6.2.4.1
śrīmahādeva uvāca ..
The venerable Mahādeva said:
6.2.4.2
khyāto'vaṃtyāṃ caturtho'sau devo ḍamarukeśvaraḥ..
The fourth god is renowned in Avantī as Ḍamarukeśvara,
6.2.4.3
dṛṣṭe yasmiñjagannāthe yāti pāpaṃ ca saṃkṣayam ..1..
upon seeing whom, the Lord of the universe, sin comes to an end.
6.2.4.4
purā vaivasvate kalpe rururnāma mahāsuraḥ ..
Formerly, in the Vaivasvata kalpa, there was a great asura named Ruru.
6.2.4.5
tasya putro mahābāhurvajronāma mahābalaḥ ..
His son was named Vajra, long-armed and of great strength;
6.2.4.6
babhūva sumahākāyastīkṣṇadaṃṣṭro bhayaṃkaraḥ .. 2 ..
he possessed a very gigantic body, sharp fangs, and was terrifying.
6.2.4.7
tena devāḥ svādhikārāccālitāstridaśāla yāt .. 3 ..
By him, the gods were expelled from their office and from the abode of the thirty [gods].
6.2.4.8
tato nītaṃ dhanaṃ teṣāṃ brahmāṇaṃ te tato yayuḥ ..
Then, their wealth was taken, and they went to Brahmā.
6.2.4.9
brahmāpi bhayasaṃvigno babhūvākuliteṃdriyaḥ .. 4 ..
Brahmā too became agitated with fear, his senses distressed.
6.2.4.10
jñātvāvadhyaṃ suraiḥ sārdhaṃ sarvaiḥ so'thamahā balaḥ ..
Knowing that [demon] of great strength to be invulnerable to all the gods together,
6.2.4.11
teṣu naṣṭeṣu ye viprā yajvāno'tha tapasvinaḥ ..
and when they had fled, whichever brahmins were sacrificers or practitioners of austerities,
6.2.4.12
tāñjaghāna sa duṣṭātmā ye cānye dharmacāriṇaḥ .. 5 ..
that wicked-souled one slew them, as well as others who followed dharma.
6.2.4.13
niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṃ tadāsīddharaṇīta talam..
The surface of the earth then became devoid of Vedic study and the exclamation vaṣaṭ;
6.2.4.14
naṣṭayajñotsavaṃ devi hāhābhūtamacetanam .. 6..
its sacrificial festivities lost, O goddess, it was filled with cries of grief and rendered senseless.
6.2.4.15
tataḥ pravyathitā devāstathā sarve maharṣayaḥ ..
Then the gods, deeply distressed, and likewise all the great seers,
6.2.4.16
sametyāmaṃtrayanmaṃtraṃ vadhārthaṃ tasya durmateḥ .. 7 ..
assembled and held counsel for the slaying of that evil-minded one.
6.2.4.17
tataḥ kāyo'bhavatsadyaḥ sarveṣāṃ puratastadā ..
Then, at that moment, a body suddenly appeared before them all,
6.2.4.18
teṣāṃ ciṃtayatāṃ devi tejaḥpuṃjena cāvṛtaḥ .. 8 ..
as they were deliberating, O goddess, enveloped in a mass of splendour.
6.2.4.19
tasmātkṛtyā samutpannā divyā kamalalocanā ..
From it, a divine Kṛtyā arose, having lotus-like eyes,
6.2.4.20
dyotayaṃtī diśaḥ sarvāḥ svatejobhiḥ samaṃtataḥ .. 9 ..
illuminating all the directions on every side with her own splendours.
6.2.4.21
sābravīttridaśānsarvānkasmātsṛṣṭā hyahaṃ surāḥ ..
She said to all the thirty [gods]: “Why indeed have I been created, O gods?
6.2.4.22
yatkartavyaṃ mayā karma tacchīghraṃ saṃnivedyatām .. 5.2.4.10 ..
