suguptasthānamāsādya karotyamaratuṣṭaye..4..
Now, whoever performed pious duty, or burnt offering, or recitation, / did so finding a well-hidden place, for the pleasure of the immortals.

atha svargasthitā daityā yajñabhāgavivarjitāḥ..
tathā martyodbhavairbhāgaiḥ saṃdehaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ..5..
Then the Daityas stationed in heaven, deprived of sacrificial shares / and likewise of the portions arising from mortals, fell into great doubt.
5.230.6
tataḥ kopaparītātmā preṣayāmāsa dānavaḥ..
martyaloke carānguptānnipuṇāṃścābravīttataḥ..6..
Then, his mind filled with rage, the Dānava dispatched / hidden and clever spies to the mortal world, and said to them:

sa ca vadhyaśca yuṣmābhirmama vākyādasaṃśayam..7..

At that very time, Sāṅkṛti, the best of sages, / stayed in secret with his body concealed in that pit / where previously austerity had been performed by Vṛka, O twice-born.
5.230.11
atha te taṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā tadguhāyāṃ vyavasthitam..
bhartsamānāstapastacca procuśca paruṣākṣaraiḥ..11..
Then, seeing him stationed in that cave, / reviling that austerity, they spoke in harsh words,
5.230.12
dṛṣṭvā tasyāgrataḥ saṃsthāṃ gandhapuṣpaiśca pūjitām..
vāsudevātmikāṃ mūrtiṃ caturhastāṃ dvijottamāḥ..12..
having seen standing before him, worshipped with perfumes and flowers, / the four-armed image embodying Vāsudeva, O best of the twice-born.
5.230.13
tataste śastramudyamya nirjaghnustaṃ krudhānvitāḥ..
na śekuste yadā haṃtuṃ saṃvṛtaṃ viṣṇutejasā..
kuṇṭhatāṃ sarvaśastrāṇi gatāni vimalānyapi..13..
Then, lifting their weapons, they struck him in anger. / When they could not kill him who was shielded by Viṣṇu's splendor, / all their weapons, though spotless, became blunted.
5.230.14
atha vailakṣyamāpannā nirviṇṇāḥ sarva eva te..
tāṃ vārtāṃ dānavendrāya vṛkāyocuśca te tadā..14..
Then, overwhelmed with embarrassment and dejected, all of them / related that news to Vṛka, the lord of Dānavas:
5.230.15
kaścidvipraḥ samādhāya vaiṣṇavīṃ pratimāṃ puraḥ..
tapastepe mahābhāga kṣetre vai hāṭakeśvare..15..
'A certain brahmin, having set an image of Viṣṇu before him, / performed austerity, O noble one, in the sacred field of Hāṭakeśvara,
5.230.16
yatra tvayā tapastaptaṃ bhītyā sarvadivaukasām..
api cauryeṇa cāsmākaṃ tapastapati tādṛśam.. 16..
where austerity was performed by you out of fear of all the gods. / He too performs such austerity in secret from us,
5.230.17
yena sarvāṇi śastrāṇi kuṇṭhatāṃ pragatāni ca..
tasya gātre prahāraiśca tasmātkuru yathocitam.. 17..
by which all weapons have become blunted / through blows upon his body. Therefore, do as is fitting!'
5.230.18
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā vṛkaḥ kopasamanvitaḥ..
jagāma satvaṃ tatra yatrāsau sāṃkṛtiḥ sthitaḥ..18..
Hearing that word of theirs, Vṛka, filled with wrath, / quickly went there where that Sāṅkṛti was staying.

sa gatvā vaiṣṇavīṃ mūrtiṃ tāmutkṣipya sudūrataḥ..
śvabhrādbahiḥ pracikṣepa bhartsamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ..19..
Going there, he lifted that image of Viṣṇu and hurled it far away, / casting it out of the chasm, reviling him again and again.
5.230.20
jaghāna pādaghātena dakṣiṇenetareṇa tam..
abravīnmama vadhyastvaṃ yanmacchatruṃ janārdanam..6.231.20..
He struck him with kicks of his right foot and the other, / and said: 'You are to be killed by me, since Janārdana, my enemy,
5.230.21
saṃpūjayasi cauryeṇa tena prāṇānharāmyaham..
evamuktvātha khaḍgena taṃ jaghāna sa daityapaḥ..21..
you worship in secret; therefore I will take your life!' / Having spoken thus, the Daitya ruler struck him with a sword.
5.230.22
tatastasya sa khaḍgastu tīkṣṇo'pi dvijasattamāḥ..
tasya kāye prahīṇastu śatadhā samapadyata..22..

