ucchritya dakṣiṇaṃ pāṇiṃ bhramamāṇā itastataḥ .. 22 ..
Then, raising her right hand and wandering here and there in public squares and crossroads, she began to call out aloud:
5.134.23
yadi kaściddvijo jātyā karoti mama sāṃpratam ..
pāṇigrāhaṃ tapo'rddhasya śreyo yacchāmi tasya ca ..23..
“If any brahmin by birth takes my hand in marriage right now, I will grant him the merit of half my austerity!”

tataḥ katipayāhasya prakurvaṃtī ca dīrghikā ..
kuṣṭhavyādhigṛhītena brāhmaṇena pariśrutā .. 25 ..
Then, after some days, Dīrghikā, crying out thus, was heard by a brahmin afflicted with leprosy.
5.134.26
tataḥ provāca mandaṃ sa samāhūya suduḥkhitām .. 26 ..
Then, summoning the deeply grieved woman, he spoke softly:
5.134.27
ahaṃ tvāmudvahāmyadya kṛtvā pāṇigrahaṃ tava ..
yadi madvacanaṃ sarvaṃ sarvadaivānutiṣṭhasi .. 27 .. ..
“I will wed you today, taking your hand in marriage, if you always follow all my instructions.”
5.134.28

5.134.29
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
tatastasyāḥ kumāryāḥ sa pāṇiṃ jagrāha dakṣiṇam ..
gṛhyoktena vidhānena devāgnigurusaṃnidhau .. 29 ..
Sūta said: / Then he took the right hand of that maiden according to the rite prescribed in the householder manuals, in the presence of the gods, fire, and the preceptor.
5.134.30
atha sā prāha bhūyo'pi vivāhakṛtamaṃgalā ..
ādeśaṃ dehi me nātha yaṃ karomi tavādhunā .. 6.135.30 ..
Then, having completed the auspicious marriage ceremonies, she spoke again: “Give me a command, O my lord, which I may now fulfill for you.”
5.134.31

