akasmādeva rogo'yaṃ calituṃ naiva ca kṣamaḥ ..13..
"What is this reason on account of which my body has become like this? / This disease [has appeared] all of a sudden, and I am not able to move at all."

.. brāhmaṇa uvāca .. ..

dṛṣṭvā'mūṃśca paśūnbhūpa mānuṣaṃ bhāvyameva hi .. 21 ..
At the beginning of night, O best of kings, dwelling was sought by me; / and having seen these animals, O king, a human presence seemed certain.
5.132.22
tataścātra prasupto'haṃ paśūnāmaṃtike nṛpa ..22..
And then I fell asleep here near the animals, O king.
5.132.23
atha yāvatprabhāte'haṃ prapaśyāmi nijāṃ tanum..
tāvatkuṣṭhādirogaiśca samaṃtātparivāritām .. 23 ..
Now, as soon as I looked at my own body at dawn, / it was completely surrounded on all sides by diseases such as leprosy.
5.132.24
nānyatkiṃcinnṛpaśreṣṭha kāraṇaṃ vedmi tattvataḥ ..
kimetena nṛpaśreṣṭha bhūyobhūyaḥ prajalpatā ..
bahutvātkuru tasmānme yathā syānnīrujā tanuḥ.. 24 ..

5.132.25
tataste vyādhayaḥ proktā ajāpālena bhūbhujā ..
kenājñā khaṃḍitā me'dya ko vadhyaḥ sāṃprataṃ mama .. 25 ..
Then those diseases were addressed by King Ajāpāla: / "By whom has my command been broken today? Who deserves to be put to death by me now?"
5.132.26
.. vyādhaya ūcuḥ .. ..
mā kopaṃ kuru bhūpāla kṛtye'smiṃstvaṃ kathaṃcana ..
yasmādeṣa dvijo viṣṭaḥ sāṃprataṃ vyādhibhistribhiḥ ..26...
The diseases said: / "Do not become angry at all in this matter, O king, / for this brahmin has now been entered by three diseases:
5.132.27
rājayakṣmā ca kuṣṭhaṃ ca pāmā ca dvijasattama ..
ete saṃsargajā doṣāstrayo'dyāpi prakīrtitāḥ .. 27 ..
consumption, leprosy, and scabies, O best of brahmins. / These three faults are declared even today to arise from contact.
5.132.28
eteṣāṃ prathamau yau dvau nivṛttirahitau smṛtau ..
auṣadhaiścaiva maṃtraiśca śeṣā nāśaṃ vrajaṃti ca ..28..
Of these, the first two are traditionally considered incurable; / but the remaining ones go to destruction through medicines and mantras.
5.132.29
ābhyāṃ ca brahmaśāposti yena nāsti nivartanam ..
tasmādatra nṛpaśreṣṭha kuru yatte kṣamaṃ bhavet ..29...
And in these two there is a brahmin's curse, because of which there is no removal; / therefore, O best of kings, do what may be suitable here.
5.132.30
etena brāhmaṇenaite spṛṣṭā rājaṃstrayopi ca..
tasmāttāvattanuṃ cāsyāviśatāṃ tāvasaṃśayam..6.133.30..
All three of these were touched by this brahmin, O king; / therefore, those two have undoubtedly entered his body.
5.132.30_1
aparaṃ śṛṇu bhūpāla vacanaṃ no mukhāccyutam..
hitāya sarvajaṃtūnāṃ tava śreyovivṛddhaye..3...
Hear another word, O king, fallen from our mouths / for the benefit of all creatures and for the increase of your welfare:
5.132.32
yatra sthānaṃ ciraṃ tatra medinyāṃ vihitaṃ nṛpa.
purīṣaṃ ca samāviddhā tenaiṣā medinī drutam..32..
Where a place has been maintained on the earth for a long time, O king, / this earth quickly becomes filled with excrement."