5.230.23
tataḥ kopaparītātmā taṃ śaśāpa sa sāṃkṛtiḥ..23..
Then Sāṃkṛti, his mind seized by rage, cursed him:
5.230.24
yasmātpāpa tvayāhaṃ ca pādaghātaiḥ pratāḍitaḥ ..
tasmātte patatāṃ pādau sadya eva dharātale .. 24 ..
"Since I have been struck by you with kicks, O sinner, / therefore let both your feet fall immediately to the earth's surface!"
5.230.25
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
uktamātre tatastena pādau tasya dvijottamāḥ ..
patitau medinīpṛṣṭhe paṃcaśīrṣāvivoragau .. 25 ..
Sūta said: / No sooner was that spoken by him, O best of brahmins, / than his two feet fell upon the surface of the earth like five-headed serpents.
5.230.26
etasminneva kāle tu ākrandaḥ sumahānabhūt ..
vṛkasya sainikānāṃ ca nārīṇāṃ ca viśeṣataḥ .. .. 26 ..
At that very moment, a very great wailing arose, / particularly from Vṛka's soldiers and women.

5.230.28
hataśeṣāśca daityāste pātālāṃtaḥsamā gatāḥ ..
vṛko'pi paṃgutāṃ prāptastasthau tapasi susthiram .. 28 ..
And the remaining daityas fled into the depths of Pātāla; / Vṛka also, having become lame, remained firmly settled in austerity.
5.230.29
sarvairaṃtaḥpuraiḥ sārdhaṃ duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ..
indro'pi prāptavānrājyaṃ tadā nihata kaṃṭakam .. 29 ..
Together with all his inner quarters, filled with grief and sorrow, / Indra too regained his kingdom, its obstacles now removed.
5.230.30
dharmakriyāḥ pravṛttāśca tato bhūyo rasātale .. 6.231.30 ..
And righteous acts commenced once again in Rasātala.
5.230.31
atha dīrgheṇa kālena tasya tuṣṭaḥ pitāmahaḥ ..
uvāca tatra cāgatya garttāmadhye dvijottamāḥ .. 31 ..
Then after a long time, the Grandfather [Brahmā] was pleased with him, / and coming there into the pit, O best of brahmins, he said:
5.230.32
vṛka tuṣṭo'smi te vatsa varaṃ varaya suvrata ..
ahaṃ dāsyāmi te nūnaṃ yadyapi syātsudurlabham .. 32 ..
"Vṛka, I am pleased with you, dear child. Choose a boon, O one of good vows! / I shall surely give it to you, even if it be extremely difficult to attain."
5.230.33
.. vṛka uvāca .. ..
yadi tuṣṭo'si me deva yadi deyo varo mama ..
pādadānaṃ tadā deva mama brahmansamācara ..
paṃgutā yāti śīghraṃ me yeneyaṃ te prasādataḥ .. 33 ..
Vṛka said: / "If you are pleased with me, O god, if a boon is to be given to me, / then, O god, O Brahmā, grant me feet, / so that through your grace this lameness of mine departs quickly."
5.230.34
tacchrutvā taṃ samānīya sāṃkṛtiṃ tatra padmajaḥ ..
provāca sāṃtvapūrvaṃ ca vṛkasyāsya dvijottama .. 34 ..
Hearing that, the Lotus-born [Brahmā] brought Sāṃkṛti there, / and spoke gently to him for the sake of this Vṛka, O best of brahmins:
5.230.35
madvākyātpaṃgutā yāti yenāsya tvaṃ tathā kuru .. 35 .. ..
"Act so that by my word his lameness may depart."
5.230.36
.. sāṃkṛtiruvāca .. ..
anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ me svaireṣvapi pitāmaha ..

