16.97.1

Īśvara said: / Then one should go, O great goddess, to what is renowned as Yogeśvara, / situated seven dhanuses to the north-west of Kāmeśa. 1

16.97.2

A liṅga indeed of great power, destroying sin by its mere darśana; / in the former yuga it was accounted and renowned as Gaṇeśvara. 2

16.97.3

Anciently, O goddess, my countless attendants of great strength, / recognizing Prabhāsa to be a sacred field of Maheśvara, came there. 3

16.97.4

Staying there, taking resort to yoga, they performed terrible austerity / for a thousand divine years; thereupon Maheśvara was pleased, 4

16.97.4_1

and by the power of their yoga he granted them liberation consisting of dwelling in the same world [with him]. 3 [5a]

16.97.5

Because the bull-bannered god was pleased with them through the six-limbed yoga, / therefore the liṅga is named Yogeśvara, granting the fruit of yoga. 5 [5b-c]

16.97.6

He who worships it with devotion according to the proper ritual rules / attains the perfection of yoga and rejoices in heaven like a god. 6

16.97.7

He who would give a golden Meru and the entire earth— / yet he who worships Yogeśa is remembered as superior to both. 7

16.97.8

A bull should be given there for the sake of the complete fruit. / Thus eleven Rudras dwelling in Prabhāsa have been proclaimed; / they must be constantly worshipped and revered by those desiring the fruit of the sacred field. 8

16.97.9

And whoever hears this collection of the eleven Rudras / gains the entire fruit of the sacred field of one who dwells within Prabhāsa. 9

16.97.10

And he who does not know these Rudras dwelling in Prabhāsa, / even though he resides in the middle of the sacred field, is considered non-existent, a beast. 10

16.97.11

Having worshipped all these Rudras, or even just one, / [or] Someśvara, if one recites the Śatarudrīya, / he obtains the merit of all the Rudras; of this there is no doubt. 11

16.97.12

This secret māhātmya of the Rudras has been declared to you, O passionate lady; / heard, it dispels sin and increases merit. 12

16.97.97

Thus ends the ninety-seventh chapter, named “The Description of the Māhātmya of Yogeśvara,” in the first [part], the Māhātmya of the Prabhāsakṣetra, in the seventh [book], the Prabhāsakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand [verses]. 97
