there lived a seer named Maṅkaṇaka, master of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas,

constantly devoted to the practice of yoga, firmly established in calmness and self-restraint. // 2

How will this transformation consisting of blood come to an end?' // 3
6.2.2.9
iti saṃciṃtya hṛdaye prārabdhaṃ tapa uttamam ..
Having reflected thus in his heart, he undertook supreme tapas;
6.2.2.10
bahūnyabdasahasrāṇi tasyātītāni pārvati .. 4 ..
many thousands of years passed for him, O Pārvatī. // 4
6.2.2.11
kasmiṃścidatha kāle tu viddhasya parvatātmaje ..
Then, at a certain time, O daughter of the mountain, as he was pricked
6.2.2.12
karācchākaraso jātaḥ kuśāgreṇa tadaiva hi .. 5 ..
by the tip of a kuśa grass, vegetable sap flowed at that very moment from his hand. // 5
6.2.2.13
sa ca dṛṣṭvā tadāścaryaṃ vismayaṃ paramaṃ gataḥ ..
And seeing that wonder, he was filled with supreme astonishment;
6.2.2.14
mene siddhiṃ parāṃ prāptāṃ sagarvo vākyamabravīt .. 6 ..
he thought that he had attained the supreme siddhi, and spoke proudly: // 6
6.2.2.15
aho tapaḥprabhāvo'yaṃ prāptā siddhirmayādya vai ..

mattulyo nāsti vai vipro yena siddhiḥ samāgatā .. 7 ..
Truly there is no brahmin equal to me, by whom siddhi has been attained! // 7

And this body is contemptible, filled with feces and urine,
6.2.2.18
mantrasnāyuvasāpṛktamāṃsaśoṇitapūritam ..
entangled with intestines, sinews, and fat, and filled with flesh and blood.'
6.2.2.19
harṣeṇa mahatā yuktaḥ sa nanartta dvijastathā .. 8 ..
Filled with great joy, the twice-born then began to dance. // 8
6.2.2.20
etasminnṛtyati vipre jagatsthāvara jaṃgamam ..
While this brahmin was dancing, the world, both stationary and moving,
6.2.2.21
anṛtyadrāgasaṃyuktaṃ prabhāvāttasya vai muneḥ .. 9 ..
began to dance, filled with passion, by the power of that sage indeed. // 9
6.2.2.22
na svādhyāyo vaṣaṭkāraḥ karmakāṃḍo na ca kvacit .. 5.2.2.10 ..
Nowhere was there any study of the Veda, the utterance of 'vaṣaṭ', or the performance of rituals. // 10
6.2.2.23
etasminnaṃtare devā brahmaviṣṇu puraḥsarāḥ ..
In the meantime, the gods, led by Brahmā and Viṣṇu,
6.2.2.24
māmūcurvismitāḥ sarve nātha nṛtyaṃ tadā kuru .. 11 ..
all filled with wonder, said to me: 'O Lord, then do dance!
6.2.2.25
ṛṣau maṃkaṇake deva nṛtyati nṛtyati sarvataḥ ..
When the seer Maṅkaṇaka dances, O Lord, everything dances on all sides—
6.2.2.26
sadevāsuramānuṣyaṃ sarvaṃ lokatrayaṃ vibho .. 12 ..
the entire threefold world, O All-pervading One, including gods, asuras, and humans. // 12

