atha someśvarākhyaṃ ca tatra liṃgaṃ suśobhanam ..
asti khyātaṃ triloke'tra svayaṃ somena nirmitam .. 1 ..
Sūta said:
Now, there is a very splendid liṅga named Someśvara
renowned in the three worlds, fashioned by Soma himself.
5.63.2
somavāreṇa yastatra vatsaraṃ yāvadarcayet ..

He who worships it there on Mondays for a year,
devoting [even] a moment to it, is freed even from terrible disease,
5.63.3
yakṣmaṇāpi na saṃdehaḥ kiṃ punaḥ kuṣṭhapūrvakaiḥ ..
tasmātsarvaprayatnena rogārttastaṃ prapūjayet ..3..
even from consumption, without a doubt, not to mention leprosy and the like.
Therefore, one afflicted with illness should worship it with every effort.
5.63.4
tadārādhya purā somaḥ kṣayavyādhisamanvitaḥ ..
babhūva nīrugdeho'sau yathā pāṃḍyo narādhipaḥ .. 4 ..
Having worshipped it in ancient times, Soma, afflicted with the disease of consumption,
became free of disease in his body, as did the king of the Pāṇḍyas.
5.63.5
.. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ .. ..
oṣadhīnāmadhīśasya kathaṃ somasya sūtaja ..
kṣayavyādhiḥ purā jātā upaśāṃtiṃ kathaṃ gataḥ ..5..
The seers said:
How did Soma, the lord of medicinal plants, O son of Sūta,
contract the disease of consumption in former times, and how did he find relief?
5.63.6
etannaḥ sarvamācakṣva vistareṇa mahāmate..
tathā tasya mahīpasya pāṃḍyasyāpi kathāṃ śubhām .. 6 ..
Tell us all this in detail, O highly wise one,
and also the auspicious story of that king of the Pāṇḍyas.
5.63.7
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
dakṣasya kanyakāḥ pūrvaṃ saptaviṃśatisaṃkhyayā ..
upayeme niśānātho devāgnigurusaṃnidhau .. 7 ..
Sūta said:
In former times, the lord of the night married the daughters of Dakṣa,
twenty-seven in number, in the presence of the gods, fire, and the guru.
5.63.8
nakṣatrasaṃjñitā loke kīrtyaṃte yā dvijottamaiḥ ..
daivajñairaśvinīpūrvā rūpaudāryaguṇānvitāḥ ..8..
They are celebrated as the Nakṣatras in the world by the best of brahmins
and astrologers, beginning with Aśvinī, endowed with beauty, generosity, and virtues.
5.63.9
atha tāsāṃ samastānāṃ madhye tasya niśāpateḥ ..
rohiṇī vallabhā jajñe prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasī .. 9 ..
Then, among all of them, Rohiṇī became beloved
to that lord of the night, dearer to him than his very life.
5.63.10
tataḥ samaṃ parityajya sarvāstā dakṣakanyakāḥ ..
rohiṇyā saha saṃyuktaḥ saṃbabhūva divāniśam .. 6.63.10 ..
Abandoning all those daughters of Dakṣa equally,
he united with Rohiṇī day and night.
5.63.11
tatastāḥ kāma saṃtaptā daurbhāgyena samanvitāḥ ..
procurduḥkhānvitā dakṣaṃ gatvā bāṣpaplutānanāḥ .. 11 ..
Tormented by desire and afflicted with misfortune,
they then went in sorrow, their faces bathed in tears, and said to Dakṣa:
5.63.12
vayaṃ yasmai tvayā dattāḥ patnyarthaṃ tāta pāpine..
ṛtumātramapi prītyā so'smākaṃ na prayacchati .. 12 ..
"To that sinner to whom we were given as wives by you, O father,
he does not out of affection grant us even the time suitable for conception.
5.63.13
tasmātprāṇānvihāsyāmaḥ saṃpraviśya hutāśanam ..
avilaṃbānmahābhāga satyaṃ brūmastavāgrataḥ ..3 .. 13 ..
Therefore, entering the fire, we shall abandon our lives
without delay, O blessed one; we speak the truth before you."
5.63.14
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā dakṣo duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ..
sarvāstāḥ svayamādāya jagāma śaśisaṃnidhau .. 14 ..
Sūta said:
Hearing their words, Dakṣa was filled with grief.
Taking all of them himself, he went to the presence of the moon.
5.63.15
tataḥ provāca so'nvakṣaṃ tāsāṃ dakṣaḥ prajāpatiḥ ..
bhartsayanparuṣairvākyairniśānāthaṃ muhurmuhuḥ .. 15 ..
Then Dakṣa, the progenitor of creatures, immediately spoke,
rebuking the lord of the night repeatedly with harsh words:
5.63.16
kimidaṃ yujyate kartuṃ tvayā rātripate'dhama ..
karma mūḍha satāṃ bāhya dharmaśāstravigarhitam.. 16 ..
"Is it proper for you to do this, O vile lord of the night?
O fool, [this is] an act foreign to the virtuous and condemned by the Dharmaśāstras!
5.63.17
ṛtukāle'pi saṃprāpte sutā mama samudbhavāḥ ..
yanna saṃbhāṣasi prītyā dharmaśāstraṃ na vetsi kim .. 17 ..
Since, even when the time suitable for conception has arrived, you do not converse affectionately