Sāṃkṛti said: / "Untruth has never been spoken by me, even in jest, O Grandfather; / it is known, O Lord of the gods of gods! How then may I do that?"

Brahmā said: / "This Vṛka, the best of daityas, is always dedicated to my devotion; / and you, my grandson, are ever beloved. Therefore do I entreat you.
5.230.38
tava vākyaṃ ca no mithyā kartuṃ śaknomi sanmune .. 38 ..
Nor can I make your word false, O good sage."

.. sāṃkṛtiruvāca .. ..
eṣa daityaḥ suduṣṭātmā devānāmahite sthitaḥ ..

Sāṃkṛti said: / "This daitya is very wicked, bent on harming the gods, / especially the noble Vāsudeva, my elder.
5.230.40
paṃgutāmarhati prāyaḥ pāpātmā dvijadūṣakaḥ ..
balena mahatā yukto jarāmaraṇavarjitaḥ .. 6.231.40 ..
This sinner, abuser of brahmins, fully deserves lameness; / endowed with great strength, he was freed from old age and death
5.230.41
purā kṛtastvayā deva sa cetpādāvavāpsyati ..
haniṣyati jagatsarvaṃ sadevāsuramānuṣam .. 41 ..
by you formerly, O god. If he obtains two feet, / he will destroy the entire world, including gods, asuras, and mortals.
5.230.42
tasmāttiṣṭhatu tadrūpo na kalpaṃ kartumarhasi ..
tvayāpi cintā kartavyā trailokyasya yataḥ prabho .. .. 42 ..
Therefore let him remain as he is; you ought not to alter it. / For concern for the three worlds must be taken by you as well, O Lord."
5.230.43
.. brahmovāca .. ..
prāvṛṭkāle tu sañjāte yānaṃ kartuṃ na yujyate ..
vijigīṣorviśeṣeṇa muktvā śītātapāgamam .. 43 ..
Brahmā said: / "When the rainy season has arrived, it is not fit to undertake a march, / especially for one who wishes to conquer, leaving aside the arrival of cold and heat.
5.230.44
tasmācca caturo māsānvārṣikānpādasaṃyutaḥ ..
agamyaḥ sarvalokānāṃ kuryātkarmāṇi dhairyataḥ .. 44 ..
Therefore, for the four rainy months, endowed with feet, / inaccessible to all the worlds, let him perform actions steadfastly.
5.230.45
tadbhūyātpādasaṃyuktaḥ sa vṛko dāna vottamaḥ ..
yena kṣemaṃ ca devānāṃ dvijānāṃ jāyate dvija .. 45 ..
Thus let that Vṛka, the foremost of dānavas, be endowed with feet, / in such a way that safety is secured for the gods and brahmins, O brahmin.
5.230.46
evaṃ kṛte na mithyā te vākyaṃ vipra bhaviṣyati ..
phalaṃ ca tapasastasya na vṛthā saṃbhaviṣyati .. 46 ..
When it is done thus, your word will not become false, O brahmin, / and the fruit of his austerity will not be in vain."

punaśca dānavo raudraḥ paśutvaṃ samapadyata..
tasyāmeva tu gartāyāṃ saṃtiṣṭhati dvijottamāḥ..48..
And again the dreadful dānava attained a beast-like state [for eight months]; / he stayed in that very pit, O best of brahmins,

While that exceedingly cruel daitya had fallen into lameness, / after some time the king of the gods, scorched by sorrow at the end of Āṣāḍha, said to Bṛhaspati:
5.230.56
guro sa māsaḥ saṃprāptaḥ prāvṛṭkālo bhayāvahaḥ ..
āgamiṣyati yatrāsau labdhapādo vṛkāsuraḥ ..56..

