14.26.1

Pulastya said:
Then one should go, O best of kings, to the sacred ford renowned in the three worlds / on that sin-destroying mountain, named Kanakhala. // 1

14.26.2

Hear, O ruler of the earth, the wonder that occurred there in the past: / A king named Sumati arrived at Mount Arbuda. // 2

14.26.3

During a solar eclipse, O protector of the earth, he went to the Kanakhala sacred ford. / By him, genuine gold was brought for the sake of brahmins. // 3

14.26.4

An abundance of it fell into the water through the carelessness of that king. / It was not found by that ruler of the earth, though he was intent upon searching. // 4

14.26.5

Then, having bathed, he returned home, filled with remorse. / Then, after a long time, he came there once again, // 5

14.26.6

for the sake of bathing during a solar eclipse, and he saw that place. / The wise king reflected: “In this place, back then, // 6

14.26.7

gold fell from my hand and was not found in any way.” // 7

14.26.8

Pulastya said:
While he was thinking thus, a bodiless voice spoke: / “There is no loss here, O lord of kings, in this world or in the next! // 8

14.26.9

Here, that former gold has become multiplied ten-millionfold. / Great remorse was felt by you over the loss of wealth; // 9

14.26.10

therefore, it has attained this measure, even unimaginable. / Those endowed with faith who, with gold, O best of kings, / carefully perform a śrāddha here, and especially [give] gold, // 10

14.26.11

shall give to brahmins—its measure cannot be known. / Search in this place: you will obtain it, there is no doubt about this.” // 11

14.26.12

Hearing that voice arisen from the sky there, O king, / searching in that place, he found that gold— // 12

14.26.13

bright, multiplied ten-millionfold, abundant; then he attained satisfaction. / Having realized the power of that sacred ford, filled with compassion, he gave it by the thousands / to brahmins, dedicating it to the ancestors and the deities. // 13

14.26.14

Then, by the power of that gift, that ruler of the earth / became a Yakṣa named Dhanada, a giver of various kinds of wealth. // 14

14.26.15

Whoever performs a śrāddha there during a solar eclipse, O ruler of the earth, / his ancestors, well-gratified, attain satisfaction until the end of an eon. // 15

14.26.16

By ritual ablution, the seers, gods, and great serpents attain satisfaction; / instantaneous destruction of sin occurs, O lord of the earth. // 16

14.26.17

Therefore, with all effort, one should perform ritual ablution there, / as well as gifts according to one's capacity, and śrāddha, O best of kings. // 17

14.26.26

Thus ends the twenty-sixth chapter, titled ‘Description of the Māhātmya of Kanakhala Sacred Ford’, in the Arbuda Section, the third part of the seventh Prabhāsa Section, in the Skandapurāṇa comprising eighty-one thousand verses. // 26
