prasanno'haṃ pradāsyāmi tavādya śaśiśekharaḥ .. 13 ..
"Request a boon, O auspicious lady, that which is in your heart; / pleased am I, the moon-crested lord, and I will grant it to you today."
5.144.14

api mṛtyudine prāpte yo'sminnāyatane śubhe .. 17 ..
he too shall be free from illness for a year. / Even if the day of death has arrived, whoever comes to this auspicious sanctuary
5.144.18
āgamiṣyati taṃ mṛtyurdūrātparihariṣyati ..
evamuktvātha sā vāṇī virarāma tataḥ param .. 18 ..
will be avoided from afar by Death." / Having spoken thus, that voice fell silent thereafter.
5.144.19
aditiścāpi santuṣṭā hataśeṣānsutāṃstataḥ ..
samānīyātha talliṃgaṃ teṣāmeva nyadarśayat ..
kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṃ māhātmyaṃ yadvaroditam .. 19 ..
Aditi, too, highly pleased, brought her surviving sons / and showed them that very liṅga; / she told them all that māhātmya as it had been declared in the boon.

svargabhogasamāyuktā nandanāṃtarvyavasthitāḥ .. 21 ..
where those Dānavas, rejoiced, were situated in the auspicious position of Śakra, / endowed with the pleasures of heaven, staying within the Nandana garden.

atha te dānavā dṛṣṭvā saṃprāptāṃstridivaukasaḥ ..
sahasā saṃgarārthāya nānāśastradharānbahūn .. 22 ..
Then those Dānavas, seeing that the many gods had arrived / all at once for battle, bearing various weapons,
5.144.23
rathavaryānsamāruhya dhṛtaśastrāstravarmaṇaḥ ..
yuddhārthaṃ sammukhā jagmurgarjamānā ghanā iva .. 23 ..
mounted excellent chariots, holding weapons, missiles, and armour, / and marched forward for battle, roaring like clouds.

tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṃ devānāṃ dānavaiḥ saha ..
roṣapreritacittānāṃ mṛtyuṃ kṛtvā nivartanam .. 24 ..

