5.161.1
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
evaṃ nāmni kṛte tasya bhāskarasyāṃśumālinaḥ ..
dvijānāṃ purataḥ puṣpaḥ kathayāmāsa ceṣṭitam .. 1 ..
Sūta said:
When the name of that radiant Sun was thus established,
Puṣpa related his deeds in the presence of the twice-born:
5.161.2
ātmīyaṃ kutsitaṃ teṣāṃ maṇibhadravadho yathā ..
vihito vihitā patnī tasya vyājena kṛtsnaśaḥ .. 2 ..
His own vile deeds, how the slaying of Maṇibhadra was performed,
and how his wife was appropriated entirely by deception.
5.161.3
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ procustacchrutvā kopasaṃyutāḥ ..
sītkārānpracurānkṛtvā dhiktvāṃ pāpa pragamyatām .. 3 ..
Then those brahmins, hearing that, filled with anger,
making frequent hissing sounds [of dismay, said]: “Fie on you, sinner! Go away!
5.161.4
ātmīyaṃ hema cādāya na te śuddhirbhaviṣyati .. 4 ..
Take your gold; there will be no purification for you.
5.161.5
brahmaghnastvaṃ yataḥ proktāstrayo varṇā dvijottamāḥ ..
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ smṛtiśāstraprapāṭhakaiḥ .. 5 .. ..
For you are the killer of a brahmin, since the three varṇas are declared
to be twice-born, O best of brahmins—brahmin, kṣatriya, and vaiśya—by the expounders of the smṛti treatises.”
5.161.6
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
tatastu duḥkhitaḥ puṣpo bāṣpasaṃpūritekṣaṇaḥ ..
brahmasthānādvinirgatya praruroda suduḥkhitaḥ .. 6 ..
Sūta said:
Then, grieving, with eyes flooded with tears,
Puṣpa departed from the assembly of brahmins and wept in deep sorrow.
5.161.7
rorūyamāṇamālokya tataste nāgarā dvijāḥ ..
dayāṃ ca mahatīṃ kṛtvā tataḥ procuḥ parasparam .. 7 ..
Seeing him weeping profusely, those Nāgara brahmins,
taking great pity, then said to one another:
5.161.8
nānāvidhāni śāstrāṇi smṛtayaśca pṛthagvidhāḥ ..
purāṇāni samastāni vīkṣadhvaṃ susamāhitāḥ .. 8 ..
“Examine attentively the various treatises of sacred law, the diverse smṛtis,
and all the Purāṇas.
5.161.10
kutracitkvacidevāsya kathaṃcicchuddhirasti cet ..
na tacca vidyate śāstramasminsthāne na cāsti yat..9.. na smṛtirna purāṇaṃ ca vedāṃtaṃ vā dvijottamāḥ .. na cāsti brāhmaṇaḥ so'tra sarvajñapratimo na yaḥ .. 6.162.10 .. tasmāccintayata kṣipramasya śuddhipradaṃ hi yat ..
See whether somewhere, in some way, purification exists for him.
There is no sacred treatise that does not exist in this place;
no smṛti, no Purāṇa, or Vedānta, O best of the twice-born;
and there is no brahmin here who does not resemble an omniscient one.
Therefore, reflect quickly on that which will grant him purification,
5.161.11
tacca pramāṇatāṃ nītvā śuddhirasya pradīyate .. 11 ..
and having established that as an authoritative means, let purification be granted to him.”
5.161.12
athaiko brāhmaṇaḥ prāha caṃḍaśarmeti viśrutaḥ ..
mayā skāṃdapurāṇe'sminpuraścaraṇasaṃśritā ..12..
Then one brahmin, celebrated as Caṇḍaśarman, said:
“In this Skandapurāṇa, concerning the preparatory rite,
5.161.13
paṭhitā saptamī yā ca puraścaraṇasaṃjñitā ..
puraścaraṇataḥ pāpaṃ vihitaṃ tu yathā vrajet .. 13 ..
the seventh lunar day named Puraścaraṇa has been studied by me,
by which a committed sin goes away through the preparatory rite.
5.161.14
samyaktathāpi vipreṃdrāstato yāti na saṃśayaḥ ..
tasmātkarotu tāmeṣa puraścaraṇasaptamīm .. 14 ..
Even so, completely, O best of the brahmins, it departs from that; there is no doubt.
Therefore, let him observe that Puraścaraṇasaptamī.
5.161.15
aparaṃ bhūbhujādeśānmaṇibhadro nipātitaḥ ..
vadhakaistasya tatpāpaṃ yadi pāpaṃ prajāyate .. 15 ..
Furthermore, Maṇibhadra was struck down by order of the king
by the executioners; that sin belongs to him, if any sin is produced.
5.161.16
rājā bhūtvā na yaḥ samyagvicārayati vādinam ..
tasya tatpātakaṃ ghoraṃ rājñaścaiva prajāyate .. 16 ..
