6.1.3.14
ciṃtayannitthamīśo'pi viṣṇorāśramamabhyagāt ..
Reflecting thus, the Lord also went to the hermitage of Viṣṇu,

6.1.3.26
ko'nyo yogyo bhavedbhikṣurbhikṣādānasya sāṃpratam ..

6.1.3.28
taṃ bibhedāṃtargatajñaḥ śūlena śaśiśekharaḥ ..
Knowing his inner thought, the moon-crested god pierced it with his trident.
6.1.3.29
tataḥ pravāha utpannaḥ śoṇitasya vibhorbhujāt .. 14 ..
Then a stream of blood flowed from the arm of the Lord; // 14
6.1.3.30
jāṃbūnadarasākārā vahnijvāleva nirmalā ..
having the form of molten gold, pure like a flame of fire,
6.1.3.31
niṣpapāta kapālāṃte śaṃbhunā saṃpratīcchitā .. 15 ..
it fell into the skull, received by Śambhu. // 15

ṛjvī vegavatī śiprā dīdhitīvāṃbare raveḥ ..

6.1.3.37
tato nārāyaṇaḥ prāha haraṃ paramidaṃ vacaḥ .. 18 ..
Then Nārāyaṇa addressed these supreme words to Hara:
6.1.3.38
saṃpūrṇaṃ tava pātraṃ hi tato vai parameśvaraḥ ..
"Indeed, your vessel is full." Then the Supreme Lord,
6.1.3.39
satoyāṃbudanirghoṣaṃ śrutvā vākyaṃ harerharaḥ .. 19 ..
Hara, hearing the speech of Hari that sounded like a raincloud,
6.1.3.40
śaśisūryāgni nayanaḥ śaśiśekharaśobhitaḥ ..
whose eyes are the moon, sun, and fire, adorned with the crescent moon on his crest,
6.1.3.41
kapāle dṛṣṭimāveśya trinetraiśca janārdanam .. 5.1.3.20 ..
cast his gaze into the skull and looked at Janārdana with his three eyes.
6.1.3.42
aṃgulyā ghaṭayanprāha kapālaṃ cātipūritam ..
Stirring with his finger, he said: "The skull is overflowing."
6.1.3.43
śrutvā hariridaṃ vākyaṃ raktadhārāṃ samāharat .. 21 ..
Hearing this speech, Hari withdrew the stream of blood.
6.1.3.44
pārśvatotha harerīśaḥ svāṃgulyā rudhiraṃ tadā ..
Then from the side of Hari, the Lord with his own finger
6.1.3.45
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ ca dṛṣṭipātaṃ mamaṃtha vai .. 22 ..
churned that blood with the cast of his gaze for a divine thousand years.
6.1.3.46
mathyamāne tato rakte kalalaṃ budbudaṃ kramāt ..
As the blood was churned, there arose in succession an embryo and a bubble,
6.1.3.47
babhūva ca tataḥ paścātkirīṭī saśarāsanaḥ .. 23 ..
and after that there appeared one wearing a diadem and holding a bow,
6.1.3.48
sahasrabāhū raktākṣo dhanurjyāṃ saṃspṛśanmuhuḥ ..
having a thousand arms and red eyes, repeatedly touching the bowstring,
6.1.3.49
babhūva tūṇīragalo vṛṣaskaṃdhoṃ'gulitravān .. 24 ..
with a quiver at his neck, shoulders like a bull, and wearing archer's finger-guards.
6.1.3.50
puruṣo'rjunasaṃkāśaḥ kapāle saṃprakāśayan ..
A man resembling Arjuna shone forth in the skull.
6.1.3.51
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ prāha rudramidaṃ vacaḥ .. 25 ..
Seeing him, the blessed Viṣṇu addressed these words to Rudra:
6.1.3.52
kapāle bhagavanko'yaṃ prādurbhūto'bhavannaraḥ ..
"O Blessed One, who is this man who has manifested in the skull?"
6.1.3.53
uktiṃ śrutvā harerīśastamuvāca hare śṛṇu .. 26 ..
Hearing Hari's question, the Lord said to him: "Listen, O Hari!
6.1.3.54
naro nāmeti puruṣaḥ paramāstravidāṃvaraḥ ..
This man is named Nara, the foremost among knowers of supreme weapons.
6.1.3.55
yastvayokto nara iti narastasmādbha viṣyati .. 27 ..