the mountain peaks are crumbling; the earth is deeply afflicted; // 13
6.2.2.29

trailokyaṃ vyākulībhūtaṃ yāvannāyāti saṃkṣayam ..
The threefold world is agitated; before it meets destruction,
6.2.2.31
tāvannivārayasvainaṃ nānyaḥ śakto vinā tvayā .. 15 ..
restrain him! None other than you is capable.' // 15
6.2.2.32
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā tridaśānāṃ yaśasvini ..
Hearing those words of the gods, O renowned lady,
6.2.2.33
pratijñātaṃ mayātyarthaṃ gatvā tasya samīpataḥ .. 16 ..
I promised [to do so], and having gone near him, // 16
6.2.2.34
dvijarūpaṃ samāsthāya mayā pṛṣṭo dvijottamaḥ ..
assuming the form of a brahmin, I questioned that best of brahmins:
6.2.2.35
kimarthaṃ nṛtyasi brahmankasmātte harṣa āgataḥ .. 17 ..
'Why do you dance, O brahmin? Whence has this joy come to you? // 17
6.2.2.36
viruddhamṛṣidharmāṇāṃ kāmarāgeṇa narttanam ..
Dancing out of passion and desire is contrary to the duties of seers;
6.2.2.37
gītaṃ ca narttanaṃ caiva yuvatījanavallabham .. 18 ..
singing and dancing are beloved only by young women. // 18
6.2.2.38
brāhmaṇasya tapo bhraṃśaḥ sadācārasya sattama ..
It is the destruction of tapas and right conduct for a brahmin, O best of men.
6.2.2.39
iti matvā dvijaśreṣṭha kimarthaṃ nṛtyase bhṛśam.. 19 ..
Reflecting thus, O best of brahmins, why do you dance so vehemently?' // 19
6.2.2.40
.. ṛṣiruvāca .. ..
The seer said:
6.2.2.41
kiṃ na paśyasi bho brahmankarācchākarasaṃ cyutam ..
'Do you not see, O brahmin, the vegetable sap flowing from my hand?
6.2.2.42
ataeva hi me nṛtyaṃ siddho'haṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ .. 5.2.2.20 ..
For this very reason is my dancing; I have attained siddhi, of this there is no doubt.' // 20
6.2.2.43
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā hāso'tīva mayā kṛtaḥ ..
Hearing his words, I laughed heartily,
6.2.2.44
aṃguṣṭhastāḍitaḥ svīyoṃgulyagreṇa ca pārvati .. 21 ..
and struck my own thumb with the tip of my finger, O Pārvatī. // 21
6.2.2.45
tato vinirgataṃ bhasma tatkṣaṇāddhimapāṃḍuram ..
Then, instantly, ashes as white as snow came forth [from it].
6.2.2.46
hāsenokto viśālākṣi sagarvo brāhmaṇo mayā .. 22 ..
With a laugh, O large-eyed lady, that proud brahmin was addressed by me: // 22
6.2.2.47
paśya meṃ'guṣṭhato brahmanbhūri bhasma vinirgatam ..
'See, O brahmin, abundant ashes have come forth from my thumb!
6.2.2.48
na nṛtyehaṃ na me harṣastathāpi munissama .. 23 ..
Even so, I do not dance, nor do I have joy, O equal among sages.' // 23
6.2.2.49
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ lajjito dvijasattamaḥ ..
Seeing that great wonder, the best of brahmins was ashamed,
6.2.2.50
dhairyaṃ ca tādṛśaṃ dṛṣṭvā vismayaṃ paramaṃ gataḥ .. 24 ..
and seeing such fortitude, he attained supreme astonishment. // 24
6.2.2.51
abravītprāṃjalirbhūtvā vismitenāṃtarātmanā ..
With folded hands, his heart filled with wonder, he said:
6.2.2.52
nānyaṃ devamahaṃ manye tvāṃ muktvā vṛṣabhadhvajam .. 25 ..
'I consider you no other deity than the bull-bannered [Śiva]! // 25
6.2.2.53
nānyasya vidyate śakti rīdṛśī bhuvanatraye ..
No one else in the three worlds possesses such power.
6.2.2.54
tasmātkṣamasva deveśa mayājñānādanuṣṭhitam .. 26 ..
Therefore, forgive me, O Lord of the gods, what was done by me through ignorance! // 26
6.2.2.55
tapaḥkṣayakaraṃ karma viruddhaṃ narttanaṃ satām..
Dancing is an act that destroys tapas, contrary [to the conduct] of the virtuous.
6.2.2.56
bahukālārjitaṃ puṇyaṃ tapasā duṣka reṇa tu ..
The merit acquired over a long time through difficult tapas,
6.2.2.57
tadgataṃ sahasā deva madīyaṃ narttanena su .. 27 ..
that merit of mine has suddenly perished, O Lord, through dancing. // 27 //'
6.2.2.58
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā mayokto dvijasattamaḥ ..
Hearing his words, that best of brahmins was addressed by me:
6.2.2.59
varaṃ varaya bhadraṃ te tuṣṭo'haṃ dvijasattama .. 28 ..
'Choose a boon, may good betide you; I am pleased, O best of brahmins.' // 28
6.2.2.60
jñānenānena vipreṃdra kaṃ te kāmaṃ karomyaham ..29 ..
With this knowledge, O leader of brahmins, what desire of yours shall I fulfill?”
6.2.2.61
ṛṣiruvāca .. ..
The seer said:
6.2.2.62
yadi deva prasannastvaṃ śaraṇāgatavatsala ..
“If you are pleased, O Lord, compassionate to those who seek refuge,
6.2.2.63
yathā na syāttapohānistathā nītirvidhīyatām..5.2.2.30..
let such a path be decreed that there may be no loss of my austerity.”
6.2.2.64
mayā proktaṃ prasannena tasya viprasya pārvati ..
I said to that brahmin, O Pārvatī, being pleased [with him]:
6.2.2.65
tapaste varddhatāṃ vipra mahākālavanaṃ vraja..31..
“May your austerity increase, O brahmin! Go to the forest of Mahākāla.
