16.283.1
Īśvara said: / Seeing that Mada with a terrible mouth approaching, about to devour him, / with his jaws open like the God of Death,
16.283.2
frightened by his paralysed state, while [the monster] licked his lips again and again, / afflicted by fear, [Indra] bowed down and addressed Cyavana, O great goddess:
16.283.3
'From this day forward, these two Aśvins shall be worthy of soma, O Bhārgava; / it will all be so—I speak the truth to you!
16.283.4
Let your undertaking not prove in vain, O rich in austerity; / and I know, O brahmin seer, that you will not act in vain.
16.283.5
These two Aśvins are worthy of soma, just as they have been made by you today; / but [it was done] so that your prowess might shine forth even more, O Bhārgava,
16.283.6
and so that the father of Sukanyā might gain fame in the world; / therefore this revelation of your prowess was brought about by me. / Therefore show favour to me; let this happen just as you desire.'
16.283.7
When the great-souled Cyavana was thus addressed by Śakra, / his anger subsided quickly, and so too did the pride of the ruler of the gods.
16.283.8
And the powerful one divided Mada, O goddess, which he had created before, / again and again into liquor, women, dice, and hunting; / having thus distributed Mada and having satisfied Śakra with soma,
16.283.9
and having officiated at the sacrifice for that king along with all [the gods] including the two Aśvins, / making his prowess renowned across all worlds, O fair-complexioned one,
16.283.10
he roamed about with Sukanyā in the great forest in this sacred field. / Connected with him, O goddess, is this [shrine] bearing the name Cyavaneśvara,
16.283.11
a liṅga removing great sins, installed by Cyavana. / Whoever worships it according to rule obtains the fruit of an horse sacrifice.
16.283.12
Therefore seers wait upon Candramas' sacred ford, / namely the seers called Vaikhānasa and likewise the Vālakhilyas.
16.283.13
If a man performs a śrāddha here according to rule, especially on the full-moon day in the month of Āśvina, / and feeds brahmins individually, / his fruit will be equal to ten million sacred fords; there is no doubt about this.
16.283.14
Whoever listens to this sin-destroying story, O goddess, / shall become freed from the sins born of all his lifetimes.
16.283.283