5.132.33
kālāṃtarepi ye martyā bhūmyāmasyāṃ samāgatāḥ.
bhūmeḥ sparśaṃ kariṣyaṃti te bhaviṣyaṃti cedṛśāḥ..33..
"In the course of time, whichever mortals arrive on this ground
and touch the ground, will likewise become such."
5.132.34
vayaṃ śeṣā mahārāja vyādhayo ye vyavasthitāḥ.
tvayā muktvā bhaviṣyāmo mantrauṣadhavaśānugāḥ ..34..
"The rest of us diseases who remain, O great king,
released by you, will become subject to mantras and medicinal herbs."
5.132.35
naitau punastu durgrāhyau brahmaśāpa samudbhavau ..35..
"These two, however, arising from a brahmin's curse, are difficult to curb."
5.132.36
tacchrutvā pārthivaḥ so'pi tasminsthāne vyavasthitaḥ ..
taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ punaḥ prāha na bhetavyaṃ tvayā dvija .. 36 ..
Having heard that, the king, remaining in that place,
spoke again to that brahmin: "Do not fear, O twice-born.
5.132.37
ahaṃ tvāṃ rakṣayiṣyāmi vyādherasmātsudāruṇāt ..
atra tasmātpratīkṣasva kañcitkālaṃ mamājñayā .. 37 ...
I will protect you from this terrible disease;
therefore, wait here for some time by my command."
5.132.38
evamuktvā tataścakre tadarthaṃ sumahattapaḥ ..
ārādhayanprabhaktyā ca samyaktāṃ kṣetradevatām ..38..
Having spoken thus, he then performed great austerity for that purpose,
worshipping that deity of the sacred field with deep devotion and in the proper manner,
5.132.39
muṃḍenātharvaśīrṣeṇa divārātramataṃdritaḥ..
kṣetrapālotthasūktena vāstusūktena ca dvijāḥ..39..
day and night without slackening, O brahmins, with the Muṇḍa-[Upaniṣad], the Atharvaśīrṣa,
with the hymn to the Guardian of the Field, and with the hymn to the Vāstu,
5.132.39_2
siddhārthai raktapuṣpaiśca guggulena sudhūpitaiḥ..
homaṃ kurvannṛpaḥ paścānnīlarudrānviśeṣataḥ..6.133.4...
offering oblation with white mustard seeds, red flowers, and well-fumigated bdellium gum,
the king then especially [reciting] the Nīlarudras.
5.132.41
atha naktāvasānena tasya homasya cotthitā..
bhittvā dharātalaṃ devī mantrākṛṣṭā vinirgatā..41..
Then, at the end of the night, arising from that oblation,
the goddess burst through the surface of the earth and emerged, drawn by the mantras.
5.132.42
devatā tasya kṣetrasya tataḥ provāca taṃ nṛpam..42..
Then the deity of that sacred field spoke to that king:
5.132.43
ekāhaṃ tava bhūpāla homasyāsya prabhāvataḥ ..
vinirgatā dharāpṛṣṭhātkṣetrasyāsyādhipā smṛtā .. 43 ..
"I alone, O protector of the earth, through the power of this oblation of yours,
have emerged from the surface of the earth; I am known as the sovereign of this sacred field.
5.132.44
tasmādvada mahābhāga yatte kṛtyaṃ karomyaham ..
parāṃ tuṣṭimanuprāptā tasmādbrūhi yadīpsitam .. 44 ..
Therefore, declare, O fortunate one, what duty I may perform for you.
I have attained supreme satisfaction; therefore, speak what is desired."
5.132.45
.. rājovāca .. ..
atra sthāne sadā stheyaṃ tvayā devi viśeṣataḥ ..
vyādhisaṃsargajo doṣo bhūmerasyā yathā vrajet .. .. 45 ..
The king said:
"O goddess, you should especially dwell in this place forever,
so that the fault born of contact with diseases may depart from this earth.