with my daughters, do you not know the Dharmaśāstra?
5.63.18
ṛtu snātāṃ tu yo bhāryāṃ saṃnidhau nopagacchati ..
ghorāyāṃ bhrūṇahatyāyāṃ yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ .. 18 ..
He who does not approach his wife who has bathed after her season,
becomes bound to terrible embryo-murder; of this there is no doubt."
5.63.19
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā salajjo rātrināyakaḥ ....
provācādhomukho dakṣaṃ prakariṣye vacastava .. 19 ..
Hearing his words, the lord of the night, ashamed
and looking downwards, said to Dakṣa: "I shall carry out your word."
5.63.20
tato hṛṣṭamanā dakṣaḥ sutāḥ sarvā himadyute ..
nivedyāmaṃtrya taṃ paścājjagāma nijamaṃdiram .. 6.63.20 ..3
Then, delighted in mind, having entrusted all his daughters
to the cold-rayed one and taken leave of him, Dakṣa went to his own abode.
5.63.21
candro'pi pūrvavatsarvāstāḥ parityajya dakṣajāḥ ..
rohiṇyā saha saṃsargaṃ pracakārānurāgataḥ .. 21 ..
The moon also, abandoning all those daughters of Dakṣa just as before,
consorted passionately with Rohiṇī.
5.63.22
atha tā duḥkhitā bhūyo jagmuryatra pitā sthitaḥ ..
procuśca bāṣpapūrṇākṣāstatkālasadṛśaṃ vacaḥ .. 22 ..
Then, aggrieved once again, they went to where their father was
and, their eyes filled with tears, spoke words suited to that moment:
5.63.23
etattāta mahadduḥkhamasmākaṃ vartate hṛdi ..
yaddaurbhāgyaṃ prasaṃjātaṃ sarvastrījanagarhitam .. .. 23 ..
"This is the great sorrow in our hearts, O father:
the misfortune that has befallen us, condemned by all womankind.
5.63.24
yatpunastvaṃ kṛtastena kāmukena durātmanā ..
vyarthaśramo'pramāṇīva kṛte'smākaṃ gataḥ svayam .. 24 ..
And moreover, that you were made to exert yourself in vain by that wicked, lustful one,
as if you carried no authority, though you went yourself on our behalf—
5.63.25
tadduḥkhaṃ na vayaṃ śaktā hṛdi dhartuṃ kathaṃcana ..
ramate sa hi rohiṇyā caṃdramāḥ sahito'niśam .. 25 ..
we are not able to bear that sorrow in our hearts in any way.
For the moon takes his pleasure with Rohiṇī day and night,
5.63.26
viśeṣāttava vākyena niṣiddho rātrināyakaḥ ..
anujñāṃ dehi tasmāttvamasmākaṃ tatra sāṃpratam ..
daurbhāgyaduḥkhasaṃtaptāstyajāmo yena jīvitam .. 26 ..
even though the lord of the night was explicitly forbidden by your word.
Therefore, grant us permission now,
so that, burned by the sorrow of misfortune, we may cast off our lives."
5.63.27
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā dakṣaḥ kopasamanvitaḥ ..
śaśāpa śarvarīnāthaṃ gatvā tatsaṃnidhau tataḥ .. 27 ..
Sūta said: / Hearing those words of theirs, Dakṣa was filled with wrath; / he went into his presence and cursed the lord of the night: 27
5.63.28
yasmātpāpa na me vākyaṃ tvayā dharmasamanvitam ..
kṛtaṃ tasmātkṣayavyādhistvāṃ grasiṣyati dāruṇaḥ .. 28 ..
"Since you, sinner, did not obey my word endowed with righteousness, / therefore a dreadful consumptive disease shall devour you." 28
5.63.29
evamuktvā yayau dakṣaścandro'pi dvijasattamāḥ ..
tatkṣaṇādyakṣmaṇāśliṣṭaḥ kṣayaṃ yāti dine dine .. 29 ..
Having spoken thus, Dakṣa departed; and the moon too, O best of brahmins, / seized that very moment by consumption, waned day by day. 29
5.63.30
tato'sau kṛśatāṃ prāptaḥ saṃparityajya rohiṇīm ..
aśaktaḥ sevituṃ kāmaṃ vabhrāma jagatītale .. 6.63.30 ..
Then, having become emaciated, abandoning Rohiṇī / and unable to indulge in pleasure, he wandered over the earth, 30
5.63.31
kṣayavyādhipraṇāśāya pṛccha mānaścikitsakān..
auṣadhāni vicitrāṇi prakurvāṇo jitendriyaḥ .. 31 ..
inquiring of physicians for the cure of the consumptive disease, / trying various medicines, with his senses controlled. 31
5.63.32
tathāpi mucyate naiva yakṣmaṇā sa niśāpatiḥ ..
dakṣaśāpena raudreṇa kṣayaṃ yāti dinedine .. 32 ..
Even so, the lord of the night was not at all released from consumption; / due to Dakṣa's terrible curse, he waned day by day. 32
5.63.33
tato vairāgyamāpannastīrthayātrāparāyaṇaḥ ..
babhūva śraddhayāyuktastyaktvā bheṣajamuttamam .. 33 ..
Then, filled with dispassion and devoted to pilgrimage to sacred fords, / he abandoned the best of remedies and became imbued with faith. 33
5.63.34
athāsau bhramamāṇastu tīrthānyāyatanāni ca ..