Since he was addressed by you as 'Nara', he shall therefore be Nara.
6.1.3.56
naranārāyaṇau cobhau yuge khyātau bhaviṣyataḥ ..
Both Nara and Nārāyaṇa shall become renowned in the age,
6.1.3.57
saṃgrāme devakāryeṣu lokānāṃ paripālane .. 28 ..
in battle, in the tasks of the gods, and in the protection of the worlds.
6.1.3.58
eṣa nārāyaṇa sakhā narastava bhaviṣyati ..
O Nārāyaṇa, this Nara will be your friend;
6.1.3.59
tava ekākinaḥ saṃkhye tapasaśca mahāmuniḥ .. 29 ..
he will be a great sage companion for you when you are alone in battle and in austerity.
6.1.3.60
vijñānasya parīkṣāyai tejo loke bhaviṣyati ..
His brilliance will exist in the world to test experiential knowledge.
6.1.3.61
tejodhikamidaṃ divyaṃ brahmaṇaḥ paṃcamaṃ śiraḥ .. 5.1.3.30 ..
This divine fifth head of Brahmā possesses supreme splendour;
6.1.3.62
tejasā brahmaṇo dīpto bhujasya tava śoṇitāt ..
illuminated by the splendour of Brahmā, from the blood of your arm,
6.1.3.63
mama dṛṣṭinipātācca trīṇi tejāṃsi yānyataḥ .. 31 ..
and from the casting of my gaze—since these three splendours are combined,
6.1.3.64
tatsaṃyogātsamutpannaḥ śatrūnudvejayiṣyati ..
born from their union, he will cause distress to enemies.
6.1.3.65
avadhyā ye bhaviṣyaṃti durjayāstava cāpare .. 32 ..
Those who will be invincible and difficult to conquer for you and others,
6.1.3.66
śakrasya cāmarārīṇāṃ teṣāmeva bhayaṃkaraḥ ..
and terrifying to Śakra and the foes of the immortals—he will terrify precisely them."
6.1.3.67
evamuktavataḥ śaṃbhorvismitastasya tejasā .. 33 ..
When Śambhu had spoken thus, amazed by his splendour,
6.1.3.68
harirapi sa tatraiva tuṣṭāva harakeśavau ..
Hari also, right there, praised Hara and Keśava:
6.1.3.69
namo hara hare tubhyaṃ namaḥ śaṃkara viṣṇave .. 34 ..
"Salutations to you, O Hara, O Hari! Salutations to Śaṃkara, to Viṣṇu!
6.1.3.70
namaste śūlahastāya namaste khaṅgapā ṇaye ..
Salutations to you who hold the trident in hand! Salutations to you who hold the sword in hand!
6.1.3.71
namonamaste medhyāya hṛṣīkeśa namo'stu te .. 35 ..
Homage, homage to you, the pure one! O Hṛṣīkeśa, salutations be to you!
6.1.3.72
namo'stu vācāṃ pataye śrīdharāya namonamaḥ ..
Salutations be to the Lord of speech! Homage, homage to Śrīdhara!"
6.1.3.73
evaṃ stuvantaṃ taṃ bhaktyā kṛtāṃjali puṭaṃ naram.. 36 ..
To that Nara who was thus praising with devotion, his hands joined in reverence,
6.1.3.74
tathaivāṃjalisaṃbaddhaṃ gṛhītvāśu karadvayam..
quickly taking both his hands which were joined in reverence in that same manner,
6.1.3.75
uddhṛtyātha kapālāttu punarvacanamabravīt .. 37 ..
and lifting him out of the skull, [Hara] spoke these words again:
6.1.3.76
ya eva puruṣo raudro brahmaṇaḥ svedasaṃ bhavaḥ ..
"That terrible being born of Brahmā's sweat,
6.1.3.77
mama huṃkāraśabdena mohanidrāmupāgataḥ .. 38 ..
who fell into a sleep of delusion at the sound of my hum roar—
6.1.3.78
nibodha taṃ ca tvaritamityuktvāṃtarhito haraḥ ..
awaken him quickly!" Having spoken thus, Hara vanished.
6.1.3.79
nārāyaṇasya pratyakṣaṃ bodhayitvā drutaṃ hi tam.. 39 ..
Having quickly awakened him before Nārāyaṇa's eyes
6.1.3.80
vāmapādena hatvā ca samuttasthau naro ruṣā ..
and struck him with his left foot, Nara stood up in anger.
