1.1.8.1

Gautama said:

1.1.8.2

"Hear, O Goddess, what happened formerly on Kailāsa, [when] by the One whose bow is Mount Meru

1.1.8.3

I was commanded to make a pilgrimage to sacred fords in order to behold the liṅgas.

1.1.8.4

And in the field of Rudra, at Kedāra, and likewise at Badarikāśrama,

1.1.8.5

in Kāśī, in holy lands, and at the auspicious Śrīparvata,

1.1.8.6

I went then also to holy cities, chief of which was Kāñcī.

1.1.8.7

[Liṅgas] established by seers, gods, groups of attendants, and supreme yogins,

1.1.8.8

as well as self-manifest ones, I beheld.

1.1.8.9

Here and there, O fortunate one, in the presence of Śiva, sacred fords

1.1.8.10

I visited along with my disciples, wandering over this earth.

1.1.8.11

Plunging thus into all the sacred fords, endowed with vows,

1.1.8.12

performing austerities and sacrificial acts, traversing the earth,

1.1.8.13

joined with the remembrance of Śiva, bowing down before the Śivaliṅgas,

1.1.8.14

all holy places on earth, I took refuge in this region.

1.1.8.15

Here, the god, Mahādeva, the consort of Ambikā, the three-eyed one,

1.1.8.16

known as Aruṇādri, the mountain, I beheld as a liṅga.

1.1.8.17

Here, great-souled siddhas and sages of firm vows,

1.1.8.18

eating roots, bulbs, and fruits, attending upon the Crimson Mountain, were seen.

1.1.8.19

I praised the primordial, great liṅga made of Mount Aruṇa,

1.1.8.20

which was formerly worshipped by the primordial Brahmā with divine sight:

1.1.8.21

'This one who is copper-colored, red, as well as brown, highly auspicious—'

1.1.8.22

thus the Vedas constantly praise You, O Lord of Mount Aruṇa.

1.1.8.23

Homage to the copper-colored, the red, Śiva, the Supreme Self,

1.1.8.24

whose essence is all the Vedas, eternal, of immortal form,

1.1.8.25

the Destroyer, moist with compassion, an ocean of nectar to be drunk with the eyes,

1.1.8.26

full of fondness for devotees, the holy one, the destroyer of the [demon] cities!

1.1.8.27

The darśana of You, O Lord of gods, grants the fruit of all virtues.

1.1.8.28

By one who has obtained it on earth, no other tapas needs ever be performed again.

1.1.8.29

By You, this realm of action is held back today.

1.1.8.30

The gods themselves pray for dwellings here under Your shelter.

1.1.8.31

The fruit accumulated through the gathering of time has now been obtained by me.

1.1.8.32

All other tapas performed by me has the fruit of seeing You.

1.1.8.33

Such is Your form, O Lord of gods, of utterly wondrous rise;

1.1.8.34

nowhere on earth have I seen a single liṅga made of a mountain,

1.1.8.35

charming with its three corners well-endowed with the sun, moon, and fire.

1.1.8.36

O Lord of gods whose form is the three deities, Your great form is seen,

1.1.8.37

establishing the three times by means of the essence of the three powers.

1.1.8.38

Your wondrous liṅga has been seen, having the nature of the three Vedas, its body three-cornered.

1.1.8.39

For the sake of protecting the three worlds, assuming an expansive form,

1.1.8.40

You are seen on the region of the earth, renowned as the Crimson Mountain.

1.1.8.41

And for mortals who do not know, by merely beholding it,

1.1.8.42

He bestows all pleasures, being a treasure-house of unprompted compassion.

1.1.8.43

Another liṅga devoid of worship is said to be void,

1.1.8.44

but this one, worshipped by the gods, always bestows all boons.

1.1.8.45

Be pleased, O One full of compassion, O Great Lord of the Crimson Mountain!

1.1.8.46

Protect me, who am terrified of worldly existence and have surrendered, O Lover of devotees!