5.132.46
adyaprabhṛti deveśi tathā nītirvidhīyatām ..
no cedasyāḥ prasaṃgena prabhaviṣyaṃti mānavāḥ .. 46 ..
From this day forward, O ruler of gods, let such a rule be established;
otherwise, by contact with it, human beings will become
5.132.47
vyādhigrastā yathā vipro yo'yaṃ saṃdṛśyate puraḥ ..
mayātra vyādhayaḥ kālaṃ ciraṃ saṃsthāpitā yataḥ ..
bhaviṣyati ca me doṣo no ceddevi na saṃśayaḥ .. 47 ..
afflicted by disease, like this brahmin who is seen before us.
Since diseases were kept here by me for a long time,
fault will come upon me otherwise, O goddess, without a doubt.
5.132.48
tathāyaṃ brāhmaṇo rogāttvatprasādātsureśvari ..
mukto bhavatu medinyāmatra stheyaṃ sadā tvayā ..48..
Likewise, may this brahmin be freed from disease by your grace, O ruler of gods;
and you should dwell perpetually here on this earth."
5.132.49
.. kṣetradevatovāca .. ..
etatsthānaṃ mayā sarvaṃ vyādhidoṣavivarjitam ..
vihitaṃ sarvadaivātra sthāsye'hamiha sarvadā ..49..
The deity of the sacred field said:
"This entire place has been made free from the fault of diseases by me;
I shall dwell here forever at all times.
5.132.50
sāṃprataṃ yo'tra me sthāne vyādhigrastaḥ sameṣyati ..
pūjayiṣyati māṃ bhaktyā nīrogaḥ sa bhaviṣyati .. 6.133.50 ..
Now, whoever, afflicted with disease, approaches my place here
and worships me with devotion, will become free from disease.
5.132.51
tasmādadya dvijeṃdro'yaṃ māṃ pūjayatu sādaram ..
bhaktyā paramayā yuktaḥ śucirbhūtvā samāhitaḥ.. 51 ..
Therefore, let this best of brahmins worship me respectfully today,
endowed with supreme devotion, having become pure and concentrated in mind.
5.132.52
atra kṣetre parā'nyāsti vikhyātā caṃdrakūpikā. ..
tasyāṃ snātu yathānyāyaṃ nityameva mahīpate .. 52 ..
In this sacred field there is another celebrated well, the Candrakūpikā;
let him bathe in it according to rule every day, O lord of the earth,
5.132.53
dakṣaśāpapraśaptena yā caṃdreṇa purā kṛtā ..
svasnānārthaṃ kṣayavyādhipragrastena mahātmanā . 53 ..
which was formerly made by the Moon, when cursed by Dakṣa's curse,
for his own ritual ablution, when that great soul was afflicted with consumption.
5.132.54
tathā khaṇḍaśilānāma devatā cātra tiṣṭhati ..
saubhāgyakūpikāsnānaṃ kṛtvā tāṃ ca prapaśyatu ..54..
Likewise, a deity named Khaṇḍaśilā dwells here;
having taken a ritual ablution in the Saubhāgyakūpikā, let him behold her,
5.132.55
yā kṛtā kāmadevena kuṣṭhagrastena vai purā .
snapanārthaṃ ca kuṣṭhasya vināśāya ca sādaram .. 55..
which was formerly made by Kāmadeva when afflicted with leprosy,
for ceremonial bath and for the destruction of leprosy, with reverence.
5.132.96
tathā cāpsarasāṃ kuṇḍamatrāsti nṛpasattama ..
tatra snātvā raverahni tataḥ pāmā praśāmyati .. 96 ..
And likewise, there is a pool of the apsarases here, O best of kings;
having bathed there on the day of the Sun (Sunday), one's scabies is alleviated."