6.2.2.66
tatrāste sarvadā puṇyā saptakalpodbhavā guhā..
There lies eternally a holy cave, arisen through seven cosmic cycles,
6.2.2.67
piśāceśvaradevasya uttareṇa vyavasthitā .. 32 ..
situated to the north of Lord Piśāceśvara.
6.2.2.68
tatra drakṣyasi yalliṃgaṃ saptakalpodbhavaṃ śubham..
There you will see an auspicious liṅga arisen through seven cosmic cycles;
6.2.2.69
tasya darśanamātreṇa tapaste vṛddhimeṣyati ..33..
by merely beholding it, your austerity will increase.
6.2.2.70
kāma krodhodbhavaṃ pāpaṃ lobhamohasamanvitam ..
Sin born of lust and anger, accompanied by greed and delusion,
6.2.2.71
īrṣyāmatsarajaṃ caiva nāśaṃ yāti ca kilbiṣam ..34..
as well as the taint born of envy and jealousy, is destroyed.”
6.2.2.72
madīyaṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā sa vipro vedapāragaḥ ..
Having heard my word, that brahmin, a master of the Vedas,
6.2.2.73
śrutvā ca niyamaṃ devi maduktaṃ sa tato dvijaḥ .. 35 ..
and having heard the rule spoken by me, O goddess, that twice-born
6.2.2.74
niḥsṛto niyato bhūtvā namaskṛtya punaḥpunaḥ ..
set forth, having disciplined himself, bowing again and again.
6.2.2.75
ājagāma guhā yatra mahākālavanottame.. 36..
He came to where the cave was in the excellent forest of Mahākāla.
6.2.2.76
dadarśa tatra talliṃgaṃ tapaso varddhanaṃ param ..
There he saw that liṅga, supreme increaser of austerity;
6.2.2.77
dvādaśādityasaṃkāśo jāto vai liṃgadarśanāt ..37..
resembling the twelve suns, he indeed became so through the darśana of the liṅga.
6.2.2.78
etasminnaṃtare devi devairuktaṃ nabhastale ..
In the meantime, O goddess, the gods said in the firmament:
6.2.2.79
gopyaṃ liṃgaṃ guhotthaṃ tu dṛṣṭaṃ maṃkaṇakena tu ..38..
“The secret liṅga arisen in the cave has been seen by Maṅkaṇaka!
6.2.2.80
siddhiḥ prāptā dvijenaiva darśanena sudurlabhā ..
Siddhi exceedingly difficult to attain has been obtained by the brahmin through darśana alone.
6.2.2.81
tasmādguheśvaro devi bhaviṣyati mahītale ..39..
Therefore, O goddess, it will be known as Guheśvara on the earth.
6.2.2.82
bhaktyā paramayopetā ye drakṣyaṃti guheśvaram ..
Those who, endowed with supreme devotion, shall see Guheśvara,
6.2.2.83
na teṣāṃ jāyate vighno dharmasya tapasastathā .. 5.2.2.40 ..
for them no obstacle to righteousness or austerity shall arise.
6.2.2.84
aṣṭamyāṃ vā caturdaśyāṃ darśanaṃ yaḥ kariṣyati ..
Whoever performs darśana on the eighth or the fourteenth day,
6.2.2.85
brahmalokaṃ gamiṣyaṃti pitarastasya dehinaḥ .. 41 ..
the ancestors of that embodied soul will go to the world of Brahmā.
6.2.2.86
atrāgatya prayatnena darśanaṃ yaḥ kariṣyati ..
Whoever comes here and performs darśana with effort
6.2.2.87
uddhariṣyati cātmānaṃ puruṣānekaviṃśatim.. 42 ..
will deliver himself and twenty-one generations of ancestors.
6.2.2.88
kṛtvā pāpasahasrāṇi darśanaṃ yaḥ kariṣyati ..
Even having committed thousands of sins, whoever performs darśana
6.2.2.89
sa yāti paramaṃ sthānaṃ yatra devo maheśvaraḥ .. 43 ..
goes to the supreme abode where Lord Maheśvara resides.
6.2.2.90
brahmahatyā surāpānaṃ steyaṃ gurvaṃganāgamaḥ ..
Killing a brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, intercourse with the teacher's wife—
6.2.2.91
darśanāttasyaliṃgasya sarvaṃ yāsyati saṃkṣayam .. 44 ..
all will be utterly destroyed through the darśana of that liṅga.
6.2.2.92
yatkiṃcidaśubhaṃ karma janmakoṭiśatārjitam ..
Whatever inauspicious deed was acquired across hundreds of crores of births,
6.2.2.93
kṣayaṃ yāsyati tatsarvaṃ sparśamātreṇa nānyathā .. 45 ..
all that will come to destruction merely through touch, not otherwise.
6.2.2.94
mahāpātakayuktā hi dehino ye mahītale ..
Indeed, embodied beings on earth who are tainted with heinous crimes,
6.2.2.95
te'pi liṃgaṃ samāsādya mucyaṃte sarvapātakaiḥ .. 46 ..
even they, having approached the liṅga, are liberated from all sins.”
6.2.2.96
ityuktvā sa dvijo devi divyo maṃkaṇako muniḥ ..
Having spoken thus, O goddess, that divine brahmin, the sage Maṅkaṇaka,
6.2.2.97
kṛtvāśramapadaṃ puṇyaṃ tatraiva tapasi sthitaḥ .. 47 ..
established a holy hermitage and remained there in austerity.
6.2.2.98
eṣa vai kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ ..
This glory which destroys sin has indeed been told to you, O goddess;
6.2.2.99
śravaṇātkīrttanādvāpi sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate .. 48 ..
by hearing it or recounting it, one is completely freed from all sins.
6.2.2.100

Thus ends the second chapter, entitled ‘Description of the Glory of Guheśvara’ in the ‘Glory of the Eighty-Four Liṅgas’ of the fifth section, the Āvantyakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