The husband said: / “O beautiful one, I wish to bathe in the sixty-eight sacred fords with your assistance. If you are able, do that.”
5.134.32
bāḍhamityeva sā procya tatastūrṇaṃ pativratā ..
tatpramāṇaṃ dṛḍhaṃ kṛtvā ramyaṃ vaṃśakuṭīrakam .. 32 ..
Saying “So be it,” that devoted wife quickly made a charming, sturdy bamboo basket of suitable measure,
5.134.33
mṛdu tūlasamāyuktaṃ tataḥ prāha nijaṃ patim ..
kṛtāṃjalipuṭā bhūtvā prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā .. 33 ..
furnished with soft cotton; and then, folding her hands in reverence, with a gladdened inner heart, she spoke to her husband:
5.134.34
etattava kṛte ramyaṃ kṛtaṃ vaṃśakuṭīrakam ..
mama nāthāruhāśu tvaṃ yena kṛtvātha mūrdhani ..
nayāmi sarvatīrtheṣu kṣetreṣu suśubheṣu ca .. 34 ..
“For your sake this charming bamboo basket has been made. O my lord, climb in quickly so that, placing it upon my head, I may carry you to all the sacred fords and very auspicious sacred fields.”
5.134.35
tataḥ kuṣṭhī prahṛṣṭātmā śanairutthāya bhūtalāt ..
tayā coddhṛtadehaḥ sansupto vaṃśakuṭīrake .. 35 ..
Then the leper, glad at heart, gently rose from the ground and, his body lifted by her, slept in the bamboo basket.
5.134.36
tatastaṃ mastake kṛtvā sarvatīrthe yathāsukham ..
sarvakṣetreṣu babhrāma snāpayantī nijaṃ patim .. 36 ..
Then, placing him upon her head, she wandered at ease to all the sacred fords and through all the sacred fields, bathing her husband.
5.134.37
yathā yathā sa cakre'tha snānaṃ tīrtheṣu kuṣṭhabhāk ..
tathātathāsya gātreṣu tejo vṛddhiṃ pragacchati ..37..
As the leper bathed in the sacred fords, so did the brilliance in his limbs increase.
5.134.38
tataḥ krameṇa sā sādhvī bhramamāṇā mahītale ..
hāṭakeśvaraje kṣetre saṃprāptā rajanī mukhe .. 38 ..
Then gradually, wandering over the surface of the earth, that virtuous woman arrived at nightfall in the sacred field of Hāṭakeśvara.
5.134.39
klāntā vaiklavyamāpannā bhārākrāntā pativratā ..
nidrāndhā niśvasantī ca praskhalantī padepade .. 39 ..
Exhausted, overcome with weakness, weighed down by the burden, that devoted wife was blinded by sleep, sighing, and stumbling at every step.
5.134.40
atha tatra pradeśe tu māṇḍavyo munipuṃgavaḥ ..
śūlāropitagātrastu saṃtiṣṭhati suduḥkhitaḥ .. 6.135.40 ..
Now in that region, Māṇḍavya, the foremost among sages, was remaining in extreme agony, his body impaled on a stake.
5.134.41
atha sā taṃ samāsādya śūlaṃ rātrau pativratā ..
nijagātreṇa bhārārttā gacchamānā mahāsatī .. 41 ..
Then that great virtuous wife, going at night afflicted by the burden, approached the stake with her body.
5.134.42
tayā saṃcālitaḥ so'tha māṃḍavyo munipuṃgavaḥ ..
parāṃ pīḍāṃ samāsādya tataḥ prāha suduḥkhitaḥ ..42..
Jolted then by her, that foremost of sages, Māṇḍavya, experiencing intense torment, spoke in deep agony:
5.134.43
kenedaṃ pāpmanā śalyaṃ mamāṃtaḥ paricālitam ..
yenāhaṃ duḥkhayukto'pi bhūyo duḥkhāspadīkṛtaḥ .. 43 ..
“By what sinful person has this stake been shaken inside me, whereby, though already full of misery, I have been made the seat of misery once more?”
5.134.44
.. dīrghikovāca .. ..
na mayā tvaṃ mahābhāga nidropahatayā dṛśā ..
dṛṣṭastena parispṛṣṭo hyaspṛśyaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ .. 44 ..
Dīrghikā said: / “O illustrious one, because my sight was impaired by sleep, you were not seen by me; hence you were touched, O untouchable one, O greatest committer of sins!
5.134.45
na tvayā sadṛśaścānyaḥ pāpātmāsti dharātale ..
śirasyudbhūtaśūlo'pi yo mṛtyuṃ nādhigacchati .. .. 45 ..
There is no other sinful soul equal to you on the surface of the earth, who, even with a stake piercing out through your head, does not meet death!
5.134.46
ahaṃ pativratā mūḍha vahāmi śirasā dhṛtam ..
tīrthayātrākṛte kāṃtaṃ vikalāṃgaṃ suvallabham .. 46 ..
O fool, I am a devoted wife carrying upon my head my beloved husband, who is deformed of limb, for the sake of a pilgrimage to sacred fords.
5.134.47
kasmāttasyāstiraskāraṃ mama yacchasi niṣṭhuram..
ajñātāṃ mūḍhabuddhiḥ sanviśeṣānmānuṣodbhavām .. 47 ..
Why do you cast harsh insults at me, an unknown woman, you fool, and especially one born human?”
5.134.48
.. māṇḍavya uvāca .. ..
ahaṃ yādṛktvayā proktastādṛgeva na saṃśayaḥ ..
pāpātmā mūḍhabuddhiśca aspṛśyaḥ sarvadehinām .. 48 ..
Māṇḍavya said: / “Just as I was described by you, exactly so am I, without doubt: a sinful soul, foolish-minded, and untouchable to all living beings.
5.134.49
yadi prātastavāyaṃ ca bharttā jīvati niṣṭhure ..
yena me janitā pīḍā prāṇāṃtakaraṇī dṛḍhā .. 49 ..
Yet, O cruel woman, if this husband of yours—by whom intense pain, bringing an end to life, has been inflicted on me—lives in the morning,
5.134.50
tasmādeṣa tavābhīṣṭaḥ spṛṣṭaḥ sūryasya raśmibhiḥ ..
mayā śaptaḥ parityāgaṃ jīvitasya kariṣyati .. 6.135.50 ..
