2.2.41.1

Jaimini said:

2.2.41.2

I shall explain the Puṣyasnāna festival as declared of old by Brahmā.

2.2.41.3

When the full moon day is conjoined with the constellation Puṣya,

2.2.41.4

in the month of Pauṣa, one should thus perform the Puṣyasnāna festival of Hari.

2.2.41.5

On the eleventh day, one should perform the sowing of sprouts in the northeast.

2.2.41.6

Then, every day in Hari’s shrine, one should perform [rites] before the image,

2.2.41.7

and offer oblations every night with dancing, singing, and offerings.

2.2.41.8

On the night of the fourteenth day, however, the consecration of the water-pots [is performed],

2.2.41.9

eighty-one in number, auspicious and made of gold;

2.2.41.10

and he should set up twenty-one filled with cow’s ghee.

2.2.41.11

One should have a sarvatobhadra maṇḍala made before Hari.

2.2.41.12

In its center, on a large base, one should place an auspicious mirror.

2.2.41.13

At night, one should keep vigil with an abundance of songs, dances, and other festivities.

2.2.41.14

At dawn, O brahmins, one should perform the fire ritual dedicated to those deities,

2.2.41.15

with firewood sticks of palāśa, offering cooked oblation (caru) and clarified butter,

2.2.41.16

a thousand oblations for each of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva,

2.2.41.17

offering into the fire with their characteristic mantras; and at the end of that, one should offer to Puruṣottama.

2.2.41.18

One should worship the reflected [image] in the mirror with those offerings of service.

2.2.41.19

Then, with the Puruṣasūkta, one should consecrate those jars with mantras.

2.2.41.20

With that unbroken stream alone, one should bathe Puruṣottama,

2.2.41.21

and then the deities with the Pāvamānī verses, followed by the Śrīsūkta.

2.2.41.22

One should bathe [him] with the jars of clarified butter, and after that with the Gāyatrī.

2.2.41.23

With scented water [consecrated by] the hymn of Viṣṇu, and with the Śrīsūkta, one should worship [him].

2.2.41.24

With a shower of a thousand streams [one should bathe] the God; then one should remove the previous offerings.

2.2.41.25

One should smear the limbs of the God and his form with fragrant substances and sandalwood paste.

2.2.41.26

One should apply the ornaments in their proper places and for proper splendor;

2.2.41.27

immediately after, one should adorn [him] with fragrant flower garlands.

2.2.41.28

One should place the God's eight weapons, beginning with the discus, in front [of him].

2.2.41.29

Holding up a jeweled umbrella, one should worship Puruṣottama,

2.2.41.30

accompanied by Lakṣmī, again, O brahmins, splendidly with presentations,

2.2.41.31

while conches are blown, resounding smoothly and deeply,

2.2.41.32

while beautiful courtesans are occupied in waving chowries,

2.2.41.33

with auspicious songs, dances, and recitations of praises by bards,

2.2.41.34

and while the twice-born repeatedly shout cries of victory.

2.2.41.35

Having worshipped Keśava with three handfuls of dūrvā grass and unbroken grains,

2.2.41.36

with extremely pure golden vessels holding lamps of cow's clarified butter

2.2.41.37

and wicks infused with camphor, one should wave lights before Jagannātha.

2.2.41.38

Pleasing betel, well prepared and set in a golden vessel,

2.2.41.39

one should slowly present to each near the mouth.

2.2.41.40

One should give sacrificial fees to the preceptor and worship the brahmins.

2.2.41.41

Those who, filled with joy, witness the sacred festival of the Puṣya ablution,

2.2.41.42

having all their desires fulfilled, go to the abode of Viṣṇu.

2.2.41.43

One fallen from kingship regains his kingdom and obtains universal sovereignty;

2.2.41.44

a sonless woman or one whose children have died obtains a long-lived son.

2.2.41.45

Destroying poverty, conferring fortune, and causing brahminic splendor,

2.2.41.46

the Puṣya ablution has been proclaimed to you. Hear now about the Uttarāyaṇa.

2.2.41.47

Thus ends the forty-first chapter, named 'Description of the Rule for the Puṣya Consecration,' in the Puruṣottamakṣetra-māhātmya, in the second, Vaiṣṇava section of the venerable Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