When one becomes a king and does not properly judge a disputant,
that terrible sin belongs to that king alone.
5.161.17
tathāsya patnyāstatpāpaṃ jānaṃtyā yattayoditam ..
matpitrā brāhmaṇairdatto'yaṃ purā vahnisaṃnidhau .. 17 ..
Likewise, the sin of his wife, who knew what was said by her:
‘He was given by my father in the presence of brahmins and fire formerly.’
5.161.18
viḍaṃbitena cānena kṛtapratikṛtaṃ kṛtam ..
tasmānna cāsya doṣaḥ syādyataḥ proktaṃ munīśvaraiḥ .. .. 18 ..
And by this deceived man, retaliation was merely made for what was done.
Therefore, no fault should attach to him, since it has been declared by the best of sages:
5.161.19
kṛte pratikṛtaṃ kuryāddhiṃsane pratihiṃsanam ..
na tatra jāyate doṣo yo duṣṭe duṣṭamācaret.. 19 ..
‘One should do retaliation for an act done, and counter-violence against violence;
no fault is incurred by him who behaves wickedly toward a wicked person.’ ”
5.161.20
.. brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ .. ..
yadyevaṃ vada viprāsya puraścaraṇasaṃjñitām ..
saptamīmadya vipreṃdra varākasya viśuddhaye .. 6.162.20 ..
The brahmins said:
“If it is so, tell him now, O vipra, best of brahmins, of that seventh lunar day
named Puraścaraṇa, for the purification of that wretched man.”
5.161.21
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
athāsya kathayāmāsa saptamīṃ tāṃ dvijottamāḥ ..
caṃḍaśarmābhidhānastu kṛtvā tasyopari kṛpām .. 21 ..
Sūta said:
Then he who was named Caṇḍaśarman related that seventh lunar day to him, O best of the twice-born,
having taken pity upon him.
5.161.22
tenāpi vihitā samyagyathā tasya mukhācchrutā ..
tataḥ saṃvatsarasyāṃte vipāpmā samapadyata .. 22 ..
It was duly observed by him just as heard from his mouth;
then, at the end of a year, he became free from sin.
5.161.23
.. .. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ .. ..
puraścaraṇasaṃjñāṃ tu saptamīṃ vada sūtaja ..
vidhinā kena kartavyā kasminkāla upasthite .. 23 ..
The ṛṣis said:
Speak, O son of Sūta, of that seventh lunar day named Puraścaraṇa:
by what rite should it be performed, and when the time has arrived?
5.161.24
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
ahaṃ vaḥ kīrtayiṣyāmi rohitāśvasya bhūpateḥ ..
mārkaṃḍena purā proktā pṛcchayamānena bhaktitaḥ .. 24 ..
Sūta said: / I shall narrate to you [that which was] spoken of old to King Rohitāśva / by Mārkaṇḍeya, when asked with devotion.
5.161.25
saptakalpasmaro viprā mārkaṃḍākhyo mahāmuniḥ ..
rohitāśvena pṛṣṭaḥ sa hariścaṃdrātmajena ca .. 25 ..
O brahmins, that great sage named Mārkaṇḍa, who remembers seven cosmic ages, / was asked by Rohitāśva, the son of Hariścandra.
5.161.26
.. rohitāśva uvāca .. ..
ajñānājjñānato vāpi yatpāpaṃ kurute naraḥ ..
upāyaṃ tasya nāśāya kiṃcinme vada sanmune .. 26 ..
Rohitāśva said: / Whatever sin a man commits, whether unknowingly or knowingly, / tell me some means for its destruction, O virtuous sage.
5.161.27
.. mārkaṃḍeya uvāca .. ..
mānasaṃ vācikaṃ caiva kāyikaṃ ca tṛtīyakam ..
trividhaṃ pātakaṃ loke narāṇāmiha jāyate .. 27 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Mental, vocal, and thirdly bodily— / threefold is the sin that arises here among men in the world.
5.161.28
tatropāyā vināśāya tasya saṃparikīrtitāḥ ..
tānahaṃ te pravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣva nṛpasattama .. 28 ..
The means for its destruction are fully proclaimed there; / I shall declare them to you; listen, O best of kings.
5.161.29
mānasaṃ caiva yatpāpaṃ narāṇāmiha jāyate ..
paścāttāpe kṛte tasya tatkṣaṇādeva naśyati .. 29 ..
As for mental sin that arises here among men, / when repentance is made for it, it is destroyed that very instant.
5.161.30
vācikaṃ caiva yatpāpaṃ nābhuktvā tatpraṇaśyati ..
puraścaraṇabāhyaṃ tu satyametanmayoditam .. .. 6.162.30 ..
And vocal sin is not destroyed without being experienced, / except by a preparatory rite; this truth has been uttered by me.
5.161.31
nivedya brāhmaṇeṃdrāṇāṃ taduktaṃ ca samācaret ..
prāyaścittaṃ yathoktaṃ tu tataḥ śuddhimavāpnuyāt .. 31 ..
