There was no difference or distinction in the body of either one of them. / Then, with regard to past transactions, (43)
5.157.44
pṛṣṭau guhyeṣu sarveṣu pratyakṣeṣu viśeṣataḥ..
vadatastau yathāvṛttaṃ pṛthakpṛthagvyavasthitam .. 44 ..
they were questioned about all private matters and especially about public ones; / both of them recounted what had happened, separately and accurately. (44)
5.157.45
tatastu svajanaiḥ sarvaireko nītva tha cānyataḥ ..
pṛṣṭo gotrānvayaṃ sarvaṃ dvitīyastu tataḥ param .. 45 ..
Then, one of them was taken aside by all the kinsmen / and questioned about his entire lineage and family, and the second one after that. (45)
5.157.46

atha rājā bṛhatsenaḥ sarvāṃstāni damabravīt .. 46 ..
Everything was correctly explained by them in the exact same manner. / Then King Bṛhatsena spoke this to all of them: (46)
5.157.47
patnī cānīyatāṃ tasya maṇibhadrasya vai gṛhāt ..
nijakāntasya vijñāne sā pramāṇaṃ bhaviṣyati .. 47 ..
"Let that wife of Maṇibhadra be brought from the house; / she will be the authoritative witness in recognising her own husband." (47)
5.157.48
tato gatvā ca sā proktā puruṣairnṛpasaṃbhavaiḥ ..
āgaccha kāṃtaṃ jānīhi tvaṃ pramāṇaṃ bhaviṣyasi .. 48 ..
Then royal messengers, having gone, said to her: / "Come, identify your husband; you shall be the authoritative witness." (44)
5.157.49
tataḥ sā vrīḍayā yuktā pracchāditaśirāstataḥ ..
nṛpāgre saṃsthitā proce viddhisamyaṅnijaṃ priyam .. 49 ..
Then she, filled with bashfulness, with her head veiled, / stood before the king and was addressed: "Accurately recognise your own beloved!" (49)
5.157.50
na vayaṃ niścayaṃ vidmo na caite svajanāstava .. 6.158.50 ..
"We do not know with certainty, nor do these relatives of yours."
5.157.51
tataḥ sā cintayāmāsa nijacitte varāṃganā ..
maṇibhadreṇa dagdhāhamīrṣyāvahnigatā'niśam .. 51 ..
Then that excellent woman thought in her own mind:
"I was burned by Maṇibhadra, constantly plunged into the fire of jealousy.
5.157.52
vaṃcayitvā tu pitaraṃ gṛhītāsmi tataḥ param ..
na kiṃcitpāpmanā dattaṃ jalpayitvā dhanaṃ bahu .. .. 52 ..
Having deceived my father, I was taken afterwards;
and nothing was given by that sinner, after he had promised much wealth.
5.157.53
dvitīyena tu me puṃsā martyaloke sukhaṃ kṛtam ..
dattvā vastrāṇi citrāṇi tathaivābharaṇāni ca .. 53 ..
By this second man, however, happiness was brought to me in the mortal world,
having given varied garments and likewise ornaments.
5.157.54
pradāsyati ca tātasya suvarṇaṃ kathitaṃ ca yat ..
yadgṛhṇāmi svahastena maṇibhadraṃ dvitīyakam .. 54 ..
And he will give to my father the gold that was agreed,
if I take the second Maṇibhadra with my own hand."
5.157.55
evaṃ niścitya manasā dṛṣṭvā raktapariplutam ..
prathamaṃ maṇibhadraṃ sā jagṛhe'tha dvitīyakam.. 55 ..
Having thus decided in her mind, seeing him drenched with blood,
she first [rejected] Maṇibhadra and then took the second.
5.157.56
abravīcca tato vākyaṃ sarvalokasya śṛṇvataḥ ..
ahaṃ tātena dattāsya vivāhe agnisaṃnidhau ..56..
And she then spoke words while all the people listened:
"I was given to this man by my father in marriage in the presence of the fire.
5.157.57
dvitīyo'yaṃ durācāro veṣakartā samā gataḥ ..
māṃ ca prārthayate guptāṃ nānācāraiḥ pṛthagvidhaiḥ .. 57 ..
This second man, a villain, an impostor in disguise, has arrived,
and he solicits me in secret by various distinct means."
5.157.58
tatastu pārthivaḥ kruddhastasya śākhāvalaṃbanam ..