tathā yajñāśca ye sarve ktvayādānādi kāḥ śubhāḥ ..
te sarve na kriyaṃte ca cūḍākaraṇapūrvakāḥ .. 86 ..
Likewise, all auspicious sacrifices, beginning with the tonsure ceremony / and the giving of daughters in marriage, are not performed;
5.230.785_13
muktvānnaprāśanaṃnāma sīmaṃtonnayanaṃ tathā ..
tasmātsupte jagannāthe tāḥ sarvāḥ syurvṛthā dvijāḥ .. 87 ..
excepting the first feeding of solid food and the parting of the hair; / therefore, while the Lord of the world is asleep, all those would be in vain, O twice-born ones.
5.230.785_14
vrataṃ vā niyamaṃ vātha tasminyaḥ kurute naraḥ ..
prasupte devadeveśe tatsarvaṃ niṣphalaṃ bhavet ..88..
Whatever observance or restriction a man undertakes at that time, / while the God of gods is asleep, all that becomes fruitless.
5.230.785_15
tasmātsarvaprayatnena saṃprasupte janārdane ..
vratasthairmānavairbhāvyaṃ tasya devasya tuṣṭaye .. 89 ..
Therefore, with every effort, while Janārdana is asleep, / men must abide by observances for the satisfaction of that god.
5.230.785_16
ekādaśyāṃ dine prāpte śayane bodhane hareḥ ..
yatkiṃcitkriyate karma śreṣṭhaṃ taccākṣayaṃ bhavet .. 6.231.90 ..
When the eleventh day arrives for Hari’s sleeping and for his awakening, / whatever noble act is performed becomes inexhaustible.
5.230.785_17
kiṃvātra bahunoktena kriyate yadvrataṃ naraiḥ ..
tena tuṣṭiṃ parāṃ yāti daityopari sthito hariḥ ..91..
What need is there of saying much here? By whatever observance is performed by men, / Hari, situated on top of the Daitya, attains supreme satisfaction.
5.230.785_18
evaṃ sa bhagavānprāha suptastatra janārdanaḥ ..
kiṃ vā tasya jvaro jāto mahatī vedanāpi ca .. 92 ..
Thus the blessed Janārdana declared while sleeping there: / 'Does he have a fever or even great torment,

tasminnahani pāpātmā yonnamaśnāti mānavaḥ ..
tasmātsarvaprayatnena saṃprāpte harivāsare .. 93 ..
the sinful person who eats food on that day?' / Therefore, with every effort, when Hari's day arrives,
5.230.785_20
anyasminnapi bhoktavyaṃ na nareṇa vijānatā ..
kiṃ punaḥ śayanaṃ yatra kurute yatra bodhanam .. 94 ..
a wise person should not eat food on that or another [Ekādaśī]; / how much more so on the day when he sleeps and when he awakens!
5.230.785_21
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṃ yatpṛṣṭo'smi dvijo ttamāḥ ..
hāṭakeśvaraje kṣetre yasmācchete janārdanaḥ .. 95 ..
Sūta said: / All this has been narrated to you, O best of the twice-born, as I was asked, / about why Janārdana sleeps in the sacred field of Hāṭakeśvara,
5.230.785_22
kṣīrābdhiṃ saṃparityajya sadā māsacatuṣṭayam ..
śrūyatāṃ ca phalaṃ yatsyāttasminnārādhite vibho .. 96 ..
having left the Ocean of Milk for four months always; / and hear the fruit that accrues when that Lord is propitiated:
5.230.785_23
caturo vārṣikānmāsānyastaṃ pūjayate vibhum ..
vratasthaḥ sa naro yāti yatra devaḥ sa saṃsthitaḥ .. 97 ..
That person who, observing vows, worships the Lord for the four rainy months, / goes to where that god abides.
5.230.785_24
kiṃ dānairbahubhirdattaiḥ kiṃ vrataiḥ kimupoṣitaiḥ ..
tatra yaḥ puṃḍarīkākṣaṃ suptaṃ pūjayati dhruvam .. 98 ..
What is the use of many gifts bestowed, what of vows, what of fasts? / A person who unfailingly worships the lotus-eyed one sleeping there [attains all].

Thus ends the two hundred and thirty-first chapter, entitled 'Description of the Glory of the Ekādaśī Vow in the Narrative of the One Lying on the Waters', in the Glory of Hāṭakeśvara Field, in the Nāgarakhaṇḍa, the sixth [part] in the Mahāpurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses, the glorious Skandapurāṇa.
