16.232.1
Īśvara said: / Then, O great goddess, one should go to the well worshiped by the three worlds / to the west of that sacred ford, [pertaining] to the high-souled Pāṇḍavas.
16.232.2
When the Pāṇḍavas reached the forest on the surface of the earth, / wandering, O great goddess, they arrived at the sacred field of Prabhāsa.
16.232.3
Then, having gone to that most sacred field, they resided there concentrated in mind for some time; then Kṛṣṇā spoke these words:
16.232.4
"Thousands of brahmins dine in your household, / but the reservoir of water is far away, nor are there so many servants.
16.232.5
Therefore, a reservoir of water should be made near the hermitage, / wherein I shall bathe by your gracious favour."
16.232.6
Then all the Pāṇḍavas together, O fair-faced lady, / urged by the words of Draupadī, dug a well there.
16.232.7
Then, having heard that the sons of Pṛthā had arrived, the blessed son of Devakī / came to that very place from Dvāravatī accompanied by his kinsmen:
16.232.8
with Pradyumna, Sāmba, Gada, and Niṣadha, / with Yuyudhāna, Rāma, and the wise Cārudeṣṇa,
16.232.9
surrounded by other heroic Yādavas fierce in battle. / Those chiefs of the Yadus, having assembled according to proper custom,
16.232.10
then, at the conclusion of their conversation, on some subsequent occasion, / Vāsudeva spoke these words to the son of Pāṇḍu:
16.232.11
"O mighty-armed Yudhiṣṭhira, what desire of yours shall I fulfill? / Sovereignty, grain, wealth, or the destruction of your enemies?"
16.232.12
Yudhiṣṭhira said: / "O best of the Yādavas, you are capable of all deeds, without doubt. / Formerly, after twelve years, a favour was promised by you.
16.232.13
There is nothing on the earth, in the three worlds, that is not accomplished / when you are pleased, O Lord of the Universe, revered by all the gods.
16.232.14
If you are indeed pleased with me, O Lord of the entire world, / manifest your eternal presence here in this well, O Janārdana.
16.232.15
Whatever person comes here and performs a ritual ablution with devotion, / let him go to the realm of Viṣṇu by your grace, O Keśava."
16.232.16
Īśvara said: / Having said, "So it shall be," and taking leave of Yudhiṣṭhira, / Kṛṣṇa, revered by all the worlds, departed for Dvārakā.
16.232.17
A man performing a śrāddha there obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice / by the grace of Viṣṇu, the god of gods, of boundless splendour.
16.232.18
He obtains half of that merely by libation, and a quarter [of that fruit] from a ritual ablution; / therefore, one should perform a śrāddha there with every effort.
16.232.19
He who performs a ritual ablution and śrāddha on the full moon of Jyeṣṭha / and worships Sāvitrī, shall go to the supreme state.
16.232.20
A gift of a cow should be given there by those desiring the full fruit of the pilgrimage.
16.232.232
Thus ends the two hundred and thirty-second chapter, entitled 'Description of the Glory of the Pāṇḍava Well,' in the first [sub-section], 'The Glory of Prabhāsakṣetra,' of the seventh section, the Prabhāsakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, the compendium of eighty-one thousand [verses].