ādideśa dvijaśreṣṭhā maṇibhadrasya durmateḥ .. 58 ..
Then the king, enraged, ordered hanging from a branch
for that wicked-minded Maṇibhadra, O best of brahmins.
5.157.59
etasminnaṃtare so'tha vadhakānāṃ samarpitaḥ ..
taṃ vṛkṣaṃ nīyamānastu ślokānetāṃstadāpaṭhat .. 59 ..
In the meantime, he was handed over to the executioners;
and being led to that tree, he then recited these verses:
5.157.60
nirdayatvaṃ tathā drohaṃ kuṭilatvaṃ viśeṣataḥ ..
aśaucaṃ nirghṛṇatvaṃ ca strīṇāṃ doṣāḥ svabhāvajāḥ .. 6.158.60 ..
"Cruelty, betrayal, especially deceitfulness,
impurity, and pitilessness are the innate flaws of women.
5.157.61
antarviṣamayā hyetā bahirbhāge manoramāḥ ..
guñjāphalasamākārā yoṣitaḥ sarva daivahi .. 61 ..
For inside they are full of poison, while attractive on the outside,
women are always indeed like the seeds of the guñjā berry.
5.157.62
uśanā veda yacchāstraṃ yacca veda bṛhaspatiḥ ..
manvādayastathānye'pi strībuddhestatra kiṃca na .. 62 ..
The treatise that Uśanas knows, and that which Bṛhaspati knows,
and Manu and the others too—in comparison to the cunning of women, that is nothing.
5.157.63
pīyūṣamadhare vāsaṃ hṛdi hālāhalaṃ viṣam ..
āsvādyate'dharastena hṛdayaṃ ca prapīḍyate .. 63 ..
Nectar dwells on the lower lip, [but] deadly hālāhala poison is in the heart;
therefore the lip is savored, and the heart is tormented.
5.157.64
alaktako yathā rakto naraḥ kāmī tathaiva ca ..
hṛtasārastathā so'pi pādamūle nipā tyate .. 64 ..
Just as alaktaka dye is red, so is an impassioned man;
and drained of its essence, he too is cast down at the soles of her feet.
5.157.65
saṃsāraviṣavṛkṣasya kukarmakusumasya ca ..
narakārtiphalasyoktā mūlameṣā nitaṃbinī .. 65 ..
Of the poison-tree of worldly existence, whose flower is evil deeds,
and whose fruit is the agony of hell, a slender woman is called the root.
5.157.66
kasya no jāyate trāso dṛṣṭvā dūrā dapi striyam.. 66 ..
In whom does terror not arise upon seeing a woman even from afar?
5.157.67
saṃsārabhramaṇaṃ nārī prathame'pi samāgame ..
vahnipradakṣiṇanyāyavyājenaiva pradarśayet .. 67 ..
A woman would show the wandering of worldly existence even at the first encounter,
under the mere pretext of circumambulating the fire.
5.157.68
etāstu nirghṛṇatvena nirdaya tvena nityaśaḥ ..
viśeṣājjāḍyakṛtyena dūṣayaṃti kulatrayam .. 68 ..
These women, through ruthless and pitiless behavior at all times,
especially by their foolish acts, bring ruin upon the three lineages.
5.157.69
kulatrayagṛhaṃ kīrtyā nijayā dhavalīkṛtam ..
kṛṣṇaṃ karotyakṛ tyena nārī dīpaśikheva tu .. 69 ..
A woman, like the flame of a lamp, blackens by improper conduct
the mansion of the three lineages that has been made white by its own fame.
5.157.70
dharmavṛkṣasya vātālī cittapadmaśaśiprabhā ..
sṛṣṭā kāmārṇavagrāhī kena mokṣadṛḍhārgalā .. 6.158.70 ..
A whirlwind to the tree of dharma, the moon's radiance to the lotus of the mind,
a female crocodile in the ocean of desire, a stout bolt across [the door to] liberation—by whom was woman created?
5.157.71
kārā saṃtānakūṭasya saṃsāravanavāgurā ..
svargamārgamahāgartā puṃsāṃ strī vedhasā kṛtā .. 71 ..
A prison for the snare of lineage, a net in the forest of saṃsāra,
a great pit on the path to heaven—woman was made for men by the Creator.