6.1.3.81
tayoryuddhaṃ samabhavatsvedaraktajayormahat .. 5.1.3.40 ..
A great battle took place between the two, the one born of sweat and the one born of blood,
6.1.3.82
visphāritadhanuḥśabdairnāditāśeṣabhūta lam..
making the entire earth resound with the twang of their drawn bows.
6.1.3.83
kavacaṃ svedajasyaikaṃ raktajasya tathā bhujau ..41..
One piece of armour remained for the sweat-born one, and likewise two arms for the blood-born one.
6.1.3.84
evaṃ samena vai yuddhaṃ divyaṃ jātaṃ tu bhūtale ..
Thus an equally matched divine battle took place on earth.
6.1.3.85
trivarṣonāni varṣāṇāṃ śatāni daśa sudvija..42..
A thousand years less three, O good twice-born,
6.1.3.86
yudhyato samatītāni svedaraktajayormune ..
passed while the two, the sweat-born and the blood-born, were fighting, O sage.
6.1.3.87
raktajo dvibhujo dṛṣṭvā kavacaikena svedajam .. 43 ..
The two-armed blood-born one, seeing the sweat-born one with only one piece of armour,
6.1.3.88
bibheda bāṇavegena brahmaṇastaṃ naraṃ param ..
pierced that supreme man of Brahmā with the force of his arrows.
6.1.3.89
sasaṃbhramamu vācedaṃ brahmāṇaṃ madhusūdanaḥ .. 44 ..
Madhusūdana, agitated, said this to Brahmā:
6.1.3.90
mannareṇocchrito brahmaṃstvadīyo vinipātitaḥ ..
"O Brahmā, the exalted one belonging to you has been struck down by my Nara."
6.1.3.91
śrutvā tadākulo brahmā babhāṣe madhusūdanam .. 45 ..
Hearing that, Brahmā, perturbed, spoke to Madhusūdana:
6.1.3.92
hare'nyajanmani naro madīyo yadi hīyate ..
"O Hari, if my Nara is vanquished, in another birth..."
6.1.3.93
tena tuṣṭena saṃproktaṃ hariṇaivaṃ bhaviṣyati .. 46 ..
By him, gratified, Hari said: "It shall be so."
6.1.3.94
kṛtvā tayo raṇamapi nivārya tāvuvāca ha ..
Putting an end to their battle and stopping the two, he indeed said:
6.1.3.95
athānyajanmani naro madīyo bhavitā kalau .. 47 ..
"Then in another birth, my Nara will be [born] in Kali [Yuga]."
6.1.3.96
tato mahāraṇe jāte tatrāhaṃ yojayāmi tam ..
"Then, when a great battle arises, I shall appoint him there."
6.1.3.97
viṣṇunātha samāhūya maheśvarasureśvarau .. 48 ..
Then, having summoned Maheśvara and the Lord of Gods (Indra), Viṣṇu
6.1.3.98
uktāvimau narau rudrau pālanīyau svaśaktitaḥ ..
said to them: "These two men, O Rudras, must be protected according to your power.
6.1.3.99
svedajātāsṛgjātau tu svakīyāṃśau dharātale ..
Born from sweat and born from blood, they are portions of yourself upon the earth.
6.1.3.100
svāṃśabhūtau dvāparāṃte niyojyau bhūtale tvayā .. 49 ..
Having become your own portions, they are to be directed by you upon the surface of the earth at the end of Dvāpara."
6.1.3.101
tato'bravīttadā viṣṇuṃ sureśo duḥkhitaṃ vacaḥ .. 5.1.3.50 ..
Then the Lord of Gods (Indra) spoke these sorrowful words to Viṣṇu:
6.1.3.102
asminmanvaṃtare deva tretāyugaṃ tadā yadā ..
"O Lord, in this manvantara, back when it was the Tretāyuga,
6.1.3.103
tvadrūpeṇeha mahatā sūryaputrahitārthinā ..
by your great form here, desiring the welfare of the son of the Sun,
6.1.3.104
vālīnāma mahābāhuḥ sugrīvārthe nipātitaḥ .. 51 ..
the mighty-armed one named Vālin was struck down for the sake of Sugrīva.
6.1.3.105
tena duḥkhena tapto'haṃ nāhaṃ gṛhṇāmi te naram ..
