14.47.1

Pulastya said: / 'Then, O best of kings, one should go to the very complete hermitage of Gautama,
where austerity was formerly performed by the great-souled Gautama.

14.47.2

Formerly there was a sage named Gautama, supremely righteous;
with devotion he worshipped the god of gods, Maheśvara.

14.47.3

As he worshipped with devotion, cleaving through the surface of the earth,
a great liṅga arose, supreme and dedicated to Maheśvara, O king.

14.47.4

At that very time, a bodiless voice spoke:
"Worship this great liṅga, which has appeared because of your devotion. / Choose a boon—may good betide you—whatever is in your heart."

14.47.5

Gautama said: / "O god, O Śambhu, O Lord of the universe, if you are pleased with me, O Lord,
you must always maintain your presence here in this hermitage.

14.47.6

May whoever sees you with true devotion go to Brahmaloka."

14.47.7

The voice from the sky said: / "Whoever beholds me here on the fourteenth day
of the dark fortnight in the month of Māgha, O best of brahmins, shall attain the supreme goal."'

14.47.8

Having spoken thus, the voice then fell silent, O lord of the earth. / There is another pure pool there, filled with water; / a man who bathes there instantly saves his entire family.

14.47.9

Whoever performs a śrāddha there, especially on the new moon, / certainly obtains the entire fruit of a Gayā-śrāddha.

14.47.10

The best among sages praise the gifting of sesame seeds there; / from the gift of sesame seeds, O king, one may dwell in heaven for as many years as there are seeds.

14.47.11

On Arbuda, the Gautamī pilgrimage when Jupiter is in Leo, / on a new moon falling on a Monday, yields twelve times the fruit of the Godāvarī.

14.47.12

Immersion in the Bhāgīrathī for sixty thousand years / [equals] a single ritual ablution in the Godāvarī when Jupiter is in Leo.

14.47.47

Thus ends the forty-seventh chapter, named 'Description of the Glory of the Sacred Ford of Gautama’s Hermitage', in the third [section], the Arbudakhaṇḍa, of the seventh [part], the Prabhāsakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, the Mahāpurāṇa in eighty-one thousand verses.