5.157.72
vedhasā baṃdhanaṃ kiṃcinnṛṇāmanyadapaśyatā ..
strīrūpeṇa tataḥ ko'pi pāśo'yaṃ sudṛḍhaḥ kṛtaḥ ..72..
Seeing no other bondage for men, the Creator
then made this extremely strong snare in the form of woman."
5.157.73
ityevaṃ bahudhā so'pi vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ ..
strīcintāṃ bahudhā kṛtvā ātmānaṃ cāpyagarhayat .. 73 ..
Thus in various ways he lamented, deeply sorrowful;
reflecting on women at length, he also reproached himself:
5.157.74
aho kubuddhinā naiva labdhaṃ saṃsārajaṃ phalam..
na kadācinmayā dattaṃ tṛṣṇāvyākulacetasā .. 74 ..
"Alas! Being foolish, the fruit born of worldly life was not obtained by me at all;
with a mind agitated by greed, nothing was ever given by me.
5.157.75
aiśvarye'pi sthite bhūri na mayā sukṛtaṃ kṛtam ..
kadācinnaiva japtaṃ ca na hutaṃ ca hutāśane .. 75 ..
Even while great wealth was present, no virtuous deed was done by me;
never was a mantra recited, nor was an oblation offered into the fire.
5.157.76
athavā satyamevoktaṃ kenāpi ca mahātmanā ..
kṛpaṇena samo dātā na bhūto na bhaviṣyati ..
aspṛṣṭvāpi ca vittaṃ svaṃ yaḥ parebhyaḥ prayacchati .. 76 ..
Or rather, it was truly said by some great-souled person:
There has never been nor will there ever be a giver equal to a miser,
who, without even touching his wealth, gives it away to others.
5.157.77
śaraṇaṃ kiṃ prapannānāṃ viṣavanmārayaṃti kim ..
na dīyate na bhujyaṃte kṛpaṇena dhanāni ca .. 77 ..
What refuge is there for those who surrender? Do they kill like poison?
Riches are neither given away nor enjoyed by a miser.
5.157.78
dānaṃ bhogo nāśastisro gatayo bhavaṃti vittasya ..
yo na dadāti na bhuṃkte tasya tṛtīyā gatirbhavati .. 78 ..
Giving, enjoyment, and loss are the three destinies of wealth;
for him who neither gives nor enjoys, the third destiny occurs.
5.157.79
dhaninopyadānavibhavā gaṇyaṃte dhuri daridrāṇām..
nahi haṃti yatpipāsāmataḥ samudro'pi marureva .. 79 ..
Rich men who have riches without giving are counted at the head of the destitute;
since it does not quench thirst, even the ocean is nothing but a desert.
5.157.80
atyupayuktāḥ sadbhirgatāgatairaharahaḥ sunirviṇṇāḥ ..
kṛpaṇajanasaṃnikāśaṃ saṃprāpyārthāḥ svapaṃtīha .. 6.158.80 ..
Utterly worn out by good people who come and go day after day, completely exhausted,
wealth comes to the presence of misers and falls asleep here.
5.157.81
prāptānna labhaṃte te bhogānbhoktuṃ svakarmaṇā kṛpaṇāḥ ..
mukhapākaḥ kila bhavati drākṣāpāke balibhujānām .. 81 ..
Misers do not get to enjoy the pleasures they have obtained, on account of their own deeds;
inflammation of the mouth indeed occurs for crows when the grapes are ripe.
5.157.82
dātavyaṃ bhoktavyaṃ sati vibhave saṃcayo na kartavyaḥ ..
paśyeha madhukarīṇāṃ saṃcitamarthaṃ haraṃtyanye .. 82 ..
One should give, one should enjoy when wealth is present; hoarding should not be done;
look here, others carry off the wealth accumulated by female bees.
5.157.83
yācitaṃ dvijavare na dīyate saṃcitaṃ kratuvare na yojyate ..
tatkadaryaparirakṣitaṃ dhanaṃ caurapārthivagṛheṣu bhujyate .. 83 ..
What is begged is not given to an excellent brahmin; what is gathered is not employed in a great sacrifice;
that wealth preserved by a skinflint is enjoyed in the houses of thieves and kings.
5.157.84
tyāgo guṇo vittavatāṃ vittaṃ tyāgavatāṃ guṇaḥ ..
parasparaviyuktau tu vitta tyāgau viḍambanam .. 84 ..
Giving is an ornament for the wealthy; wealth is an ornament for the generous;
