Deluded for the sake of family, bereft of company of the virtuous— / just as if one were reading scripture, that has fallen upon my heart today.
5.123.61
yadi na syādbhavadbhirme darśanaṃ cādya sattamāḥ ..
tadanyānyapi pāpāni kartāhaṃ syāṃ na saṃśayaḥ .. 61 ..
If my darśana with you had not occurred today, O best of beings, / then I would be a committer of yet other sins; there is no doubt.
5.123.62
teṣāṃ madhyagataścāsītpulaho nāma sanmuniḥ ..
hāsyaśīlaḥ sa taṃ prāha viplavārthaṃ dvijottamam .. .. 62 ..
And in their midst was a good sage named Pulaha; / fond of jesting, he said to that best of twice-born for the sake of confusion:
5.123.63
ahaṃ te kīrtayiṣyāmi mantramekaṃ suśobhanam ..
yaṃ dhyāyañjapyamānastvaṃ siddhiṃ yāsyasi śāśvatīm .. 63 ..
'I will proclaim to you a very auspicious mantra, / meditating on which and reciting it, you will attain eternal perfection.

jāṭaghoṭetimantro'yaṃ sarvasiddhipradāyakaḥ .. (ṭi. jāṭaghoṭā = jātigotra?)
tamenaṃ japa vipra tvaṃ divārātramataṃdritaḥ .. 64 ..
This mantra "jāṭaghoṭā" is the granter of all perfections; / mutter this, O brahmin, day and night without wearying.
5.123.65
tato yāsyasi saṃsiddhiṃ durlabhāṃ tridaśairapi .. 65 ..
Then you will attain complete perfection, difficult to attain even for the thirty [gods].'
5.123.66
evamuktvātha te viprāstīrthayātrāṃ tato yayuḥ ..
so'pi tatraiva caurastu sthito japaparāyaṇaḥ .. 66 ..
Having spoken thus, those brahmins then departed on their pilgrimage to sacred fords; / he too, the thief, remained right there, devoted to muttering [the mantra].
5.123.67
ananyamanasā tena prārabdhaḥ sa tadā japaḥ ..
yathā'bhavatsamādhistho yenāvasthāṃ parāṃ gataḥ .. 67 ..
With an undistracted mind, that repetition was then begun by him, / in such a way that he became absorbed in samādhi, whereby he attained the supreme state.
5.123.68
tasyaivaṃ smaramāṇasya taṃ mantraṃ brāhmaṇasya ca ..
niścalatvaṃ gataḥ kāyaḥ kārye ca niścalaḥ sthitaḥ .. 68 ..
As he, the brahmin, was thus remembering that mantra, / his body attained immobility, and he remained motionless in his undertaking.
5.123.69
tataḥ kālena mahatā valmīkena samāvṛtaḥ ..
samaṃtādbrāhmaṇaśreṣṭhā dhyānasthasya mahātmanaḥ .. 69 ..
Then, after a great length of time, he was covered all around by an anthill, / O best of brahmins, as that great-souled one remained in meditation.
5.123.70
tau mātāpitarau tasya sā ca bhāryā manasvinī ..
yātā mṛtyuvaśaṃ sarve tamanveṣya prayatnataḥ .. 6.124.70 ..
Both his parents and that high-minded wife, / having searched for him diligently, all fell under the power of death.
5.123.71
na vijñātaśca tatrasthaḥ saṃnyastaḥ sa mahāvrataḥ ..
saṃsārabhāvanirmuktastasmānmunisamāgamāt . 71 ..
And he, remaining there, was not noticed; renounced, of great vows, / freed from the feeling of worldly existence because of that meeting with the sages.
5.123.72
kasyacittvatha kālasya tena mārgeṇa te punaḥ ..
tīrthayātrāprasaṃgena munayaḥ samupasthitāḥ .. 72 ..
Then, after some time, by that same path again, / the sages arrived in the course of their pilgrimage to sacred fords.
5.123.73
procuścaitaddvijāḥ sthānaṃ yatra caureṇa saṃgamaḥ ..
āsīdvastena raudreṇa brāhmaṇacchadmadhāriṇā .. 73 ..
And the twice-born said: 'This is the place where the encounter with the thief / occurred, with that terrible one wearing the disguise of a brahmin.'
5.123.74
tato valmīkamadhyasthaṃ śuśruvurnisvanaṃ ca te ..
jāṭaghoṭetimaṃtrasya tasyaiva ca mahātmanaḥ .. 74 ..
Then they heard a sound from within the anthill, / of the mantra "jāṭaghoṭā", belonging to that very same great-souled one.
5.123.75
atha bhūmyāṃ prahārāste sasvanuḥ sarvatodiśam ..
te valmīkaṃ tato dṛṣṭvā taṃ cauraṃ tasya madhyagam .. 75 ..
Then strikes upon the ground resounded in all directions; / then, having seen the anthill and that thief situated in its midst,
5.123.76
japamānaṃ tu taṃ mantraṃ pulahena niveditaḥ ..
hāsyarūpeṇa yastasya siddhiṃ ca dvijasattamāḥ .. 76 ..
muttering that mantra which had been taught by Pulaha / in the form of a joke, and [seeing] his perfection, O best of twice-born—
5.123.77
yadvā satyamidaṃ proktamācāryaiḥ śāstradṛṣṭibhiḥ ..
stokaṃ siddhikṛte tasya yasmātsiddhirupasthitā .. 77 ..
Or rather, this was truthfully spoken by the teachers who see through the scriptures: / a little is sufficient for perfection, since perfection was attained by him.
5.123.78
mantre tīrthe dvije deve daivajñe bheṣaje gurau ..
yādṛśī bhāvanā yasya siddhirbhavati tādṛśī .. .. 78 ..
Toward a mantra, a sacred ford, a twice-born, a deity, an astrologer, medicine, and a guru— / whatever kind of mental disposition one has, such perfection comes to be.
5.123.79
atha taṃ vīkṣya saṃsiddhaṃ kumantreṇāpi taskaram ..
te viprā vismayāviṣṭāḥ kṛpāviṣṭā viśeṣataḥ .. 79 ..
Then, seeing that thief accomplished even by means of a bad mantra, / those brahmins were filled with wonder, and especially filled with compassion.
5.123.80
samādhyarhaistato dravyaistailaistadbheṣajairapi .. 6.124.80 ..
Then, with substances fit for samādhi, with oils and with remedies,

Lohajaṅgha said: / 'Why have you not gone, having been released by me, O best of twice-born? / I will not take anything belonging to you by any means. / Since [I acted] for the sake of family, therefore depart now according to your desire.'
5.123.83
