2.1.2.1

Now, the ritual rules for the worship with the mantra of the glorious Varāha:

2.1.2.2

The glorious Sūta said:

2.1.2.3

"Listen, all you sages, to the holy ancient story,

2.1.2.4

in the Vaivasvata interval formerly, in the most holy Kṛta age.

2.1.2.5

To the lord of gods, the protector of the earth, dwelling on Nārāyaṇādri,

2.1.2.6

the god who has taken the form of a boar, Earth, surrounded by her companions,

2.1.2.7

having bowed down, questioned him whose wide eyes are like red lotuses.

2.1.2.8

Earth said:

2.1.2.9

'Worshipped with which mantra will you be pleased?

2.1.2.10

Tell me that, O lord of gods, which is ever dear to you,

2.1.2.11

which brings all prosperity to those who recite it, bestows sons and grandsons,

2.1.2.12

grants sovereignty over the whole earth, and always fulfills the desires of the longing,

2.1.2.13

and at the end gives the attainment of your abode to those of controlled self.

2.1.2.14

Tell me such [a mantra] out of love for me, O Varāha, bestower of honor!'

2.1.2.15

The glorious Sūta said:

2.1.2.16

"Thus asked by Earth, he whose face had a pleased smile spoke:

2.1.2.17

The glorious Varāha said:

2.1.2.18

'Listen, O goddess, to the supreme secret, which instantly brings prosperity,

2.1.2.19

which grants land, grants sons, is to be kept secret, and never to be disclosed [indiscriminately].

2.1.2.20

Yet it should be spoken to one who desires to hear, who is devoted and self-controlled:

2.1.2.21

"Om, salutations to the glorious Varāha and the lifter of the Earth,"

2.1.2.22

joined with the wife of Fire (svāhā), should ever be recited by those seeking liberation.

2.1.2.23

This mantra, O goddess Earth, grants all perfections.

2.1.2.24

Its seer is declared to be Saṃkarṣaṇa, and I myself am the deity;

2.1.2.25

the meter is proclaimed to be paṅkti, and 'Śrī' is stated to be the seed-syllable.

2.1.2.26

Having received that mantra from a true guru, one should chant the mantra four hundred thousand times,

2.1.2.27

and make offerings of milk-rice mixed with honey and clarified butter.

2.1.2.28

Now I shall describe the visualization that brings purity of mind:

2.1.2.29

Splendid like a mountain of pure crystal, with eyes like red lotus petals,

2.1.2.30

having the face of a boar, gentle, four-armed, wearing a diadem,

2.1.2.31

with the śrīvatsa on his chest, holding a discus, conch, and lotus, with a hand granting fearlessness,

2.1.2.32

accompanied by you, O ocean-clad one, seated on my left thigh,

2.1.2.33

wearing red and yellow garments, adorned with red ornaments,

2.1.2.34

seated upon a lotus upon the form of Śeṣa stationed in the middle of the back of the divine Turtle.

2.1.2.35

Having thus meditated, one should constantly chant the mantra one hundred and eight times;

2.1.2.36

he attains all desires, and at the end surely goes to liberation.

2.1.2.37

O Earth, O pure one, what you asked me has been declared by me.

2.1.2.38

Therefore, what is your intention? Speak it, O fair-faced one.

2.1.2.39

Now begins the description of the attainment of the desired objects of Dharma and others through the mantra of Śrī Varāha.

2.1.2.40

Śrī Sūta said:

2.1.2.41

Having heard this, the Earth then questioned him once again:

2.1.2.42

"By whom was this performed in ancient times, O Lord, and what fruit was obtained?"

2.1.2.43

Thus asked, the divine Śrī Varāha spoke this again:

2.1.2.44

"Long ago, in the Kṛta age, O goddess, there was a great Manu named Dharma.

2.1.2.45

Having received this mantra from Brahmā and chanting it on this mountain,

2.1.2.46

and seeing me and receiving a boon, he attained my own abode.

2.1.2.47

Long ago, Indra, fallen from heaven on account of Durvāsas's curse,

2.1.2.48

having worshipped me here with this [mantra], O goddess, reached heaven again.

2.1.2.49

Other sages too, O Earth, having chanted it, attained the highest state.

2.1.2.50

Indeed, Ananta, the lord of serpents, having received this from Kaśyapa,

2.1.2.51

chanted it in Śvetadvīpa and became the bearer of the earth.

2.1.2.52

Therefore, it should always be chanted here by men desirous of the earth."

2.1.2.53

Śrī Sūta said:

2.1.2.54

Having heard this, well pleased, she spoke once more to the Bearer of the Earth:

2.1.2.55

Dhāraṇī said:

2.1.2.56

"On the great mountain named Veṅkaṭa, when will Śrīnivāsa, the lord of the world,

2.1.2.57

the flawless lord of gods, come together with Śrī and Bhūmi?

2.1.2.58

How will Janārdana remain there until the end of the kalpa?

2.1.2.59

Tell this, O essence of the Boar! Great is my curiosity."

2.1.2.60

Thus ends the second chapter, named 'Description of the Rule for Worshipping with the Śrī Varāha Mantra and Others' in the dialogue between Dharaṇī and Varāha, in the Śrīveṅkaṭācalamāhātmya of the second, Vaiṣṇava section of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
