprabhavā rogā ye cānye jaṭharodbhavāḥ..
maṃtrasyāsya prabhāvena sarve yāṃti drutaṃ kṣayam ..83..
Diseases arising from indigestion and whatever other ailments originate in the belly, / all quickly go to destruction through the power of this mantra.”
5.113.84
evamuktvā'tha taṃ vipraṃ bhagavānvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ..
jagāmādarśanaṃ paścādyathā dīpo vitailakaḥ ..84..
Having spoken thus to that brahmin, the Lord whose banner is the bull / then vanished, just like a lamp without oil.
5.113.85
trijāto'pi samaṃ viprairhataśeṣaistu tairdrutam ..
jagāma saṃprahṛṣṭātmā camatkārapuraṃ prati .. 85 ..
Trijāta, too, with a joyful mind, went quickly towards Camatkārapura / along with those brahmins who had survived the slaughter.
5.113.86
evaṃ te brāhmaṇāḥ sarve trijātena samanvitāḥ ..
na garaṃ na garaṃ proccairuccaraṃtaḥ samāyayuḥ .. 86 ..