1.1.8.47

What was to be seen has been seen: this wondrous, great form of Yours.

1.1.8.48

Render me fulfilled, O Ocean of mercy, O Refuge, to me who have taken refuge!"

1.1.8.49

Being thus praised by me, the god, the Lord of Śoṇācala,

1.1.8.50

showed his supreme, celestial form, and said to me, 'Come!

1.1.8.51

I am exceedingly pleased with your hymns of praise and your supreme devotion.

1.1.8.52

May your residence always be right here, in my presence.

1.1.8.53

And continually worship me on earth with eternal offerings of enjoyment.

1.1.8.54

Perform austerity through your tapas, and reveal here the greatness of all [beings].

1.1.8.55

Formerly, when you were dwelling on the peak of Kailāsa, endowed with tapas,

1.1.8.56

I commanded you: "Worship me in the realm of the earth upon Śoṇādri."

1.1.8.57

Worship performed by the seven seers shines forth for me in heaven;

1.1.8.58

likewise, engaged in constant worship, make it manifest upon the surface of the earth.

1.1.8.59

For the welfare of all living beings, you, rich in tapas,

1.1.8.60

devotedly worship me on earth with rites enjoined in the Āgamas.

1.1.8.61

My celestial great worship is indeed seen by the gods in heaven;

1.1.8.62

earthly worship is to be made manifest by you upon the surface of the earth.

1.1.8.63

The māhātmya has already been declared, how I am Aruṇācala;

1.1.8.64

standing upon this region of the earth, I am exceedingly pleased with you.

1.1.8.65

Whosoever were superior in meritorious deeds worshipped me before;

1.1.8.66

superior even to them on earth, make manifest the worship of Śiva.'

1.1.8.67

Being thus instructed, filled with devotion to Śiva, bowing down to the Lord of gods,

1.1.8.68

I questioned the Lord of Aruṇādri, full of compassion, as I bowed:

1.1.8.69

'This form consisting of fire, the Great Lord, cannot be approached;

1.1.8.70

how can I now worship him with rites fit for the mortal world?

1.1.8.71

Or how can I carry out this command meaningfully?

1.1.8.72

O glorious one, teach me the means whereby you may be approachable.'

1.1.8.73

When thus petitioned, the glorious god, the Lord of Śoṇācala,

1.1.8.74

the Self of all, a treasury of compassion, showed grace to me as I bowed:

1.1.8.75

'I will manifest subtle liṅgas upon the surface of the earth;

1.1.8.76

perform my worship through the various rituals prescribed in the Āgamas.

1.1.8.77

With the powers of your tapas, worship my wondrous, subtle liṅga,

1.1.8.78

surrounded by five enclosures and named the Lord of Aruṇādri.'

1.1.8.79

Having thus instructed, the Great God Śiva, the self-manifest, pure, and vast,

1.1.8.80

revealed his form to me in the shape of a subtle liṅga.

1.1.8.81

Beholding that pure, subtle liṅga, arisen by itself,

1.1.8.82

endowed with all enclosures, I became content in heart.

1.1.8.83

Again I petitioned the god Śambhu, affectionate to those who take refuge in him:

1.1.8.84

'The modes prescribed in the Āgamas have become unperceivable.

1.1.8.85

How indeed, O Embodiment of Compassion, may I understand the distinct names

1.1.8.86

assigned to your forms, O Īśvara, self-manifest, my Lord?

1.1.8.87

Who should be your worshippers, and what kind of temple should there be here?

1.1.8.88

What is the hymn of praise, what is the worship, and who are the attendants here?

1.1.8.89

How should the site be protected, and who are the guardians of oneself?

1.1.8.90

And how will your daily worship by mortals increase?

1.1.8.91

Many gods have arrived; how can this be trusted by mortal men?

1.1.8.92

Be gracious, O Supreme Lord! Command everything yourself.'