Whatever deed must be done by me, let that be announced quickly!”
6.2.4.23
tatastu tridaśāḥ sarve śrutvā tasyāḥ śubhā giraḥ ..
Then, having heard her auspicious words, all the thirty [gods]
6.2.4.24
ācakhyuḥ sakalaṃ tasyai tadā vajrasya ceṣṭitam .. 11 ..
related to her all the deeds of Vajra at that time.
6.2.4.25
śrutvā jahāsa sā devī sāṭṭahāsaṃ muhur muhuḥ ..
Having heard this, that goddess laughed repeatedly with loud laughter.
6.2.4.26
tasyā hasaṃtyā niḥsasruḥ kanyāḥ kamalalocanāḥ .. 12 ..
As she laughed, lotus-eyed maidens came forth [from her],
6.2.4.27
pāśāṃkuśadharā raudrā jvālāmālāvṛtānanāḥ ..
holding nooses and goads, terrible, their faces surrounded by garlands of flames,
6.2.4.28
phetkāreṇa ca saṃnādaiścālayaṃtyaścarācaram .. 13 ..
shaking the moving and unmoving creation with their shrieks and roars.
6.2.4.29
gatāḥ sarvā mahādevi yatra vajro mahāsuraḥ ..
They all went, O great goddess, to where the great asura Vajra was.
6.2.4.30
yuddhaṃ tu tumulaṃ jātaṃ tābhistasya bhayāvaham .. 14 ..
A tumultuous battle, terrifying to him, then took place with them.
6.2.4.31
śastrāstrairbahudhā muktairvyāptaṃ caiva digaṃtaram ..
The intermediate space of the directions was pervaded by weapons and missiles discharged in many ways;
6.2.4.32
saṃnaddhākhilasainyāste yuyudhuḥ samare bhṛśam .. 15 ..
with their entire army clad in armour, they fought intensely in battle.
6.2.4.33
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ tayā devyā suradviṣām ..
Then a battle began between that goddess and the enemies of the gods.
6.2.4.34
tato mātṛgaṇaṃ kruddhaṃ marddayantaṃ mahāsu rān ..
Then, seeing the enraged troop of mothers crushing the great asuras,
6.2.4.35
parāṅmukhaṃ balaṃ dṛṣṭvā vajro māyāmathāsṛjat .. 16 ..
and seeing his army turned back, Vajra then released an illusion,
6.2.4.36
tāmasīṃnāma duḥsādhyāṃ yayā muhyati kanyakāḥ .. 17 ..
named Tāmasī, difficult to overcome, by which the maidens were bewildered.
6.2.4.37
tamobhūte tatastasminsā devī bhayavihvalā ..
When it had become darkness, that goddess, overwhelmed with fear,
6.2.4.38
tābhiḥ sārddhaṃ samāyātā mahākālavanottamam .. 18 ..
came along with them to the supreme Mahākālavana,
6.2.4.39
kapālavānharo yatra liṃgākāreṇa saṃsthitaḥ ..
where Hara, holding a skull, was stationed in the form of a liṅga.
6.2.4.40
jñātvā mātṛgaṇaṃ naṣṭaṃ tato māyāprabhāvataḥ .. 19 ..
Having learned that the troop of mothers had fled due to the power of that illusion,
6.2.4.41
vajro'pi tridaśāñjñātvā devyā sārddhamathopi(ṣi?)tān ..
and Vajra also knowing that the thirty [gods] were residing together with the goddess,
6.2.4.42
ājagāma tamuddeśaṃ svasainyaparivāritaḥ .. 5.2.4.20 ..
he came to that place surrounded by his own army.
6.2.4.43
mahākālavane divye rathakoṭiśatairvṛtaḥ..
In the divine Mahākālavana, surrounded by hundreds of millions of chariots,
6.2.4.44
samaṃtācca vanaṃ devi tatkruddho vākyamabravīt ..21..
he, enraged, spoke these words on all sides of the forest, O goddess:
6.2.4.45
adya devānhaniṣyāmi tayā sākaṃ suduṣṭayā ..
