14.59.1

Pulastya said: / Then one should go to the Mahaujas sacred ford, which destroys sins, / bathing where a man is certainly endowed with splendor, O king. / Formerly, Śakra was brought to extreme distress by the fire of slaying a brahmin. // 1

14.59.2

Devoid of luster, bereft of splendor, accompanied by a foul odor, / abandoned by all the gods, he fell into supreme dejection. // 2

14.59.3

Then the lord of the gods asked the foremost twice-born, Bṛhaspati: / ‘O venerable one, how might an increase in my splendor come about as before?’ // 3

14.59.4

Bṛhaspati said: / ‘Best of gods, undertake a pilgrimage to sacred fords on the surface of the earth; / without a sacred ford, there will surely be no increase of your splendor.’ // 4

14.59.5

Then, having wandered to many sacred fords, O king of men, / Śakra in due course reached Arbuda, and seeing a pool of water there, / the exhausted [god] took a bath; thereupon he regained great splendor. // 5

14.59.6

Completely freed from the foul odor and surrounded by the gods, / he smilingly spoke these words: ‘Listen, all deities! // 6

14.59.7

Those who will bathe here whenever Śakra’s festival arrives, / at the end of the bright fortnight of Āśvina, shall attain the highest goal, / and they shall always be endowed with good fortune birth after birth.’ // 7
