5.265.13
ānartādhipatiḥ pūrvamaśvasena iti smṛtaḥ..
āsīddharmaparo nityaṃ vedavedāgaṃpāragaḥ..13..
Formerly, there was a ruler of Ānarta named Aśvasena. / He was ever devoted to dharma and had mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.

5.265.17
tasmādvarṣavrataṃ tyaktvā kiṃcidekāhnikaṃ vada..17..

5.265.31
liṃgeṣu ca samasteṣu caleṣu sthāvareṣu ca..
saṃkramiṣyāmyasaṃdigdhaṃ varṣapāpaviśuddhaye..31..

5.265.32
tasyāṃ rātrau hi me pūjāṃ yaḥ kariṣyati mānavaḥ..
maṃtrairetaiḥ suraśreṣṭha vipāpmā sa bhaviṣyati..32..
For whatever person performs my worship on that night / with these mantras, O best of the gods, shall be freed from sin:
5.265.33
oṃ sadyojātāya namaḥ..
oṃ vāmadevāya namaḥ..
oṃ ghorāya namaḥ..
oṃ tatpuruṣāya namaḥ..
oṃ īśānāya namaḥ..
evaṃ vaktrāṇi saṃpūjya gandhapuṣpānulepanaiḥ..
vastrairdīpaiśca naivedyaistato'rghaṃ saṃpradāpayet..

"Om, reverence to Sadyojāta; / Om, reverence to Vāmadeva; / Om, reverence to Ghora; / Om, reverence to Tatpuruṣa; / Om, reverence to Īśāna." / Having thus worshipped the faces with perfumes, flowers, unguents, / garments, lamps, and food-offerings, he should then present the water offering, / worshipping with this mantra and meditating on me seated in his mind:
5.265.34
gaurīvallabha deveśa sarvādya śaśiśekhara..
varṣapāpaviśuddhyarthamargho me pratigṛhyatām..34.
"O beloved of Gaurī, lord of the gods, first of all, adorned with the moon! / May my water offering be accepted for the purification of the sins of the year."
5.265.35
tataḥ saṃpūjayedvipraṃ bhojanācchādanādibhiḥ..

Then he should worship a brahmin with food, clothing, and other gifts; / and having given him a priestly fee, he must avoid stinginess with his wealth,
5.265.36
dharmākhyānakathābhiśca salāsyaistāṃḍavaistathā..36..
and [pass the night] with stories and discourses on dharma, and with lāsya and tāṇḍava dances.
5.265.37
evaṃ kariṣyate yo'tra vratametatsureśvara..
varṣapāpaviśuddhyarthaṃ prāyaścittaṃ bhaviṣyati..37..
Whoever performs this observance in this manner, O lord of the gods, / will obtain an expiation for the purification of the sins of the year.'
5.265.38
tacchrutvā tridaśāḥ sarve praṇamya śaśiśekharam..
saṃprahṛṣṭā naraśreṣṭha svāni sthānāni bhejire..38..

5.265.43
tatrāsīllubdhakaḥ kaścijjātimātrānna karmataḥ..
vyasenānābhibhūtātmā paravittāpahārakaḥ..43.
There was a hunter there, hunter by birth alone and not by conduct, / his mind overcome by vice, a stealer of others' wealth.
5.265.44
na kadācidvrataṃ tena na dattaṃ na japaḥ kṛtaḥ..
kevalaṃ ca hṛtaṃ vittaṃ lokānāṃ chalasaṃśrayāt..44..

5.265.46

nārībhirnaraśārdūla bhūṣitābhiḥ subhūṣaṇaiḥ..
athāsau ciṃtayāmāsa coro dṛṣṭvātha jāgaram..47..
and by women adorned with fine ornaments, O tiger among men. / Then that thief, seeing the vigil, thought to himself:
5.265.48
gacchāmi yadi kāṃcitstrīṃ bhūṣaṇaiḥ paribhūṣitām..
niṣkrāṃtāṃ bāhyataścāsya prāsādasyāpnuyāmaham..48..
'If I can catch some woman adorned with ornaments / coming out to the exterior of this temple,

tato hatvā samādāya bhūṣaṇāni vrajāmyaham..49.
then I will kill her, take her ornaments, and depart.'
5.265.50
evaṃ niścitya manasā gatastasya samīpataḥ.
karṇikāraṃ samāruhya sthito guptastato hi saḥ..6.266.50..

asatīnāṃ ca caurāṇāṃ kāmināmasukhāvahaḥ.. 53..
At that very time, the sharp-rayed sun arose, / bringing displeasure to unchaste women, thieves, and passionate lovers.
5.265.54
tato narāśca nāryaśca jagmuḥ svaṃsvaṃ niketanam..
upacāraparāḥ śāṃtāḥ praṇipatya maheśvaram..54..
Then men and women departed to their respective homes, / tranquil after performing their service, having bowed down to the Great Lord.
5.265.55
so'pi cauro nirāśaśca kṣutkṣāmaḥ śītavihvalaḥ..

5.265.59
varṣevarṣe samāśritya śivarātrau prajāgarāt..
upavāsaparobhūtvā gītavāditraniḥsvanaiḥ..59..