5.132.96_3
.. sūta uvāca ..
tataḥ sa brāhmaṇaḥ prāpya supuṇyāṃ candrakūpikām ..
snānaṃ kṛtvā ca tāṃ devīṃ pūjayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ ..
yāvanmāsaṃ tato muktaḥ satvaraṃ rājayakṣmaṇā .. 57
Sūta said:
Then that brahmin, having reached the very holy Candrakūpikā
and having taken a ritual ablution, worshipped that goddess with devotion;
within a month he was quickly freed from consumption.
5.132.96_4
tataḥ saubhāgyakūpīṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā kāmavinirmitām ..
tathā snānaṃ vidhāyātha paśyankhaṃḍaśilāṃ ca tām .. 58 ..
Then, having seen that Saubhāgyakūpī fashioned by Kāma,
and having likewise performed a ritual ablution, and beholding that Khaṇḍaśilā,
5.132.96_5
tadvanmāsena nirmuktaḥ kuṣṭhena dvijasattamāḥ ..
tasyā devyāḥ prabhāvena kūpikāyāṃ viśeṣataḥ . 59 ..
in like manner within a month he was freed from leprosy, O best of brahmins,
by the power of that goddess, especially at the well.
5.132.96_6
tataścāpsarasāṃ kuṃḍe snātvaikaṃ ravivāsaram ..
pāmayā saṃparityakto buddhyeva viṣayātmakaḥ .. 6.133.60 ..
Then, having bathed in the pool of the apsarases on a single Sunday,
he was abandoned by scabies, as an intellect attached to sense-objects [is abandoned by attachments].
5.132.96_7
tataḥ sa brāhmaṇo jāto dvādaśārkasamaprabhaḥ ..
toṣeṇa mahatā yukto dattāśīstasya bhūpateḥ .. 61 ..
Then that brahmin became radiant as the twelve suns;
filled with great joy, he bestowed a blessing upon that king,
5.132.96_8
prayayau vāṃchitaṃ deśamanujñātaśca bhūbhujā ..
devatāyāṃ praṇāmaṃ ca tābhyāṃ kṛtvā punaḥpunaḥ .. 62 ..
and, permitted by the king, went to his desired region,
having repeatedly offered bow to both deities.
5.132.96_9
sopi rājā sadoṣāṃstānajārūpānvilokya ca ..
svasyaiva brāhmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ tathā saṃpraharṣitaḥ .. 63 ..
That king also, having seen those [diseases] with their faults in the form of goats,
and having seen his own brahmin thus [cured], was greatly delighted.
5.132.96_10
svayaṃ ca prayayau tatra yatrastho hāṭakeśvaraḥ ..
tenaiva ca śarīreṇa nijakāṃtāsamanvitaḥ ..64 ..
And he himself went to that place where Hāṭakeśvara resides,
in that very body, accompanied by his beloved wife.
5.132.96_11
ajāgṛhe sthitā yasmātsā devī kṣetradevatā ..
ajāgṛhā tataḥ khyātā sarvatraiva dvijottamāḥ .. 65 ..
Because that goddess, the deity of the sacred field, stayed in the house of goats (Ajāgṛha),
she is known everywhere as Ajāgṛhā, O best of brahmins.
5.132.96_12
adyāpi yakṣmaṇā grasto yastāṃ pūjayate naraḥ ..
tainaiva vidhinā samyaksa nīrogo drutaṃ bhavet.. 66 ..
Even today, a man afflicted with consumption who worships her
properly according to that very rite quickly becomes free from disease.
5.132.133
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ ṣaṣṭhe nāgarakhaṇḍe hāṭakeśvarakṣetramāhātmye'jāgṛhotpattimāhātmyavarṇanaṃnāma trayastriṃśaduttaraśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 133 ..
Thus ends the one hundred and thirty-third chapter, entitled "Description of the Origin and Greatness of Ajāgṛhā" in the Greatness of the Sacred Field of Hāṭakeśvara, in the Nāgarakhaṇḍa, the sixth [part] of the auspicious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