Afflicted by that grief, I will not accept your man."
6.1.3.106
agṛhṇamānaṃ deveśaṃ kāraṇāṃtaravādinam .. 52 ..
To the Lord of Gods who was refusing and stating another reason,
6.1.3.107
viṣṇuḥ provāca maghavanbhuvo bhārāvatāraṇe..
Viṣṇu said: "O Maghavan, to remove the burden of the earth,
6.1.3.108
avatāraṃ kariṣyāmi martyaloke'pyahaṃ vibho..53..
I too shall take an incarnation in the mortal world, O mighty lord."
6.1.3.109
tato hṛṣṭo'bhavacchakro viṣṇuvākyena tena vai..
Then Śakra became delighted indeed by those words of Viṣṇu.
6.1.3.110
pratigṛhya naraṃ hṛṣṭaḥ satyamastu vacastava .. 54 ..
Having accepted the man, rejoiced, [he said]: "May your word be true!"
6.1.3.111
ityuktvā tu ravīndrau sa preṣayitvā ca tau punaḥ ..
Having said this, and having dismissed the sun and the moon,
6.1.3.112
gatvā ca puṇḍarīkākṣo brahmāṇaṃ brahmaveśmani .. 55 ..
the lotus-eyed one (Viṣṇu) went to Brahmā in the abode of Brahmā [and said]:
6.1.3.113
kṛtaṃ jugupsitaṃ karma brahmannīśaṃ jighāṃsatā ..
"O Brahmā, a detestable deed was done by you desiring to kill the Lord,
6.1.3.114
yattvayā devadeveśa pumānkopena bhāṣitaḥ .. 56 ..
in that you, O lord of the gods of gods, addressed a man in anger.
6.1.3.115
śuddhyarthamasya pāpasya prāyaścittaṃ paraṃ kuru ..
For the purification of this sin, perform a supreme expiation.
6.1.3.116
gṛhṇanvahnitrayaṃ brahmannagni hotramupāsva ha .. 57 ..
Taking the triad of fires, O Brahmā, worship the agnihotra.
6.1.3.117
eko vai gārhapatyo'stu dvitīyāhavanīyakaḥ ..
Let one indeed be the Gārhapatya, the second the Āhavanīya,
6.1.3.118
dakṣiṇāgnistṛtīyastu trikuṇḍeṣu prakalpaya .. 58 ..
and the third the Dakṣiṇāgni; arrange them in three fire-pits.
6.1.3.119
vartule tarpayātmānaṃ māmatho dhanuṣākṛtau ..
Gratify yourself in the circular one, me in the one shaped like a bow,
6.1.3.120
catuṣkoṇe haraṃ devamṛgyajuḥsāmanāmabhiḥ .. 59 ..
and god Hara in the four-cornered one, with the names of the Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāman.
6.1.3.121
hutvā tvagniṃ ca tapasā haramevārcya tatkṣaṇāt ..
Offering oblations into the fire with austerity, and immediately worshipping Hara alone,
6.1.3.122
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ tu hutvāgniṃ siddhimāpsyasi .. 5.1.3.60 ..
having offered into the fire for a thousand divine years, you will attain perfection.
6.1.3.123
prāyaścittaviśuddhātmā pratipadya maheśvaram..
With your self purified by expiation, having attained Maheśvara,
6.1.3.124
tato niṣkalmaṣo bhūtvā viṣādaste gamiṣyati .. 61 ..
becoming free from blemish, your dejection will then depart."
6.1.3.125
ityevamuktvā harirugratejā gataḥ svakīyaṃ nilayaṃ mahātmā ..
Having spoken thus, the noble Hari of fierce splendor departed to his own abode.
6.1.3.126
brahmāpi cittaṃ tapase nidhāya samādadhe sarvamathācyutoktam ..62..
Brahmā also, fixing his mind on austerity, carried out all that was spoken by Acyuta.
6.1.3.127
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāha sryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ paṃcama āvaṃtyakhaṇḍe'vaṃtīkṣetramāhātmye brahmaṇaḥ prāyaścittavarṇanaṃnāma tṛtīyo'dhyāyaḥ .. 3 ..cha...
Thus ends the third chapter, named 'Description of the Expiation of Brahmā', in the Avantīkṣetramāhātmya in the fifth Avantyakhaṇḍa in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, a compendium of eighty-one thousand [verses].