Now, wandering among sacred fords and temples, / O best of brahmins, he reached the excellent sacred field of Prabhāsa. 34
5.63.35
tatra snātvā śucirbhūtvā prabhāsaṃ vīkṣya rātripaḥ ..
yāvatsaṃprasthitonyatra tāvadagre vyavasthitam .. 35 ..
Having bathed there and become pure, having gazed upon Prabhāsa, as the lord of the night / was about to set out elsewhere, standing right before him 35
5.63.36
apaśyadromakaṃnāma sa muni saṃśitavratam ..
tapovīryasamopetaṃ sarvasattvānukampakam .. 36 ..
he saw a sage named Romaka, of strict vows, / endowed with the power of austerity, compassionate to all living beings. 36
5.63.37
taṃ dṛṣṭvā sa praṇamyoccai stataḥ provāca sādaram ..
kṣayavyādhiyutaścandro nirvedāddvijasattamāḥ .. 37 ..
Having seen him and bowed down deeply, afflicted with the consumptive disease, / the moon, out of despondency, respectfully said, O best of brahmins: 37
5.63.38
parikṣīṇo'smi vipreṃdra kṣayavyādhiprabhāvataḥ ..
tasmātkuru pratīkāra mahaṃ tvāṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ .. 38 ..
"I am severely wasted, O best of brahmins, by the power of the consumptive disease; / therefore, bring about a cure; I have come to you for refuge. 38
5.63.39
mayā cikitsakāḥ pṛṣṭāstairuktaṃ bheṣajaṃ kṛtam ..
anekadhā mahābhāga parikṣīṇo dinedine .. 39 ..
I consulted physicians and took the remedies prescribed by them / in many ways, O fortunate one, yet I waste away day by day. 39
5.63.40
yadi naivopadeśaṃ me kañcittvaṃ saṃpradāsyasi ..
vyādhināśāya tattena tyakṣyāmyadya kalevaram .. 6.63.40 ..
If you do not impart to me some instruction / for the destruction of the disease, then because of it I shall cast off my body today." 40
5.63.41
.. romaka uvāca .. ..
anyasyāpi niśānātha na śāpaḥ kartumanyathā ..
śakyate kiṃ punastasya dakṣasyāmitatejasaḥ .. 41 ..
Romaka said: / "The curse even of another cannot be undone, O lord of night; / what then of that Dakṣa of boundless splendor? 41
5.63.42
tasmādatropadeśaṃ te prayacchāmi susaṃmatam ..
yena te syādasaṃdigdhaṃ kṣayavyādhi parikṣayaḥ .. 42 ..

teṣu saṃsthāpya talliṃgaṃ tasya nāśāya rātripa .. 44 ..
Truly, his dwelling is always on earth in the sixty-eight sacred fords; / having installed his liṅga in them for the destruction of that [disease], O lord of night, 44

tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā bhagavānvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ..
dakṣamāhūya tatraiva tataḥ provāca sādaram .. 49 ..

tasmādanugrahaṃ cāsya mama vākyātsamācara .. 6.63.50 ..

5.63.52
tena śaptastu kopena sutārthe vṛṣabhadhvaja ..
hāsyenāpi mayā proktaṃ nānyathā saṃprajāyate .. 52 ..

5.63.58
