16.8.1

The goddess said: / Speak again, O Lord of gods, O bringer of peace to the world, the māhātmya / of the glorious lord Someśvara, which destroys all sins; / and tell also of the triad here that has Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Īśa as presiding deities.

16.8.2

The lord said: / Listen with a single mind to my ancient secret, / and what great, supreme wonder occurred in that liṅga.

16.8.3

Sixty thousand tens of millions of seers of upward-drawn seed / entered into that liṅga, like an oblation of clarified butter into fire.

16.8.4

Siddhi (Perfection), Vṛddhi (Increase), Tuṣṭi (Contentment), Ṛddhi (Prosperity), and fifthly Puṣṭi (Nourishment), / Kīrti (Renown), Śānti (Peace), and Lakṣmī arose from that liṅga.

16.8.5

The origin of seventy million mantras and of perfections [took place there], / as well as other divine yogic elixirs and divine herbal panaceas.

16.8.6

The Gāruḍa lore and the Bhūtatantra, the sky-farers and the intermediate spirits— / all of them, along with yoga, arose from that liṅga.

16.8.7

And whatever other perfections are proclaimed as the eightfold perfections, / all of them arose from that place along with the liṅga.

16.8.9

I shall tell another matter, O goddess: those who attained perfection here, / originating from my own portions, reached dissolution in this liṅga.

16.8.9_1

And I shall tell of all their achievements in due order: / Purākrama, Graha, Muṇḍa, Guḍaka, along with Sahetuka,

16.8.10

Vimala, and Daṇḍika—these seven are remembered as Kutsikas. / They became perfected in this liṅga long ago through my Pāśupata yoga.

16.8.11

Rudra, Vipra, as well as Dāna, Candra, Mantha, Avalokaka, / and Sūryāvaloka: these are proclaimed as the seven Gārgyas.

16.8.12

They attained perfection in Someśvara at Prabhāsa, O fair-complexioned lady. / Mūka, Manya, Śiva, Prakāśa, and Kapila,

16.8.13

Satkula, and Karṇikāra are proclaimed as the Pauruṣeyas. / They attained perfection long ago at Someśvara in Prabhāsa, which destroys sins.

16.8.14

Age after age they attained perfection in that liṅga long ago, O my beloved. / These and other brahmins who will exist in the Kali yuga

16.8.19

will attain perfection there that is difficult to obtain even for the thirty gods. / All this has been declared to you; that liṅga is the supreme bestower of perfection,

16.8.19_2

difficult to be attained by all mortals, yet situated in Prabhāsa; / and nobody enveloped by impure deeds comprehends it.

16.8.19_3

Whatever afflictions caused by planets and others caused by evil spirits there are, / ḍākinīs, ghosts, vetālas, rākṣasas, seizing pūtanās,

16.8.19_4

piśācas, yātudhānas, mothers who snatch newborns, / afflicting spirits of children, and whatever other known seizing spirits,

16.8.19_5

other spirits of fever, dysentery, fistula in ano, / urinary gravel, strangury, and thousands of other diseases,

16.8.20

piles, other forms of leprosy, / consumption, flatulent tumours in the abdomen, / and whatever other diseases are proclaimed—

16.8.21

upon approaching Someśvara, through the darśana of that liṅga, / all of them perish completely, like fuel cast into fire.

16.8.22

Afflictions and other […] snakes, adders, and scorpions— / all of them are destroyed there by the darśana of glorious Someśvara.

16.8.23

He who is known by the name Someśvara is remembered as the western Bhairava, / heard of through synonymous names such as Kālāgnirudranātha.

16.8.24

I abide in it, O ruler of the gods, bestowing grace on devotees; / and I consume all the misdeeds of men, without a doubt.

16.8.25

He who is the vital breath residing in the body, moving within the body of embodied beings, / inside whom is this cosmic egg, and who is one though many—

16.8.26

that god whom all the Vedas and great seers praise, / through whose doorway the nature of the supreme Brahman is attained,

16.8.27

that very Mahādeva, O goddess, is situated in Prabhāsa. / Just as a man does not find a jewel hidden in a house,

16.8.28

so it stands in Prabhāsa like a jewel in my house. / And that liṅga in a former kalpa pierced through the seven netherworlds,

16.8.29

and is declared to be equal to ten million suns and the fire of cosmic dissolution; / therefore Someśvara was proclaimed of old as Kālāgnirudra.

16.8.30

Thus, O goddess Pārvatī, the māhātmya of Someśvara, / which destroys all sins, has been told to you in brief.

16.8.30_6

Thus ends the eighth chapter, titled “Description of the Sovereign Power of Śrī Someśvara,” in the first part, the Prabhāsamāhātmya, of the seventh section, the Prabhāsakhaṇḍa, in the Skanda Mahāpurāṇa comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