5.144.25
tataste vibudhāḥ sarve haralabdhavarāstadā ..
jaghnurdaityānasaṃkhyātācchitaiḥ śastrairanekadhā .. 25 ..
Then all those gods, who had received boons from Hara at that time, / slew innumerable Daityas in many ways with sharp weapons.
5.144.26
hataśeṣāśca ye teṣāṃ te tyaktvā tridaśālayam ..
palāyanakṛtotsāhāḥ praviṣṭā makarālayam .. 26 ..
Those among them who were left unslain abandoned the abode of the thirty [gods] / and, eager to flee, entered the abode of the sea-monsters.
5.144.27
tataḥ śakraḥ samāpede svarājyaṃ dānavairhṛtam ..
yadāsītpūrvakāle tatsamagraṃ hatakaṇṭakam .. 27 ..
Then Śakra regained his kingdom that had been seized by the Dānavas, / exactly as it had been in earlier times, completely freed of thorns.
5.144.28
tataste dānavāḥ śeṣā jñātvā talliṃgasaṃbhavam ..
māhātmyaṃ vṛṣanāthasya kṣetrasyāsyodbhavasya ca .. 28 ..
Then the remaining Dānavas learned of the power of that liṅga, / the māhātmya of the Lord of the Bull, and the origin of this sacred field,
5.144.29
śukreṇa kathitaṃ sarvaṃ māghakṛṣṇe niśāgame ..
caturdaśyāṃ śucirbhūtvā yastalliṃgaṃ prapūjayet ..
kālāghrāto'pi na prāṇaiḥ sa pumāṃstyajyate kvacit ..29..
as all was told by Śukra: "Whoever, becoming pure, worships that liṅga / on the arrival of night on the fourteenth of the dark fortnight of Māgha, / though sniffed by Death, he is never abandoned by his life-breaths.
5.144.30
tasmādyūyaṃ samāsādya talliṃgaṃ taddine niśi ..
pūjayadhvaṃ mahābhāgā yena syurmṛtyuvarjitāḥ .. 6.145.30 ..
Therefore, O fortunate ones, approach that liṅga on that day at night / and worship it, so that you may be free from death
5.144.31
yāvatsaṃvatsarasyātaṃ satyametanmayoditam ..
yathā te devasaṃghāśca tatprabhāvādasaṃśayam .. 31 ..
until the end of the year; this has been truthfully declared by me, / just as the hosts of gods [became], through its power, without a doubt."
5.144.32
atha taṃ dānavendrāṇāṃ maṃtraṃ jñātvā sureśvaraḥ ..
nāradādbrāhmaṇaḥ putrādbhayatrastamanāstataḥ .. 32 ..
Then the lord of the gods, learning of that counsel of the lords of the Dānavas / from Nārada, the son of Brahmā, became terrified in mind;
5.144.33
maṃtraṃ cakre samaṃ devaistatra devasya rakṣaṇe ..
yathā syādudyamaḥ samyaktasminnahani sarvadā .. 33 ..
he held counsel together with the gods for guarding the god there, / so that there would be a proper effort on that day always.
5.144.34
koṭayastu trayastriṃśaddevānāṃ sāyudhāstataḥ ..
rakṣārthaṃ tasya liṃgasya tasminkṣetre vyavasthitāḥ ..
māghakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṃ susaṃnaddhāḥ prahāriṇaḥ .. 34 ..
Then thirty-three crores of gods, bearing weapons,
stationed themselves in that sacred field to protect that liṅga,
fully armed and ready to strike on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of Māgha.
5.144.35
atha te dānavā dṛṣṭvā tāndevāṃstatra saṃsthitān ..
bhayasaṃtrastamanaso dudruvuḥ sarvato diśam .. 35 ..
Then those Dānavas, seeing those gods stationed there,
their minds terrified with fear, fled in all directions.
5.144.36
atha prabhāte vimale prodgate ravimaṇḍale ..
bhūya eva surāḥ sarve maṃtraṃ cakruḥ parasparam .. 36 ..
Then, when the morning was bright and the sun's orb had risen,
all the gods took counsel among themselves once more:
5.144.37
yadyetatkṣetramutsṛjya gamiṣyāmaḥ surālayam ..
liṃgametatsamabhyetya pūjayiṣyaṃti dānavāḥ .. 37 ..
"If we abandon this sacred field and go to the abode of the gods,
the Dānavas will approach this liṅga and worship it.
5.144.38
tato'vadhyā bhaviṣyaṃti te'pi sarve yathā vayam ..
tasmādatraiva tiṣṭhāmastrayastriṃśatpranāyakāḥ .. 38 ..
Then they too will all become invulnerable, just as we are.
Therefore, let us, the thirty-three leaders,
5.144.39
koṭīnāmeva sarveṣāṃ śeṣā gacchantu tatra ca ..
sahasrākṣeṇa saṃyuktāḥ svarge svapararakṣakāḥ .. 39 ..
of all the crores, remain right here; and let the rest go there
with the thousand-eyed [Indra] to heaven, guarding their own and others."
5.144.39_1
tato'ṣṭau vasavastatra dvādaśārkāstathaiva ca ..
ekādaśāpare rudrā nāsatyau dvau ca sundarau ..6.145.4...
Then the eight Vasus [stayed] there, and likewise the twelve Ādityas,
eleven other Rudras, and the two handsome Nāsatyas;
5.144.41
ete talliṃgarakṣārthaṃ tasminkṣetre vyavasthitāḥ..
śeṣāḥ śakrasamāyuktāḥ prajagmustridaśālayam .. 41 ..
these remained stationed in that sacred field to protect that liṅga;
the rest, accompanied by Śakra, went to the abode of the thirty [gods].
5.144.42
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
evaṃ prabhāvaṃ liṃgaṃ tu devadevasya śūlinaḥ ..
bhavadbhiḥ paripṛṣṭaṃ yadadityā sthāpitaṃ purā .. 42 ..
Sūta said:
Such was the power of the liṅga of the god of gods, the trident-bearer,
about which you asked, which had formerly been installed by Aditi.
5.144.43
yasmānna vidyate mṛtyustena dṛṣṭena dehinām ..
amarākhyaṃ tato liṃgaṃ vikhyātaṃ bhuvanatraye .. 43 ..
Because mortals see no death upon beholding it,
the liṅga is therefore renowned in the three worlds by the name 'Amara'.
5.144.44
yasmindeśe'pi sā kanyā hatā tena dvijanmanā ..
jābālinā sukruddhena tasya devasya maṃdire .. .. 44 ..
In which place, also, that maiden was struck down by that twice-born,
by the furiously enraged Jābāli, in the temple of that god;
5.144.45
āsīttatra dine kṛṣṇā māghamāsa caturdaśī ..
tena no nidhanaṃ prāptā suhatā'pi tapasvinī .. 45 ..
on that day was the fourteenth [day] of the dark fortnight of the month of Māgha;
therefore she did not meet destruction, though struck down severely, ascetic as she was.
5.144.46
etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṃ tasya liṃgasya sambhavam ..
māhātmyaṃ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāḥ sarvapātakanāśanam .. 46 ..
All this origin of that liṅga has been told to you,
its māhātmya that destroys all sins, O best of brahmins.
5.144.47
yaścaitatpaṭhate bhaktyā tasya liṃgasya saṃnidhau ..
apamṛtyubhayaṃ tasya kathaṃcinnaiva jāyate .. 47 ..
And whoever recites this with devotion in the presence of that liṅga,
no fear of untimely death arises for him in any way.
5.144.48
tasyāgre'sti śubhaṃ kuṇḍaṃ pūritaṃ svacchavāriṇā .
adityā nirmitaṃ devyā snānārthaṃ cātmanaḥ kṛte .. 48 ..
In front of it there is an auspicious pool filled with pure water,
fashioned by goddess Aditi for her own ritual bath.
5.144.49
snānaṃ kṛtvā narastasminyastalliṃgaṃ prapaśyati ..
karoti jāgaraṃ rātrau tasminneva dinedine ..
so'dyāpi vatsaraṃ yāvannāpamṛtyumavāpnuyāt .. 49 ..
A person who, having bathed in it, beholds that liṅga,
and keeps vigil at night, on that very day year after year,
even today will not meet with an untimely death for a year.
5.144.145
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ ṣaṣṭhe nāgarakhaṇḍe hāṭakeśvarakṣetramāhātmye'marakeśvarakṣetramāhātmyavarṇanaṃnāma paṃcacatvāriṃśadadhikaśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ .. 145 .. .. cha ..
Thus ends the one hundred and forty-fifth chapter, named 'Description of the Māhātmya of the Sacred Field of Amarakeśvara' in the Māhātmya of the Sacred Field of Hāṭakeśvara, in the Nāgarakhaṇḍa, the sixth [part] of the auspicious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