then, cursed by me, this beloved of yours, touched by the rays of the sun, shall abandon life!”
5.134.51
.. dīrghikovāca .. ..
yadyevaṃ maraṇaṃ patyuḥ prabhāte saṃbhaviṣyati ..
madīyasya tataḥ prātarnodgamiṣyati bhāskaraḥ .. 51 ..
Dīrghikā said: / “If such death will come to my husband at dawn, then at dawn the sun shall not rise!”
5.134.52
evamuktvā tataḥ sātha niṣasāda dharātale ..
bhūmau tadbhartṛsaṃyuktaṃ muktvā vaṃśakuṭīrakam .. 52 ..
Having spoken thus, she set down upon the earth that bamboo basket with her husband and sat upon the ground.
5.134.53
atha tāṃ prāha kuṣṭhī sa pipāsā saṃpravartate ..
tasmāttoyaṃ samānehi pānārthamatiśītalam .. 53 ..
Then that leper said to her: “Thirst has arisen; therefore bring very cool water for drinking.”
5.134.54
tathaiva sā samākarṇya bharturādeśamutsukā ..
itastataśca babhrāma jalārthaṃ na prapaśyati ..
na ca niryāti dūraṃ sā tyaktvāraṇye tathāvidham .. 54 ..
Hearing her husband’s command, eager [to serve], she wandered here and there, but saw no water; nor did she go far, abandoning him in such a state in the wilderness.
5.134.55
bhartāraṃ śvāpadotthaṃ ca bhayaṃ hṛdi vitanvatī ..
upaviśya tato bhūmau spṛṣṭvā pādau patestadā ..
provāca dīrghikā vākyaṃ tāravākyena duḥkhitā .. 55 ..
Feeling fear in her heart for her husband, arising on account of wild beasts, / she then sat down on the ground, touched her husband's feet, / and the tall woman, stricken with sorrow, spoke these words in a loud voice:
5.134.56
pativratā tvamācīrṇaṃ yadi samyaṅmayā sphuṭam ..
tena satyena bhūpṛṣṭhānnirgacchatu jalaṃ śubham .. 56 ..
"If the vow of devotion to my husband has been truly and properly observed by me, / by that truth let auspicious water burst forth from the earth's surface!"
5.134.57
evamuktvā jaghānātha pādāghātena medinīm ..
kāntabhaktiṃ puraskṛtya tasya jīvitavāṃchayā .. 57 ..
Having spoken thus, she then struck the earth with a kick of her foot, / prioritizing devotion to her beloved husband, out of a desire for his life.
5.134.58
etasminnantare toyaṃ pādāghātādanantataram ..
niṣkrāṃtaṃ nirmalaṃ svādu māṇḍavyasya ca paśyataḥ .. 58 ..
At that moment, from that kick of her foot, an endless flow of water / came forth, clear and sweet, right before Māṇḍavya's eyes.
5.134.59
tatastaṃ snāpayāmāsa tasmiṃstoye śramāturam ..
apāyayattataḥ paścātsvayaṃ snātvā papau jalam .. 59 ..
Then she bathed him, afflicted with exhaustion, in that water; / after that she gave him water to drink, and having bathed herself, she drank the water.
5.134.60
etasminnaṃtare sūryaḥ pativratakṛtādbhayāt ..
nābhyudeti samutpannastataḥ kālātyayo mahān .. 6.135.60 ..
Meanwhile, the sun, out of fear caused by the devoted wife, / did not rise, and a great lapse of time ensued.
5.134.61
atha rātriṃ samālokya dīrghāṃ ye kāmukā janāḥ ..
te sarve tuṣṭimāpannāstathā ca kula striyaḥ .. 61 ..
Then, observing the long night, lustful people— / all of them were filled with delight, and so were unfaithful women.
5.134.62
kauśikā rākṣasāścāpi corā jārāśca ye narāḥ ..
te sarve procuḥ saṃhṛṣṭāḥ samāliṃgya parasparam .. 62..
Owls, rākṣasas, and men who were thieves and paramours— / all of them, overjoyed, embraced one another and said:
5.134.63
adyāsmākaṃ vidhistuṣṭo bhagavānmanmathastathā ..
yena dīrghā kṛtā rātrirnāśaṃ nītaśca bhāskaraḥ .. 63 ..
"Today fate is pleased with us, as is Lord Kāmadeva, / by whom the night has been lengthened and the sun brought to destruction!"
5.134.64
ye punarbrāhmaṇāḥ śāṃtā yajñakarmasamudyatāḥ ..
te sarve duḥkhamāpannāḥ sūryodayavinākṛtāḥ .. 64 ..
Those peaceful brahmins, however, who were intent on sacrificial rites, / all fell into sorrow, deprived of the rising of the sun.
5.134.65
na kaścidyajanaṃ cakre yājanaṃ na ca saddvijaḥ ..
na śrāddhaṃ na ca saṃkalpaṃ na svādhyāyaṃ kathaṃcana .. .. 65 ..
No one performed sacrifices, nor did any good twice-born officiate at sacrifices; / neither ancestral rites nor ritual resolves nor sacred recitation occurred at all,
5.134.66
na snānaṃ na ca dānaṃ ca lokayātrāṃ viśeṣataḥ ..
vyavahāraṃ na kṛtyaṃ ca kiṃciddharmasamudbhavam .. 66 ..
nor ritual ablution nor gifting, especially ordinary worldly affairs, / commerce, or any duty arising from dharma.
5.134.67
etasminnantare devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ .
paraṃ dauḥsthyaṃ samāpannā yajñabhāgavivarjitāḥ .. 67 ..
Meanwhile, all the gods led by Śakra / fell into extreme distress, deprived of their portions of sacrificial offerings.
5.134.68
tato bhāskaramāsādya ūcurduḥkhasamanvitāḥ ..
kasmānnodgamanaṃ deva prakaroṣi divākara .. .. 68 ..
Then, approaching the sun, filled with grief, they said: / "O god, O maker of daylight, why do you not make your rising?
5.134.69
etattvayā vinā sarvaṃ jagadvyākulatāṃ gatam .. 69 ..
Without you, this entire world has fallen into confusion!