Having reported it to the foremost of brahmins, one should perform what they direct; / through the expiation as prescribed, one then attains purification.
5.161.32
athavā pārthivo jñātvā kurute tasya nigra ham ..
tena śuddhimavāproti yadyapi syātsa kilviṣī .. 32 ..
Or, if the earthly king learns of it and inflicts punishment upon him, / through that he attains purification, even though he may be a sinner.
5.161.33
lajjayā brāhmaṇeṃdrāṇāṃ yo na brūte kathaṃcana ..
na ca rājā vijānāti śarīrasthena yo mriyet ..
tasya nigrahakartā ca svayaṃ vaivasvato yamaḥ .. 33 ..
He who out of shame never speaks of it to the foremost of brahmins, / nor does the king find out, and he dies with it remaining in his body— / Yama, son of Vivasvat, is himself the inflictor of punishment upon him.
5.161.34
tasmātsarvaprayatnena kṛtvā pāpaṃ vijānatā ..
prāyaścittaṃ tu kartavyaṃ yathoktaṃ brāhmaṇo ditam .. 34 ..
Therefore, by every effort, when sin has been committed by one who is aware, / an expiation must be performed as prescribed, declared by the brahmins.
5.161.35
.. rohitāśva uvāca .. ..
sarveṣāmeva pāpānāṃ vihitānāṃ munīśvara ..
kiṃcidvrataṃ samācakṣva dānaṃ vā homameva vā ..
vipāpmā jāyate yena puraścaraṇavarjitam .. 35 ..
Rohitāśva said: / For all sins that have been committed, O lord of sages, / declare some observance, or gift, or indeed a burnt offering, / by which, without a preparatory rite, one becomes freed from sin.
5.161.36
nityaṃ pāpāni kurute naraḥ sūkṣmāṇi sarvataḥ ..
prāyaścittāni sarveṣāṃ kartuṃ śaktiḥ kathaṃ bhavet .. 36 .. ..
A man constantly commits subtle sins on every side; / how could there be the power to perform expiations for them all?
5.161.37
.. mārkaṃḍeya uvāca .. ..
asti rājanvrataṃ puṇyaṃ puraścaraṇasaṃjñitam ..
puraścaraṇasaṃjñā tu saptamī sūryavallabhā .. 37 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / There is, O king, a holy observance called Puraścaraṇa; / the seventh [lunar day], beloved of the Sun, is designated as Puraścaraṇa,
5.161.38
yayā saṃcīrṇayā rāja nkāyastho yamasaṃbhavaḥ ..
vicitro mārjayetpāpaṃ kṛtaṃ janmani saṃcitam .. 38..
by performing which, O king, Citragupta, the scribe born of Yama, / wipes away the sin committed and accumulated throughout life.
5.161.39
tasmātkuru mahārāja tathāśu vacanaṃ mama ..
yena vā mucyate pāpā tsarvasmātkāyasaṃbhavāt .. 39 ..
Therefore, O great king, quickly act according to my word, / whereby one is freed from all sin arising from the body.
5.161.40
.. rohitāśva uvāca .. ..
puraścaraṇasaṃjñā tu saptamī munisattama ..
vidhinā kena kartavyā kasminkāle vada sva me .. 6.162.40 ..
Rohitāśva said: / By what procedure is the seventh lunar day called Puraścaraṇa to be observed, / and at what time, O best of sages? Tell me.
5.161.41
.. mārkaṃḍeya uvāca .. ..
māghamāse site pakṣe makarasthe divākare ..
sūryavāreṇa saptamyāṃ vratametatsamācaret .. 41 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / In the month of Māgha, during the bright fortnight, when the Sun is in Capricorn, / on a Sunday on the seventh lunar day, one should undertake this observance.
5.161.42
pākhaṃḍaiḥ patitaiḥ sārdhaṃ tasminnahani nālapet ..
bhakṣayitvā nṛpaśreṣṭha prabhāte dantadhāvanam ..
maṃtreṇānena paścācca kartavyo niyamo nṛpa .. 42 ..
On that day one should not converse with heretics or fallen persons. / Having cleaned one's teeth at dawn, O best of kings, / a vow is then to be made with this mantra, O king:
5.161.43
puraścaraṇakṛtyāyāṃ saptamyāṃ divasādhipa ..
upavāsaṃ kariṣyāmi adya tvaṃ śaraṇaṃ mama ..43..
“On the seventh [lunar day] dedicated to the preparatory rite, O lord of the day, / I shall fast; today you are my refuge.”
5.161.44
tato'parāhṇasamaye snātvā dhautāṃbaraḥ śuciḥ ..
pratimāṃ pūjayedbhaktyā dinādhipasamudbhavām ..44..
Then in the afternoon, having bathed and wearing washed clothes, being pure, / one should worship with devotion an image of the lord of day.

pataṃgāya namaḥ pādau mārtaṃḍāyeti jānunī .. 45 ..