“Today I will kill the gods along with that extremely wicked woman,
6.2.4.46
kanyābhiḥ saha yā naṣṭā tamomāyābalena tu..22..
who fled together with the maidens by the power of the illusion of darkness!”
6.2.4.47
etasminnaṃtare kāle nārado munisattamaḥ..
Meanwhile, Nārada, the best of sages,
6.2.4.48
sotsukastu samāyāto maṃdare cārukaṃdare.. 23 ..
arrived full of eagerness at the beautiful cave on Mount Mandara.
6.2.4.49
kathayāmāsa devanāṃ vajrāddevaparābhavam..24..
He told the Lord of the defeat of the gods by Vajra:
6.2.4.50
mahākālavane deva tāḍitāsttridaśāḥ prabho..
“O God, the thirty [gods] have been struck down in the Mahākālavana, O Lord,
6.2.4.51
vajreṇa ruruputreṇa tasmādyāhi maheśvara..25..
by Vajra, the son of Ruru; therefore, go forth, O Maheśvara!”
6.2.4.52
nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā tato'haṃ parameśvari..
Having heard the words of Nārada, then I, O supreme goddess,
6.2.4.53
maṃdarādāgatastūrṇaṃ kṛtvā rūpaṃ subhairavam..26..
came swiftly from Mandara, having assumed a most terrible form,
6.2.4.54
sarpairlasadbhiratyugrairbhīṣaṇairgaṇasaṃvṛtaḥ..
surrounded by gaṇas, with flashing, extremely fierce and dreadful serpents.
6.2.4.55
agre dṛṣṭaṃ mahatsainyaṃ dānavānāṃ bhayāvaham..27..
In front was seen the great army of the dānavas, terrifying to behold.
6.2.4.56
mahākālavanaṃ ruddhaṃ samaṃtādasureṇa tu ..
Mahākālavana was besieged on all sides by the asura,
6.2.4.57
vajreṇa ruruputreṇa duḥsahena yaśasvini .. 28 ..
by Vajra, the son of Ruru, who was irresistible, O renowned lady.
6.2.4.58
tadāgatya mayā tāḍya raudraṃ ḍamarukaṃ tathā ..
Then arriving, by beating the dreadful ḍamaruka drum,
6.2.4.59
mohitaṃ sahasā sainyaṃ vajrasyaiva durātmanaḥ .. 29 ..
the army of that wicked-souled Vajra was instantly stupefied by me.
6.2.4.60
ḍamarukasya nādena hyutthitaṃ liṃgamuttamam ..
By the sound of the ḍamaruka, an excellent liṅga arose,
6.2.4.61
vidārya vasudhāṃ devi jvālāmālākulaṃ tadā .. 5.2.4.30 ..
cleaving the earth, O goddess, filled with garlands of flames at that time.
6.2.4.62
tasya liṃgasya ca tadā mahājvālā vinirgatā ..
And from that liṅga there issued forth a great flame,
6.2.4.63
ekadeśādvarārohe brahmāṃḍavyāpinī tathā .. 31 ..
from one part [of it], O lady of beautiful hips, which pervaded the cosmic egg.
6.2.4.64
liṃgasyānyapradeśāttu vāyuḥ samabhavanmahān .. 32 ..
From another part of the liṅga, a mighty wind arose.
6.2.4.65
tejojvālāsamūhena vātena preritena ca ..
By the mass of blazing fire and driven on by the wind,
6.2.4.66
saha cakreṇa tatsainyaṃ dagdhaṃ bhasmatvamāgatam .. 33 ..
that army, along with its chariots, was burnt and reduced to ashes.
6.2.4.67
tato devagaṇāḥ sarve harṣanirbharamānasāḥ ..
Then all the hosts of gods, their minds filled with overflowing joy,
6.2.4.68
namaścakrurha te tasminruruputre mahābale .. 34 ..
bowed down to that mighty son of Ruru.