1.1.8.93

Being thus petitioned, the god himself, the Sovereign Lord of Śoṇādri,

1.1.8.94

the god then gave command to Viśvakarman, who had arrived:

1.1.8.95

'Create a celestial city named Aruṇa, supreme in virtues,

1.1.8.96

and my celestial temple, radiant with hosts of great gems;

1.1.8.97

fashion all that for me, along with the triple symphony and the limbs of worship.'

1.1.8.98

The glorious Śiva, the embodiment of compassion, the Lord of Aruṇādri, Śiva,

1.1.8.99

explained the order of worship according to the various names, and the vow:

1.1.8.100

'Listen to that from me, and about those who are created as attendants for worship;

1.1.8.101

listen, O Gautama, to the entire human order of my worship,

1.1.8.102

which spreads across the earth for the welfare of all the worlds.

1.1.8.103

This immense, matchless liṅga made of fiery splendour is seen;

1.1.8.104

named the Lord of Aruṇādri, let it be constantly worshipped by you.

1.1.8.105

On my northern side, my Śakti, ever emergent, is to be worshipped with joy;

1.1.8.106

bearing the māhātmya of the site, she is named Apītakucā.

1.1.8.107

This king of Aruṇācala, undivided, united with his beloved,

1.1.8.108

the Great God for festivals, is to be worshipped surrounded by [his] sons and enjoyments.'

1.1.8.109

Granting wisdom to his devotees, with his hand extended in the boon of fearlessness, Śiva,

1.1.8.110

holding an antelope and an axe, with an ever-gracious countenance,

1.1.8.111

Śambhu as Umāskandeśvara, adorned with celestial jewels,

1.1.8.112

illuminating the worlds with his splendor, endowed with unhindered glory [is to be worshipped].

1.1.8.113

And on the auspicious festival day of Śakti, Sundareśvarī is to be worshipped,

1.1.8.114

adorned with all ornaments, heightening the aesthetic savor of love.

1.1.8.115

In front, child Gaṇapati should be worshipped, the delight of prosperity,

1.1.8.116

adorning my vicinity, with many abundant edibles and foods.

1.1.8.117

Never leaving my side, her eyes graced with red lines,

1.1.8.118

the supreme Śakti, present right at my side, must be worshipped for the festival.

1.1.8.119

Resounding with tinkling anklets, glorious, dancing, skilled in the tāṇḍava dance,

1.1.8.120

Amṛteśvara is to be worshipped before the eyes for the sake of the festival.

1.1.8.121

And another most fortunate Śakti is to be worshipped, along with the Vināyakas of the earth.

1.1.8.122

At the door, Nandī and Mahākāla, radiant like the sun in front;

1.1.8.123

and the worship of all my devotees should also be arranged.

1.1.8.124

In the south, the Mothers are to be worshipped together with Vighneśa and Śāstṛ.

1.1.8.125

In the southwest corner, the destroyer of obstacles, Vināyaka, is to be worshipped.

1.1.8.126

And Skanda, the bearer of the lance, should be worshipped in the northeast corner.

1.1.8.127

And thereafter pleasing liṅgas are to be worshipped.

1.1.8.128

Having worshipped my temple, with Dakṣiṇāmūrti facing south,

1.1.8.129

marked with the form of Viṣṇu on the west, and endowed with the form of Agni,

1.1.8.130

marked with the form of Brahmā on the north, and endowed with an antelope on the east,

1.1.8.131

endowed with all the qualities of the gods, accompanied by all energies,

1.1.8.132

the great temple of Apītakucanāthā, endowed with all energies,

1.1.8.133

surrounded by the wives of the guardians of the directions, having worshipped it,

1.1.8.134

the goddesses and sovereign masters of glory, for the protection of the temple [should be worshipped].

1.1.8.135

Having worshipped the guardian of the field, along with all his enclosures,

1.1.8.136

Aruṇagirīśvarī, who has come to protect her son, is to be worshipped,

1.1.8.137

along with Kālī and various other deities who protect the rites.