tasmāllokahitārthāya tvamudgaccha yathāpurā ..
agniṣṭomādikā yajñā vartaṃte yena bhūtale .. 6.135.70 ..
Therefore, for the welfare of the world, rise as before, / so that sacrifices such as the Agniṣṭoma may take place on the face of the earth."
5.134.71
.. sūrya uvāca . ..

5.134.72
yena tadvākyamāsādya pravarttāmi yathāsukham ..
anyathā māṃ śapetkruddhā nūnaṃ sā hi pativratā .. 72 ..
so that, obtaining her permission, I may proceed as I please; / otherwise, enraged, that devoted wife would surely curse me!
5.134.73
evaṃ sā tapasā yuktā protkṛṣṭaṃ hi surottamāḥ ..
pativratātvamādhatte tathānyadaparaṃ mahat .. 73 ..
Endowed with such austerity, O best of gods, / she possesses exalted devotion to her husband, as well as another great [power].
5.134.74
kastasyā vacanaṃ śaktaḥ kartumevamato'nyathā ..
etasmātkāraṇādbhīto nodgacchāmi kathaṃcana.. 74 ..
Who is able to act contrary to her word? / Afraid for this reason, I do not rise by any means.
5.134.79
na tatkratusahasreṇa yajaṃtaḥ prāpnuyuḥ phalam ..
pativratātvamāpannā yatstrī viṃdati kevalam .. 79 ..
Those who sacrifice with a thousand rituals cannot attain that fruit / which a woman who has attained devotion to her husband obtains alone."
5.134.79_1
tataste vibudhāḥ sarve gatvā tatkṣetramuttamam ..
procustāṃ dīrghikāṃ vākyairmṛdubhiḥ purataḥ sthitāḥ .. 76 ..
Then all those gods, having gone to that excellent sacred field, / stood before that tall woman and spoke to her with gentle words:
5.134.79_2
tvayā pativrate sūryo yanniṣiddho na tatkṛtam ..
śubhaṃ yato hatāḥ sarvā bhūtale śobhanāḥ kriyāḥ ..77..
"O devoted wife, that the sun was forbidden by you was not well done, / since all auspicious rites on the earth's surface have been destroyed.

tasmādudgacchatu prājñe tvadvākyāttīkṣṇadīdhitiḥ ..
yajñakriyā viśeṣeṇa yena vartaṃti bhūtale .. 78 ..
Therefore, O wise woman, let the hot-rayed [sun] rise at your word, / so that sacrificial rites in particular may proceed on the earth's surface."
5.134.79_4
.. pativratovāca ..
ayaṃ ca me patiḥ sadyaḥ prāṇebhyo'pi ca yaḥ priyaḥ ..

śaptaścānena duṣṭena māṃḍavyena supāpmanā ..
kāryaṃ vināpi nirdiṣṭastadbrūyāṃ bhāskaraṃ katham .. 6.135.80 ..
He was cursed by that wicked, exceedingly sinful Māṇḍavya, / ordained [to die] without even any fault. How, then, could I tell the sun [to rise]?
5.134.81
udayārthaṃ na me yajñaiḥ kāryaṃ kiṃcinna cāparaiḥ ..