6.2.4.69
asya devasya māhātmyāddagdho vajro mahābalaḥ ..
Because of the majesty of this god, the mighty Vajra was burnt
6.2.4.70
sasainyobhūttatastasmādeṣa ḍamarukeśvaraḥ ..
along with his army; therefore, from that, this [god], Ḍamarukeśvara,
6.2.4.71
khyātiṃ yāsyati lokesminsarvakāmaphalapradaḥ .. 35 ..
will attain renown in this world, granting the fruits of all desires.
6.2.4.72
ḍamarukasya tu nādena jāto yasmānmahītale ..
Since he arose on the surface of the earth from the sound of the ḍamaruka drum,
6.2.4.73
ataḥ pūjyavaro devo bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ .. 36 ..
therefore he will be a most worshipful god, there is no doubt.
6.2.4.74
dṛṣṭvā ye pūjayiṣyaṃti devaṃ ḍamarukeśvaram ..
Those who, having seen him, worship the god Ḍamarukeśvara,

te sarve duḥkhanirmuktā bhaviṣyaṃti gatajvarāḥ .. 37 ..
will all be freed from suffering, their afflictions gone.
6.2.4.76
cāṃdrāyaṇānāṃ vidhivacchatānāmatha yatphalam ..
Whatever fruit comes from hundreds of cāndrāyaṇa fasts performed according to rule,
6.2.4.77
tatphalaṃ samavāpnoti ḍamarukeśvarapūjanāt .. 38 ..
that fruit one attains from the worship of Ḍamarukeśvara.
6.2.4.78
asminsthāne sthitaṃ liṃgaṃ bhaktyā ḍamarukeśvaram ..
If with devotion, even by chance, men dedicated to sin
6.2.4.79
prasaṃgādapi paśyaṃti hyapi pāpaparā narāḥ .. 39 ..
behold the liṅga Ḍamarukeśvara standing in this place,
6.2.4.80
te'pyavaśyaṃ tu yāsyaṃti rudralokaṃ sanātanam ..
even they will surely go to the eternal world of Rudra.
6.2.4.81
bhaktāḥ stoṣyaṃti ye liṃgaṃ khyātaṃ ḍamarukeśvaram ..5.2.4.40..
Devotees who praise the renowned liṅga Ḍamarukeśvara
6.2.4.82
mānasaiḥ pātakairmuktā yāsyaṃti paramaṃ padam ..
are freed from mental sins and will go to the supreme abode.
6.2.4.83

The fruit of a thousand horse-sacrifices, a hundred Vājapeya sacrifices,
6.2.4.84
gosahasraphalaṃ cātra dṛṣṭvā prāpsyaṃti mānavāḥ .. 41 ..
and the fruit of a thousand cows—mortals will obtain it here upon beholding [it].
6.2.4.85
yo yāti saṃgare dhīro dṛṣṭvā ḍamarukeśvaram ..
The brave man who enters battle after beholding Ḍamarukeśvara
6.2.4.86
jayedripūnathāṃte sa rudraloke mahīyate .. 42 ..
conquers his foes, and in the end he is glorified in the world of Rudra.
6.2.4.87
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ ..
This power that destroys sin has been told to you, O goddess;
6.2.4.88
stutastu kīrtitaścaiva sarvābhīṣṭaphalaprada .. 43 ..
when praised and celebrated, it grants the fruits of all desires.
6.2.4.89
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ pañcama āvaṃtyakhaṇḍe caturaśītiliṅgamāhātmye ḍamarukeśvarūmāhātmyavarṇanaṃnāma caturtho' dhyāyaḥ .. 4 .. .. cha .. ..
Thus ends the fourth chapter, titled 'Description of the Glory of Ḍamarukeśvara' in the Praise of the Eighty-Four Liṅgas in the Avantī Section of the Skandapurāṇa, the great Purāṇa in eighty-one thousand verses.