1.1.8.138

Various festivals of great fortune should be arranged every month.

1.1.8.139

Create celestial maidens devoted to the worship of Lord Śiva,

1.1.8.140

skilled in the arts of dance and song, endowed with beauty and good fortune,

1.1.8.141

possessed of graceful charm, granting desires, ever pure.

1.1.8.142

Instruct disciples who know the Vedas and are radiant with righteous conduct,

1.1.8.143

auspicious, pure of mind, for the performance of celestial services,

1.1.8.144

initiated, stainless, purified, skilled in the Śaiva Āgamas;

1.1.8.145

for the establishment of Śaiva conduct, instruct them in my worship.

1.1.8.146

Mṛdaṅga players, conch-blowers, lute-players, cymbalists, flute-players,

1.1.8.147

coppersmiths, produce men of true learning, proficient in the four sciences,

1.1.8.148

various kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, and śūdras devoted to Śiva.

1.1.8.149

And four monasteries should be prepared in the four directions for those residing at the tīrtha,

1.1.8.150

as residences for sages, devotees of Śiva, free from worldly desires.

1.1.8.151

Dwelling in them, let the lords of sages protect the worship of Śiva.

1.1.8.152

Furthermore, let mendicant Śaivas, devotees, and Pāśupatas as well,

1.1.8.153

and others, including disciplined Kāpālikas, always protect [it].

1.1.8.154

For all beings born now, those who have been born, and those who will be born,

1.1.8.155

this site must be protected by kings with unhindered authority.

1.1.8.156

And a great bakula tree is seen here, a celestial tree;

1.1.8.157

here let devotees determine decisions regarding the work of Śiva.

1.1.8.158

Whatever wealth is given to me here to attain unlooked-for supreme results,

1.1.8.159

yielding imperishable fruit, is to be protected by the servants of Śiva.

1.1.8.160

And I shall hear the matters petitioned by the devotees standing before me;

1.1.8.161

I shall fulfill everything according to their hearts' desire.

1.1.8.162

I shall forgive thousands of transgressions of those who worship me well.

1.1.8.163

Because this worship ordained by the Āgamas has been fashioned by humans,

1.1.8.164

I will accept all of that worship proclaimed in all the Āgamas.

1.1.8.165

Any action undertaken by my servants will bring me delight.

1.1.8.166

Considering all the meanings of the Āgamas appropriate to the occasion,

1.1.8.167

having arranged the diverse modes of worship for the protection of the world, O sage,

1.1.8.168

a great worship must be reverently performed on the full moon day.

1.1.8.169

Various charitable feeding-halls should be established here by the thousands,

1.1.8.170

and diverse gifts made according to one’s capacity in his presence. / 85

1.1.8.171

Givers of an unbroken [flame of a] lamp in my presence

1.1.8.172

attain this luminous form of mine without doubt. / 86

1.1.8.173

Those who offer me with devotion flowers born in water, on trees,

1.1.8.174

in shrubbery, and grown on creepers, shall become kings. / 87

1.1.8.175

Going before them in person, I shall conquer their enemies.

1.1.8.176

Whichever king of whatever region is abundant in austerity, / 88

1.1.8.177

and offers to me here the delightful produce enriched by each [land]—

1.1.8.178

approaching my presence, even wicked kings

1.1.8.179

shall become devotees of Śiva, fully fulfilled, without doubt." / 8.90

1.1.8.180

Having heard this speech uttered from the mouth of Śambhu, my impurities washed away,

1.1.8.181

I bowed down and addressed Śiva, the Lord of the Crimson Mountain (Śoṇagiri), out of curiosity: / 91

1.1.8.182

Thus ends the eighth chapter, entitled "Description of the Greatness of the Worship of the Lord of Aruṇa (Aruṇeśvara)," in the first half of the Aruṇācalamāhātmya, in the first Māheśvarakhaṇḍa of the glorious Skandamahāpurāṇa comprising eighty-one thousand verses. / 8
